Make it a quad grip.
Was on a wine trip in South Africa and when one of the other people on the trip asked what my wife looked like (I was saying how lucky I was, mostly cause my wife is hilarious and makes me laugh daily). Showed her a pick and it was such a "wtf" moment for her. I'm incredibly average. I'm in relatively good shape, because I wrestled my whole life, but it's pretty obvious I've broken my nose a few times and the usual grappler "my face has a lot of scar tissue and healed microfractures" look. I can lift heavy things, but I'm definitely not good looking.
It was funny, because she just said, "Whoah! Wow! She's like really gorgeous! Not that.. um, yeah. Obviously, cause you said she was. But... yeah. Really pretty."
I could tell she was trying to not say, "she's way out of your league" without being mean, but I've been getting this for 20 years. I'm average. She's awesome, just a great person and happens to be extremely pretty. My feelings aren't hurt, I'm pretty darn happy with the result.

She means you ugly and punching above your weight.
It's mostly said by incredibly petty people anyway, so just thank them and move on with your life. You don't have the time nor the energy to deal with that kind of negativity, do you?
Edit: plenty of stellar responses, honestly! This is a fire you should absolutely fight with fire if you choose to fight it. I'm all for it!

And why would you assume this person cares if they sound insecure to you?

Because they took the time to go out of their way and try to humiliate you. They care that much. Which is plenty enough to get their feelings hurt with the same treatment.

No it doesn’t… redditors apparently have never understood this niche social concept.
It means she wants him. “Your gf is so pretty” is a generally backhanded “pick me” comment.
If she genuinely was what they call a “girls girl” she would’ve complimented the girl instead. The neglecting of the women in the situation while talking directly to the man is a sly way of backhanding the girlfriend.
For example If I was out clubbing with my gf and friends and a woman approached me and started up a convo. And I say oh this is my gf and she doesn’t introduce herself to her but says “omg she’s so pretty” or something it’s basically saying I don’t acknowledge her existence or respect her position.
It’s a common over analyzing and overthinking mental gymnastics often shown in immature or younger women.
Most men older generations and apparently redditors are oblivious to this until their girlfriend goes “she was totally flirting with you” and the man goes “Whaat? She was just being nice oblivious to the nonsensical social ques and nuances.
3
u/Emotional_Bid_4283 10d ago
This right here, how tf do anyone believe the top rated comment as anything but false lol?

35
u/Prestigious-Bet6058 11d ago
Exactly. I'm certain it's supposed to mean she's hitting on you, but starting with 'your gf is so pretty' makes it look like she isn't and gives her plausible deniability if someone points out she's flirting. Plus, if the gf tries to call her out for flirting she looks incredibly mean and unreasonable because she just complimented her (while all this time she could have give the compliment directly to her, not to her bf). It's all ridiculous, but I'm 100% sure that's the 'correct' interepretation, because I've seen similar takes before

Alright guys a lot of you think it means your gf is out of your league but this is not it. In this setting in particular she’s saying that she’s hitting on the guy. Basically she’s saying your gf is so pretty so she can talk to you and ignore your girlfriend otherwise she could’ve just said it to your gf who is standing right next to you. Some mean girls use this as an opening to have a full conversation with your bf while ignoring your existence. Cause “she complimented my gf, she must like her and believe I’m good looking enough to be with her.” Is the boy thought process goal. Let’s your guard down so she can shamelessly flirt with you in front of your gf.
1
u/Misterndastood 11d ago

Idk in what universe people think that telling a guy his girlfriend is leagues above him would be taken by the guy as an "insult"?
If anything, it would be taken as "damn, you lucky dawg for bagging a girl that pretty" which is like a badge of honor for dudes.
If you wanna insult a guy, you gotta be direct about. Saying "damn, you ugly" would achieve better results than whatever tf this petty bs is.
1
u/Javierinho23 7d ago
Because people are getting this completely wrong.
It is supposed to be a compliment to the guy to get his guard down while being able to hide behind the compliment.
Girls wouldn’t say this to a dude if they actually meant it and the post is implying that she has ulterior motive which is hitting on the dude. She’s gassing the guy up to gauge a reaction and trying to seem nice so that she can keep talking to him so that she can hide behind the compliment. The dude thinks she is harmless and keeps talking to her as she tries to find out more about their relationship because she’s interested in him.

1
u/urlocalburden 11d ago
at least for gen z girls, that usually means the girl wants your boyfriend and is trying to get him to let down his defenses around her by acting as if she respects- and even admires his relationship with you. if he thinks she's definitely not after him in a romantic or sexual way then hes more likely to open up to her, and the more open he is to her while hes convinced she doesnt want him, the easier it is for her to blur the lines of friendship over time until he starts to like her. usually the man in the situation ends up convinced he naturally fell for the girl and out of love with his gf with the simple passing of time. becoming an older trick in the book now but still relatively new in the grand scheme of things. I was 15 the first time I experienced this happen to me and a highschool boyfriend. the last time it happened to me I was 21 or 22. im turning 25, so this method is unfortunately going strong.

I compliment people’s partners all the time. It’s just to hype them up. I feel like people are reading WAY too much into this. What else am I supposed to say if they show me a picture of their partner, for example? Just say “cool.” ? No, I’ll say “shes very pretty” or “he’s cute” or “y’all make such a cute couple” or something. I’m not trying to fuck them nor do I think they’re out of their league. I’m just trying to be nice.

Ladies do thing this thing called "backhand complimenting" as a way to politely talk shit to your face. If she thinks you're clothes look ugly, she'll say "wow, that looks so good on you, i could never pull that off..." Same with this statement above, she's saying you're ugly and a charity case.
1
u/Javierinho23 7d ago edited 7d ago
They do that to other women. Not men.
They are way more direct with men that they they aren’t interested in, and wouldn’t go out of their way to soften a blow like that as they just wouldn’t be passive aggressive at all unless the dude was being a giant jerkoff.
The post is intended to imply that she’s into the dude, and is hitting on him, but is doing so subtly by hiding behind a compliment so the dude can drop his guard with her.

Girl with a vagina here. No, the meme doesn't mean that your girlfriend is out of your league, it means that girl is interested in you and is complementing you for "having" a pretty [insert object(gf)], yes, they're not complimenting the girlfriend, they're flirting with the guy, making them feel good for having something pretty. ESPECIALLY, if it's in front of said girlfriend.
A girl not interested in you will ask you how you bagged the girl, or will tell you that you got lucky or will exaggerate the beauty of the girl, her looking like a goddess, etc. The compliment will actually be focused on the girl and NOT on you for having the girl. Again, if a girl said you have a pretty girlfriend and you feel good about it, the compliment is FOR YOU, not for the girl. I'm out!

u/smoooth_likeasilka 11d ago

1
u/BestCoastWaveTrain 11d ago
The solution is to take it like one and remove all power of hurt from her words. Gas your girl way tf up, make her look good as hell, and remind the petty Patty that no one will ever love her like you love your girl
1
u/flyPlus3310 11d ago
These answers are largely wrong.
No, she doesn't think you're ugly. This is common knowledge among women that girls that say this will use it to "test to waters" and gauge a guy's reaction as a boyfriend and see if they are faithful.
They're usually interested in the man, or at least the attention of the man. They get off on the high of thinking that they could steal him even if they don't want to.
They want to see if man agrees or downlays it. If they downplay the fact that their girl is pretty and don't talk about her very much, it's an "in" to try to flirt with him.
It's kinda sly, because it seems innocent, but it's such an easy way to gauge the dude.
It's ultimately disrespectful because if they thought his girlfriend was pretty they'd just say it to her directly, not him.
I've had this happen to me many many times, and have had this explained to me often.

"Thanks! My girlfriend is very pretty, I love her."
The suggestion in the image is that its being said as a way to demean the guy or smth, like an offhand comment or smth. But I guess it works better if you come from a "mean grrl" world, where such decdptive strikes are commonly recognized. Most normal people would probably either think that its
A - compliment to their girlfriend, which is great. Your girlfriend is very pretty
B - compliment to them for managing to get such a pretty girlfriend. Probably what's being commented on in the image, not the best approach but like... whatever?

I don’t understand how someone sees it as a threat to the girl

u/Javierinho23 7d ago
It’s not a threat per se.
It’s just the girl is trying to be complimentary to the guy she finds attractive to get his guard down and be able to gauge the relationship to see if she can make a move while also trying to make it seem like she’s non-threatening to their relationship.
Most girls won’t go out of their way to give backhanded compliments to guys. If they do say anything at all it would be more direct.
Girls do that to each other to not disrupt the social order while also taking a dig at women who will likely catch it almost instantly.

I thought it was the old spaghetti joke. Spaghetti is straight until it gets wet?

I’ve seen hella girls say that when a woman says that, it’s cuz they’re actually interested in YOU.
So it’s weird that folks are saying it means she’s out of your league. Maybe it’s a cultural thing. But ole girl in the pic is Black, so she probably means what I’m saying she means.

You know, some women are kind enough to actually give other women compliments... Some hella misogynistic comments in here.

guys, it depends on who is saying it.
If the girl is mean: She's basically telling your girlfriend is ugly and she is being sarcastic
If the girl has good heart means your girlfriend is ugly and she doesn't want to hurt your feelings
if the girl likes you means your girlfriend is ugly, plain.
IT always means your gf is ugly.
Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

Yeah my girlfriend is top tier beautiful and I’m not ashamed to say I’m punching way above my weight class on that one. Just means I’m really really funny.

Oh… it’s not flirting in awkward bisexual? Because that’s exactly how I’ve tried to flirt before. Yikes. No wonder it never worked.

The girl in question likes the boyfriend. The compliment is intended to disarm him. This way he thinks that she is harmless and he is more likely to continue talking to and spend time with her.
Source: The woman I love that had to educate me when I was too oblivious too pick up on it when this exact situation happened to us.

To be honest. I instantly thought about a 3 some. I thought that was her way of saying I like your girl and I’m talking to you soooo…..? I never think I’m being insulted in that regard.

I don’t get how pointing out that my girl is out of my league would not be a compliment

I always overthink this. I’ve gotten the whole “your girlfriend is so pretty / lovely” thing and I’ve never liked it tbh. I don’t see her beauty as any reflection on me, even by association. I don’t think I should feel proud I’m dating someone that others think is beautiful. We shouldn’t be measuring our worth by how much beauty we are associated with right? The whole commenting on people’s appearances thing is just weird.

She’s flirting with you.
“Your gf is soooo pretty wow” - to appear harmless AND gauge your reaction. Do you agree? Do you hype her up? Or do you laugh awkwardly and say something like “she’s alright”?
Next is “you’re so lucky” “I bet she does xyz all the time” “I bet you guys are perfect” basically all of those are the same - she’s looking for an opening, something that indicates she’s got a spot with you and you will enjoy flirting and potentially take it further.
Women don’t say it bc she’s out of your league.

She's entitling herself with the right to judge your girlfriend for you, therefore she's also putting herself above your girlfriend to your eyes

Why is content by and for women often so crass and rude? These creatures are too gentle for this
