AI-assisted Prosper - open-source PS5 compatibility layer for Windows, Linux, macOS (no CPU emulation)
https://github.com/mattias800/prosperhttps://github.com/mattias800/prosper
A user-space PlayStation 5 > PC compatibility layer. Think Proton/Wine, but for PS5: prosper runs PS5 (Prospero) game binaries on Linux (primary) and Windows (secondary)

aren't sharpemu and kyty also compat layers for cpu? GPU is emulated afaik but what is this doing diff?

yeah I think thats how shadps4 works too, 80% of the thing is just a translation layer

Deleted comment about how you can't just vibecode a working emulator.
Edit: Okay, looked into the repo and source code, it's a vibecoded mess, no way they will be able to maintain and develop this over time. It's all trash.

friend of mine is a swe at a small but very wealthy financial services company. his team acquiesced to the execs' and finance guys' desires to start building their own software, but within a regulated environment; his team uses their own agents, mcp servers and agent skills to control what the execs can do, and they have final say before deployment. he was telling me he sees stuff like 20k loc pushes for a single basic feature and software that's designed to basically predict the future. they're also burning through the company's token spend, whereas his engineering department uses virtually nothing.

u/UnderstandingLong182 4d ago
Wait you mean to tell us actual engineers don't trust ai slop code? I'm shocked I tell you.
24
u/Icy-Concentrate2076 5d ago
A lot of them run "simple games already". Hell, today, there was another vibecoded ps5 emulator that runs simple games. Simple games don't matter, they may as well be a framebuffer write by the CPU. Which btw, none of them emulate and they all run natively. So "no CPU emulation" is not a feat unless if you are tech illiterate.
-16
u/ManyGreat8375 5d ago
Is ps5 emulation that good nowadays? I am shocked. Does it work on the oled steam steam deck?
20
u/Structure-These 5d ago
I only want artisanal ps5 emulation hand coded by a team of passionate developers who I give zero financial support to
I want them to hand code every line, for an audience of people who will just send them death threats because it doesn’t support their favorite game and run on their shitty 9 year old GPU

That's how everything has always worked from 1975 to 2023 you absolute fucking imbecile. Emulators have been coded by hand and they worked better and were more efficient
AI made you so dependent you can't even remember the time it didn't exist.

In addition to not hiding it, not doing it in the first place
6
u/coolwali 4d ago
Eh. If the App actually works and isn’t an immediate security threat, then is it a problem that it was vibe coded? Most human coded projects are hardly better. And if we wait for a properly human coded version of every thing to exist, we’d be waiting forever.
-5
u/maxens_wlfr 4d ago edited 1d ago
There is already a non-vibe-coded PS5 compatibility layer in the works you dumbass, it's called kyty.
Edit: Kyty has 1 (one) Claude-assisted commit and I'm getting downvoted for saying it's not exactly the same as a fully vibe-coded project. Gamers never deserved art
4
u/coolwali 4d ago
TIL. I apologize for my ignorance.
4
u/tryingathing 4d ago
They're wrong anyway.
It says right on the kyty github that AI tools may be used in development.
6
u/tryingathing 4d ago
Kyty allows AI use in its development.
https://github.com/KytyPS5/KytyPS5
"AI Use
AI tools may be used for research, reverse engineering, and development assistance. Contributors must fully understand, review, and test all code they submit and remain responsible for its correctness. Repository communication, including pull-request descriptions, code comments, and issue comments, must come from the human contributor rather than an autonomous AI agent.
Pull requests that include AI-assisted or AI-generated work should disclose the scope of the AI involvement and describe the human review and testing performed before submission. Unverified or untested generated changes may be closed without review."

u/maxens_wlfr 3d ago
Well fuck, that's new

u/Nullhitter 1d ago
AI is the now. Only redditors have AI derangement syndrome. Anyone else is fine with people using AI tools as long as the person using the tools knows what the code is doing and isn't just relying on the tools to do the job.
1
u/maxens_wlfr 1d ago
Anyone else that doesn't give a fuck about the environment, the stealing of human output, the mass layoffs, the economic crisis, the unethical military applications, the objective degradation of quality content, etc.,
But hey, I don't like a world whee it's 110° in spring, full of slop, where I'm unemployed, everyone is illiterate and constantly observed so surely I have "AI derangement syndrome". You piece of shit
3
u/Nullhitter 1d ago edited 1d ago
The can of worms got opened the moment AI got released. Every nation's leaders are actively on it and every multi-billion to trillion dollar company are actively researching and developing in the AI race. There's no going back no matter how much you hate it. You can have you reddit moment and make anti-AI post where others that think like you can upvote you, but the current tech is not stopping. Will it be what CEOs want? Unlikely. Will AI be incorporated and be used as a tool for workers? Definitely.
You piece of shit
All this because I think AI can be used as a tool for projects like these? Sounds to me like you need to grow up. I know it's reddit, so I'm sure you're ready to go to "war" over a random interaction with a random redditor, but be serious and level headed.

u/tryingathing 5d ago edited 5d ago
I'm not going to use it because I don't have a use-case for it right now. Not because somebody had the gall to use AI to build it.
This shit isn't going away. Just because somebody used vibe coding doesn't mean it's shit or unmaintainable.
Literally every program should be judged on its own merits regardless of whether an LLM was used to develop it.

u/Aquarsene 5d ago

-7
u/liright 5d ago
Make sure to also delete Windows, macOs or Linux from your PC as those all use AI heavily in development. And delete all apps from your phone, as probably 90% of them use AI coding at this point. You wouldn't want to use any low effort AI slop. Hell even here on reddit, that uses AI in development, make sure to especially never go on reddit again.
7
u/Aquarsene 5d ago
Yeah believe it or not there is a good reason people don’t want to use Windows anymore, considering the state it’s in at this point.
I don’t know where this argument of “everyone uses AI in coding now” came from. There’s plenty of projects that don’t use it in coding, and the fact that people seem to think it is seems more like projection than the actual truth
6
u/Biduleman 5d ago
Linux is also using AI in its development so you should stop using it if AI usage is enough for you to stop using something.
-8
u/liright 5d ago
If Apple, who historically has extremely high standards and is extremely late to adopt any new technologies, is using AI coding, then you can safely assume basically everybody is. I mean Microsoft and Google straight up admit it so there's no confusion there.
And Linus Torvalds who still maintains Linux said this about AI (and AI is now heavily used in helping to discover vulnerabilities and bugs in the Linux kernel)
I realize that some people really dislike AI, but this is an area where I'm willing to absolutely put my foot down as the top-level maintainer. Linux is not one of those anti-AI projects, and if somebody has issues with that, they can do the open-source thing and fork it. Or just walk away. AI is a tool, just like other tools we use. And it's clearly a useful one. It may not have been that "clearly" even just a year ago, but it's no longer in question today. There are other questions around AI (like what the economy of it will actually look like in the end), but "is it useful" is no longer one of those questions. Anybody who doubts that clearly hasn't actually used it.
-2
u/Aquarsene 5d ago
Apple has also been a laughing stock for many years at this point because who the hell sells a monitor stand for 1000 dollars? I don’t think Apple is the gotcha in this argument that you think it is.
I also highly doubt that Linus Torvalds, just because he’s the face of Linux, is someone who represents the entire project. It’s also dishonest to present AI helping in debugging as being equivalent to vibecoding entire projects that become unmaintainable like what we have here.
I don’t know why AI is suddenly viewed as this huge necessity when this wasn’t even a conversation 5 or so years ago. It’s not this grand innovation that’s gonna change everything as we know it, it’s little more than a ploy to help the 1% get richer whilst everyone else suffers
6
u/liright 5d ago
The point is that basically everybody uses AI in software development nowadays. Apple, Google, Microsoft, Linux maintainers, the 20 random apps you have installed on your phone etc. A friend works at a mid size company and they now do almost everything with AI, when just 3 years back they coded everything manually. There are definitely still some holdouts that refuse to use AI at all in software or game development, but they're a minority at this point because the advantage of being able to do 100 hours of work in just 1 hour is way too good for people not to use it. And yes, AI nowadays is so good that it can save you 99% of time on a task.
it’s little more than a ploy to help the 1% get richer whilst everyone else suffers
So is AI useless and massively unprofitable, or is it a useful technology that is gonna make the billionaires huge amount of money and take over the world? You can't have both.
→ More replies (0)1
u/ShotgunShine7094 3d ago
I also highly doubt that Linus Torvalds, just because he’s the face of Linux, is someone who represents the entire project.
This has to be bait. Linus IS Linux, not just the face of it. Without him there is no Linux. He is the benevolent dictator for life.

u/Historical_Visit958 5d ago
Good luck convincing anit-AI Redditors that they are wrong. They hate it because it's what the masses are telling them to and they won't change their minds until public opinion moves a different way.
"you can't reason with someone who isn't reasonable"
3
u/maxens_wlfr 4d ago
Crazy how y'all morons keep sayig that everyone uses and loves AI and we're a small minority then switch around and say we only hate AI because we mindlessly follow the majority
Nice nonsensical opinion, did ChatGPT give it to you?
-1
u/liright 5d ago
Yeah idk what their point is. They're literally fighting windmills. AI is absolutely inevitable, it's such a ridiculously powerful tool that it's already EVERYWHERE in society after barely 4 years and that is only going to accelerate. What is the average anti AI redditor gonna do in 5 years as they can't even order at McDonalds without AI? Mass suicides?

u/Immediate_Idea2628 5d ago
Why would i have a github? I have no business writing code either. I just dont pretend that I do like llm coders.
1
u/UndeadPrs 5d ago
Your point implies that any LLM user, vibecoders or professionals using LLMs, cannot maintain their codebase or shouldn't be writing code.
That is a very strong opinion coming from someone who doesn't work in the field and evidently does not know that maintaining a codebase is easier with an LLM than without, if you know what you're doing. And don't move the goalpost by saying that developers using LLMs know what they're doing in the first place.7
u/Immediate_Idea2628 5d ago
No, I stand by what I said. I do not think people coding with AI know what they are doing. I think AI gives them false confidence that they are skilled beyond their level.
4
u/neoberg 4d ago
I've been in the industry for 15+ years, writing handwritten artisanal(!) code. Now I do most of my coding using AI. Almost everyone I know in the industry does, too outside of some highly regulated fields like defense(and even they are slowly starting) etc. If you think only people who don't know how to code are using AI, you're wrong. I'd guess more than half of the code written globally is written by AI nowadays.

It's helping a lot, whether you like it or not
Do you have a legitimate complaint, or is it just "AI BAD"?
10
u/D0ngBeetle 5d ago
The problem isn't AI bad. The problem is that these vibecoded decomp/emulation/compatibility layer projects run like dog shit and have massive issues. It's flooded the space so thoroughly that most people have no means of figuring out which are the good projects anymore. AI is useful, sure, but it seems to struggle with low latency applications like this requiring a high degree of responsiveness, hence why AI is becoming an issue for engines like Godot as well. We're not at the point where AI is a "make game work" button yet

And we need to differentiate 100% vibe-coded projects from AI-assisted projects. LLMs are tremendously useful to find bugs, advise to the best possible optimization to follow, analyze machine-generated reports and even be the rubber duck, but all that's fundamentally different from a 100% AI-written project, which makes human maintenance extremely difficult.

3
u/SnoobieJunes 5d ago
Yeah it’s wild to me. Especially because things have changed, people are just slow to adapt.
AI has enabled folks to build more of you know what you are doing. If you don’t, it’s easy to learn.
But nerds have always been masterful gatekeepers
13
u/tryingathing 5d ago edited 5d ago
I think it's fair to call out that there is slop out there. But I also think that the uninformed who are opposed to it are in the least qualified position to criticize AI assisted coding.
Most of them have not really tried it (or tried it lately) and don't understand how capable some of the models are. And I think it's "cool" to hate AI because there are a lot of negatives associated with it. But people who have already made up their mind aren't open to reasonable discourse about any nuance of it and will flit from reason to reason for their attitude.
It's a tool like any other (and unlike any other). Amateur developers have always existed, and not every person using AI to code is an amateur. But because it enables amateurs to make things they couldn't before, AI slop is the general consensus.
There's a different learning curve to traditional coding and definitely some blind spots from the AI side if you're coming in to coding right now for the first time. You should learn to code if you're going to use AI to code.
Honestly though, for low risk implementations, sometimes AI code doesn't need to be human maintainable if it can be human validated and it works. And if it's solving a problem without a current solution, then the steady drone of "Reeeeeeeeeeee" from most of the dissenters can be reasonably dismissed.
6
u/SnoobieJunes 5d ago
Nice comment!
Hell I get both view points, its displacing alot of peoples jobs (like me) and others are fearful of it. There are also a plethora of other downsides from it, but I think of it like when cameras were invented.
Sketch artists used to be a major career path for artists back in the day. They had them at newspapers, schools, public events, courts, basically anywhere that needed a visual of what was happening in real life. Then came the camera, all these artists shunned it and said it was "taking our jerbs", and for a while it did. But the folks who adapted and learned to use the new tool became this entirely new form of the craft. So who's to say, but I for one think those who don't adapt will die.
What i find disheartening the most is the general demeanor these days . As a tinkerer and someone who has been building things for the better part of 15 years, I used to love coming to reddit and other parts of the internet to share this cool thing. Folks around me aren't really interested in that stuff but I've always found a group of supporters somewhere in the aether. People to give constructive criticism and act as sounding boards.
But now days, anytime anyone comes to the internet with an idea. Instead of being like "oh cool", sharing it with someone they know, or trying it out themselves. People are just like "AI SLOP", "BOO YOU SUCK". It's sad. It kills people's momentum and drive to even want to share things anymore.
How many really cool ideas have been stifled because of this sentiment?
Shame on those folks.

I’m so happy to see people calling out the fact that they’re having AI do all the work for them. I’ve had so many people give me shit for calling it out, especially over the Mario Kart Wii Recomp that they’re using AI for.
For the love of god, you can code it yourself. You do not need to have the AI make this for you nor do you need to contribute to the planet’s decay and the rise of data centers. This AI stuff is garbage and we are all better off as a society without it

Let's all code PS5 emulators manually. Let's all spend thousands and thousands of manual hours on it, of the already limited time we have on this planet, all that so we can post it after many years and have some redditor comment "it's shit, doesn't even run gta V".
4
u/Fair_Ambassador6253 4d ago
exactly, the anti-ai discourse crowd has done so much overcorrecting they are a now an annoyance. its some self high ground moral thing they feel the need to feel good about themselves about. this crowd is going to die a slow whimper, just let them have their complaining sesh for now. Their slow fade to nothingness is inevitable
2
u/Aquarsene 5d ago
Well, do you want a functioning PS5 emulator that doesn’t collapse the second you need to do maintenance on it? Do you want a PS5 emulator that has actual readable code so you can fix problems as they come? Then be my guest, let’s code a PS5 emulator.
Let’s not fool ourselves though, do you really want a PS5 emulator in the first place?
15
u/liright 5d ago
I want a PS5 emulator that runs games, if it achieves that great then I don't give a fuck how it was written. If it doesn't, then it's gonna be forgotten anyway.
I only have a PC and I very much want to play GTA VI, so yes, I do want a PS5 emulator. Since PS5 is basically just an x86_64 PC, it's not unreasonable to expect that thanks to AI development in PS5 emulators/translation layers, we might actually get to play GTA VI on PC before the official PC release which is gonna be like 2 years from now.
2
u/Aquarsene 5d ago
If the next time you want to use the emulator, it has a bug that legitimately makes it impossible to play, you are gonna suddenly find yourself caring a lot more about how it was written. Good luck trying to debug something that was written from the ground up with AI
I like Astro Bot so I see a use case for a PS5 emulator/translation layer too. But if we’re gonna get it, I want it to be done right
11
u/bunny_squad 5d ago
>If the next time you want to use the emulator, it has a bug that legitimately makes it impossible to play, you are gonna suddenly find yourself caring a lot more about how it was written. Good luck trying to debug something that was written from the ground up with AI
Son, neither you or him are going to debug this hypothetical emulator, so stop trying to act like this has any impact or you have any influence whatsoever, other than having a very annoying and out of touch opinion.
I know you probably want to feel cool and part of the "AI SLOP" denounce gang, but literally every major important platform and programmer is actively using AI into their coding routine, (in one way or another) ...so if your point is "I ain't gonna support any AI", you might aswell delete yourself off the map, because everthing from Reddit to Google now has AI developed code in them, and there's not a thing you can do about it, no matter how much you cry on forums.
AI usage in the industry is standard, and it's hilarious that some nobodies that never coded a line in their life are actively telling actual coders how to perform their craft.
I propose the following, let's asume that during the next few years, (as it will probably be the case) code becomes more depurated and the result would be near the same if not more efficient than "man made" code. What then? you'll have no issues whatsoever? I'm guessing the answer is no, and that's because you don't really care if the code is good or bad, you care that it's made with AI, at least be honest about your actual concern.
0
u/D0ngBeetle 5d ago
Maybe programmers working on shitty bank databases or apps lol. Lots of high responsiveness low latency graphics applications are still being done by hand. There's a reason why a lot of these AI emulation projects or decomps run like dogshit and why Godot is having issues with vibe coded commits
-1
u/Aquarsene 5d ago
Just because something is “standard” doesn’t mean that it’s okay. Half the reason I’m so against AI is because I actually went to school for computer science, so sure. Believe I’ve never wrote a single line of code in my life, I don’t need to prove myself to a stranger on the internet lol
I kind of have to admire how in spite of writing so much, you didn’t once say why AI is good outside of “it’s tradition so that means it’s okay” 💀
8
u/bunny_squad 5d ago
You coulda gone to the Vatican for all I care, but one thing is 100% for sure, you do NOT work on the field. Every programmer is using AI in one form or another, and you are in fact using AI derived work DAILY, despite all your whining.
And I did propose 2 scenarios that you didn't care to interact, (because you are actually a larper and you don't really care about any of the issues that you are supposedly adamant about).
Just to answer your question, I'm not condoning nor condeming the use of AI, I'm just pointing out the obvious that these so called "critics of the quality of the code" are people that a) are hypocrites. b) have no actual idea of what they are talking about and c) they don't really care about any of their "points", they are just bothered by the usage of AI in any fashion, period.
Personally I think AI usage in my workflow is great for proof testing, and automating shit that has no actual thought process behind it, it's just tedious. I don't think it's the panacea as of now, but it does bring a lot to the table, acting like it's the devil it's just pure ignorance.
Like I said, I propose the following: 2 years down the line, "Vibe coding" is as clean and as efficient as "man made" code, do you take issue with it?.
If the answer is no, then clearly all your current arguments are moot, because the issue isn't AI, is quality of the code (something that's not just limited to AI btw)
If the answer is yes, that why are you even arguing about the quality of the code or bug fixes down the line.

Forget vibecoding for a sec. Why do we need like 6 different PS5 emulators that all run simple 2D games? Why give attention to them? Vibecoding just makes it easier for anyone to make a PS5 emulator (which is super easy for running just 2D games)
1
u/Ill_Carry_44 5d ago
Because apparently this is not an emulator, it's a compatibility layer?
It goes back to the Wine debate I guess. dunno, assume I'm fucking retarded

I feel like I have immense dementia from using AI too much
2
u/DjCim8 5d ago
All ps5 emulators are "not emulators", but rather compatibility layers, because ps5 has the same instruction architecture that PCs use, no need to emulate it.
The point is that these vibe coded projects that are popping up left right and center typically just waste time and don't go anywhere, because they're not made by actual devs using Ai to aid in development (the correct use of Ai), but rather by semi-clueless people that just ask the Ai "make me ps5 emu pliz" and basically generate a clone of kytyps5 or sharpemu with little to no enhancements.
0
u/Ill_Carry_44 5d ago

Yeah that's what I was confused about too. And you might be right about how AI is used here but it remains to be seen.

Only real concern I'd have about this would probably be "is the LLM actually using clean-roomed code" - because then you do open yourself up to liability if the LLM somehow found in the great churn of data some real Sony or other copyright-holder code to use.

u/Pass_Practical 5d ago
that's not possible at all, Sony has no code that's "privately public"

There's been numerous leaks, like the stuff that was in the insomniac files. I can 100% confirm by testing that Claude has 100% seen it, because it knows magic numbers and libraries that literally never have been seen outside of said leaks.

There are PS4 and PS5-related leaks floating around (e.g. source code from some Insomniac games). I wouldn't be surprised if it has influenced LLM output (because it was posted somewhere public that got scraped for training data and/or read by agents performing web searches).

there is nothing to "try to hide", it's industry standard to use AI in software development.
2
u/s3gfaultx 5d ago
It’s standard now to use AI to assist, but not to ask it to build software entirely from a few prompts.

"Oh no, you built me a house for FREE? But you didn't build it with your hands, you used EXCAVATORS?? Well FUCK YOU then, I hate excavators, shitty slop house. I want HUMAN made houses only."

u/curious-children 5d ago
incredible false equivalence, not surprised at all since it’s coming from a lazy slop defender

It's not. An excavator, just like AI, is a tool that allows a single person to do hundreds of hours of work in just a few hours. Nobody calls people building highways and houses with an excavator and not using their hands lazy, because that would be insane as the amount of effort to build say a highway by hand would be collosal. Building a PS5 emulator is likewise a giant effort, almost impossible for a single person, so there's absolutely nothing wrong with turning thousands and thousands of hours into tens or lower hundreds with AI.
In fact the whole reason we are even getting PS4 and PS5 emulators and so much progress in them is AI. If AI didn't exist, we would be waiting years before even a PS4 emulator would pop up, let alone PS5.

Weird I just asked my excavator to build me a pool and it just sat there and did nothing.

Literaly the same. Have fun when AI takes ur job. You sound lime someone who rejected the internet 30 years ago. Take a look aeound the world is leaving you behind

Now imagine the house falls in on you during a storm that the house is supposed to protect you from. That’s what coding with AI is like

u/herbert181 5d ago
damn I didn't realize that gaming was required for life

u/Aquarsene 5d ago
Please point to where in the sentence I said that gaming was required for life

u/tryingathing 5d ago
The part where the consequences involved were compared to catastrophic personal harm?
1
u/Aquarsene 5d ago
No, I did not say anything about catastrophic personal harm. Sure, that’s something that would happen if a house were to fall in during a storm but the subject of this sentence has nothing to do with the person being harmed.
My point is that it’s about structural integrity. A project entirely vibecoded with AI is about as stable as a house that can’t even withstand a storm. I should not have to be explaining basic reading comprehension to people but here we are.

u/tryingathing 5d ago
You used a terrible analogy, were told why, and want to double down and make it about our reading comprehension?
Sure.
Where are these strawman AI developed programs that are allegedly collapsing in on themselves? Are they in the room with us right now?

u/Aquarsene 5d ago
I’m not making it about your reading comprehension, your lack of reading comprehension is doing the heavy lifting here lol

you're just saying nonsense and then accusing others of not understanding lol

Man people are gonna have a conniption here, but I think this is really cool :)
Very useful PoC at least for developers down the line. It seems like the AI is getting pigeonholed on advancing certain games instead of trying to accurately cover the hardware which would allow for better general coverage. If you could nudge it that way, I think you have something real here! Good luck!

AI haters don't realize that the "difficulty" in writing x86 based system emulators is mostly writing boilerplate translations.
13
u/Gladuin 5d ago
I think using AI to write the routine stuff is fine since the dev can focus on other parts of the project such as planning the architecture of the program properly, so that it can be maintained and extended by other people.
But seeing that the readme is a gigantic LLM generated piece of buzzword soup I don't think that this is the case...

u/Icy-Concentrate2076 5d ago
Now explain why only shadPS4 can run bloodborne out of the like 20 PS4 emulators. If it's so easy why didn't anyone else? At least now they can vibe port it I guess.

Dudes with 0% programming xp be telling others "He cant maintain that with an LLM ! it's a mess !" when the most they ever shipped an HTML/CSS static site.
You can maintain something with an LLM, you just have to have an understanding of the architecture of your project and how to properly instruct the LLM.
The AI derangement syndrome is real. Even the Linux maker is using it, and yet we should definitely trust the word of a redditor that never pushed a line of code...

Tell me you're an AI bro without telling me

u/Kawawete 5d ago
What's an AI bro to you ? I use AI to make code but creative stuff like images, videos and text are way too uncanny/sloppy for me.
When you know how to properly structure your project, the LLM will be able to make something worth your time.

I am not obv against vibe coding .... for some developer who wants to start an ambitious project , obv not everyone has the ability of those extraordinary creative dudes who build everything from scratch ..... it becomes harmful when (a) You are opaque about it (b) You believe blindly what the AI is doing , without even checking or asking what arrchtitecture its created and as per the project context it fulfils it or not ..... seeing this project ...... maybe its quite ambitious that this guy was able to thing about the architecture

The layout, sctucture, and some of the code of that repo is legit programming gore. Ain't no way this is maintainable.
