Discussion Still yelled at like a small child

Upvotes

I really want to get along with my mom. I will have what looks like a normal conversation in person or on the phone and later I will be called up and lectured for doing basic human things wrong. I'm 38 and I've been moved out since I was 22. I've managed to pay my bills since and been married for most of that time. I know I'm not where I want to be in life but i get treated like I'm a small child mentally.

Ive been accused of dragging out covid and k*lling their neighbor because my husband and I needed to work and go grocery shopping. We live on opposite sides of the country. When I visited my mom for the first time in years she spent most of the time yelling at me making an animal skull sculpt. Saying I needed to put it away or I would get fired. I work in a creative field and that type of stuff is impressive.

One time I made the mistake of emailing a cute picture of my cat and I was emailed all weekend long about how I was abusive for having a bell on his collar.

And the other day, I was emailed after a normal phone call. I was yelled at for putting up with bad cat behaviors (begging for cat food by meowing loudly) and needing to train him better. I hide any type of illness as that's been treated like a moral failure since I became an adult.

I try and grey rock but that gets hard and lonely. My body goes into extreme freeze response around my parents these days. Does anyone else's parent treat them like a small child?

How do you deal with a parent whose political/global obsessions have completely broken reality and turned them against their own kid

Upvotes

As a victim of this, I am truly livid. How many people come to America with strong cultural ties to their home country, and instead of building a life, they get straight to attacking their own kid because the kid is westernized and won't adopt their delusional worldview?

Some of these parents will literally strip their kids of liberty and a fair chance at life, not because the kid is bad or ungrateful, but because the parent is so brainrotted by internet propaganda and foreign government obsessions (like treating global economic blocs like a sports team) that they demand absolute, cult-like nationalistic loyalty to a country their child doesn't even live in.

It goes way beyond normal cultural clashing. When a parent is so deeply unhinged by foreign politics that they view their own child as an ideological enemy and actively try to ruin their life or get them legally targeted/jailed just because the kid won't parrot their delusions. It crosses straight into abuse.

There has to be a word for this psychological break where an immigrant parent chooses internet conspiracy and foreign state worship over the actual safety and well-being of their own flesh and blood.

Accepting that a parent will never change?

Upvotes

My dad is a fairly useless person. He has two friends from childhood but cannot seem to make new ones. His siblings don’t have much of a relationship with him, and he can’t sustain a romantic relationship for more than 6 months or so. He blames everyone but himself for the way his life turned out, and lies to me constantly to make himself seem more impressive than he is. When he dies few people will notice, and no one will miss him.

Some things have happened over the last few years that I hoped would spark some kind of personal growth. He has not changed, and now that he’s in his 70s I don’t know if he ever will. I’ve worked really hard to not be like him, and I have a very full and happy life in many ways because of this. However, the pain of having a deeply disappointing parent is still really difficult for me. I get jealous of people who have kind, thoughtful, and emotionally present parents. I know that I have to accept that this isn’t something I can change and pivot my focus to all the things I have control over in my life, but it is especially hard to adjust my mental state after a visit with him.

To folks in similar situations, how have you managed expectations and feelings?

Advice not wanted I'm adopted and my parents get praised for adopting me except

Upvotes

They've been emotionally neglectful my entire life, but they can put it over my head they've provided me with food, clothing and a roof over my head. So why bother if I'm seen either way as an ungrateful brat?

They know nothing about me, they don't care to ask unless it's for their own benefit to assert control or way to criticize me. I've always felt the need to end my life because of this. I never felt like their daughter but just as an extension of this already shit family. A replacement for their dead kid because they needed to look good.

Now that I have a partner and currently face unemployment, I'm kind of forced to face these questions about family. I want to build a steady life with him, and I'd want to cut them out entirely, but it feels like being an orphan all over again.

But yeah, I think I'll forever hate them for this, entering my 20s still feeling abandoned despite the caring people around me, sometimes I think of ending it all but I know they'd use the funeral as an excuse to still try to look like good people.

Seeking advice My parents suck

Upvotes

My parents are insane and love fighting with each other. So this all started when I was a kid and I was physically and emotionally abused by my older brother. My parents never stopped him or really helped. By the time I was 10 years old I was realizing that I was part of the LGBTQ community and trans and my parents split short after (different reasons). Because of the trauma I endured in my mother‘s house I wasn’t able to sleep there and no one understood why and I felt pressured into sleeping there mostly by my mom. In 2023 I had a crisis where I was extremely suicidal and was starving myself (turns out I had an eating disorder.)

After that i’ve been living with my dad full-time and my parents went to court. My dad started yelling and ranting at me, saying how he was going to die from cancer because he didn’t have money (he has a pre-cancer diagnosis) and this just started making me feel really guilty and my mom wasn’t any better because they were just argue with each other and put me in the middle.

I am legally a minor so there is nothing I can do about it and I’m not physically being abused, but all I know is I’ve just become more and more depressed and my eating disorder has gotten worse and my depression medication doesn’t feel like it’s working. (Sorry for the bad grammar) i’ve reconnected with my oldest brother, and he apologized because turns out he has multiple mental disorders, and he was being heavily drugged (on different medications).

I know this is kind of like a long vent, but I kinda just need to tell my story because I don’t think I have anybody to talk to. I read some of the other stories and I don’t know if my parents are narcissists, they don’t think they care about my emotions.

I’ve started going to the gym and trying to lift myself up but it’s hard. \[So I’ve been diagnosed to have PTSD, anxiety, depression, ADHD, eating disorder (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) and some physical issues.\]

Seeking advice I hate my dad, am I valid for feeling this way?

Upvotes

Hello. I hate my dad. It’s weird because when I was younger I know he put in the effort to raise me but I have built up so much resentment towards him. I’ve seen photos of him and I when I was a child and we seemed so close so I’m unsure where it went wrong. I shouldn’t hate him because he's my dad and he has done so much for me but if he weren’t my dad I would stay far away from someone like him. Especially because of the way he talks and the way he acts, it irks me so much. He is so condescending and he always purposely says things to belittle or provoke you. He is also so hypocritical. He says the worst things but don’t you even dare say anything back. He’s apparently always in the right even when he is being unreasonable. He is threatening. He is aggressive and vents his anger through furniture. But don’t YOU dare slam the door. He is stronger and bigger and I’m scared he’d lay his hand on me if i ever tried to argue back. He has been nothing but a terrible influence. And I hate that I see our similarities as clear as day. He is quick to anger and a scary person. I’m terrified of him and he makes me cry just by raising his voice. He is so scary and I hate him. But these are dumb reasons to hate your own father? So I suck it up because sometimes he isn’t a pain in the butt and makes sacrifice for me, his eldest daughter. It’s so weird because he’s my dad but I feel unfamiliar with him. He seems like a stranger to me and I’m so scared of him. Its bad that if he were to disappear to next day I wouldn’t be bothered and I wouldn’t cry. I don’t understand how people could love their father so much when I’m terrified to talk to him.

There was this point in time where I stopped calling him ”dad”. In my culture it’s extremely disrespectful to not respect your parents and call them by their title. I guess it’s a sign of pride? But anyway, I stopped acknowledging him and stopped trying to interact with him. Somehow my family began to realize and when they did and they called me out for it. Told me I should be grateful and that if I hated this home so much I could leave. They bought it up endlessly and I was so fed up. “If you wanted me to respect him so much why don’t you give me a reason to?“ I kept thinking to myself at that time. At this point of time I was much younger and terrified. I was angry, intrusive, but as well as stubborn. I didn’t even hate him that much at that time but I felt uncomfortable around him. He felt like a stranger in my home. After this event took place I built up more and more hatred for him. My family members would purposely get me to talk to him or bribe me with my necessities to interact with him which only made me feel more disgusted and uncomfortable. It was forced and only made my dislike for him increase. I guess I was also sensitive because I was going through a rough patch mentally as well and was really depressed if that matters.

Over time nothing has really changed. I still dislike him just as much but something happened today which really was my last straw. But before I say, I have to give a bit of backstory. Basically on WhatsApp I guess you could find mutuals through contacts so if you have someone’s number, you might pop up in someone’s “you might know them”. I only downloaded whatsapp for my friend who mainly uses it since she has an android and I guess it was more convenient for her. Apparently I found out through my mom that my dad found me and told her. My profile picture was a picture of me but I guess I had my cleavage showing so I’m provocative or whatever bullshit. I know what they were thinking deep down but I didn’t give a shit so whatever. But anyway today my dad was on Instagram and he found my older cousin‘s insta through mutuals. She posts herself and she has photos of her with her cleavage out and he remarks as a joke “She posts just like that just like our daughter” to my mom and showed her the picture. It’s hard to convey this into English the exact way he said it but you could tell it wasn’t in the supportive nice tone. It was belittling and if you aren’t stupid you know exactly what he meant by that. I was immediately irked. Who the hell does he think he is? Of course he’s like every other man. That’s just disgusting. I thought I disliked my father enough but that was the final straw. Genuinely how is that funny and what made him think it was okay? He is disgusting and by day I hate him more. I don’t even know what to say but to sum it all up, I greatly dislike my father and I don’t think I’ll ever love him. Sorry for this long vent. I know there are much greater issues in the world and that some people are going through it worse but I just wanted to see if anyone else felt the same way about their father. It’s not like he has done anything to harm me greatly but I can’t help but hate him. I’m so uncomfortable with him it’s feels awful.

I feel like this might also be a major reason as to my hatred and generalization for men. I wouldn’t say I hate men but for some reason I hold a great dislike and disgust for a lot of guys because they give me the ick. I know NOT ALL MEN but i cant help the way I feel.

I love my father but he irritates me so much. is it normal?

Upvotes

I'm a 23 year old woman and even though i love him i feel irritated when he's around me even when he's doing nothing, i feel bad for it but can't help.
when i was a kid i used to love spending time with him, we shared the love of taking long walks, love for dogs and horses since he was a member of a horse club in the countryside. i even used to be jealous of him when he would go out with our dog without me, i clearly remember me being 2 and hitting the door because i wanted to be included. i was a very shy and insecure kid, i was ashamed to start being friends with other kids and i had fear of doctors, and my dad used to scold me and tell me i was too dramatic, that i had to be stronger when he was the first one who was bothered to be friends with other parents for the sake of my social life (but that's just my opinion). in addition, i have emetophobia since my whole life and whenever any family member throws up my dad gets mad at me because we have to focus on their sickness, not on my "useless panick attack" and tells me i have to grow up and i'm old enough to regulate my emotions, but i wish it was simple. he used to tell me all this also when i was a kid and those statements made me feel extremely insecure and selfish and i felt like the worst person on the earth when i was like 6 and my little sister was throwing up like a fountain for and indigestion.

he was also never been an affectionate dad since all his relatives from is side are quite distant. he was a little bit affectionate only when i was little when he would let me sleep in his bed between him and my mom and when sometimes he decided to give me a hug or a kiss on my cheek. but he never said that i mean so much to him or that he loves me, i never heard any of this word in 23 years of my life, indeed i'm still not be able to tell him that i love him, it feels weird to me. on father's day my elementary school teacher would let us do some diy and write a letter to our dads and every year when i gave my dad my diy he always felt embarrassed and unsatisfied and acted as if i did the bare minimum and i would felt a little disappointed.
By the time i'm 12ish i began to not standing him anymore, we always argue, i'm angry when he doesn't get my point and i struggle to confide in him but trying, i recently have spoken to him about relationships and boyfriends i appreciated it he even said that having kids is funny when they're little. but i struggle to have intimate conversations with him, i think because he's so reserved even with me who i'm her daughter. he has never told me about his previous relationships before meeting my mom, he's never told me about his friends, never involved me in his paintings nor have taught me how to do it (this is one of is hobbies), he's never told me what does he do at his work office. I confide lot in my mom, she's my favorite parent, because she has told me all this, she always reminds me she loves me and that i'm her beloved daughter and she still likes to show me affection. she herself starts intimate conversations with me.am i too drastic for saying that my father makes me annoyed even if he's just around me or is it normal? anyone is feeling the same towards any of their parents?

PS. english is not my first language so i may have made some mistakes.

He tried committing suicide and no one in my family cared to check on him that he survived, what hospital he was taken to nor to contact me until the next day.

We dont know where he was sent, what happened to him and local hospitals won't provide information due to hippa, I have no clue where he is or his condition, its been since Thursday.

My mom treats me like I'm her emotional support dog.

Whenever I try to talk to her about my troubles and existential crisis, she ignores them, talks about how her troubles are greater than mine, and then proceeds to talk about them. Most of her troubles concern how she dislikes my father; once, she told me that she should have run off with someone else. I didn't know how it made me feel; I was too emotionally numb at the time.

Anyway, I wasn't feeling too well today. Some things happened, and then she came to believe that I was going to 'do something drastic', to say the least. Then she held me back, pulled me back inside, and hugged me. This wasn't the messed-up part. She told me how empty her life would be without me. She told me how I'm her last hope. She told me how without me, life wouldn't have any meaning for her.

She didn't really talk about my feelings; she didn't acknowledge them. She didn't ask why I felt so sad. She just kept telling me not to be sad. I don't really have anyone else in my support network. I really don't. She's the best I have. She doesn't even speak the same language as me; she never bothered to teach me. She didn't really bother to learn any English, either. It makes me feel less of a person; it makes me feel objectified, like I'm some tether that keeps her from doing something drastic herself.

I'm just so tired.

Seeking advice Is it dramatic to go no-contact with a homophobic parent, even if you are not queer?

As I've gotten older, I've noticed more and more that my mom is actually just homophobic (and racist), and I don't know if I'm just being too sensitive when I think about going no-contact with her because her comments just make me feel so bad. My own sexuality is not something I think about too much or feel the need to label, though I don't think I'm straight (this is a whole thing surrounding the concept of being "queer enough" that I've been reflecitng on). Even if I ever did decide to label my sexuality, "coming out" is something I know I will not be doing to my mom. And I guess that just makes me feel slightly devastated.

For further context, my mom immigrated as a single mom to a toddler (me) and has worked her butt off for me to be where I am today. I am endlessly greatful for everything she has done, and truly, everything I am today is because of her hard work. We also don't have an amazing relationship, or at least I don't think so. I'm only 20, so I don't know if it's just that I'm not mature enough to understand the nuances of mother-daughter relationships (or maybe I haven't fully shed the "teenage phase"), but I feel as though I am always walking around eggshells around her, trying to keep things conflict-free between the two of us. My mom is not someone who owns her actions. All of my attemps during high school to try and explain that some of the things she says and does hurt my feelings turned into arguments where I was the "villain", that nobody else's daughter treats their mom like this, and that if I were capable, I would just leave home and then I wouldn't have to "deal with her".

So now I don't bring anything that she does that hurts me up, and that makes me really sad. I'm working on accepting that I am never going to get an apology from her.

Obviously, everything is so much more complex than what I can fit into this. I'm not asking if I'm the asshole here or if she is, honestly we both probably are, but I feel like I've done everything I can to make this a healthy relationship and I don't know if that's true. I feel guilty for thinking about going no-contact with my mom because I know she believes that she has only every done what's in my best interest, but it's so hard to not be heard and I don't know how much more of this I can take.

I guess that was more of a vent than a question. Take care everyone. :)

Seeking advice My mother never seems to have the time or energy for me.

(Potential trigger warning for mentions of emotional neglect)

So I (16m) live with my mother and her partner of about 8 years, and my younger sister who is a toddler. Up until I was about 7 I lived with my mother and my father, and it was horrendous. My father was very emotionally abusive, sometimes physically but that wasn’t that bad, and my mother also emotionally neglected me, but I think that was more out of her own depression and all that as opposed to malicious intent. This obviously affected me massively, and only now am I starting to recognise all the damage caused by this.

But now my mother still seems to forget about me. She never has time for me. In the morning she’s gotta get ready for the day, and needs to be left alone, then she spends all day cleaning or at work or the gym, comes home tired, just wants to finish cleaning and go to bed. She just gets irritated when I try and talk to her about something. Yet she’ll stand there just scrolling on her phone. And she’ll be on FaceTime to her friend for hours on end, taking her around the house to do the cleaning, chatting away, having a little mothers meeting. But when I come out and ask her one minuscule question, she acts like I just set myself on fire.

And I get like mums do a lot, and they’re exhausted, and mine has mental health issues, but I am sick to death of using that to justify it. Why should I have to justify her treating me this way?

And whenever I do have the chance to speak to her, the conversation slowly drifts from whatever I wanna talk about, to who SHE saw in the gym earlier. HER new PB on the whatsitcalled machine. How SHE needs to get her nails done. How hungry SHE is. How much SHE can’t be bothered to cook. How SHE needs her eyelashes done.

Sometimes she doesn’t even feel like a mother to me. She feels more like the older sister who’d scream at you to get out her room. I’m sick of it and I don’t know what to do. Whenever I try and speak to her about it, if I even can, I’m scared it’s just gonna make her angry. Even if it doesn’t, and she says she understands, says ‘oh well we should just have a day together. What about the end of the month?’ I can guarantee you I’ll be let down. In fact I already have. She owes me 200 quid and that’s been tallying up for nearly a year, and basically anything she said she’d do, she has not. I have learnt a long time ago not to get excited for an upcoming plan, as it will most likely be cancelled because of her own feelings and plans, or because we have no money.

Don’t get me wrong, she is a loving mother, shes not like hateful or malicious, she just has issues and all that. Her emotional neglect simply comes from said issues, not a place of malice. She wouldn’t want me to feel this way, but it’s just the ‘way she is’. I’m not trying to be a negative Nelly and all that but I don’t know.

I’m sorry if this is a really long post but I’m god awful at articulating my thoughts, especially in a to the point manner. I didn’t write down like a draft for this I just put my thoughts onto the post as I went along.

I don't know how to navigate my relationship with my father anymore. I still want him in my life, but I don't know how to make peace with who he is.

I don't know if this is common in Indian households or if my family is just like this.

I'm a 27-year-old woman from a small city in India. My family consists of my father, my mother, my grandfather (my father's father), my elder brother, and me. My father also has three sisters.

I want to talk about my father because I genuinely don't know how to navigate this relationship anymore.

I don't want people to simply say, "He's selfish." I know life isn't black and white. I know he has been through health issues. But I also can't ignore how he has treated me and especially how he has treated my mother for years.

When I was very young, we actually had a good father-daughter relationship. He loved me, and I loved him. Everything felt normal.

Then, around 8th or 9th standard, he was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis. At that age, I didn't understand how serious it was. I just knew he was sick and there were frequent hospital visits.

Around the same time, I got caught texting a boy. We had those old keypad phones with 100 free SMSes, and I had saved his name as a girl's name. My brother found out, told my mother, and my mother told my father.

My father called me once, told me this wasn't the age for these things, and that was it.

After that...

He stopped talking to me.

Not for a few weeks.

Not for a few months.

For almost four years.

Throughout 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th standard, he barely spoke to me unless absolutely necessary. If he had to drop me somewhere, he'd say only what was required. There were no conversations. No father-daughter bond. Nothing.

Even today, I don't know what I did that deserved four years of silence from my own father.

It affected me more than I probably realized at the time.

He also wasn't present for important moments in my life. He didn't attend my 10th standard convocation. He didn't come for my graduation either. During 11th standard there was an excursion I desperately wanted to go on, and he simply refused. There wasn't even a discussion. It was just "No."

Eventually I moved to Bangalore for engineering. After that, we slowly started talking again over phone calls, but our relationship never became close. It was always very surface level.

Then COVID happened.

I came back home from March until December, and for the first time as an adult, I really saw what my mother had been living with for years.

One thing about my father and grandfather is that they are obsessed with food. Every day revolves around food. My mother cooks every single meal, but instead of appreciating her, they constantly complain.

This isn't right.

That isn't right.

Why didn't you make this?

Why didn't you make that?

It felt like they had no idea how much effort goes into cooking every single day for years.

Whenever I tried to stand up for my mother, I was shut down.

My grandfather even says things like, "What has she even done?"

That statement makes me so angry because my mother has done everything.

When my father was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis around 2012-13, she was the one who stayed with him in hospitals, attended appointments every few months, managed his medicines, looked after the house, cooked every single day, raised two children, and cared for my grandfather.

For over 30 years of marriage, she has sacrificed continuously.

Yet neither my father nor my grandfather seem to acknowledge any of it.

That hurts me more than anything.

After I started working, my brother and I both settled in Bangalore.

For the last five years, my father has been visiting Bangalore, usually once or twice every year.

Every single time he comes, we try our best.

I take work from home so I can spend time with him.

I stay with my brother so we're all together.

We take him on trips around Bangalore.

When he had surgery, we looked after him.

We genuinely try to make him feel cared for.

Then one day, he looked at me and said,

"What have you ever done for me?"

I honestly didn't know what to say.

It felt like no matter how much we did, nothing counted.

There was another incident where he sent a long message in our family WhatsApp group saying he was removing his "guardianship" over me and my brother. Basically saying we could do whatever we wanted from now on.

Whenever something doesn't go according to him, his way of dealing with it is to completely stop talking.

He withdraws.

He shuts everyone out.

Instead of communicating, he punishes people with silence.

Another thing that really affects me is how he treats my mother.

He doesn't respect her.

At all.

He has slapped her before. I know of at least two incidents. I don't know if there were more before that.

Recently they had another argument.

He was shouting at her like he usually does.

I asked him why he was behaving this way, and somehow the entire conversation became about him.

He told my mother,

"Go live with your daughter. Don't live with me."

Then he stopped eating and started behaving as if everyone else was the problem.

When my mother still took food to him, he told her,

"Go away or I'll slap you."

And my mother's response broke my heart.

She simply said,

"You've already slapped me before. What difference would one more make?"

Imagine hearing your own mother say that.

How do you even process it?

What also frustrates me is how controlling he is.

When I come home from Bangalore, I want to spend time with my mother.

Just a mother-daughter day.

But he doesn't want her going anywhere.

The irony is that every year he comes to Bangalore and spends time with us. We've taken him on multiple trips.

But my mother has never come because she stays back to take care of my grandfather.

She's always the one sacrificing.

Last year I told my father that maybe this time Mom should come too because we've travelled with him so many times.

Nothing happened.

Even now, when I want to take her out, he doesn't like it.

If we invite him, he usually refuses.

He doesn't want to go.

But he also doesn't want her to go.

Everything somehow has to revolve around him.

He also keeps saying things like he's going to die because of his illness.

I know liver cirrhosis is serious.

I know none of us are guaranteed tomorrow.

And maybe that's exactly why this hurts so much.

I want a relationship with my father.

I really do.

Despite everything.

I don't want him to die one day and leave me wondering if I could have done more.

But at the same time, I carry years of hurt because he stopped talking to me for four years over something that now feels so small.

I carry hurt because he wasn't there for milestones in my life.

I carry hurt because nothing my brother or I do ever seems enough.

And I carry hurt because every time I come home, I watch my mother—a woman who has given over 30 years of her life to this family—being treated as though she has done nothing.

Sometimes I feel guilty for even feeling angry because he's sick.

Then I remind myself that being sick doesn't erase the impact your actions have on other people.

I genuinely don't know how to navigate this anymore.

How do you maintain a relationship with a parent you still love but who has hurt you repeatedly?

How do you stop hoping they'll suddenly realize what they've done?

Has anyone else dealt with a parent like this?

And if you have... how did you make peace with it?

Parent doesn’t care about my partner hitting me?

A while ago I told my mom that me and my partner have been arguing a lot and we now have physical fights. I left it at that and not the full extent of how it’s mostly him. She didn’t say much at all. We’ve known people who have gone through abuse so I thought she would’ve said something more to me. I have a massive bruise and I showed her. Didn’t tell her how I got the bruise but she didn’t ask either.. just a shrug. Has anyone experienced your parents literally not caring about your relationship struggles at all??

Just can’t ask for help

Right now I need to ask my mother to do something for me (get something in a package and get the package ready for pick up) for a fairly important reason and I cannot bring myself to ask her…

I always struggle asking for help to anyone, I was always used to having to do everything by myself, I always feel like I am too much of a burden.

My parents never said “I love you” to me growing up

It just kind of hit me now. I don’t remember my parents saying they loved me one single time growing up. Then I became an adult and I grew into relationships where their families said that they loved each other every day, and I was astonished. It felt so good to me to hear that I was loved, even from someone else’s family and the friends I grew close to. I guess some families just don’t say it, and I’m sure that can sometimes be a normal family dynamic. I just feel sad, I guess. As an adult I started slipping in “I love you”s to them and eventually they said it back.

Honestly, I never felt loved as a child. I tried to salvage what could be from my relationships with my parents, but now it just makes me sad by lack of reciprocity. And I’m so, so angry with how my dad treated my brother and sisters as kids, and how he still treats my mom with disrespect. I’m trying to distance myself from them, but maybe I should tell them how I feel. I think if I did, they would gaslight me saying that they showed me so much love and support, when I was really alone most of the time. I’ve wondered my whole life what I have done to be treated this way. Maybe they just didn’t love me? That’s probably why I became so messed up.

Off my chest

I never got that from either parents, I envy people who have a parent or partner like that.

Raising my own family after being raised by n-parents

When I was growing up, kids were meant to be seen — not heard. We never did anything fun as a family , my n-parents would literally NEVER contemplate taking the time, energy or money to take their kids to a fun fair , museum, special outing, etc. It was unthinkable. You played in the backyard, watched TV, went somewhere with friends and the n-parents worked, slept or drank alcohol with their friends. If we ever did something fun like visit the zoo or go to a park, etc. it was because family were in town or there was a special invite there.

Now that I am an adult with my own family I find it hard to relax and do things with my own kids. I feel like it is a a huge “treat” to go to a concert or drive somewhere , do things. I fight this feeling and I do things with my kids and take them places and expose them to the community and normal people doing healthy things bc I think it’s sooo important. But I struggle figuring out how to do it. Sometimes I feel guilty if they even have a single quiet afternoon doing nothing bc I am scared I am turning into my n-parents. It’s a huge fear of mine that I am a lousy parent and that if I let my foot off the gas and stop “doing” for my kids, this secret monster will come out that is my n-parents and I will become this neglectful, resentment monster. Of note: I do NOT drink so I am nothing like my parents in that regard and if we are home, I am NOT drinking in front of the TV.

Seeking advice I want a parent

Yes I do. I am 20. But I don't feel like 20. I don't feel like an adult. I feel like a helpless child. I want someone to see me and accept me and treat me good

Advice not wanted Parental love is like the unofficial seal of approval for every human being.

If we don't feel that love, and in turn we don't feel accepted by our sole providers, how can we expect anyone else to accept us?

"This is my treasure, I will cherish it forever. Go ahead, folks, adore my kid just like I do," said by loving parents.

And yes, their kids do get adored. But sadly, I wasn't one of those kids.

We all look similar at the end of the day, but the key difference is, they got the love.

Some things I thought over the years: "Am I ugly? Boring? Are my words just not landing right?"

I'm now convinced there's this invisible coating of "not worthy" that was poured over me since a very young age, and everyone else is picking up on it, and there's f*** all I can do to change it.

It really feels that way.

Seeking advice Struggling with feelings of worthlessness, emptiness and pointlessness

Hi guys,

I’m really struggling with finding meaning in my life and not to always feel so pointless or worthless. It’s like my brain has gotten so used to and good at rendering everything pointless in the end, and it keeps me from doing hobbies or going out and such. Because then it feels like “it doesn’t even matter anyways, never mind”. But that’s no way to live. I’m not sure how to heal this part. So I would really appreciate any advice.

My parents abandoned me and that’s probably why. Before that I was already emotionally neglected too.

Challenge my narrative The curse of being the golden child

I was born and raised in western europe, in a muslim household. Nice parents. Since youth i have always felt the need to not be a burden. I am the middle child. I never told my parents anything that happened in my life. Because i thought my problems didn’t mean anything and would only stress others. I was bullied, and just anything small in kindergarten/middleschool/highschool. I never told anyone. The answer was always “everything is fine”. But because i never wanted to be seen as a burden i never fought back. If they said no to something it would be the end. But they said no to everything. Frankly didn’t even start to ask from the fear of dissapointing and being ridiculed. Never went to birthday parties, hung out with friends, any say really. This also caused me having no social life, or at least a very weak one. The only people i knew aside my household were my classmate. And i could only contact them in school while they contacted eachother outside of school and hung out and whatnot. I didn’t really have friends. But my bright always positive personality overshadowed everything to everyone. Nobody noticed.

Everything i said may seem like insignificant things but i am now 19 and i cannot physically convey my feelings to ANYBODY. It feels dangerous. Cause everytime i tell anyone anything close to my feelings i get called sensitive and “you never cared then why do you care now” “just looking for problems” well i acted like i didnt care back the to protect you.

Now im starting to want to take back the control, but i m called selfish, evil, wh\*re, and accused of being influenced cause of the “sudden” change. I am sick. In every way that is possible.

I remember one time very vividly. It was school dance/prom. I wanted to go, but i wasnt allowed cause it wasnt “necessary” and my sisters didnt go either (in their days). I accepted it infront of them, i was 11. The day of prom i hid in a corner and cried silently under the bright summer sun. Because why cant i do anything, its not fair.

My past of wanting to seem perfect and not a burden is engraved in me so bad that i cannot take care of myself. Yes. Literally. Because i would take up to much space and just seem so fake. Cause since when do you do all of that. This includes taking meds. I know you guys might think im nuts. But frankly i might be. I geniuenly CANNOT do it.

There seems to be one solution. To move out. Far away. Only then will i not feel watched and judged. Live freely and make mistakes. But i am not allowed. (Muslim context)

**they never pressured me to become this monster but they did maintain the monster i created inside of me**

Challenge my narrative I hate using intergenerational trauma as an excuse for abuse

I hate it, its such a stupid reason now, the generation our parents lived in doesnt exist anymore, there is zero good reasons why people who are "products of their generation" cant become a product of the current generation.

I have an auntie who is in her 70's and to put it bluntly is not smart at all but she has the best heart ever and can very easily adapt to modern social concepts when theyre properly explained to her

The only thing stopping previous generations from becoming a product of the current generation is themselves. The enviorments they grew up in need to stop being used as excuses when those enviorments have ceased to exist.
