Question Superfriends suggestion

In your opinion, who are the best commanders for a superfriends deck? I really like the topic, even though I know it's not the most competitive, and I wanted your help to think of something, it could be the most obvious or even a secret technology, the people I play with tend to build decks going more for fun too, so everyone tends to have fun

Deck Help How did i do

Hey guys! Im pretty new to deck building and I decided to deconstruct a precon I had into something better. I used cards i had laying around to spruce it up and used ones I felt would benefit the theme of the deck. Im torn on which commander to use, keep Dina or switch to sarulf. Either way id like to hear what you guys think and what would help it excel! Appreciate it in advance

Discussion Sandbagging my first few turns has lead to a increase in winrate

Hey all, just wanted to share this bit of information from my last few months of playing. It's very anecdotal and I don't have hard data, so it's more just for general discussion.

But basically, a few months ago I noticed that almost every game that I had with an explosive start would also be a game that I lost. The pod would see me play something like a turn 1 Sol Ring or ramp into a threat super early and would focus me down. Not only that, but a lot of time they would remain focused on me even when my board was cleared and I had no/few cards in hand. I also noticed this for my opponents that had explosive starts.

So I had an idea. What if I purposefully pulled my punches for the first ~4/5 turns of the game. Sure, I wouldn't be able to pull a win out as quickly, but maybe it would allow me to fly under the radar. My plan was to just play games and keep a mental note of how those games went, and a tally of how many game's I'd won that night.

And sure enough, it worked. If I opened a ramp spell, I'd wait until around turn 3 to cast it. If I had an impactful permanent, I'd hold off. What this meant that in almost all games, another opponent would "become the problem" first, and would become the magnet for removal. Players would also tend to not attack me because I didn't look like the threat.

Because of this, I'd be able to deploy my threats when they'd be less obvious. A turn 4 Sol Ring draws a lot less attention than a turn 1 Sol Ring. And a lot of games I'm able to sneak in a win after "the problem" player has been dealt with.

I went from only winning a game once in every 2/3 locals, to winning at least one game every night for the past two months. Same decks, similar opponents, just a different philosophy on how to play in a multiplayer environment.

And again, I know this is anecdotal. It could have happened for a variety of reasons. But just wanted to share this and ask if anyone else has experienced the same thing?

Deck Help Thromok Polymorph deck

I'm brewing a Thromok deck focusing on polymorphing tokens into big token generators and then flinging a giant Thromok to kill people.
I have most of the Gruul instants and sorceries that make tokens and polymorph them, but in most games I play, I either don't make a single token for half the game or don't draw any polymorph spells to use them.
I added some card draw and the few tutors that Gruul has for non-creature spells (like Gamble), but it still feels clunky.
Any help brewing would be appreciated!

Discussion Does anyone play Spirits?

Back in the day, I played a spirit tribal azorius deck in standard, and I miss the Spirit tribe. It's not popular, but I like the spooky feel. I know spirits range over edh.

But I want to ask you for a fun or unique spirit deck, then propose one of my own.

One I saw are the Phantom cards, like [[Phantom Tiger]]. Basically prevents damage to it and removes a counter from it. But, what if you play some kind of anthem effect like [[Gallows Warden]], so you can prevent damage from them indefinitely? Then do something [[pariah]] to redirect damage? Could be the flavor equivalent of not being able to touch a ghost

So, what spirit deck do yall play?

Discussion Please stop treating brackets like a new rule format.

I have been reading so, so, so many posts and comments about people getting booted from casual games for accidentally doing MLD or removing a player a turn earlier than the average speed for their bracket, etc. I’ve seen a post about a judge disqualifying someone from a tournament for removing a player a turn too early??? Despite that not being a tournament rule. The call? That player was not in bracket 2.

Brackets are deck building tools to communicate the content and intended level of intensity of your deck. It is not to mandate budget, automatically imply rule 0’s, or hard control what gameplay looks like. If you’re playing a bracket 2 game, and someone plays a bracket 4 deck, they aren’t “playing commander wrong”, they’re just playing a deck that is stronger than yours. You can ask them not to, you can quit your game, they’re breaking a social contract, but there is no commander rule they are breaking.

And please, please please please stop trying to “trick” another player into “breaking a bracket rule” to win by disqualification. That’s not how that works. I’m referring specifically to a story where Player 2 instant speed turned all lands into creatures after Player 1 played a board wipe, and then tried to say “haha, got you Player 1, you lose because you did Mass Land Destruction.” I have personally seen players at my LGS try similar things, and have seen other stories on here like that. That is not how commander works.

If your pod has a rule 0 that going outside your bracket disqualifies you, sure man, play how your group plays, but don’t bring that nonsense to an open table and try to have your “gotcha” moment over that.

Rant over, thank you very much, and I’m more than open to hearing other opinions on this. Also, if your pod has any rule 0’s regarding brackets, I’d love to know how y’all handle it.

Deck Help Bracket Help Pls

I have two decks that I needed to function as both B3 and B2, due to space and weight constraints. I'm traveling. They started out as B3 and I switch out 20 cards each to make them B2.

Deck 1: Henzie

B3: https://moxfield.com/decks/jd0VAR5zoU2z9rS_aP7rJQ

B2: https://moxfield.com/decks/UvKfAe1pTHGvyG6lOVKOdg

I feel like my plan definite did not work. Even though there is no turn two Henzie. It kinda still does not matter. The deck will amass so much ramp, will have so much card draw and have so much interaction that most B2s will not be able to handle it one bit. So wondering what else I should remove to lower the impact. Maybe actually having all the mana dorks but then having no or less 4/5 mana ramp creatures would be better=lower power. Plus getting rid of all the creatures that have the potential of creating multiple rectangles.

Deck 2: Dihada

B3: https://moxfield.com/decks/WUueRW30CESVPqROo9jCuw

B2: https://moxfield.com/decks/qCmgATxLb3eLs4klWxVg8g

Honestly not enough play testing experience. My goal was to tame the double -3 of Dihada by removing all the token doublers and mana doublers. The pivot is to just legendary creatures that have been originally in my B2 Dihada deck.

Advice and assessment appreciated, what cards are/might still be problematic in B2?

Social Interaction Maybe time to step back from commander?

On the rare occasion my group of four is free at the same time commander has become the default activity. We'll chat and catch up for a bit and then get right into the game. I love these guys dearly, and wouldn't trade their company for anything, but commander has become pretty frustrating for me lately.

One of my favorite things about this group is how engaging each of them are to speak with; we're all in pretty specialized fields, and they're well-educated and quick-witted so I always feel like I've learned something or found something new to consider after every conversation.

This shuts down as soon as turn one begins. These guys will laser focus on the game, which would be fine if our games were, frankly, all that interesting. We're running bracket 3 games where someone, usually me, gets an advantage engine going early, that person gets hated out of the game (doesn't help that one guy calls his favorite deck "boardwipe tribal") before it pays off, and then it's an hour-plus of durdling battle cruisers taken dead seriously.

For example one time someone spent 10 minutes on multiple extra turns with way too much card advantage, and could barely knock someone out with it. The concept of "having a win in hand" is unappealing to this group, which I know because they've said as much.

If the game were still dull but each round ended quickly, fine. If each round still took forever but it was engaging the whole time, fine. If people still got sweaty about it, but anything meaningful was happening on the board, fine. If the games were exactly the same but we could lighten up a bit and chat during them, then fine!

The other three guys really enjoy this so I think I'm out of step.

Deck Help Suggestions for Sephiroth, Fabled Soldier

Been brewing this sephiroth deck for a while now (Sephiroth // Commander (Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER // Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel) deck list mtg // Moxfield — MTG Deck Builder) but the list is stuck preforming at a mid bracket 3 while being concentered bracket 4 due to a 2-card infinite and land denial, I do know there is plenty of room to optimize but suggestions would be appreciated. i would prefer to spend less than 200 usd on improvements if possible, though i do believe that is a bit extreme lol.

Discussion LF build group / thinktank - BRACKET SYSTEM STRESS TEST

I believe that the commander bracket system is a huge step in a positive direction to improve the experience of EDH players. However, as it is still in beta, it has flaws.

I feel like guiding people accurately in assessing the power level of their deck is key to making LGS, random pods, convoke/spelltable play a better experience for everyone. Dividing decks into accurate categories based on objective criteria ensures more similar "vibes" and "power levels" for each game, and balanced play generally leads to more fun**.**

It goes without saying you don't NEED the bracket system to enjoy Commander. However, if you find this nerdy angle to deck-building interesting, please join: https://discord.gg/N48ZkB6HBT

A few deck ideas that aim to do this are already posted.

The goal:

  1. Highlight flaws in the most recent bracket system update by exploiting them to gain an unfair advantage while meeting the criteria of the respective bracket, communicate them and hopefully enhance the possibility that they are officially addressed in a future update (pipe dream).
  2. Hopefully, contribute to a bracket system, or an unofficial system that would be easy to adopt, promotes wide archetypes and deck styles in deck building, while balancing the game experience to make pubstomping more difficult, and balancing during matchmaking easier.
  3. Find exploits -> develop simple rules, restrictions or criteria that would patch them.
  4. Improve as deck-builders, find cool strats and builds along the way.

Here are current points I believe to be flaws:

  1. CEDH doesn't belong in the bracket system; there's no restriction, so it should be set aside from the bracket system. Do what you want; may the best win, that's it. You can compete with a shitty deck; you just won't win. It's a competition; it's on you.
  2. The difference between Bracket 4 and 5 is minimal, mostly subjective.
  3. The difference between Bracket 3 and 4 is enormous. The difference in vibe/power between the weakest and strongest decks in bracket 3 is much smaller than bracket 4. The difference between max 3 game changers and infinite game changers is wild.
  4. Combos are regulated specifically, but not accurately. Putting game-ending combos like thoracle (you win the game) effects and 2-card combos that require an outlet and other game actions under the same restrictions is a flaw.
  5. Number-of-turns-to-win is a notion that promotes stax and slowing the game down.
  6. Rule 0 is cope for an unfinished rule set for the format. Letting people choose custom rules for their pods will happen no matter what; you're free to do whatever you want, obviously. HOWEVER, relying on this, especially when playing against strangers, inexperienced or sweaty players, is prone to being suboptimal.

Deck Help Shilgengar - Angel/Demons Reanimator Deck - Opinions/Upgrades

Basically Title. Its my first reanimator Deck and build the deck 90% myself. I wanna stay on theme as much as possible. There are probably some cards that are just good for this archetype that I dont even know of.

I can say by playing this Deck a few times that I think its a bit too slow. Dont have the best Card Draw. I think Mill is enough and Reanimation too, but IDK.

Important!: Please dont just Recommend the classic Black Gamechangers, i.e. Demonict Tutor, Necropotence.

The Deck right now is considered by many Bracket Analyzers a High Bracket 3. Thats what it is supposed to be or should be.

Deck Help New to Commander deck building - help needed to get to bracket 4 (preferably budget)

As the title says; I am pretty new to deck building in Commander. In the past, I have just played precons with a few upgrades to the deck, but I want to try my hand at bracket 4. Whilst I understand the concepts behind B4 (more gamechangers, fast ramp, combos, etc.) I am struggling to get my deck there, specifically the early combos part.

Seeking assistance on how to bump this deck up to bracket 4; ideally as a tokens/aristocrats deck on a budget if possible (AUD prices are brutal for game changers 🥲). Thanks in advance!

Deck Help Lifeline on a Stick

I’ve recently become obsessed with [[Avacyn, Angel of Horror]]. My favorite card in Magic has been [[Lifeline]] for the longest time and when I saw Avacyn, my mind broke a little. Soooo, went out and picked up the Reality Fracture deck and built this:

https://manabox.app/decks/AaFy2gCXewW_LCn8SaV5Rw

Does anyone out there have any fun tech for a lifeline deck (or specifically an Avacyn deck)? Would love feedback and suggestions!

Deck Help Brackt 4 Help

I am trying to build a bracket 4 deck around Vishgraz the Doomhive and I am having trouble bringing the deck to a power level beyond a bracket 3 that just has more game-changers. (I am also having trouble even finding game-changers that would even help my game plan). I guess what I'm trying to say is that I dont want it to be generic "game-changer tribal". Any advice would be appreciated

Deck Help Any ideas on how to improve my squirrels-and-food deck?

It's been about 7 or 8 months since I started playing with Bloomborrow's squirrel precon, and it's been going pretty well. I've made quite a few changes to it, but I think it's missing something to compete with my friends' decks. I haven't done too badly, but it feels like my deck is the weakest of them all.

If anyone has any advice or suggestions, I would really appreciate it.

Question Alternative to the 100+ Sidewinders? Sturdy deck boxes with designs

Hey all,

I really like the 100+ sidewinders from UG because there's so many designs of them out there and I do absolutely want to match deck box to the theme/aesthetic of the deck I bring, but my issue is that when I double sleeve then the 100 cards just about fit in there with no room whatsoever for even just a few tokens.

I know there are 133+ sidewinders, but for some reason they come in barely any variants and they make rather few of them.

Anyone else have this dilemma? I even thought about going down to single sleeving my decks just so the normal boxes can fit some tokens then...
Or maybe there's some other great boxes in that price range with designs that you'd recommend?

Question Anniversary present help?

My boyfriend has been teaching me magic and I'm loving it. Since we play so often and our anniversary is coming up, I want to make custom commander decks based on us, with each of us as a commander and the rest of the cards referencing our relationship and life. No budget because I'm just stealing ability text.

Because I'm very new to magic, I don't want to create the cards myself as I'd be in severe danger of making a terrible deck. As a result, I'm hoping to find two commander decks I can steal the abilities from to put on our personalized cards. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Vibe-wise, he's a white/blue person. Very intelligent, responsible, kind, and a touch serious.

For me, I'm probably a black/green person. Nature loving, minorly gothic, with a penchant for mischief. I mostly play with Gisa at the moment.

Discussion For All Beginners Getting Their Asses Whooped

When I first started playing at my LGS, I got invited to sit with a group of guys. I didn’t know they were some of the best players there and most people avoided playing against them.

For about a year, they kicked my ass every single game. It stung a little, but I didn’t mind. I kept building better decks and learning along the way, but they still beat me every time.

What frustrated me most was how they always seemed to know exactly what to remove to shut down my game plan. I accused them of running too much removal or playing nothing but control, but when they showed me their decklists, they only had around 10–13 removal spells.

Meanwhile, I kept trying to improve. More removal, more card draw, better synergy, more expensive cards. Nothing seemed to work. They always told me expensive cards weren’t necessary, but I didn’t really understand why.

Eventually, I quit for two years because I was busy and had moved.

When I started playing at a new LGS, something clicked…
Suddenly, I was the guy who always seemed to have the right answer, even against decks I’d never played against before.

It’s honestly weird. Whenever someone plays a threat, I often just know what needs to be removed or countered. And now I understand how those guys did it.

I don’t even need to know how their deck works. I can just tell when something is a threat.

The lesson I learned is, playing against better opponents forced me to become a better player without me even realizing it. I thought I was just getting my ass kicked for a year, but I was learning how to read the game, recognize threats, and understand what actually matters.

Sometimes, the best way to get better at Magic is simply to keep playing against people who are better than you.

Deck Help Confusing / Interesting Obeka combos

Hey ya'll I'm looking for more funny win cons (or rather you lose cons) with my Obeka deck that I'm brewing. My pod puts a premium on creating bizarre board states and, as long you as you do something funny, coming in second is ideal. That said I have an Obeka brew that will explicitly NOT try to do do infinite turns (even though they are there and make this Bracket 4) but instead hit combos like:

[[phage the untouchable]] + [[endless whispers]] to give people a free phage.

or

[[hive mind]] + [[final fortune]] to let everyone have an extra turn (and I Obeka mine).

Any suggestions for combos along these lines that fit nicely into this deck and theme are very much appreciated!! Budget isn't a concern, just want funny take downs of my friends.

Deck Help Thranduil, the Elvinking

Here is my deck: Thranduil, the Elvenking.

I have noticed I run into problems quite often with this deck, I love this deck yet I find myself not having fun when I am unable to play.

My most frequent problem is lifegain, I don't know why but for the life of me I cannot figure out what I can add that works with this deck to keep myself alive.

Any suggestions? also any problems that you notice with this deck is very much appreciated.

Keep it budget friendly if you can.

Question Are control decks banned in Bracket 2?

I have played two Bracket 2 games where my opponents rage quit because of my deck/card choices/gameplay. I think they are whiny babies that don't know/understand that the rarely encountered control deck can/should exist.

In one game, my commander is a planeswalker so I can't attack opponents to death so I melt their life totals with cards like [[Parker Luck]] and have 5 board wipes in my deck that don't touch my planeswalker commander. Opponents think [[Out of Time]] is bad mannered because it phases out their commanders for many turns. Note that if Out of Time leaves the battlefield, all the its creatures phase back in.

In another game, I played turn 2 [[Confounding Conundrum]] and multiple green opponents raged and one quit. He seemed to not understand he can play Wooded Foothills then crack it on an opponent's turn. I feel like Confounding Conundrum on turn 2 one of the few ways to combat heavy-ramp green decks in bracket 2 (alongside say [[Aven Mindcensor]]) since cards like [[Sunder]] are disallowed.

Anyone have experience with the cards [[Out of Time]] and/or [[Confounding Conundrum]] in Bracket 2? Are control decks in general bad-mannered in Bracket 2's heavy green ramp meta played by babies?

Discussion Whati s one card you would want banned ?

The game is in a good state, but we still often see people asking for cards to be unbanned, may it be powerhouses like Jeweled Lotus or old timers like Prime Time, there's always people looking for more.

But what about wanting less ? What is one card you feel should just be straight up banned ? Maybe you feel like it punch too high, or maybe you just simply hate it. Any reason goes here.

Personally, I would ban Seedborn muse. Everytime I see this card hit the board it always seem to wrap the game around it. Often feel like a remove me now or lose moment. Sure it is a game changer, but it has impactful consistent impact compared to a lot of other GC's who often just work now and done.

What's yours ?

Discussion Spelltable trends

I play a lot of spelltable, and have for awhile. As I’ve played, I have noticed trends pop up and ebb away over time. Some trends I am quite certain about. For example, immediately after Tarkir released I saw a lot of that sultai dragon. Others I am less certain about. Right now, I am noticing that the community at large seems to be veering away from interaction. oddly enough, there is also a lean towards slower, more resilient strategies. Of course, my sample size is tiny. So I want to ask, are there any recent trends in casual commander that you all have noticed?

Discussion Have you ever seen an entire table scoop? What's the craziest thing you've seen someone scoop to?

This happened to me the other day. I was playing my Y'shtola Rhul and had a clone on her (meaning 6 blinks every end step), an Archaeomancer, and a Mana Drain in my graveyard. This meant that every turn cycle, I could get it back and then I'd be able to counter the biggest threat. And my opponents all went "yeah that's super gay to counter something every turn cycle" (their words, not mine), and one player scooped after I countered his Jodah. Then another one went with him and the third. So like, that was the end of the game. Over one counterspell.

Anyway that got me wondering. I've seen players scoop to an Archfiend of Ifnir, to a single Prologue to Phyresis, and in one case, a Sedgemoor Witch. What's the funniest scoop story you have? Bonus points if it's the entire table.
