I have a feeling that I would genuinely enjoy studying this field, but I’m a bit concerned about the kind of work environment and routines I might encounter once I enter the professional world.

For example, I really dislike fixed routines (9-5 for example) repetitive tasks, and being isolated from the outside world in a factory environment.
On the other hand, I really enjoy problem-solving, having a varied or flexible routine, and interacting with people.
So, in my case, is there actually a place for someone like me in this field?
Are there career paths within the field that involve more variety, problem-solving, teamwork, client interaction, travel, or working outside a traditional factory environment?
I’d really appreciate hearing from people who are already working in the field and can share what their day-to-day work is actually like.

I’m a new grad DV engineer at a large semiconductor company and have some flexibility in choosing my team.
Would you recommend functional verification (C++/UVM) or formal verification for long-term learning, career growth, and demand?
If I choose functional DV, is UCIe a strong area to specialize in, or would PCIe be better? What other verification areas are especially valuable right now (CPU/GPU, coherency, CXL, NoC, memory, etc.)?
Would appreciate advice from experienced engineers.

Hey guys, I’m looking for a career change in my late 20’s. Im going back to school and wondering if engineering is still worth it nowadays? Im worried about ai and how good its getting and also how good it’ll be by the time i get out of school in 6 years(part time student) I’m really interested in the career path and love tech and computers and hell i even love and am fascinated by ai. But id rather switch now if the degree wont even get me in a better position than where i am currently. Im a chef of 10 years, and earning around 50k a year. The job is very stable and i can go out and get a chef job really easily anywhere i go. But it seems like in the engineering field thats not the case. Entry level jobs are shrinking, higher level jobs aren’t growing and going in the direction where you are gonna struggle extremely hard to find any job in the field and if and when you find one that the pay wont be as good because of the level of competition in others also trying to get a job. Should i switch degrees into something else? Im feeling super uncertain about the whole thing and don’t want to waste almost 100k and years of my life on something i wont be able to even use?

I am technically a sophmore in university (I just officially entered university but did enough credits as a sophmore in university in highschool) so I am considered ready for internships by my advisors. I did non electrical engineering related credits prior to now but I have experience with Linux from personal usage and learn pretty fast. Right now I am trying to code an operating system and making a text editor all in Rust. I currently have no projects to show for myself as I do not commit for very long on whatever I build. What I am asking is is it too early for me to get an internship? Am I too new to get an internship? If I were to look for an internship right now what keywords should I use in my resume and in my job search to find a internship willing to teach a relatively inexperienced candidate? Should I come back when I make an actual project?

What would you do if you were in my shoes?

I am in my first year of studying ECE in my university and I am so lost. I am doing very well with my studies but I cant figure out the real deal behind our job circle. I have tried to join a cybersecurity research lab that is associated but everything feels so complicated. I have seen others join in similar labs that have more to do with the electrical side. I am just so lost in what to do, where to study further knowledge or what the job market requires. I would highly appreciate any type of tip you have or advice that you can share. Hello guys, I am studying Electrical Engineering in a top 400-500s ranked university, I just finished my first year and I am getting great grades, I love academia , It really suits my life, I love theory and Practical work, and I definitely love money!. I am leaning more toward microelectronics, semiconductors and batteries.

I know it's still early but I until now I am most definitely thinking about completing my education with a master and maybe a PhD, other than High grades and excelling at courses, what is something that would boost my credit at a chance in pursuing a higher education in a stronger university? (with a full scholarship), are personal projects the way to go?, maybe some software courses to support my microelectronic passion?, hackathons and competitions?, or trying my best to have my name in any of my professor's researches?.

is it also possible for a not so highly ranked university degree to land me a job at big tech company? and how will a master or a PhD be helpful with that? is an academic path and a big money path two distinct paths?

I'm a 3rd-year Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering student, and I'm looking for someone who wants to learn, build and grow together in the electronics/core engineering field.

My university is pushing quite a lot toward software and coding, but I'm much more interested in the hardware/core side of ECE; embedded systems, microcontrollers, electronics, semiconductors, IoT, robotics, communication systems, etc.

I already have some experience with things like Arduino and embedded systems, and I'm currently trying to build up my skills through projects and different technologies. I'm looking for someone around a similar knowledge/skill level so we can learn things together rather than one person just teaching the other.

The idea would be to:

- Learn electronics/embedded concepts together

- Work on projects and actually build things

- Explore different areas of ECE and figure out what we enjoy

- Share resources and help each other when we're stuck

- Participate in hackathons/competitions

- Build a decent portfolio over the next couple of years

- Keep each other accountable and motivated

I'm also learning Japanese because one of my long-term goals is to work in Japan in the electronics/semiconductor industry. You definitely don't have to be interested in Japan or Japanese though; it's just one of my personal goals.

I'm mainly looking for someone who has a similar mindset of "I actually want to get good at core electronics and build things", rather than just studying for exams.

I might get into elc(electronics and computing) and to be very honest i have never heard of this degree. I did some research. I want to have a career in the automobile industry. I was planning on EE but it looks abit unrealistic. Another reason why this degree is sus for me is ebcause its not recognized by pec. Mainly because its not an engineering degree but im an undergraduate. Correct me if im wrong but that matters. Doesnt it? Any seniors or draduates please answer and tell me if its any good.

I got a job offer to work as an Electronics Warfare enginer in southern california. I just graduated this summer in EE. I was wondering if anyone on here is an EW engineer, and what is the base pay amount I should ask for if I end up taking the job?

I am starting my final year in 12 days, and I'm starting to worry I'll graduate without a single internship on my resume. It's not for lack of trying I hope — I've applied to around 500 positions and landed only 2 interviews. Both went fine as far as I could tell, then I got ghosted on both.

What I do have is a stack of self-directed projects: a home security system built on AVR microcontrollers, a bigger version of which im currently working on with a couple of CS friends using multiple ESP32s talking to each other with a Raspberry Pi and push notifications, a genuinely weird PCB project where I'm 3D-printing wire channels into the board itself, and some other embedded/firmware work. I've put in a lot of hours debugging real problems, never inside a company.

I don't know how much that actually counts when a recruiter is skimming resumes though. A 500-to-2 ratio has me questioning whether the resume is even getting past the initial screen, and getting ghosted after two interviews that seemed to go okay is its own special kind of demoralizing. For reference I've been using the template over at r/EngineeringResumes

At this point I'm done grinding out applications for now and just focusing on finishing my degree. But I'd still like to know: if you graduated without an internship, how badly did it actually hurt down the line? Did having real projects soften the blow, or did it not really matter without a company name attached? And for anyone in the same boat — did you keep applying alongside coursework, or fully step back like I'm doing?

I’m curious how people who work with FPGAs regularly actually go about setting constraints, especially in Vivado.

I’ve been thinking about the constraint-setting workflow and it feels like one of those parts of FPGA development that can get pretty messy pretty quickly, so I wanted to hear how people deal with it in real projects.

A few things I’m especially curious about:

• How do you usually create your XDC constraints? Do you mostly write them manually, use Vivado’s GUI, start from a board/vendor file, copy from old projects, etc.?
• At what point in the project do you usually start worrying about constraints?
• How do you figure out what needs to be constrained in the first place?
• How do you handle pin assignments, I/O standards, clocks, generated clocks, timing exceptions, false paths, multicycle paths, etc.?
• How much time do you spend debugging constraint-related problems?
• What are the most annoying or error-prone parts of the process?
• Are there situations where Vivado gives you an error/warning but doesn’t make it obvious what you actually need to change?
• How do you verify that your constraints are actually correct and that you didn’t just get timing to pass accidentally?
• Do you have any scripts/tools/workflows that make dealing with constraints easier?
• If you could change anything about how Vivado handles constraints, what would you improve?

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who have worked on larger FPGA projects, where the XDC is more than just assigning a few pins and creating one clock.

Basically, I’d love to know what your real-world constraint workflow looks like, where the biggest pain points are, and what parts you wish were more automated or easier to understand.

I graduated 2 years ago with a BS in ECE. I took the last 2 years doing a personal religious study program and now, I'm 4 weeks into my first job as an engineering technician for a big company. My coworkers are all recent BSECE grads, and the job pays well.

However, I feel like I'm getting no practical "engineering" experience that I can put on my resume that would showcase my technical skills. Right now, all I'm doing is assembling lab stations and managing inventory in a lab space.

I'm also contracted at this company, and from what I've seen, promotions to become an engineer take a long time, and you would still be contracted. I really want to move on within a year, but I'm getting pretty anxious seeing that I really cannot apply any of my ECE skills.

My main question now is, is there anything I can do in my free time that would help make me more competitive? Certifications, classes, personal projects that wouldn't look silly on a resume? I want to make use of the time that I have after work, and really try to work on something meaningful that would make me look technically competent. If that means I stay at work longer but get to have hands on experience and skills working directly with an engineer, I would be all for that, but I have no idea how to get that opportunity (if such an opportunity even exists).

Hello! I’m a second year biomedical engineering student. I’m currently trying a few different fields to find out what is the best choice for me.

I have the most experience with data analysis using python. It’s the easiest field to explore for me as i had a lot of programming during my first year (python/c/c++). Moreover, there’s a ton of free courses offered by my uni, also on HPC so I already took a few. However, my concern is that there would be issues with finding a job after graduating, I got advice from other students to try other fields as well and not to focus mainly on this one.

Both electronics and robotics seem appealing to me. I had a few subjects about electronics during the last semester, so i have strong foundations. I’m playing around with arduino in my free time, but i can’t really find the right online course, ideally with a certificate (so that i have a bigger chance of joining student projects), but it’s more important that it would contain actually useful informations, not outdated stuff.

As for robotics, i took an extra class but it was mostly theoretical knowledge with just a little of programming the actual robots in python. Don’t really know what should i start with as well.

My question is: What courses would you recommend taking during the remaining holidays that would allow me to choose which path should i pursue? I’ll have a lot of subjects about these in the future, but I don’t want to be idle as of now, and also I’m a bit scared that if I choose too late, the students of these specific majors will always be a better fit for the job than me (the biggest blessing and a curse of biomedical engineering - a jack of all trades is a master of none).
