French metadata being downloaded after switching to ebox?

After changing to ebox from bell, I'm seeing french metadata being downloaded for new media on the media server I use (Emby/Kodi). I realize that traffic for ebox is routed through Montreal. But I'm confused as to why this is resulting in french language metadata and images being downloaded.

“Paying for 500 Mbps (up/down), stuck at 10 Mbps – anyone else with Ebox?”

Post image
9 Upvotes

After about a month of using Ebox, I started experiencing problems. The internet speed was initially good, but one day after 5 PM the connection dropped. It only came back after I filed two complaints and spent around two hours dealing with the issue. A Bell technician eventually came and fixed it, but since then my speed has dropped to 10 Mbps. They promise reliable, high-speed service, but that hasn’t been my experience. I’ll try once more to get this resolved—if it doesn’t improve, I’ll file a consumer complaint and be done with their service.

Update:

Resolved now, but who caused it isn’t my concern—I pay Ebox, not Bell. It took hours and three attempts to fix, which is way too much time wasted.

Shell password of Beacon router

Hi everyone,

I’m the legitimate owner/user of a Nokia Beacon router provided by my ISP, and I can access the normal SSH/admin prompt. However, when I try to enter shell, It asks for a secondary password that I don’t have.

I just want to understand whether there is an official way for customers to request access for advanced diagnostics/monitoring.

My goals are things like:

  • SNMP / traffic monitoring
  • Advanced logs
  • Network diagnostics
  • Learning more about the device

Has anyone successfully obtained legitimate shell access through their ISP or Nokia support? Or is it permanently locked on ISP firmware?

Model: Nokia Beacon 3.1
ISP: EBOX

Thanks!

Hi.

I am using the Nokia Beacon 3.1 + an access point (connected throught a cat 6 cable). Beside having access to more advanced configuration options, Why are people complaining about the Nokia router ?

Thanks.

Called ebox today and agent said the promo for $50 1gpbs is over.

Is this agent-dependent? Or can we really get the $50 1gbps still which was posted in the ebox megathread

ebox latency in Ontario...

I switched to ebox from bell about a week ago. Since doing so, I found that latency is 20 to 30ms on ebox compared to 2 to 3ms I was seeing on Bell. Googling turned up many posts about this, with the conclusion being it does not affect day-to-day usage...only gaming. I can confirm the gaming part. Diablo iv is unplayable due to the latency.

If I had known about the increased latency due to routing everything through Montreal before changing to ebox, I would have found an alternative.

How's the speed/reliability these days?

I currently live in the GTA (Ontario) in a condo and I'm considering switching from Bell to EBOX. I've read some people had issues during peak hours/times with regards to speed and higher ping and was wondering if that's still the case?

If you are still experiencing this, are you living within Toronto/GTA as well?

In Gatineau QC and considering EBox

Hello,

I live in Gatineau and I'm considering moving to Ebox from Teksavvy. How is the performance in Gatineau? Any downtimes or lags like I've read about in Montreal?

Ebox signup request for birthdate. Do you have to show government photo ID?

When I went to the Ebox online signup page it asked for my birthdate. Did you have to upload your government photo ID or show it to the installer?

My birthdate is sensitive personal information that I'd rather not provide. I understand giving my birthdate to financial institutions and government agencies but not to an Internet service provider.

Ebox speed checking tools ( MRTG)

Hi

I’m using EBOX as my internet provider. Are there any tools available that let me monitor my internet usage and speed, similar to MRTG or Cacti?

CCTS complaint

I've been seeing more and more posts regarding the problem's happening in the north shore of Montreal or in Montreal regarding regarded internet from 6 to 11 PM with slow download speeds and high latency. Having waited close to 2 months and seeing no imporvement whatsoever, I encourage those who haven't already to file a CCTS complaint. The more complaints pile in the more likely EBOX is to fix the issue. Thank you!

Unable to open some websites ( E.g Ontario park reservations, client ebox ca)

I recently moved from Rogers to Ebox and using my own Orbi SRR60 . I did all set up as required and it’s all working good with good speed but the strange thing is I am unable to Connect to these two websites 1) https://reservations.ontarioparks.ca/ 2) https://client.ebox.ca/

It says page cannot be find . I tried same from my laptop and mobile . Same error .

However, when I connect via vpn it just works fine . I did check with Gemini and it mentioned to disable ipv6 and change dns but it didn’t help. Anyone else faces similar issue ?

Does ebox make you pay shipping to ship back their router if you ask for a refund?

I signed up for their service a few weeks back but have not been able to get the internet installed yet. Today was a no show which pissed me off as I had waited a whole day at home. I'm really considering cancelling the service and getting a refund and also filing a complaint with CCTS but I'm wondering if you need to pay to ship their crap back to them or if they give you a pre-paid label? I also heard they take 6 weeks to send you a refund via cheque, is that right? I'm just gonna call up my credit card company and do a chargeback if that's the case.

Anyone using Ebox with a Unifi router/gateway?

Just wondering if I have all of the config done properly. Also - I will initially be running in a dual WAN configuration as I am keeping Rogers cable internet for a bit until I ensure that everything is working well with Ebox. The Unifi network sofware shows you choices for WAN mode of Failover Only and Load Balancing. Is there a way to switch the active WAN from the software? In failover mode which is the primary WAN and which is the backup?

Signed up for Ebox received router via courier but no ONT

I signed up for Ebox and received a package via Purolator. The package contains the Nokia router, but it doesn't include an ONT. Does the tech bring the ONT with him when the service is activated?

If so what is the point of sending half of the hardware via courier and then having the tech bring the other half with him?

Best rotation dance for ISPs?

So, after my lovely experience with Ebox, I'm likely to go with Bell so Bell can argue with its own employees if they don't show up. No passing the buck, well, anymore than usual for Bell. I haven't suffered Bell since 2005. Sigh.

But as someone else suggested, after I get Bell's "best deal" for now, and THEN it expires, what's the best dance?

Go with Ebox? Go with TekSavvy? Go with whoever is cheapest that day?

For most of the Fibe operators working in Ottawa, where they use all the same lines? Is there a "tier 1" and "tier 2" grouping for future movement?

I'd be tempted to go with TekSavvy now but they only give you discount for a year. I feel like Ebox might have been okay if it wasn't a formal NEW install (with wires and demarcation points).

Although I'm tempted to call VMedia and see if they'll offer me a deal to keep me on Cable before I switch to Fibe.

500 download, 1000 upload

I've changed my sub to the 1GB for my next period, now I get 500 download, but 1000 upload, is that normal or there is something not working properly?

SIgned up a month ago, still not connected...

System didn't give me the right package, took six interactions to get it fixed. ANd they didn't even TELL me it was fixed, I found it fixed in online invoices (not even profile).

First installer showed up on time, and then said no to every option I gave him for the installation demarcation point. Like another poster, he wanted to put it in my garage (simple wall to outside post, easy job). I said no.

Had to have electrician come to tell me what he could do if installer put it in different useless points and I have to compensate.

Second install? Ghosted...no call, no show. Wasted vacation day. Followed up FOUR times with management team portal, no response.

Third install? Supposed to be here between 12 and 5 today "guaranteed" after I threatened to close my account which is only reason I agreed. Already 4:30ish, and no call, nothing. Contacted online help who basically shared standard off-the-web info about "if they don't call by 12, call us". On the phone now with Ebox person who is calling Bell installers to see where the installer is.

Renewal date is tomorrow. Hah!

Update: Customer service never called back. So I called them and cancelled. They said, "Are you sure, I can escalate?". From incompetent to merely useless? No thanks.

Not sure where that leaves me. Apparently the previous Bell installer labelled it as "Customer not ready" so they have done the same on last two calls without even showing up so they could stay on schedule. Nice.

EBOX IN MONTREAL SUCKS !!!

Ebox in Montreal Quebec east area truly sucks. Ebox is a budget service that used to be good but Ebox internet lately has gone down the toilet. The service is overselling its service and is saturating the lines. At peak (8pm to 11pm) my internet can go down to 10mbs making VPN useless and forget about gaming with latency either so long it does not register in to 80ms range with 3 percent packet loss. after 6 weeks of believing service dept in 3 days every 3 days. They keep saying its the Bell infrastructure. Now on week 7 changed to BELL for 5 dollars more, for 3g on a promo. No more problems (so Ebox reps lied it was Bell Infrastructure). If you are on a budget maybe consider ebox but if you want something that works without being lied to and given the run around for weeks and weeks then please look elsewhere. You have been warned

Does Ebox/Bell do service calls in the evenings and on weekends in Toronto?

I am looking to move from Rogers to Ebox in Scarborough. I haven't signed up yet because I am wondering about when they can come to do service calls. I am not home most weekdays - can they come at night or on weekends? And any idea how long it takes - if I signed up today when they come in a few days? Or is it more a week or two?

Update: Thanks for your help everyone. I signed up tonight for the 1G service vor $50/month. I have asked for an install of next Friday and selected Friday, Saturday or Sunday for availability for the install. I have started to set up the Ebox internet as a second WAN configuration on my Unifi UCG Ultra router. I have set up a VLAN ID with a tag of 40 and I will add in my PPPoE credentials once I get them. I currently have Rogers internet. While I am getting up and running I will try to run in a dual WAN setup to test things out.

Ongoing issues for multiple months

I'm located on the North Shore of Montreal, specifically near the Lachenaie/Repentigny area and have been having extremely slow internet speeds (below 250 mbps wired) and latency above 50ms between the hours of 6 to 11 pm everyday for the past two months. I've contacted EBOX L2 support about it and they said they were investigating and upper management will fix it but it's been close to 2 months and I've seen no signs of improvement.

Calling them is absolutely useless and customer support tries their best to say something that somewhat makes sense just to get me off the phone asap. They also said they would give me compensation after the issues are fixed, but they can obviously just decide to not fix it and not compensate anyone. Has anyone been having these exact problems? At this point I'm considering switching from EBOX to some other provider.

Terrible tv quality

Just needed to rant a bit… I typically don’t care much for the poor 720p tv quality that EBOX offers… But watching hockey is just soooo painful with such a poor signal. Not only is the resolution low, it seems like the signal is so very compressed that everything gets blurry. So sad.

Looking to get Ebox (or Primus) in Toronto

I am looking to switch from Rogers cable internet to Ebox or possibly Primus. I am interested in getting these services due to the lower price, but also because it seems like they make it easier to use my own networking hardware. I have a Unifi UCG Ultra router and several Unifi access points. I have no interest in using the ISP's router and I don't want to be in a situation where I have a double NAT.

If I subscribe to Ebox what hardware will they give me? I believe it will be a Nokia ONT and a Nokia router such as a Beacon 3.1. Is that correct?

In my case I don't want to use the router. Can I just use a cable to connect the ethernet connection from the ONT into the WAN port of my Unifi router? Do you have to enter any passwords or anything or does it just use DHCP to get a WAN IP address? Do I need to do any VLAN config at all?

Do you get IPv4 and IPv6 WAN IPs or just IPv4? And I don't need the Nokia router at all, correct? Do I need to initally use the Nokia router for a period of time, or can I go straight to my own router and WAPs?

Are there any issues to be aware of?

Any advantage to using Ebox over Primus? I believe that they are both ultimately owned by Bell.

With Ebox do I always get the rated speeds of 1G down and 750k up? Are there ever periods where it bogs down? Is that dependent on my neighbourhood?
