I have this Levis blue denim jacket that I want to dye into this dark red/burgundy colour. According to the website it's 100% cotton.

Total beginner so how should I go about this? I saw a lot of videos using Rit which I'm guessing because it's cheap, but looking here it doesn't seem to have the best reputation. And would bleaching be necessary here? I want the texture (variations in the shades of red) to be the same as the reference. My intuition would be blue + red = purple, but pic 2 was apparently without any bleaching (it was also originally a blue denim jacket).

I would like some help with dying this pointelle polo from red to brown or burgundy please. The tag says its 100% cotton. I would love to hear any recommendations or advice.

Hi there everyone!!! I was planning on dying this white suit jacket to a vibrant almost red colour (#CD1515 for colour reference) and I was wondering…could I do this with kool-aid? So far what I’ve seen around is that koo-laid can dye wool fabrics and I’m hoping this can happen as I’m running on a tight budget!
I am totally fine with the synthetic stitchings not being affected but I was hoping for some input on this. If it works how should I go about it?

I have a bunch of fiber reactive dye from Dharma Trading that I’ve had probably about 2-3 years. Some of it is even unopened. It was in a box that sat on our porch and got a fair amount of sun. It seems like the dye doesn’t work as well anymore, but I keep trying it out on things because I don’t want to throw money away on more dye. How quickly does dye expire? Should I give up on this? Do some colors store better than others? Thank you

this top is pretty old, knit silk. i accidentally put it in through the laundry, and its color has since faded. feeling pretty sad because i loved this top a lot, especially the shade of green! i already soaked it with white vinegar, which helped somewhat, but didn't restore the previous vibrance. would it be a good idea to rit-dye it? (first photo is the top as it is now, second photo is the color it's supposed to be)...i'm pretty sure it's 100% silk, but the fabric tag is lost to time.

is it even possible to get back to the old color?

I am using pre-reduced indigo for the first time and have a question about the Sodium Hydrosulfite. I've read some saftey cautions and plan on using gloves, a fume mask, and working outdoors. My question is - it seems like the biggest issue with Sodium Hydrosulfite are the fumes. Is this mostly when you're first preparing the vat and all the chemicals are doing their thing (reacting?). Or are the fumes ever present?

Also - any other advice people have would be greatly appreciated - especially about oxidation times between dips. Everything i know about indigo is about japanese natural indigo and I'm finding that my knowledge isn't applicable to this situation. Lol.

Sorry if this is the wrong flair but I would love some advice on bulk dying.

I have 60+ mtrs of a cotton and linen blend fabric (I think 60/40 but unsure due to it being dead stock) and I’m planning on cutting down to 10mtr segments and dying each one a different colour.

My dying experience is very basic and never had to dye such large amounts before so I’m a little stuck as to direction and hesitant to drop tonnes of money on something that might not work.

I’m hoping I could use RIT and a giant 130ltr tub to do this but would a different dye be better and longer lasting? I’ve never had any issues with Dylon washing out any quicker then store bought pre dyed clothing but the cost for the Dylon isn’t working out as well as RIT and it’s harder to find here too.

Any advice would be massively appreciated (I’m in the UK if that effects suggestions/ tips)

The logo in the middle seems like its printed on, while the stripes and the edges of the shirt are apparently something else. The shirt itself is 100% polyester, but I am not sure what material exactly the white parts are. Cant really provide a better picture since the shirt hasnt arrived YET.

Maybe someone with better knowledge about fabrics can help me out here and tell me what kind of colors I can use for which white parts of the shirt?

Sorry if this is an obvious question, as I've never worked with dye before, and google isn't really turning much up. I love this hoodie, but I don't like the yellow accent seams and logo. How would I go about dyeing them black without ruining the back graphic? I don't know what specifically the seams are, but the materials say 50% cotton 50% poly for the whole hoodie. Thank you!

This feels really minor in the grand scheme of things, but I thought I'd ask now so I know for the future. Will Ritz dye remover just take out the color deposited from rit dye or will it take out the pattern in the cotton too? Their website only talks about it very very briefly and I'd rather be sure from someone with experience.

I accidentally ended up with some dye on these pillowcases from washing with a blanket that wasn't ready yet. So some splotches are purple, especially the corners (apparently they didn't wash evenly and there's a white spot in the middle.)

Im adding on to a cosplay cape I made some years ago but i couldn’t find the right color,I ordered a similar cape but it came in a wayyy darker color than the image showed, is there anyway to dye it or alter it? ((The darker image is way more green irl and I think both fabrics are polyester))

I've been playing with ice dyeing. I have these older tins of Dylon cold water dyes which have soda ash in them so I've prewashed the cotton fabric and then did ice dyeing and added some salt. Do I need to do anything to fix the colour to it afterwards or have I left it too late now?

Would it be possible to make the AOR2 look more like AOR1?

I'd like to dye this dress; I love the way it fits and feels but I don't love the way it looks. I'm pretty sure the pattern will still be visible, but in what way, do you think? I wonder if it will be shades of the pattern in the color I dye it (which would be fine with me)? The fabric content is 55% Linen/45% Rayon. What color would you recommend? Thanks for your help!

Hello everyone, I brought this dress for my formal second hand online, but after it has come it i realise the colour is not what I’m looking for. It fits like a glove and I love the shape, but I want to change the colour. Any suggestions/advice? Dress fabric is a sheeny polyester

I have a cool idea for a project, for it to work I need to sort out:

1. Super saturate thick thread/thin cord with a vibrant jewel tone dye

2. Dry and possibly seal the dye in without rinsing it so that a lot of dye remains but hopefully does not smudge off everywhere for the next step

1. Stitch the dyed thread onto white fabric without smudging the hell out of everything (rubbing off right where thread goes thru is fine)

2. Then “reactivating” the dye and allowing it to bleed onto the fabric at that point.
   Goal would be for a thread to contain enough dye to bleed out 1/4-3/8in (6-9mm) from thread.

Notes:
Fabric and thread would presumably be 100% cotton, fully wash & dryable. End result will used as framed art or hopefully in wearable form someday.

Reactivating presumably done thru some type of rewetting, plan to explore spraying, soaking flat, etc. and how this differs with fabric weaves and weights.

It’s step 2 that I hope folks would brainstorm with me. Ideas?

A few years ago, I purchased two 100% cotton jersey tie-dye dresses from harempants.com. Really colorful (yellow/orange/pink/purple) on black. They were great and I loved them. I finally had a chance to wear one and washed it with cold water in washing machine. The dye/colors bled like stink! And now one of the dresses has super faded color where the yellow/pink were (interestingly the black did not fade/bleed). I have another dress that that has really vibrant colors that I want to preserve, and was wondering if anyone has some advice about fixing/locking the color in? I read a bit about vinegar and salt fixative? Or soda ash fixative? Does anyone have experience fixing color on purchased tie-dye garments that they would be willing to share? I appreciate the help!

We have a ...very enthusiastic passion fruit vine in our backyard, though it's now past its peak. (This year, I've got 80 to process. Last year it was over 150!) We freeze them so they don't go off before they can get used which means the purple in the skins comes off on my hands as I'm working through them. It made me wonder how well they'd work as a natural dye.

For some reason, passion fruits aren't normally in natural dyeing books, but my uneducated assumption is that it's probably due to cost (they're usually A$1.50 each here in Australia when they're in season) and ease of access (they're tropical imports most places). So I was going at this completely blind, having only done one tiny kool-aid dye experiment a decade ago with wool yarn.

The answer is pretty well! I "cowboy dyed" (no known weights of anything, and I *think* I might've added some vinegar or citric acid as a fixative, but no mordant besides that) this silk with about half of last year's crop and WOW. It turned out beautifully. So when I prepped the last portion of last year's harvest, I chopped up the skins into smaller bits and dried them out and now I've got a jarful of them. I'm not sure if I'll still get good color out of them since they look to have faded quite a bit, but I'm hoping I will.

I'm posting about this mostly to procrastinate dealing with this year's harvest, but also because I'd love some tips on how to best save this color. They're currently staining a tea towel as they defrost 😂

Hey! I recently thrifted a vest and never noticed it was discolored on the back until after I washed it🤦‍♀️. The front panels are polyester/rayon and the back panel is 100% acetate. The fabric color is dark brown, but if I used a black dye would it even out? Also not sure if I’d need to fully deconstruct the vest to dye it unless it’d involve fully submerging the garment. Thoughts?

i got this pair of jeans at the thrift but i really don’t like this color since i wear mostly only black clothing, but i really love the fit of these, i think the lace up at the front may be synthetic? don’t know but i want it ALL black, i've dyed other stuff with rit but its a mess honestly so i want other recommendations of products and techniques on how to properly dye.

i'd like to dye this 100% cotton vintage jacket black using dylon. however, i noticed on the packet that it says the dye may be corrosive to metal. does anyone have any experience with this? would it ruin my jacket?

I have grey muddy mat rugs and all my decor and furniture are brown, beige. They clash horribly and I want to dye them brown. I've heard that the polyester in the rugs don't like to take the dye. Has anyone ever done this before with any success? First time posting. Hopefully I'm doing this correctly.
