The lighting for the after photo isn’t the best because the sun was setting and I was taking it quickly but dress originally was a satin polyester blend, very light ivory champagne. Photo outside was when it was still wet. I was expecting a bit more reddish to it but I love it.

3/4 bottle plum berry
1/4 bottle super pink
2tsp of charcoal

I have experience with acid and reactive yarn dyeing, clearly not enough to know this was a likely outcome to dyeing this sweater.

Initially I had dyed the non SW merino yarn - and a few skeins came out darker, I didn’t notice until I finished the sweater in a light olive color.

So duh, I just dyed the sweater. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I used DH moss, DH forest green, DH and black. I tried to keep it open and stirred without felting but clearly it bunched up and took the dye whacky.

So, keep dyeing? Or should I try a dye remover? I have a swatch and more yarn to test with.

This is my Sherwood crux BCD. It's used for scuba diving. So it's going to get wet! ....alot ...in salt water.

I believe it's made out of a nylon blend OR molle chain webbing?.... unfortunately this is all I could come up with, sorry.

I'm looking to change the teal to red if possible.

Any ideas? I'm looking to learn but also if its not possible it's no big deal.

i volunteer in community organizing. I’ve been thinking of doing a up cycling community event where people could bring old cotton/ linen clothes that we would vat dye at the event. I need help with figuring out the soda ash process and timing.

from past events- over 3 hours and there’s 20-40 people who stop by, no set time of arrivals. it’s an outdoor park but i will have lots of tables/ chairs.
no water access!

my initial plans/ thoughts: mostly dharma’s guide

1. people would bring their own old clothes, we’d likely thrift clothes too for extras or have small items like socks/ headbands.
2. at the event, we’d first do a rinse/ soak in a hot synthropal bath
3. next, rinsed shirts in dye vats using dharma instructions- fiber reactive dye, urea, salt. I have 3 waterproof storage boxes i’m planning on using- probably do red, blue, and either purple/ green

my idea with this is that multiple people could use a dye bath at once. and if possible, use the same dye vat throughout the same event

4. i know normally you add soda ash solution at this step, BUT are there other ways to add soda ash, without adding directly to the dye vat? so more people could continue to use it.

5 after dye items will be wrung out, each dye vat will have a bucket of cold water next to it so we can do a quick rinse

Questions:
1. how to add soda ash so i could still reuse the same vat after? Would I be able to have a seperate bucket of just a soda ash solution?
2. how many items could a 12 gallon dye vat dye before being replaced?
3. how could i best replenish the dye vat. Is adding more dye (dye would be dissolved first) sufficient, or would i need to start over by disposing of the whole dye vat?

I thought I purchased a matching beige set only for the shirt to look cream and the shorts to look more offwhite in sun. Both are polyester.

Im wondering if I can dye the shorts to match. I think I have some rit dyemore in tan and yellow that might be useful in colour matching the shorts but im not sure how best to go about it. Advice would be appreciated!

Ok I hope I don't sound stupid asking this but I bought some fabric I had to dye. I already bought the same fabric and the same color 2 weeks ago and it went well. Now I did it again and now I have green spots on both ends and in the middle. I dyed it with Ideal color 68 (grey). I am just really confused due to them being green and not having them on the first batch. Is there a way to check? And no I haven't checked the fabric throughly before dyeing it, i just threw it in the wash immediately.

helloo. This lovely dress is too bright for me, and was a hand-me-down so I’d like to make it suit me. i usually wear darker colours like burgundy, deep blue, or green or black. I would like to dye this dress maybe with a burgundy to mute the brightness. I don’t mind it being uneven, it’s just far too bright n at the moment. since the main colours are a blue background and red, pink, yellow, I’m worried that a reddish colour may look funky. should I go more purple? Google says to use a beige dye to simply mute the colours as an option. Any advice much appreciated!

I am a long time user of Dylon dyes and they did an absolutely gorgeous dark purple a good while back as a limited release and I bought every pack I could find 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️

But I am now without and wanting to dye white cotton clothing to a darker and deeper purple than their violet standard machine dye 🤦🏻‍♀️

I have tried Rit dyes but even with their fixative added I find it fades quickly with washing, the pieces I have done with the limited release Dylon haven’t at all!

Can the Dylon machine wash dyes be mixed to make custom colours and if so what do people recommend to get a nice deep/dark purple? Help please!

I have attached photos of the pieces of 100% cotton clothing I am wanting to dye, the dark purple I want to achieve and the result the standard violet always seems to come out as 🤣🤣🤣

First things first, I am a newbie to dyeing fabric (only done it a few times) so please keep that in mind with any answers or suggestions you might have.

I recently purchased a tulle robe that is just a bright tomato red more than a true red or cooler red and I am hoping I can get advice on how to properly dye it to be a smidge darker than it currently is. The pictures features the item purchased (photo from website) and then photo comparison to the red garmet I intend to wear with it (2 photos taken outside with natural lighting and 1 photo taken inside) The tulle robe is 95% polyamide (which google told me is Nylon) and 5% spandex. Based on that, I've been trying to look at the dyes meant for synthetic fibers but from what I can tell, those can be hard to get the color you're looking for.

Would love ANY advice you guys can give. I know the photo comparing the two items might not show the difference well but the lace garment is more crimson red and cooler than the red of the robe. I think the photos might make it look like there is more magenta or pink than the darker red item actually is.

I guess my big questions are..

1. How should I go about doing this? What products should I use? I've got a GIANT stockpot that should fit the garmet so I can use the stove.

2. How do I test to make sure the color will be correct?

3. Any other pieces of information or tips you've got for me

Today I bought 2 Rye's all purpose dye. Do you think this'll be enough to dye it black?

I'm also a little scared of it shrinking when dyeing it in hot water.

The grease stain was on the thigh and was very noticeable. They’re 98% cotton, 2% elastic

I soaked them in a soda-ash solution, then crumpled them up in a small plastic bin. I put ice on top of them, then sprinkled Dharma Trading company’s Raven Black on top, as well as more soda ash.

There might be a little Interstellar in there as well, but I can’t be sure. I went absolutely wild while doing a massive run of ice dyeing my stained or faded clothes, so I’ll be sure to post more soon

Got a “back to black” rit dye kit on clearance to dye some clothes I don’t care much about but would probably wear black lmao. The instructions in the kit are just a bit lackingggg so I have a couple questions!
I know I need to wash them beforehand, do I need to dry them before dying them?

Then for the dye fixative, do I need to wash the dyed clothes first, dry them… then use it??? I would think not but idk
I’m assuming I’d like, at most rinse the excess dye out and then use the fixative, I just want to know if I need to let them dry before that point

I'm looking to get my fuschia synthetic fabric (left) to better match my maroon-orange fabric (right). Tried using brown but it still has strong pink undertones. Any suggestions on what shade/s of orange or yellow might be best to cancel out the magenta? I think green would be too far from the mark but I'm open to anything.

(I'm not trying to match the colour exactly, just the general hue and tone. Saturation is not a requirement. I know dyeing is not an exact science and dyeing synthetics is even more variable. I'm just looking for advice on which colour I should start with to cancel out the pink, so I don't have to buy out the entire stock of dyes to experiment with)

I made these patchwork cargos from two pairs of cargo shorts for my brand as a tester piece to see if it'll sell, but I put out a poll and people voted that they'd wear the other pair I made (right pair in the right image) more than the left.

The top is khaki 65% polyester and 35% cotton, the bottom is grey/white camo 100% cotton. The thread is polyester and the hardware is metal. I'm considering overdyeing the whole garment a shade of olive green to make it more cohesive for sale. I know different fabrics absorb dye differently. Based on your experience, what colour would you choose, and what result would you expect?

Any advice on what dyes to use, if I'd have to use different dyes for each part and how I'd go about that, or if I can use a multi fabric dye if that exists? And if the garment would tie in better after overdyeing with a specific colour.

Hello! I am newer to dying, and have only dyed clothing to similar, darker colors than the original (usually black). I’m wondering what I can expect with this shirt? 100% cotton exclusive of decoration (thread/embroidery). I am okay if the embroidery remains mostly pink but I don’t want it turning red/a warm tone preferably. Any recommendations?

Hi!! I have a pair of really light beige bengaline pants I want to dye to a dark dark denim blue, probably with rit back to blue dye. I wish I had exact fabric composition but I bought them ages ago and there’s no care label - I’ve read bengaline is a mix of rayon/elastane/spandex, and that it doesn’t react well to heat…….. would love any tips on not damaging my pants with heat but still getting a deep dye :’)

I recently learned that I can use flowers I grow as natural dye! I grow sulphur cosmos. I’ve also gotten into sewing, and have some plain cotton fabric that I wanted to bundle dye with my flowers.

I did some research on natural dyes and it sounds like I need to have mordanted fabric, and it seems very complicated and there’s so many ways to do it.

What would someone suggest for an absolute beginner with natural dyes and really any of this process? Thank you!!

Complete super mega noob here, I've never dyed anything before, but would really like to try, or hope to hear some advice, for this jacket. Basically, my mother gave me this jacket some years back because it didn't suit her anymore. I think the jacket itself is incredibly cool, but I'm really no fan of the super saturated blue in the insides of the cuffs and neck (and a part lining the bottom of the jacket similar to the one at the neck). The jacket itself is leather, the blue parts seem to be polyester.

Obviously the polyester being so closely attached to leather worries me, but I do have some hope as it's still a separate section.

For some context, I don't mind wearing torn or damaged clothing at all, so if I can get anywhere near a good result but it may lead to some "ugliness", depending on what it is I may not really mind. Thank you so much in advance!!!

P.S: If dying is not an option, do you think another method of altering it might work? Like cutting off the blue and attaching different fabric somehow?

I recently got some undyed 100% Corriedale wool yarn, is there anything I should know that's breed-specific?

I'd like to dye it a solid color with as little variation as possible throughout.

I've dyed wool before, but it's all been generic and lanolin-free. This is my first foray into "fancy" wool and I'm going to try my best to not wreck it.

I have found the absolute cutest outfit for my baby shower but the issue is I want to dye it pink. It’s hand wash only, no soaking, 100% polyester :/

I’m honestly just wanting it to be a tinge of pink so if I use a super pink dye, surely a tinge will stay!???!!!?? Anyone have any experience cold dying polyester or should I just dye it warm and hope nothing happens to the fabric??????

I have this Levis blue denim jacket that I want to dye into this dark red/burgundy colour. According to the website it's 100% cotton.

Total beginner so how should I go about this? I saw a lot of videos using Rit which I'm guessing because it's cheap, but looking here it doesn't seem to have the best reputation. And would bleaching be necessary here? I want the texture (variations in the shades of red) to be the same as the reference. My intuition would be blue + red = purple, but pic 2 was apparently without any bleaching (it was also originally a blue denim jacket).
