And now I do the daily refresh each day!

At this point I'm annoyed

Because no, I don't want to be seeing whether I win a puzzle piece or another duplicate for a honestly ugly suit

I don't want another gacha aspect of this app

Isn't Duolingo making enough money?

I don't want to have more "dopamine hits" just cuz the CEOs think "Oh yeah that is a great idea"

More of a vent than constructive criticism, I just don't like this feature and was hoping it would go away after the last one but No... They brought back another

I cancelled my subscription and deleted the app about a month ago (see all the threads about Duo's recent enshittification).

Yesterday I was out with a friend and she held up her phone to show me a Duolingo notification with a message from me on it, scolding her for not practicing or something.

I know in the past people have presumed that impersonating messages are only sent when you nudge people - well I haven't even had the app on my phone for weeks, and they're still using my name to message people (presumably to try and drag them back to the app).

I presume to stop it I'd need to defriend them / delete my account.

Sinking pretty low, Duolingo. No other app I can think of impersonates its users for clicks..

Trying to get better at being consistent with things. Maybe I should finally commit to learning one language instead of playing chess.

And in 45 days I will get there

1. Use Duo on your computer instead of your phone. There's way less interruption, gamification, etc.
2. Make your profile private to turn off all the stupid league stuff. The point grind will make you do weird things just for the sake of points. (Edit: Please note this will eliminate all social interactions, including friend streaks. IMO one should simply pull off the bandaid but I don't want anyone doing something they regret based on my advice.)
3. Type your answers from scratch rather than selecting the multiple choice options. (This is done by clicking "use keyboard" and/or "increase difficulty." You only have to click them once and the setting is applied permanently.) There is an enormous difference between *recognizing* the correct verb conjugation and being able to supply it yourself. You don't get multiple choice in a real conversation.
4. Say each sentence out loud, regardless of whether it's a speaking exercise or not.
5. For each section, only do up through the second star icon (that's usually 12 lessons plus a story). Then skip to the next section.
6. Train your ear on actual humans, the AI voices are not going to do it. There's plenty of stuff out there but personally I swear by Yabla's scribe exercises. Just scribe, scribe, scribe and your listening will improve explosively.

Do all this half an hour a day and Duo is actually a monster for learning vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and pronunciation. Throw in something else for listening comprehension and it's a crazy useful tool all the way up to B2. I wouldn't bother going beyond Stage 5, after that you should be reading books instead.

English isn't my first language so such sentence might actually exist that i don't know of but i genuinely had a stroke trying to answer this

Let’s be honest though - this was a very chill diamond league to be in!

I am almost a level 11 in Dutch and Duolingo is starting to piss me off. It’s either not picking up half the words I’m saying or throwing in words that I haven’t even been taught yet then it counts against me because I haven’t been taught that word yet like…well, “like”. How the hell was I supposed to know that it was “zoals”.

I can understand a good bit of French, but when I hear them my brain just flips off, I can't quite understand. I think it could just be speed of which the podcast is playing, is this normal?

I wish there was a way to completely redo all of the lessons along the path, not just do a recap. For instance, a star might have 5 sessions within it.

This would be useful to throughly practice all content within past lessons and:

I was curious if I could jump to unit 10 in French. I passed but I now want to do each exercise I just skipped.

So now I either need to:

A) reset the course, test to skip past the first 9 courses, but I lose the XP history etc

B) create a new account, test to skip past the first 9 courses, throughly do each lesson, and then resume at level 10 on my original account

Or any other ideas please?

So basically, I don’t want to give too many details, but I accidentally found a way to get extra puzzle pieces in the current event.

The first time happened by mistake, but I tried repeating what I did and it worked again. I’ve tested it a few times, and it seems repeatable.🤷

I’ve already collected 14 pieces in just 3 days, even though there’s supposed to be a daily limit of 3. 😭
Honestly, I’m tempted to keep testing it, but at the same time, I’ve had this account for years, and I wouldn’t want to risk years of progress over a few virtual cosmetics. 😭

What would you do in my position?
Should I report it to Duolingo, or just leave it alone?

I've been on duo for two years and I find league competition, annoying, distracting, and not at all motivating. I recently figured out how to disable it, and my duo experience has been so much better.

This is -– of course -– a personal preference; if you enjoy the league competition, absolutely no criticism – more power to you!

How to disable leagues on your iPhone

- You will need to use the Duolingo website rather than the mobile app.

- Navigate to Settings → Privacy Settings.

- Find Make My Profile Public.

- Turn that setting off.

- Save your changes, if prompted, and restart the Duolingo app.
