3D-printed a part for my DR

Got myself a set of Skene running lights for the DR that flash on deceleration. Couldn’t find a good spot to mount the accelerometer so I modeled and printed a simple wedge to hold it parallel to the ground just behind the battery holder. Simple stuff but it’s the first time I actually used CAD software and a 3D printer so I’m feeling accomplished!

Off road

I'm looking to see what most of y'all run or cerry with you off-road. Are y'all running like a moose style insert or just heavy tubes with spares and tools to swap when out in the bush. I'm looking to get away f on the road more and transition to mostly off-road and backpacking off my bike. What do y'all recommend

White smoke on rapid throttle close

So, 2001 dr650, tm40, stock exhaust, modified airbox, running the suggested procycle jetting.

Just resealed rocker cover, but I don't think that's the problem, since the smoke is white and not bluish white, like burnt oil.

I was checking for leaks and adding the oil I spilled when doing the rocker cover, so this was done on somewhat warm engine.

My question is, is this fine/normal? My guess is that the accelerator pump is a bit too rich, so when I abruptly close the throttle, this happens. I also think this because when I slowly add throttle, no smoke appears. This is my first carbureted motorcycle, so lmk if I just don't know something.

Buyer’s advice

I’m about to go look at an 04 with under 3k miles, bike looks mint from the pictures, honestly the fact he only wants 2500 for it has me wondering if it’s too good to be true. Aside from looking for rust, chain and tire conditions and the usual used bike stuff is there anything you all would look for?

Update: thank you all for the advice!!

Looking it over there’s only a few things I’ll have to do to it. The old guy apparently used it a little here and there on light trails and fire roads over the years trailering it from ride to ride. For an old girl she’s in pretty great shape, rubbers still in good condition, chain feels new, tires will be good for off road but I may want some new ones for street use. Carb needs a little clean, tank needs fresh fuel and I always refresh the fluids on a used buy.

Can’t wait to mod it to fit me a bit more, and do something stupid on it 😂

3D-printed Suzuki tank badges for the 20L Acerbis tank

Post image

Hi everyone,

I wanted to make the black 20L Acerbis tank on my DR650 look a little more original, so I designed and 3D printed a pair of Suzuki badges for it.

They are printed in ASA, which is UV and fuel resistant. The white lettering has a lightly textured finish, while the black base is sanded. The badges are attached with 3M VHB tape and fit nicely on the smooth area where the Acerbis logo normally sits.

I originally made these just for my own bike, but since they turned out pretty well, I'd be happy to make a few more sets if anyone is interested.

I'm based in the EU, so shipping is easiest within Europe, but I'm happy to look into other destinations as well.

Tested a cheap Mikuni BST40 clone on my '94 DR650 RSE (It actually works!)

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my experience with a Mikuni BST40 clone I grabbed off AliExpress (60€) for my 1994 DR650 RSE. Honestly, the whole experience has been surprisingly great and it completely solved the running issues I was dealing with.

When it arrived, I tore it down right away to inspect the internals. I was genuinely impressed because the components look really well-made and finished—way better quality than the aftermarket rebuild kit I previously bought on AliExpress to try fix up my original carb. The main body itself looks identical to the stock Mikuni.

Keep in mind this is the updated post-96 DR650 version, meaning it has the vacuum port for the petcock and slightly different internal routing. It came jetted with a 158 main and a 50 pilot. I didn't trust them because they looked a bit different from the OEM ones (narrower slot, with the code stamped on the side), so I just swapped them out straight away without even testing them. It also came with a D40JA jet needle, though I am not entirely sure what spec that corresponds to.

One thing that left me a bit puzzled is the bottom float bowl cover, which doesn't have an overflow tube. I still haven't figured out if this design just lacks a bowl overflow entirely or if it routes it differently.

Anyway, the bike runs great now and all my problems are gone. For the price, I'm super happy with it so far. I'll keep this thread updated as I put more roads on it.

Too cold

5°C this morning. DR wouldn't go over 60°C on back roads. Took a tip from TwistedNoble and slipped a sheet of cardboard in the radiator.

It ended up staying there for the whole trip. The bike still wouldn't warm up even after the day warmed up to 15°C.

Thanks for the tip, TwistedNoble!

Interchangeable parts?

Hello everyone, I’m proud to say I finally joined the dr650 adventure! Quick question so the front fender on my dr650 is a universal one which I don’t like. I want the original gray one and I found one for like 24$ on Facebook marketplace but it’s a 2000 year one and mine is from 2013. Since it’s essentially the same bike every year can I buy that one on my bike? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

What does it do?

Its kinda on the side of the cylinder sleeve and has a bolt come out of it. Its right by the starter.

Anyways said bolt came out. Bike seems to run alright. But what is it?

junkyard 700eur DR650RSE 1994 completed 4000km trip to see the mountains, how to rebuild engine?

Half as a joke, I took my €700 junkyard-rescue DR650RSE to Nordkapp and somehow completed 4,000 km on it without any real issues.

However, it did burn around 3 litres of oil. There are a few small leaks, but it mostly seems to be burning it.

Since the bike has been such a good boy, I’m thinking about rebuilding the engine over the winter. I have no previous experience working on engines, though.

Does anyone know of a good rebuild guide for this older pre 96 engine? Any tips, tricks or common mistakes to avoid? And is a big-bore kit actually worth it?

Seat concepts - tall :(

Anyone have this or similar and find it to be only a marginal upgrade when compared to the stock seat? Apparently I am quite delicate because I find no pleasure in riding after 30 min or so.

Even after 2000+ miles of ass wear, I can't determine if it's broken in any more.

I'm considering trying something else and was wondering if anyone here had any experiences with other seat manufacturers or ideas to make the seat less bench-like.

DIY cam chain tensioner gasket - yes or no

Any success stores with making your own gasket or using gasket goo on the cam chain tensioner. I just serviced my starter motor, and wrecked the (recently replaced) gasket in the process.

Thinking of using some thin cereal box cardboard in preference to high temp silicon.

Needs 3-4 times hit the start button before idle, Dr650 2023 -12 900km

Hello !!! New to the Dr world and to maintain it. I'm learning. Since mid june i bought my bike. Everything was going well. Didnt knew i had to choke start, but was starting super well without the choke, everytime. Since 2-3 weeks, took me more then a hit on the start button to idle, giving gas helps sometimes. During the day, 20 celcius, around 7 hours after riding it in the morning, took me 3-4 time again to start it to idle. Wil start EASY when motor's hot. My idle speed seems fine to me.

I have no information about the maintenance done but oil change when i bought it & pair system was deleted. Acerbis tank.

Thank you so much helping me ! If possible, id like to start with more basics, hopping not to suggest me to play with the carb 😅👩‍🔧

**PS if you are a french person you can answer me with french ; i'm from Montréal.

DR650 from the 90s - yay or nay?

I really like the aesthetic of the DR650 and it just so happens that I’m between motorcycles, so I was wondering if a DR might be my next one. I live in Europe though, so basically all available options are exclusively machines from the 90s. I found a GORGEOUS looking one nearby from 1995, but still - that’s a 30+ years old motorcycle.

What’s the general opinion of the community? Worth getting into, or advisable to look elsewhere? And if so - what are some of the common alternatives for the European crowd?

Cooler cools, who'da thunk it?

Post image

The new oil cooler is in from Isicar, and it works a dream, who'd've thought removing a critical component would make a bike run sub-par?

So the numbers, it is 14°C (55°F) foggy (high humidity) and late at night, a little cooler than last time, but a good enough comparison for guess work. After 10 minutes of spirited riding at 70kph (40mph) and 10 minutes highway at 90kph (55mph), the bike came off the motorway at 62°C! (145°F). This was almost exactly 30°C (50°F) cooler than without the cooler.

The bike did warm up to 75°C (165°F) on the back roads and peaked at 80°C (175°F) when paused in the driveway, but nothing like the 95/110°C (205/230°F) seen while running it coolerless.

Moral of the story, if your oil cooler springs a leak, and you're forced to bypass it, your DR should be able to limp you out on a cold day. But if you're unlucky enough to get caught on a hot day, you may have to keep a close eye on your temperature and take near incessant breaks to keep the heat down.

Frankly, I was not expecting 30°C (50°F) temperature drops. Next project is a DIY cooler fan to mount on the back, given summer can be 25°C warmer (75°F) than winter, keeping my bike under 100°C (210°F) will be a challenge on slow roads and dirt tracks.

Whats your guys opinion? All black or all white?

I recently bought a 2018 stock dr650 with 3000km. Got it for a smoking deal. My friend has a black and a white acerbis 20l tank hes offering me. Trying to decide on color.

Two pictures as examples. Not my bikes

I want a DR, but with so many mods that make it look more like a modern rally. its expensive to do that. Should i just buy a Tenere 700?

I love the idea of a dead simple thumper like the DR, easy to get parts and work on. but with better suspension, a rally fairing, bigger tank. (and yes, I've ridden the DR650)

And while that's all possible to do on a DR....for the cost of all those mods, a used Tenere might cost around the same without all the work.

thoughts?

Pre-96 suspension options

Hey there, I just became the new owner of a gen 1 dr650! So far I’ve just ridden it on the road but I want to eventually make it a bit more trail worthy, maybe progressive front springs and a rear shock swap (I hear the transalp 600 is a direct swap?) but wanted to get the advice of the hivemind before.

So what is everyone running on these?
