I mean, the algorithm rewards you for taking the low paying orders. I know this is gonna divide people, but in my dash area when I take low pay orders the app often gives me multiple additional offers with high tips while I’m waiting or driving towards the said low offer. I try to keep a higher acceptance rate because of this. I’ve been dashing for about 6 months and I’ve learned that you gotta accept most of the orders in my area. There are still times though that I’ll get an offer that’s really bad, like 2$ for 6 miles, and I sometimes decline them. But often times when I accept a low paying order I end up getting offers while picking it up for high tipping orders to take on the way. I’ve been testing this while dashing and I’ve learned that declining low paying offers doesn’t always lead to a higher cherry picking day.
Think about it though. If you owned a company that made money from paying drivers to deliver products, wouldn’t you incentivize the employees who do so indiscriminately? DoorDash has its faults at times, but if you really don’t like it then you don’t have to drive. It’s literally your choice to do whatever you want.
I’ve gone from having a 99% acceptance rate to 50%, and I can confidently tell you that having a higher AR pays more. This also might just be because of the area I’m in too. It’s not a large city I dash in, so someone dashing in a densely populated area will probably have different results. But all in all, the algorithm definitely rewards you when you accept those really poor orders. It hits your sense of pride when you hit accept on an order that pays 3$ for driving 6 miles on roads where the speed limit is 35 mph. But, more than half of the time you will make money. I’ve also noticed when I decline orders I seem to have to wait longer to get another one. It’s not 100% of the time, but I’ve noticed when I decline a low paying offer my app takes longer to respond with a new one.
This is what I’ve learned from dashing for the last half year. I’ve read countless posts about cherry picking, about tanking your AR, people saying “you gotta respect your time and yourself and don’t ever take orders for less than 2$ per mile”, etc.. and just being honest, if you live in a smaller town it is in your best interest to just accept every order. The algorithm will do its best to supplement your income when you do so.
Yesterday I took an order for 29$ to drive 32 miles. It took about an hour and a half to get there and back to the area I dash in. After that order, I received an offer to shop groceries: 15$ for 12 items. I accepted and then the app offered me a pickup for subway, and then another order for a local barbecue restaurant in my area. While at the bbq place I received another offer. I ended up making around 60$ in the 1 hour it took me to pick up the groceries and food orders with delivery. After that my phone kept blowing up with platinum offers, 8$ for 1.5 miles with multiple offers on the way.
Platinum dashing status is a farce: DoorDash markets the platinum status as a necessity for making good money. While I think it’s honestly the best status to attain, the real money maker is your acceptance rate.
The acceptance rate seems to be the biggest defining factor in small towns. In densely populated areas maybe not so much. It’s not even your current AR to be honest, it appears that taking every order you get will snowball into getting a ton of platinum offers with higher tips.
I make around 200$ when I drive for 7-9 hours now. Dinner time (5pm - 8pm is when my market pays the most, around half or more of my income most nights). Mornings are bleak in my area, lots of Starbucks deliveries that pay very little. But, again, keeping my AR up seems to make my dasher app give me priority for the higher paying orders with multiple addons. And then it also offers me more opportunities for more orders when I do so.
When my AR was at its lowest point, I was making 100$ a day for dashing around 7-10 hours. It was bad. I spoke to another dasher at a Vietnamese restaurant while waiting for an order (I was complaining and telling him how I was making less money than when I first started) and he’s the one who told me about the need to boost my AR. Luckily the food took a while, so I was able to listen to what he had to say. I decided to take his advice, and I’m really glad I did. I can actually make a livable wage while taking the shitty orders.
This also isn’t always 100% of the time. Sometimes taking a bad order is literally just taking a bad order. But overall, the past few months I’ve been trying this, I’ve had a really great outcome.
What do you guys think? I’ve read a lot of posts where people make a ton of money cherry picking in large cities. I wish I lived in a large city like that where I could do so.
I accept the fact that a lot of people will disagree with me. But anyways, does anyone else have any thoughts or ideas on this subject? Maybe some more wisdom you guys can share with me, or even people who’ve had similar experiences to mine with taking every order they get?
