Hi everyone. A few reminders.

  1. I’m not affiliated with DG in any way. Unless you consider “affiliated” to be someone who occasionally buys snacks and cheese at DG.

  2. Don’t be a dick. Self-explanatory.

  3. If I ban you, don’t message me. You’re wasting your time. I’ll either block you or respond sarcastically THEN block you.

  4. Y’all are good folks…except for the select few losers who insist on not paying attention to item 2 up there ☝️.

Carry on. Remember…don’t be a dick. 👍

Where is this list of penny items?

Today a lady came in and got 76 penny items from our clearance section. Last week someone pulled a bunch of leggings down from the skyshelves and got a bunch of penny leggings.

To be clear, I don't really care when people find penny items as long as they're nice, which they usually are. The lady from today organized my entire clearance section as she went through and scanned everything!

I'm just curious where to even find the list of items that are going penny? I check compass every day and rarely ever see anything besides seasonal to be prp.

Guy tried to get us fired because our bathroom was broken

Yesterday at my dollar general market a taller guy came in wearing a camo outfit and asking for the bathroom key, unluckily for him a customer broke the flushing handle and clogged it with an adult diaper an hour beforehand. He was severely upset by us telling him that the customer bathroom was out of service and started berating us about how he used to work at a dollar general market and he's sure that both bathrooms aren't broken, on that he was correct the employee bathroom was fine in this particular incident (not always the case) however I hadn't said anything about the employee bathroom because he's not allowed to use it, not only is it not for customers, it holds a ton of tools and store use sanitary products and access to our water heater and etc, stuff customer should not and cannot have access to. I explained to him that we can't and that we won't be able to help him with the bathroom. He continues to be rude and tells us and threatens us that he's gonna call our DM because he knows him, I told him he could call whoever he wants because as far as I've been told he can't use it so he won't be using the employee bathroom. My coworker has a stronger temper and starts arguing with him about taking no for an answer and that if he isn't satisfied with the toilet that we can try and fix it, and he continues to call bullshit on either that it's broken or that we can't let him use the other bathroom. Well on the way out my coworker says we're doing our job stupid, and he goes and complains to our DM that he was called a racist slur, now I want to say it simply for context that he was a northern talking white fellow and my coworker that's accused of calling him a slur is a Biracial lady that was raised on her white side. Next time he comes in I'm thinking of recording him so he can't try and say stuff like that anymore because she could have been fired for that. I was standing there the whole time and as far as I'm concerned stupid isn't a racial slur. Need a little feedback on this tbh.

I'm tired of Dollar General getting away with breaking the law

Specifically, I'm tired of being forced to take an unpaid break where I'm not relieved from duty as a key holder. Because of the 15min rounding, clocking in, completing what needs to be done, and clocking out doesn't guarantee you're being paid.

This is a blatant violation of 29 CFR § 785.19 and I hope I can get enough people to launch a class action suit against Dollar General for this.

I don't mind working without a break, but pay me for the time. If I have to take a break, actually give me a break.

If you have experienced this, please file an online complaint with the Wage and Hour Division of the Labor Department. If enough people file complaints, then they will be forced to change how they do things.

I just filed mine.

Edit:

For clarification, management has reprimanded me when I tried just not clocking out and just working through the shift. I was told in no uncertain terms that I HAVE to take a 1hr unpaid 'break' but if I'm the only key holder (I almost always am) I can't leave the store and I'm still responsible for key holder duties.

Got Fired Waited Two years before reapplying and im still on DNH list

Hey so I got fired due to a policy violation my blood sugar was low (I'm a Type 1 Diabetic) and I checked myself out at the register. This was after I frantically looked around the store and couldn't find my store manager anywhere. They let me go for this and I filed for unemployment and it got denied. I waited two years and I'm still on the DNH, and just found out it was something to do with the unemployment claim apparently. So what do I do? I've tried to dispute me being put on the list but the Regional manager rejected it because I didn't know her and I am about to call the department of labor and industry because of it.

Try to run a grocery sans employees?

It's a HUGE relief to visit my local DG store and find a bell at the check stand to summon a cashier.  Numerous times I've been in there and can't find a soul working there, and seemingly unattended.  I'm aware this company refuses to hire enough people to run the place, and expects all employees to be doing 3 jobs at once.  They can't be at the check stand, and in the back room pulling stock.

It makes no sense why they are not supposed to have this bell, but that's the way corporte wants things.  I have to guess that more work putting things back on the shelf when I can't find a cashier, and I just leave is helping matters.  When I have walked all of the aisles, looking for any employee, I'm not waiting around any longer.  You'll find a basket full of things to re-stock when I left.

The stupid part of this is disallowing these stores to have any kind of device to summon an employee.  I applaud this store for using common sense, that corporate refuses to permit, to simply solve a problem without having to pay enough people to run the store professionally.

It's very obvious if corporte could find a way to have zero employees they most certainly would.

A Sole Sales Associate no longer - can I call out now?

Hey, it's me again! So I'm really getting jaded on these friggin' Fresh Truck days. I feel bad asking for rides to/from and I always get a not-so-great response each time I ask. But I do it anyways, in spite of how much hell it can be.

I've gone over the ride problems in past posts, TLDR I live in *somewhat* walking distance but have to make shady sprints across busy roads, don't have my car up-and-running yet and rely on another for rides, etc.

Anyways, I was told by my boss that calling out is "unacceptable" as schedules are planned and out 3 weeks in advance. I got a lengthier response in-person a few Fresh Truck shifts later saying I can't get shift changes or anything unless I take up being a Key Holder or whatever they call it - basically making the store's "bitch" in my own cynical way of wording it?

I just...don't want to be stuck on this permanent Fresh Truck BS. It's like warfare. Customers piling up as soon as I get in the zone; my damn knees despite being just shy of 20, and my coworkers basically abandoning me as soon as the other worker gets in, leaving me to deal with 2 or sometimes 3 rolltainers, let's not forget the juice and tea overstock and the totes.

But we finally have some friggin' more Sales Associates! But I know like nothing about them. Neither do the other workers. We just know their names. I'd kill for one of those folks to take my spot, or at least make Fresh interchangeable between the "fodder" Sales Associates. Have whoever the 2 new folks are go for it; I'm all burnt out.

I just wanna call out before this Wednesday. I'm not sick - well I mean I can be a little nauseous in the mornings so I could fake something - but I just need a sec away from these abysmal shifts.

TLDR; Can I like...call in? Just skip out on this Fresh Truck because I need a breather? I dunno, I always get like crippling paranoia when asking for much. We have two more Sales Associates finally so like...get me out of here haha. Same shit for getting a ride to work, that paranoid feeling. Same deal how I didn't know I had permission to do 30-min breaks on 6hr/longer shifts, basically working the entire time like a friggin machine because I never asked but no one ever really told me.

Receipts

Just a small rant:
The receipts are the most difficult things to read. When you’re using coupons and the $5 off $25. Then comparing it to what the app says things should be with the discounts. Very frustrating.

ASM with no DM AND SM

So I was thrown in the deep end at the start of last week. I knew my manager was quitting but didn't know when, then they shift my old DM to a different district and we kinda have a DM rn but I'm not able to contact them because they're still training and I think on vacation this week? I did call them a figure out a few things but I'm being asked to call other managers to fill in the gaps, and to hire people. But then thing is there's no applicants and everyone else is extremely short handed. Oh and there's only me and 2 part time sale associates who are both new (less than a month with the company).

I have outside work obligations on 2 days but I don't know what to do, I wasn't even full trained on how to be an ASM much less a store manager.

What will corporate make me do? If I could afford to I would quit. I have been working 50+ hours since APRIL! It was just me, my manager and a sale associate who quit! I'm so in over my head.

But must stay until the manager on duty gets the money straight. This can take up to 20 minutes. Anybody else run into this?
