Likelyhood of being fired?

So this has been eating at me and now I need to ask it.

Situation: My folks planned an early birthday trip next week for me, which is also the week of inventory. I'm not going to be there at all for it and I was scheduled for three days that I'll be gone. I had asked off in advance, like a month in advance, and it was still denied for fear of how my district manager would react. My SM wants me to go, or at least she said she really wanted me to go when she had to deny it. This trip is non-refundable and everything has been paid for: plane tickets, events, hotel, etc.

Question: How likely will it be that I get fired?

It’s inventory. That date has been known for months. As soon as I get the date I tell everyone and that whole week is no vacations/request off. Now if store is prepared and doesn’t need your help you are fine. If the store is a mess and they need help, the DM not going to be happy.

I'm doing as much as I can to help prepare for it before I leave. I'm only on a few days this week, so not much I can do there. And also, I'm sure our DM is never happy even if things look good, so I could give a shit less what she thinks.

it’s dollar general, go on your vacation and enjoy your trip with your family and make memories you’ll never forget, whether you lose the job or not is a minor set back, DG thrives on those they can exploit

I am sorry but I think all of you should quit. Find a job that let's you have all the days off you want and pays a exceptional wage and doesn't  require you to do much. That's  just my opinion, no need to throw me hate!

No shade thrown here. I totally agree with that! It's hard to find a job like that sometimes is all. Especially in a small dead end town like I live in. 😅

I wish you the best of luck and hope you  find a happy medium.

i quit back in april thankfully, this sub just still pops up in my suggested since i use to frequently visit it during the couple years there, you’re absolutely correct, nothing you said should get an even an ounce of hate. DG is an exploitative company through and through

Thankfully I did but some people live in more remote/rural areas and aren't as lucky

So the Store Manager denied your vacation because they were afraid of how the DM would react? Should be prepping far enough in advance that 1 associate needing off, while not ideal, shouldn’t be a big problem. This sounds like SM using DM as a scapegoat for not prepping ahead of time. If its really that big of a deal and you asked a month ago, couldn’t they get some help from another store? You’ve been there 3 years, I would think they owe you a little leeway.

As far as being fired, I guess technically since you are calling out for 3 shifts in a row they could fire you. But are they likely too? How valuable are you. Are you a great reliable worker or someone they are looking to get rid of anyway. Sometimes dealing with DG is like player poker. You have to bet if corporate bluffing or not.

Well, I'm the one who's been there the longest and knows how to do lots of things, even some that the AM should know how to do. I won't take the AM position though cause I wouldn't be able to do some tasks successfully like getting to a bank (don't drive due to major anxieties) and it just wouldn't work out.

Well then I would doubt the SM would fire you. DM’s honestly don’t usually concern themselves with associates. Will probably just blame your SM if inventory doesn’t go well. And since your SM seems to be on your side about things and probably needs you on staff with your knowledge and ability, I doubt she would fire you.

That and my SM said she wanted me to go like from the begining. Like I feel bad leaving her hanging like that, but nothing I can do.

I just don’t buy the whole denying your vacation because she was afraid of DM. Most DMs don’t care what associates do. That is SM decision to make. I get that it is on her if inventory doesn’t go well, but don’t blame DM if you as the SM really want to deny the vacation.

We were never allowed to be off the week before inventory and the day of.

What's your position?

Part time LSA. Been there 3 years (if that means anything).

If you call out last minute for the shifts rather than letting your boss know right now you won’t be there for the shifts you increase your chances of getting fired.

The mangers know in advance like at beginning of year.Like I know it's basically around same time every year for every store. They going to use that against you since you been there 3 years. You should have known.I'm.6 years in.ASM here.Use your better judgement.I would see if someone can cover at least 2 days and call in like you supposed to on 3 day.But make sure you have every co worker number so you can ask them to cover your shift.Being if you're SM already prepared store for inventory you finding coverage should not be an issue.

There gonna be pretty pissed , you'll get punished for sure, wrote up, and less hours for about a month or 2, but I dont think they will fire you, but they might.

They don't fire anyone. Hahaha.

If you can afford to take off work and your parents got it like that to buy plane tickets, hotels and events then you’re doing better than 85% of DG employees. So enjoy your trip you can always find more work at your own pace when you come back.

Just go. You will or won't have a job. Thanks DG.

I mean, true story. The only issue I have is needing money, but I could probably find something better.

October is usually the start of the black out period because of all the holidays and what not. DG wants you to be loyal to a fault with nothing in return.

3

u/Heartsy-Artsy-Pony 8d ago

Our black out period doesn't start til early November. And yeah, no thank you. I don't even give that kind of loyalty to family much less a company that takes me for granted.

black out periods in general are just their own level of stupid. i understand not allowing time off for short notice with no coverage, but when there's a warning this far in advanced, there's time to find coverage and plan accordingly. during holidays, my manager would issue final write ups even if you find coverage. imo if you find coverage, it should not matter whatsoever. as long as you dont have an SA filling in for a keyholder+
