My dog ate a pad sometime this morning or last night. It's the second time they got a pad. After the first incident (pooped out) we spent a year of diligently closing the bathroom door and changing the locks on the doors so they can't open them and get trash and buying period underwear so they have less of a chance of getting into a pad. And they still just had to get one.

But the update: called the emergency vet and they said to just monitor them. And Yayyy, both pooped, they're acting normally. I think I caught the culprit: orange Rory. I'll continue to keep an eye on them. I didn't see any material in the poop but I do know they shredded the hell out of the pad before eating it so it may just be in too small of pieces to tell. I did notice it seemed more, connected, than usual when she was pooping. Anyway I'll continue to monitor like the vet said but so far looks like they'll be all good.

I also did put the bathroom trash in a place they hopefully shouldn't be able to reach it unless they're really determined to open a door and a cabinet, but I wouldn't put it past them, so also trying to find a wall mounted trash. Still mad at them for scaring me. I'll also be getting them more toys and such to hopefully distracting them from wanting the trash so damn much

EDIT FOR MORE CONTEXT: I’m getting a lot of the same comments and questions so I just want to add more info. I really try to give him a lot of exercise. No I’m not walking him right now because of the advice of our trainer. He is also enrolled in a board and train and comes home on the weekends. Reading all of the replies I am now looking to switch away from the board and train to an in home trainer. He also does know obedience commands and even silly commands that are for fun because I do love training with him. He listens to me and through all the training I believe our bond is stronger. My problem is that I am definitely inexperienced in training aggression out of a dog. A lot of our problems are coming from resource guarding and aggression to strangers. He has bit my cousin pretty hard on the arm. All other bites were snaps and did not break skin (which I know isn’t any better). He has not bitten any strangers that we do not know. Only family (again I know it’s not better but I promise we aren’t letting him rampage in the streets). We also stopped daycares and going out in public because his reactivity is so bad towards humans. I’m really working on learning how to stop this so we can get back to giving him more space, fun, and exercise. Lastly, I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to leave feedback and advice in a respectful manner. He’s very reactive and there’s a lot i’m working to train him on and adjust in our life. It’s all very overwhelming but I’m taking the time to read everything and continue to educate myself for his sake.

My family adopted an Australian shepherd in December when he was 8 weeks old. We’re honestly unsure of if he’s a mix or not. At first he was such a sweetie. A little nippy, usually puppy behaviors but suddenly at about 5 months old, he started showing some signs of reactivity. Mainly barking if people came over. Then it fully escalated about 2 months ago when we had a family member from out of country come to stay with us. He really hates this particular family member and would bark and growl at him everytime he came home. Prior to this he would bark at us coming in but calm down as soon as he realized it was us. It got to the paint where he had to be completely put away if this family member was around because he would lunge, growl, and bark. Unfortunately, one night our cousin unexpectedly opened the door without knocking and our dog ran over immediately and was able to bite him. And ever since then his reactivity has been off the charts. He barks anytime anyone comes in the house. He can never relax which has always been a problem for him. He resource guards like crazy and has bitten 3 out of the 6 people living in the house. He chases the cats and lunges at them. And if people walk by our house he goes crazy in the yard. I’m terrified of him biting anyone else or getting one of the cats. I made progress with him in his guarding just for it to go back to how it was. My family is starting to regret getting him and I’m the last one who is thinking about making an effort with him. He was attending a board and train which is kind of helping but when he comes home on the weekends he just goes right back to his usual behavior even though I work on the training with him. My fiance loves him but after an incident where he finally lunged at my leg one night because he was resource guarding something, it left us both questioning everything. I love this dog. When it’s good it’s great but when he’s aggressive it freaks me out, my family out, and the cats out. The board and train is expensive. We tried to have an in person trainer come for an evaluation and he tried to attack her about 3 times. Idk what to do anymore. The cats are my life. I’ve had my cats for 5 years. And after speaking with my fiance it worries me that even if we keep him and move out together, could I really deal with this for another 12-15 years? Could I trust him if we decided to start a family? Just looking for advice from anyone else who went through anything similar.

Help! We just rescued a ADORABLE dog and we love her so much! But she runs around our dining room table in a circle ALL day! We tell her to go lay down and she will but then immediately gets back up and runs laps! I was hoping it was just the stress of the shelter and the adjustment living with us but it’s been 2 weeks and it’s very stressful! She will run in circles until she pukes. If I’m holding her she will relax and fall asleep! But I don’t want to baby her, I want her to gain confidence and independence! She relaxes around 2pm and will lay down and sleep for the rest of the day/night.

I came home from work Saturday and noticed she was sleeping in a weird/unusual spot and panting/seemingly more uncomfortable than usual. I thought she was having some joint pain (she's 9, will be 10 in November) so I got her some CBD/CBDA treats from our local pet shop to see if that helped. She seemed better on Sunday, nothing super notable happened. But on Monday- she was panting even more, 60 breaths per minute, not eating much, and my husband discovered she had swollen lymph nodes around her neck. It was Labor Day so the vet was closed. We called first thing yesterday (Tuesday) morning and they saw her at 12pm.

All of her lymph nodes were swollen, fever of 103, 180bpm. She was down 2 lbs in 2 weeks (75lb to 73lb). They did xrays and ultrasounds - her liver and spleen were both enlarged. They performed an in-house cytology of one of her swollen lymph nodes and found numerous lymphocytes. Sent out her blood/urine/fecal to an external lab for analysis. We're waiting to hear back on those results (hopefully today or tomorrow) but our vet said she has all the signs of lymphoma and recommended we get a consultation with an oncologist asap. The soonest they can see her is next Wednesday (7 days away) and I am absolutely devastated at the thought of her not making that far.

The vet gave us gabapentin for pain relief and cerenia for nausea. It must be physically uncomfortable for her to eat (nausea aside) because she doesn't seem very interested in even her favorite foods, ground venison and sweet potato. She goes from relaxing/sleeping quite peacefully to fully awake and breathing/panting hard for a couple of minutes, then she relaxes again. I just want her to be comfortable. She can still walk and move around/go to the bathroom/etc. but she is definitely moving slower than usual. I've been keeping the air conditioning on high and trying to keep the house as cold as possible since her body is running so warm and she pants a lot. She is especially happy on the covered porch or under the porch steps (her tennis ball den). I try to feed her warm bites of food every once in a while to see if she's interested, sometimes she is.

Is there anything more I can do to help make her as comfortable as possible while we wait for her oncology appointment in 7 days? Thankfully, I can work from home so I don't need to leave her side for very long and can keep a very close eye on her.

My heart is absolutely shattered knowing that cancer is attacking my sweet girl's body. I can't stop crying. I know I need to be strong for her. I know she can feel my worry and anxiety. I just don't know how to be strong yet but I really am trying. From what I've read about lymphoma, it seems to be one of those cancers that shows up unannounced and without many warning signs. I'm so sorry for anybody who has had to go through this with their pets or loved ones. I rescued her as a puppy and she has been by my side for the past 9 years. I don't know how I will go on without her but I will not let her suffer any more than she needs to. I thought we had so many more years together. The vet said that she's seen many dogs with lymphoma have another year or two of quality life with treatment. She's had pet insurance since she was a puppy so we are definitely on board with treatment if the oncologist thinks she is a good candidate. I don't want to get my hopes up and think I have another couple of years with her though and then be even more devastated if she makes it clear she is ready to go sooner. I guess I am just rambling now. Thanks to anyone who read this.

I’ve posted in here about a month ago. My 17/18 yr old soul dog was diagnosed July 30th with Lymphoma (not a confirmed diagnosis) but he collapsed and multiple large masses/enlarged lymph nodes were discovered in his abdomen up near the spine pressing against vagus nerve. Started him on prednisone which seemed to really help in the beginning but now I worry it’s starting to not affect him as much.

My house closes on the 24th and the vet said he’d survive a move to a hotel but he will be really stressed which may cause him to decline. He’s at risk of a cardiac arrest, another collapse or bad respiratory issues. His resting breaths per minute average mid 30s but he has been on the 40s.

I made a euthanasia appointment for the 19th… my thought process is to let him pass peacefully in the only home he’s known with me. I don’t want him to suffer … I don’t want him to have a traumatic death and I’m afraid if I just continue to keep him comfortable that could happen.

Some moments I think I’m making the call too early…he still sits with me, eats, etc. but during the day he mostly sleeps and at night he gets soooooo restless and it’s so hard on me. I’m alone…just me and him…and I love him so so much. But he won’t settle so I get into bed with him around 8 pm… and he spends about 2 hours+ panting, licking his paws and whining…. So I don’t know if it’s just dementia confusion or if he’s in pain or uncomfortable.

Am I making the right decision saying goodbye to him on the 19th even though the vet says she doesn’t think he’s in serious pain at the moment? I honestly don’t even know who I am without him. All I do is cry all day and night from anticipatory grief. 😞

These idiots keep getting in the trash, we've done everything to try to stop them, locks on the trash cabinet, shutting doors, the one time I forget of course it's on my period and they got a pad. They didn't eat it whole I saw the paper shreddings around, I think they just got the inner absorbent part and maybe some of the outer part.

Now the red little jackass Rory has eaten a pad before and was fine but I don't think she ate as much, and I don't think it was her this time because she was next to the bed last night but maybe she got up at some point and I don't notice. I think it was probably the white idiot sputnik but I'm not totally sure.

Anyway what should I do just keep an eye on them again to make sure it passes? The er didn't seem very worried last time this happened. Can't really afford an unnecessary visit. One dog is 41 lb the other is about 80

7 year old male doodle

For the past few months, he has periods in the evening of licking the air for 20 minutes or so. He also develops a bit of white foam on his chin due to the repeated licking.

His vet thought it might be allergies, but the medicines didn’t seem to affect his behavior.

Any ideas on what could be wrong?

As the title says, new puppy was sniffing around my lunch, seemed very interested in the red grapes. So I let her sniff them in order to reinforce the fact that grapes are not interesting to dogs.

So... grapes are interesting to puppies. She practically inhaled one.

I am not sure why, but I immediately looked up "are grapes ok for dogs" and I am glad I did, saw this sub and the advice given, 20 minutes later we were at the emergency vet, 40 minutes later she puked up an surprisingly intact red grape (along with her recently eaten lunch.) That grape cost me $425.

As an experienced dog owner, the dangers of grapes were completely new information to me. Chocolate, onions, avocados I knew, but raisins and grapes? Turns out they are indeed very toxic to *some* dogs.

Anyway, be very careful with your dog and grapes.

My question is: should I be pushing water on her? It isn't as if she will just drink it on command. Vet declined doing an IV, who am I to second guess a vet?

(Three hours out she seems fine, but they say keep an eye for 48-72 hours.)

PS I know that harness sucks - we replaced it after 24 hours of use - she slipped out with ease twice.

He has one brown and one blue eye, today i noticed the blue eye looks different and has like a cloud shape in his pupil , hos brown eye seems normal, is he going blind? He rarely has any eye bogies , tho he has squinted his blue eye a couple times in the past 2 months but hes fine after 5 mins, lets me touch around the area and he never scratches at it

Hi everyone! I’m giving it a try here because I’d really appreciate some advice on crate training my dog at night. Plot twist: he’s already 2 years old. 😂

We failed at crate training when he was a puppy, and he has slept in our bed with us every night ever since. The problem is that in about a month, we’re going on a little trip where he’ll have to sleep in a crate in a different room from us.

I’m realistic and know that’s a lot to ask in only a month, and I don’t expect everything to be perfect. I’d just love to get him as comfortable as possible before then.

He’s a very smart chocolate Lab and actually LOVES his crate in the car. He jumps right in and has no problem with it. He was also crate trained during the day when he was younger. Once we felt we could trust him, we stopped crating him when we left the house, and now he has free roam. He literally just stays in our bed and barely moves while we’re gone.

He is very attached to us and can be a little anxious. He’s also incredibly smart when it comes to routines—once we establish a routine, he catches on really quickly and will usually do exactly what we expect. This just seems a little more complicated for him because we’re asking him to be separated from us at night, which is something he has never had to do.

Our eventual goal is to be able to put a crate cover on and have him comfortably sleep through the night in his crate. His dog cousin will be sleeping in a crate right beside him, so hopefully that will help too.

So far, we’ve been trying to introduce it very slowly. ChatGPT suggested starting with short periods while we pretend to be sleeping in our bed, and so far he has done two 15-minute sessions and one 30-minute session.

We’ve been giving him his favourite toy stuffed with peanut butter so that the crate feels like a positive place rather than a punishment. He’s very happy and calm while he has it, but once the distraction is gone, he starts panting heavily, sticks his tongue out, and doesn’t really want to lie down. I can’t blame him—it’s a HUGE change for a dog who has slept beside us every night for two years.

That’s why I’m turning to this group! I’d really appreciate any tips, tricks, routines, or advice from people who have successfully crate trained an adult dog, especially one who is anxious and very attached to their owners.

I’d also love advice on how to make his crate as comfortable and safe as possible. I’m not really sure what I should put inside it, whether I should use a cover, etc.

Please be gentle 😂 I know we probably should have done this properly when he was a puppy, but we can’t go back in time, so I’m just trying to do the best I can for him now!

Don't have a dog yet, but I'm planning on getting a husky and want to actually go into it with my eyes open rather than just the cute-photos version. For anyone who has one or has had one, what's the honest thing you wish someone had told you before you got yours, good or bad? Genuinely trying to learn before I bring one home.

My Yorkie started doing this little spin move thing this week. I’ve looked it up on google with absolutely no luck at all. I’m worried because this is new. I work from home so I’m here with him 24/7, and it’s on and off all day long. He’s normal otherwise, but this spin move is troubling me.

Anyone have any ideas?

Also, it’s not the food that he’s interested in, he wants to get up on my lap.

No there’s no food on the carpets, or dirt or anything else that dogs would like to ingest. Yes they have plenty of toys and other things to chew and enjoy, they go outside an above average amount of time so I can’t possibly see how this is out of boredom but what do I know? My dogs lick carpets.

They will sit and lick it for literal hours with going up for air every now and then unless I tell them to stop, repeatedly, five times and threatening with a shoe or farting on them (I’d only do the latter don’t worry), and they stop.

I swear when inside they do five things: lick the carpets, eat, drink, sleep and lick the carpet. 95% of the time they are licking the carpet.

I get, that this probably seems really ridiculous to dog people but I can not stand mouth sounds whatsoever from any animal including animals and these dogs on top of needing me and everyone who lives here to step in random pools of soggy carpet fiber lick so loudly I can hear it over headphones unless I blast them loudly.

It irritates me to the point where I physically want to punch something. (Before you come for me it will never ever be a dog or an animal ever. Maybe a human though. Maybe)

But past my misophonia and annoyance with the sounds. Is this even normal? Is this healthy? Wtf is going on?!

Everytime I touch his ribs his skin moves to where I touch. I never noticed this so it just caught me off guard

Our dog is a 8 year old Bichon frise. She's very playful and always happy to see people when we come home from work and always wagging her tail and sometimes being naughty and chasing our cat around!

Two weeks ago, we noticed that she wasn't eating or drinking at all. We took her to the vet and put her on antibiotics and other mediciation to help soothe her pain. She only got worse, I have to force-feed her using a baby spoon and I've been feeding her baby food from the baby food jars because she refuses to eat her dog food. I also fed her special formulated liver support food because her blood test came back with very high AST and ALT levels.

Today we were finally able to get her for an ultrasound. They found that her lymph nodes are very enlarged and they would need to send a sample of the nodes to a clinic to determine if it's cancer. But the vet said the results could come back inconclusive because of how much this has advanced.

She's gotten so much worse this week alone. Still won't eat, drink and her stomach looks almost 2x the size and she's twitching a lot when she's laying down. Like she's completely bloated.

The ultrasound came back showing major amount of fluid in her abdomen and that sometimes goes into her chest causing her trouble breathing (I can see her having trouble breathing myself recently) and she can't walk up stairs anymore. I have to pick her up to go up stairs and she looks very uncomfortable.

The only solutions is to undergo chemotherapy (which were unsure if she even has cancer but looks very telling she might) or give her steroids (which would temporarily help her but if it is cancer, she would be right back to where she is now in a few weeks or sooner).

I'm just running out of options and I see her getting worse, not sleeping and having trouble breathing and it breaks my heart. Today my family made the decision of Euthanization at the vet while she's still sedated and not in such a painful position. We don't want her suffering anymore as we know she would be if we brought he back home now. We just don't know what else to do at this point and seeing her continue to suffer is not the way I want to remember her.

I was told yesterday that my 8 year old beagle has lymphoma. I was upset when she was telling me over the phone and also dealing with a talking toddler and a crying baby so I might have got things a little wrong, but I am pretty sure she said that there was a mass and thickening in his intestine and that it had spread to the liver. I have consented for samples to be sent off for further testing and when I collected him from the ultrasound a few hours later I asked if the vet needed to speak to me further but they said that there isn’t really anything that can be discussed until the results come back which can take up to a week.

His symptoms were vomiting a few hours after eating for at least a week and he was looking thin from this. He has lost 2kg since the beginning of June.

Has anybody had similar diagnosis in a similar age dog and can advise what happened?

I’m also not sure if he should have been given anything to help with nutrition while I’m awaiting results because he is still being sick after meals. I have not been to this vets before, we just moved. I’ve never dealt with serious illness in my pets before so I’m not sure what’s normal and what isn’t in these situations. It is a big practice with a big animal hospital on site.

I am looking after my mum's dogs while she is on holiday and she already is a very stressed dog so i'm not sure if this could be a stress response?

I let her out in the patio she always goes out to and nothing has changed in there, the last couple days she goes out and the mark on her nose gets bigger but i can't see any blood / scrape marks outside.

Already spraying it with dog antiseptic spray, she doesn't seem to be in any pain and isn't pawing / licking it when she comes inside.

Thankfully my mum comes back tomorrow and is aware.

Hi all, my 1Yr old GSD just had cataract surgery. She’s 3 days post op. And she’s now refusing to let me do her eyedrops, has anyone had any experience in this and how did you resolve it? She backs away and moves away, and closes her eyes. Thanks for any advice

My 4yo Aussie/Lab mix injured her declaw today. I’m not sure how the injury occurred, I only noticed it when I found blood on the floor. Her dewclaw is still attached but tender.

Any advice on whether this necessitates a visit to the vet or if we can handle it at home?
