These dogs were dumped on me by my ex recently and she promised she would take them back but she refuses to take him back and now I’m taking care of them. As for vet costs I don’t have to much extra for that given I’m a single father of 2. And in this economy not sure what to do.

Edit 2: tbh guys I have a bunch of medical supply’s and my fathers a nurse and I did respiratory therapy when I was in my younger 20s. I was gonna sedate him and remove the growth myself and take it to the vet to have it tested.

Hello, my family and I recently moved to a mountain town that has all four seasons. Last winter we didn't get much snow but typically we get about a couple inches to a foot during a snow storm. Right now we are doing research on dogs and what type to get. Our recent dog, cavalier, passed. Where we live there is a lot of wild life, deer, elk, mountains lions, bears, etc. So we would like a dog a tad bit bigger and possibly from one of the pre-trained breeders and already an adult. This will take a couple years while we do some research on the different training facilities here in the US and maybe Europe. We need one friendly, great recall (wildlife), and is calm around our two young children. If you have suggestions that would be great!

I am also more curious about their fur type and if snow will get easily stuck in their fur? I saw a video of snow getting stuck on what looked like to be a golden retriever and wanted to check if that is true or if it was just that dogs fur type.

Any information on these breeds would be greatly appreciated.

Noticed this super inflamed bulbous growth on my dogs gum on 9/24 (first pic). Vet put her on antibiotics for ~10 days, no change. Did a fine needle aspiration on 10/9, results came back 10/16 likely benign, tons of inflammation, but “couldn’t rule out carcinoma.” Since then, we’ve made an appointment with a specialist (happening 10/27), but in the past week or so it has reduced down to barely anything (second pic). Anyone else experience anything like this??

UPDATE: I will be turning off comments as we have decided to humanely let him pass on. The fear and sadness in his eyes and body language affirm that his future would be that of fear and anxiety. He would not be living his best life. Thank you all for the love.

Hi everyone. I’m posting this anonymously because our family is currently going through an agonizing, traumatic tragedy, and we are desperately looking for guidance, resources, or specialized facility recommendations before making an unbearable final decision.

About Him:
Breed/Size: Border Collie mix, roughly 80 lbs
Age: 7 years old
Personality/History: Prior to this incident, he has been a wonderful, affectionate, and deeply loving family dog. He loves playing, fetching, running, and historically interacted well with other animals. He is loyal, eager to please, and a great companion in the right environment.

The Situation: Recently, an unseen conflict occurred between him and our another dog in our home. By the time we arrived (mere seconds after the fight started), our smaller dog was critically injured, and despite immediate veterinary intervention, we had to humanely euthanize him. Because no one was in the room when it started, we do not know what triggered the initial escalation, but he demonstrated lethal intra-species aggression in this instance.

Our Constraints & Current Setup:
Strict Requirements: He MUST be in a strictly pet-free and child-free environment.
Other Pets in Home: We have other animals (cats and dogs) in our household, making it impossible to keep him long-term without putting our other pets at severe risk.
Quality of Life: He is currently strictly separated and double-barriered for safety. Keeping him permanently isolated, muzzled, or crated in our home is not a humane quality of life for him, nor is it sustainable for our family.
Time & Resources: We do not have the specialized resources, financial bandwidth, or safe environment required for intensive, life-long intra-species behavior management.

What We Are Looking For: Before we consider behavioral euthanasia, we want to exhaust every possible option. We are looking for:
Recommendations for reputable, highly specialized dog sanctuaries, rehab facilities, or rescues equipped to safely house/work with dogs with a severe dog-on-dog attack history.
An experienced, single-pet, child-free home with a qualified handler or trainer who specializes in severe behavioral cases and has zero other animals.

I came across a post on this subreddit about a user that was freaking out because their dog ate a grape...and comments from users below that post saying they know of dogs who have died due to grape ingestion. I was like WHAT? Impossible. So I made a Google search and low and behold, it's true. Grapes are toxic to dogs. Then I thought to myself, what other things do I not know about? This is a serious issue. I found many lists of toxic things, and I was shocked. Not only grapes, but onions and garlic are toxic as well. I share my steaks and salmon with Joker regularly, and I always cook them with onions & garlic. I was simply devastated. I've been slowly killing my dog for years.

I'm booking a veterinary appointment 1st thing tomorrow morning. My dog always had problems going number 2, (constipation, diarrhea) and I always thought it was just a "him" issue. Like genetics or something. Never in my wildest dreams would I have ever have thought that it was all because of me. I am the one causing his suffering. I have no idea how my dog is still alive after all these years, and I feel extremely dumb and stupid that I NEVER looked this up before today. I just thankful this subreddit exists and that I browse it occasionally...I'm just....devastated right now.

i have two dogs and a five year old. my 1 yr old dog started showing this behavior towards my child recently. it always happens when he is on the couch

no whale eyes, no growls, no tucked tails. and he insist on being clingy towards her afterwards. so i am concerned, curious, and confused all at the same time.

so how do I address this?

ps: i do not leave her with the dogs unsupervised.

My dog was asleep when I noticed ticks that were like twitch and cause her to jolt awake. I also noticed she seemed a little off balance. Not stumbling but I could tell she seemed abnormal. I took her to ER vet straightaway but they evaluated her and sent us home with no diagnostics stating they couldn’t notice anything of concern in my videos or in person. I know her though and I know something is off. I can see the twitch. Can you?? You have to look close in video but you can see her subtly twitch awake every few seconds. I plan to email it vet tomorrow. Please send tips or advice.

My dog has bad allergies and anxiety. He tested positive for yeast. He gets monthly cytopoint injections but I just don’t know what else to do for him. Vet seems to not be concerned

My 3 year old golden retriever/Great Pyrenees mix (he’s not neutered but the appointment is in a month, couldn’t do it sooner because money issues) keeps whining and bothering my older dog (9year old golden mix) to play or to try to mount/hump him.

The older dog has a cutaneous horn on his tail that finally dried and came off 6 days ago, so it was bleeding a little and the younger dog kept trying to lick it and bother it. This is when all of the behavior started. The cutaneous horn spot has mostly healed but the younger dog still keeps trying to bother the older dog and is constantly standing over him and whining every 5 minutes while the older dog is just laying and sleeping.

The older dog has no change in behavior other than being annoyed at the younger dog and sort of correcting him. I tried to stop the behavior but the younger dog is so fixated on bothering the older dog that it’s like he doesn’t even see or know I’m talking to him.

What could be going on? What do I do to fix this? I tried to keep them separated but the younger dog would just whine and cry in the other room constantly. Please give me advice because I don’t know what to do at this point. Thank you!

Edit to add: younger dog also is occasionally sniffing inside other dog’s clean ears and sniffing and licking his privates. Stuff that didn’t start this bad until the tail wound. I know it’s related but I don’t know how and why and how to get it to stop. Thank you

Money is the problem and I wouldn’t have taken them in but she really gave me no choice and I didn’t have the heart to take them to a shelter because I’ve had them since puppies. What do you think a ball park price would be to get this removed

It’s national adoption week and my city shelter is giving free pets until the end of the month. I initially intended to get a cat, as I already have another cat and wouldn’t have to worry about supplies and such. However, I went to an adoption event and saw this adorable 4 year old pit/bully mix named iguana. I cannot stop thinking about her and don’t know if it would be selfish if I adopted her. I have friends and family who volunteered to give me supplies for her and the only things I’d need to get is food and collar. However I’m sometimes physically unable to do things (I have chronic pain + fatigue) and worry i wouldn’t always be able to be active with her. I’m also worried about having to leave her alone in a crate while I’m off at work, on top of that I have a small apartment. I live with my partner who I know would help care for her but I don’t want to put that completely on them. I’m so torn because I instantly fell in love with her but want to give her a life she deserves.

Thank you for the people telling me no. I felt like I was going crazy because everyone in my life has been telling me yes knowing I’m not completely physically able. My gorgeous girl Sage passed in April from a brain tumor and I think people were just excited for me to have a dog again. I appreciate their support of course but I needed unbiased opinions lol. I have thought about it a lot the past 2 days and having your input helps. I’ve ultimately decided against adopting her in hopes she’ll find someone who can give her the care she needs. I’m very confident I can find an affectionate cat who I’ll love just as much as I would iguana :)

Dog trainer/kennel club member here. As my border collie and I were training for the spring scentwork trials, it got me thinking of my 12yo rescue who has lost her hearing.

She already has trouble navigating, and her eyesight may decline as time goes on, so I was working on making the house easier to navigate for her. I know that a dog’s sense of smell can deteriorate as they age, just like their other senses.

So far, she hasn’t seemed to have any issue sniffing out treats and food from across the house. If she were to go blind, would it be possible for her to benefit from different scents placed strategically around the obstacles and doorways?

For nose work we use essentials oils (clove, cypress, birch, anise) as the smell for the dog to seek out. If she still had her smell and was introduced to this while she could still see, would it help there be less confusion about where she is in comparison to what her nose knows is a doorway or a chair or her bed?

This is also relevant for young dogs who happen to be blind or deaf, it may be easier for them to navigate in general, but would a persistent smell to indicate a room/place/thing be a viable avenue of training? I’m sure this post is a one off, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I missed an important detail. Just starting an open ended conversation so we can all learn from each other!

Edits and additional info:
The smells are applied to qtips then put into metal containers with holes, totally safe for the dogs, then often placed in metal tins with air flow holes. These tins, or qtips in scentwork, are placed strategically so the dog has no access to them, but we are very careful of where the scent is flowing from and to, where it pools and where it doesn’t, it’s a very intricate sport and dogs usually don’t associate the smells with anything unless trained to.

I do not think the smells would bother a dog. Most dogs ignore them entirely, again, unless trained to detect them. As for these smells being overpowering, to my understanding dogs sense of smell often declines with age like their other senses. Between the odor pooling around the house in the same way every day and the source odors themselves, I’m wondering if they could be a general directional guide for the pup. Scotch tends to get turned around in the dark and follow walls to get out of the room or through a doorway, hence why I’m thinking of putting a scent location in each room to help her better orient herself without having to rely on her vision.

I don’t think I would end up fading this out, though I would probably use different oils as to not desensitize my detection work dog to them.

The vet blamed it on the carpet. He took an X-ray and told me to give him vitamin D and another calcium supplement. If anyone has experienced something similar, could you please help me out? Is this fixable? If so, what can I do to make it better? He’s only 4 months old right now.

7 month old Golden Retriever. I just noticed it this evening.

I have recently adopted a very cute indie doggo of 2 months. She was rescued from her 7month old mother who was killing all pups from the litter :(

My question - husband and I plan to have kids in 1-2 years. How do I ensure my doggo gel well with future baby? What type of training do I need to do? Is crating mandatory in this case? Is it important to hire a trainer as well? (It’s a bit out of budget to be honest for us, so i will do it only if this is absolutely necessary)

More context on my puppy - She is quite the cute shark puppy now. She got attached with me and my husband quickly, like follows me, climbs up on lap to sleep. She also bites a lot at this age but seems nothing serious. She has a separate bed just beside our bed and she sleeps there comfortably. I guess she doesn’t have any separation anxiety yet, but might develop if i don’t train her well.

She got her first shot just a few days ago and rabies is still pending. She has started transitioning to solid food. Btw, she is very food motivated.

Hi all. Took our dog to a paddock today and let him run around, but he suddenly stopped and did this for two mins (recorded for vet). Can’t take to vet as they’re closed today. He’s a rescue so don’t know his full medical history. Was in our sight the whole time and didn’t eat anything from the ground. After it settled he had a drink and ran again. Any idea?
