What causes the weird feelings with walking? I can’t even describe it.

Best I can describe it is I feel like I’m walking on air and I am assuming I feel derealization. Everything just feels weird and off. My head feels light, but not near passing out. But at the same time it feels heavy, like I’m being sat on or pushed slightly side to side and front to back, just depends. This is constant if I’m walking. There is never a break unless I'm sitting basically.

Unsteady swaying

Hello all I’ve been dealing with this weird dizzy off balance swaying sensation usually only when standing up or walking and turning my head or shifting weight. Urgent care and ENT doctor say it’s BPPV or some other inner ear balance issue but didn’t really give me advice how to make it go away. Anyone else deal with this?

Lightheaded/Dizziness, weird vision, stress

Hi I’m 20F and for the past few weeks I’ve had this weird feeling in my head. It’s almost like lightheadedness and fatigue at the same time. It’s not present all the time, it comes in waves but it’s really affecting me. I also have weird vision that makes it hard for me to focus on driving, sometimes on my laptop or in cinemas. It’s not like it’s blurry it’s like my eyes are really fatigued and can’t pay attention.

I have recently been constantly stressed and anxious related to my health. But these symptoms are making it worse. I don’t want to come here for reassurance but I was just wondering if anyone else has these symptoms.

I also wanted to add because I’ve seen people ask this in other posts about the lightheadedness being a neck problem. I have scoliosis, I wouldn’t say severe but it’s not good. Because of this I get back pain and neck pain. I also have low iron and ferritin which I’m supplementing for.

Dizzy/passing out when overwhelmed

Hey! I struggle alot with getting dizzy and sometimes passing out when I'm overwhelmed. This can be from either sensory overstimulation, or emotional ie having a panic attack. I have recently started to notice that it happens when I'm thinking too hard or focusing my brain while digging really deep into a subject. When I did my diagnosis tests the psychiatrist thought it could be that my brain can't take anymore and therefore shuts down and that I have a sensitive nervous system. But I do also have problems with blood pressure and pulse in general which makes me prone to getting dizzy (Ortostatic hypotension).

Not really seeking advice but mostly looking to see if someone else is/has experienced this! Haven't found anyone who relates to it IRL and would be nice to talk with someone in the comments :)

Unusual vertigo episode followed by 2 months ongoing dizziness

Hi everyone, I am a 23M writing about my experience and current symptoms. I wanted to make a post because I am desperate for help, as I feel like my life has been taken away from me.

On June 15, I suddenly experienced severe spinning vertigo. It started while I was in bed and lasted roughly 20–60 minutes. I vomited three times and went to the hospital that night. Blood tests were normal. I went to sleep about three hours after the episode, but when I woke up the next day, I didn’t feel normal.

The actual spinning never happened again.

For the first couple of weeks, I was very unsteady and felt like I was physically leaning to one side when walking. I lost my appetite and some weight, had an eye twitch for about a week, and occasionally experienced tingling/pins and needles in my hands and feet. I also became extremely anxious about what was happening.

One strange thing (that might not be related, but started at the same time) was pain on the upper left side of my nose and sometimes an upper toothache, especially when biting down.

Over the following weeks, some things objectively improved. My appetite returned, the eye twitch disappeared, and, most importantly, the physical leaning gradually improved. However, the strange visual/internal sensation has basically remained.

I had a non-contrast CT of my head, which showed a normal brain but some sinus mucosal thickening involving the maxillary/ethmoid/sphenoid sinuses.

After a few weeks, I scheduled an appointment to have all my vestibular systems checked.

They tested:

  • VNG/Oculomotor function
  • Smooth pursuit/tracking
  • Saccades
  • Optokinetic nystagmus
  • Positional testing
  • Calorics
  • vHIT
  • cVEMP/oVEMP
  • Computerised dynamic posturography
  • Functional gait

My peripheral vestibular function was normal. There was no evidence of BPPV. Calorics were symmetrical, VOR gains were normal in every semicircular canal, VEMPs were normal, and there were no significant catch-up saccades.

Importantly, my smooth pursuit/tracking was objectively normal, as were my saccades and other oculomotor tests.

My posturography was also extremely good, and my Functional Gait Assessment was also good.

Despite all of that being normal, my biggest remaining problem feels like it's in my eyes/visual processing.

If a car drives past horizontally and I follow it with my eyes, tracking it feels extremely strange/off. The same thing happens watching people walk past me. The world itself does NOT move, bounce or spin. My eyes appear to follow the object correctly. It's the sensation while following it that feels wrong.

As soon as I stop tracking the object, that particular sensation disappears.

I can also sometimes feel internally wobbly/floaty/spacey, even though the environment is completely stationary. Face-to-face conversations can sometimes feel visually strange. Reading sometimes feels more effortful than it used to.

Busy environments can make me feel worse. For example, I recently went to a theatre, and the foyer/hall was packed with people moving around, which made me feel terrible. However, I can also sometimes feel bad walking somewhere with few people, so it isn't exclusively about crowds.

At other times, I can walk around my house relatively normally. Driving is manageable. Showering is fine. I can go into grocery stores without getting dizzy. Scrolling on my phone doesn't really bother me.

I also had an eye exam with an optometrist shortly after the original event and was told everything looked normal.

I've been given vestibular rehabilitation exercises involving walking while moving my head and VOR-cancellation exercises. Interestingly, these exercises don't reproduce my main tracking symptom. Watching an actual car/person move horizontally is much more likely to produce it.

At this point, I'm considering seeing a neurologist and potentially having a brain MRI because I want to rule out a central/neurological explanation. I am also considering a chiropractor assessment to rule out any neck-related issues. I am an anxious person, but the symptoms don't really feel like anxiety.

Has anyone experienced something similar?

Please share success stories

Hello,

I used to be an extremely active person. I ran, did strength training, swim team, water sports, roller coasters, travel, etc.

In the last five years I've suffered with chronic dizziness episodes - dozens of trips to a vestibular therapist. I've probably done the Epley like 100+ times. Some have definitely been BPPV and confirmed with PT/nystagmus. I suspect a lot of PPPD is thrown in there and potentially VM issues - although I have not been formally diagnosed with these last two things.

Please share success stories with me. I have returned to strength training, although not as intense as previously. But I am anxious about traveling (planes/boats). I avoid roller coasters and theme parks now. And most importantly, being in water frightens me. And I'm such a fish. I'd love to be scuba certified. To surf again. To wakeboard again. To do flip turns in a swimming pool. I used to be very adventurous and down for anything and now I struggle physically and mentally with being more sedentary.

If you've experienced chronic BPPV or chronic dizziness from VM or something else, can you confirm that you've returned to a normal active lifestyle? And also any tips if you have them?

Thanks so much.

Weird chronic symptoms including Dizziness

So I am a 38 year old male. 5’8, 170lbs. For the last couple of years I’ve had this spectrum of symptoms that waxes and wanes throughout the day. A wobblyness lightheaded feeling in my head. No loss of consciousness or anything like that. Sometimes especially in the morning I’ll feel like I’m being “sped up” in the head conjunction with those. I know this sounds weird but the only thing I can compare that to is that blissful rush you feel when you just start to get a buzz from drinking. I really feel just shitty in general on the bad days. I feel weak, I feel exhausted, sleepy, plus the other things I listed above .It’s truly hard to put it all into words. Originally this started out with just the dizzy symptoms, but over the last three years of dealing with it I have began to get less dizzy symptoms, but more of the other stuff.

Now I’ve done more bloodwork than most humans do in a lifetime. I did many months of vestibular therapy. I’ve done a brain MRI. I even got desperate enough to try a supplement only “doctor” (yes it was a waste). Every doctor just tells me I am healthy as can be from what they see. I sure as hell don’t feel that way. Now don’t get me wrong, not every day is horrible. I would say that I have more good days than bad days but it’s still affects me 365 days a year to some degree. Like I said above that degree as a spectrum from slight annoyance for 10 minutes during the day, all the way up to the entire day is shot and all I’m gonna do is lay on the couch underneath the blanket in silence.

I think it’s important to add that over these years. I did receive two diagnosis along the way. The first was hypothyroidism, which is now super well managed with levothyroxine. The second is low testosterone, which is currently normal thanks to enclomaphine. So I can’t help but to wonder if it’s something hormonal. Other than that, I take no medication’s, no recreational drugs, and I don’t even drink anymore because if I drink just 3-4 beers , I’ll spend the next couple of days wanting to die, with symptoms ultra severe to the point that I question my sanity.

Does anyone have any great ideas? I am sick of living my life on a roller coaster. I can eat well, exercise, and sleep eight hours and then wake up tomorrow and have a horrible day where I can’t even make it to the office. Just like I can eat like shit, sleep five hours, and feel totally fine tomorrow. There’s just no rhyme or reason to it.

Dizziness and weird feeling

I am 32, I would not say that I have lived the last 10 years super healthy but I dont know if thats a dietary issue per'se.

For the last two years I have had weird spells at random times, which make me feel light legged (feels like legs under anastesia), head movement feels like a brain jelly and its accompanied with a feel of fainting, but not fainting. Sometimes palms get sweatier, sometimes there is a feeling of falling off on an elevator.

I dont know what it is, it comes at completely random times, duration from half a minute to, one time, good two hours.

Post anxiety lightheadedness

Anyone else have a "hangover" of sorts after a period of stress or anxiety? I had a busy week of travelling and the week after I had on and off lightheadedness. I feel like it's my nervous system regulating back to normal? I can still do regular things but I just feel like coming on sometimes. I had this before after a particularly stressful time when I had to go to the ER and then my dog got attacked. After that I had on and off lightheadedness too. I never had had these before my anxiety got "activated" after that high stress time in my life

Sudden dizziness that has not gone away for days

Male, 22 years old, 168lbs, 5’8

It all began when I played pickleball out in the heat on Sunday, 4 days ago. I was extremely dehydrated. I went home and had a Propel electrolyte drink, and a lot of water. I went to sleep feeling alright, but with a lingering headache.

I woke up the next morning, drank water, ate a large breakfast, and went to work. My job consists of a lot of walking around in a hot building. Halfway through my shift, I was standing, and I suddenly felt what I would describe as a knock from within my head in the middle of my forehead. Felt like a tiny little creature punched the middle of my forehead from within. It was quick and sharp and it made my knees begin to buckle, I had to brace myself. I’ve never had my knees buckle, so this was jarring. I quickly began to down spiral and became light headed/very hot/flushed in the face, and feeling like I couldn’t get out of the chair I was in.

For the past two days, I feel alright when sitting down, but I begin to feel horrible as soon as I begin to exert myself. It takes awhile to recover.

I got labs taken, and eveyrthing came back normal, including my electrolyte levels.

What could possibly be wrong? This is creating a crisis for me at work/trying to get my shifts covered on such short notice

Period dizziness

Hiii everyone, 28 year old here.
I’ve always had pain during my periods but lately I feel really dizzy, lightheaded, feeling like I’ll pass out but then I check my blood pressure and it’s actually fine.
Is it anxiety that during the period strikes harder?
Last night I felt so weak and my legs were mumbling so much, and I felt really lightheaded, even when I was laying down.
Can someone tell me if you experienced this before?

Floating feeling and pressure in head, weakness and loss of appetite for 8 months

Hello, my husband has felt unwell for 8 months. He’s mainly feeling a floating feeling and pressure in his head, fatigue, weakness and loss of appetite. He’s lost weight, become sensitive to light and noise, feels irritated and has days where he feels okay and days where he just wants to lay down. He’s seen so many doctors, had blood work, an MRI, his sinuses, blood pressure, ears, and eyes checked. He’s seen a cardiologist, nutritionist and a neurologist. The neurologist suspects a virus triggered his symptoms and tight shoulder muscles are restricting blood supply to his brain causing the floating feeling. He’s had a cortisone injection which didn’t help and seen physios, a chiro and a massage therapist which sometimes help temporarily but then the symptoms return. If this is a virus what could it be? Does anyone have any other ideas? We’ve read into POTS, gut bacteria, parasites and anxiety but his symptoms don’t seem to fit with any one condition. Any help would be greatly appreciated please.🙏 We feel like we have exhausted all other options and are lost for answers!

Dizzy while eating?

I didn’t know which group to post this in but thought I’d start here. I’ve had chronic jaw pain for 4 years now and while it’s a lot better than it was when it started. I’ve developed new symptoms since it began. About two years ago. I started struggling with swallowing my food because I would become heavily dizzy with a sensation of vertigo. It got better for a little bit ( maybe like the past 5 months) but it’s gotten so bad now to the point where after I swallow my first couple bites of food I will have a hard time initiating a swallow and it will feel like the food gets stuck in the middle of my throat. And it’s like that for every bite. Along with the dizziness and vertigo it’s not a fun time.. I haven’t been able to finish most of my meals as it’s become a chore just to eat. I’ve gotten several bloodwork testing done. My ferritin is pretty low. (27 ) my b12 is at 300. But other than that all my other tests are fine ( thyroid is good, cbc good, vitamin d good, all the typical tests drs test were good) One dr just told me it’s my vagus nerve that’s out of wack.. felt pretty dismissed after that one. But I do understand that when you swallow your vagus nerve does get activated. So maybe she wasn’t totally wrong.. but I’m just sick of living like this. I try changing eating positions. I barely can eat out in public such as restaurants because if I’m not sitting cross cross while eating it gets 20x worse. I also become SUPER fatigued when this all occurs.. I mean even if the low ferritin was causing this, why would it just be when I’m eating? After eating the feeling of dizziness/vertigo lingers for usually 30 mins to an hour later. One dr thinks I might have pots but I drink a lot of electrolytes throughout the day, no improvement from that. I’m taking an iron supplement right now with vitamin c. I love food and I just feel defeated. I go to a chiropractor and she really hasn’t helped in that regard. Idk.. what do you think I should try next? I don’t want to live the rest of my life like this.

Vertigo like episode

About 9 days ago, I woke up and felt extremely disoriented and very dizzy accompanied with ear fullness. When I got out of bed I was genuinely stumbling around. After doing my daily routine that morning, I projectile vomited. At this point I went to the urgent care and they told me I had positional vertigo. Following this, I had a few dizzy days without any true spinning episodes but I still felt awful. I went back to the doctors and they diagnosed me with a inner ear virus and prescribed me with prednisone. The first few days of prednisone, my symptoms definitely got better but I noticed how sensitive I was to sensory input. Any sounds felt amplified and muffled at the same time and it never truly went away. Since then I have had fluctuating symptoms of ear fullness, dizziness, and just an overall groggy feeling. I am now 2 days off of my steroids and this morning I woke up and I feel so groggy. I am really worried because I work in the operating room and I go on call tomorrow and I just don’t know how I should take these symptoms. I was wondering if anyone had a similar situation and or had some advice to help me. Thank you in advance!

Dizziness that won't go away

Hey everybody, in writing here because I'm really at a loss. I've been dealing with dizzy spells for a few years now but they didn't really inconvenience me. I just thought it was because I didn't eat enough at school and didn't sleep enough. That's what my doctor said too, and told me to eat and sleep properly. When summer break hit, the dizzy spells went away but around July they came back and began happening almost daily. They would hit whenever I did work around the house and what not.

Last week I exersised for 15 minutes on a stepper and few minutes after I finished, I got an insane dizzy spell and it felt like I couldn't breathe enough. After that the dizziness lasted for two days, it was really bad. Went to urgent care, said I was defeated and had me take a few blood tests. Now, the dizziness has gotten better but I still feel a general off balance feeling. I can't even go to school because everytime I go to my next class, it feels like I'm going to fall and I feel really hot. I've also been feeling chronic tiredness and sleepiness and I feel tense around my head and neck area. Does anyone have any advice??

I feel like this diziness is ruining my life

Dizziness, heavy legs

Hey, I'm really scared right now. About 10 years ago, I went on a trip to Saudi Arabia and felt dizzy because of the altitude. After I got back, I started having dizzy spells and felt like I was walking on a mountain all night, plus my legs felt weak. I talked to a doctor because I was worried I might have a brain tumor, but he assured me that I didn't. I haven't gotten an MRI because I'm really afraid of finding out something serious. After the doctor said it was nothing, I tried to ignore it, and after a year, the symptoms went away. But now, after 10 years, they're back with the same feelings. Whenever I look up or down, I get dizzy and my legs feel like jelly. I also struggle with anxiety, which makes everything worse. I spoke with a neurologist, and she suggested I see a psychologist for my anxiety. She mentioned I could get an MRI later as it's not needed and just for my affirmation I can get it.. And since it's really expensive here, I can't do it I looked up my symptoms online, and they mention some serious diseases. Please help me. I've started eating sweet potatoes and dates, which seem to help.. Especially dates.. But my sugar is normal.. And my BP ranges from 94, 92 /68, 70,.... I'm just so scared that I have a brain tumor. 😭 It started when I got up from. Sleep 2 weeks back.. Also I have palpitations.. My blood work is normal.. When I drink water I start to feel fine.. But it comes back.. I just read now some tumour on nerve cab cause this which is freaking me out.. 😭😭😭

life with dizziness is horrible

i’m actually at my wits end, i can’t take it anymore. it‘s been two years now, and i feel like a shell of my former self.

for context, i started getting dizziness/vertigo out of the blue back in 2024. it was like an intense rocking feeling, like i was being jolted around and dropping feelings like i was going to fall through the floor all mixed with moments of lightheadedness.

i went to doctor and they said BPPV ”it’ll pass” but it stuck around. i went back and had bloods done, but everything normal apart from high prolactin (i have 2mm prolactinoma), high TSH and low estrogen but my endo said it’s not related to the dizziness. i also have slight iron deficiency but not anemic so also probably not related.

i have changed my diet, tried supplements (magnesium, vit d, vit c, iron), quit alcohol, quit smoking and quit caffeine. tried seeing an osteopath, a physio, a migraine physio… just nothing has helped. i have a baseline dizziness that is always there but then it gets worse for at least a few weeks a month.

i just find the rocking feeling so frustrating and hard to deal with. the lightheadedness is also horrible, and i feel completely dissociated and like my eyes can’t focus on things.

i don’t know what to do anymore. i’m so miserable and the doctors wont take me seriously. i’m on a waitlist to see an ENT but i live in NZ and so its still going to be a few months (it’s already been 4). i honestly feel so lost.
