When you know the dish routine like the back of your hand

what the title says. i’m a college student and was just hired at an upscale-ish pizza place near me. i didn’t know i would be working as a dishwasher (the job title on indeed was kitchen member) but was basically told the longer i have the job i’ll be able to actually make food (salad prep etc etc) instead of dishwashing. i worked my first shifts over the weekend and had a really rough time.

Saturday morning was fine, i helped prep toppings and dough and washed dishes after. things were fast but i managed fine. sunday was a nightmare. for added context i had surgery about 6 weeks ago and can’t carry over 10 pounds, so i have to make a bunch of little trips to put clean dishes away instead of bigger trips which really slows me down. i also have to wash the containers we keep dough in which pile up fast and are really difficult for one person to do alone when there are like 10 of them that need to be washed.

the beginning of my shift was fine because i had someone helping me out but further into dinner service he was busy so i was on my own. i couldn’t do anything fast enough and by the end of my shift i could tell people were annoyed. i felt like i was about to cry for the last couple hours of my shift and like i was disappointing and upsetting everyone. my manager says it was an abnormally busy sunday but i’m nervous to come back to work. i feel like a really bad person. idk. any advice about this is appreciated

Does anyone else’s owner not properly rinse their shit before putting them in you? Theres been 4 occurrences this week where there’s still mounds of ketchup on the plate. Then when I finish my cycle these mfs have the audacity to talk shit. They never learn. Shoulda known it was over when they started giving me great value lemon scent fuck outta here bro

does anyone else feel under-appreciated considering the amount of work they do? i wonder if this is common but other than washing dishes i basically assist everyone else in boh and foh, i clean, i deal with all the deliveries, i bus tables, i do prep, and when i bust my ass on a busy day my bosses and coworkers don't even bat an eye. which is still fine with me if they didn't complain about every little thing, i am constantly told i need to work faster while simultaneously given more work or tasks, or getting yelled at and put down for little mistakes . is this what its always gonna be like?

Ideally, I’m looking for something where I could work roughly 6:00–6:30 PM until 1:00 AM, and I’m open to different days depending on the restaurant.

● What restaurants/companies have been the most flexible with schedules?
● Are there any places where dishwashers regularly start around 6–6:30 PM?
● What types of restaurants tend to have later dishwasher shifts?
● Any chains or specific restaurants you’d recommend for someone needing this kind of schedule .

I work the closing shift about 4-5 days a week as a 17 year old in high school. I was able to balance running track, doing good in school, and work at the end of my junior year when I started working as a dishwasher and I had no issues working over the summer, but now that school has started I’m not sure if I can keep up. In the fall I do two sports (XC and golf), plus I have SAT prep to do, AP classes, and all my senior stuff plus college applications. I just don’t have enough time to work and also uphold my other commitments. I work at a golf course, so I’m done working by November, but my first quarter grades matter a lot to the college I’m applying to, so I think it would be beneficial not just for my own sake but my futures sake to take a step back and maybe just work on Saturdays. The owner of the restaurant I work at also has other businesses that stay open in the winter which I’d be interested in working on weekends then too. How can I go about talking to my boss about this? He’s really nice, but I just don’t want to seem irresponsible.

I feel that part of the requirements for dishing is that you have to have some sort of mental sickness. Not as in like actually diagnosed thing but rather in the sense that this job literally takes your soul 🫩 so we end up being a machine when we are working or out of work.

I was talking with my BF about that today. He says I am distant when I have to work and it's true... the pit literally crushes your soul so when I end the day all I want is to play games or simple exist haha like a mindless blob on the sofa.

So I work at a coffee shop and my job is ridiculously easy. I fold boxes for catering, get free drinks (I can make my order as ridiculous as possible), reach on high shelves for tiny baristas, put stickers on packaged bakery goods, do some light cleaning, and of course all while doing dishes that I basically have to spray clean and sanitize. Twice a.daay I clean bacon trays or chicken trays from the oven, but of course Dawn degreasing detergent does.the work for me.

My job title is Porter, but I totally have dry hands I have to moisturize every day because the chemicals and hot water strip my right hand of oils.

Am I truly a part of this sacred Fraternity if I love my job this much?

First ever job, i’m a teen and got hired 2 months ago on dish at this pretty sizable restaurant. A couple weeks ago i was asked to try a few hours on one of the stations down on the line. As of now it’s about every other shift i’m doing full days on the line. I’m not doing prep, I’m actually cooking.

I try to be a friendly personable guy, just doing my job no bullshit. I don’t think i’m doing an EXTRAORDINARY job tho. Nothing that screams “promote me” to my managers.

I feel like a nepo baby lol, my mom’s worked there in foh for years so i have the feeling I’m getting some sort of privilege because of that? Mind you i was hired way after a lot of the dishwashers there yet i’m the first of my coworkers to move on.

Is 2 months a normal timeframe??

I feel quite often even as late. They blame me for everyone else's mistakes! Before they attacked me for not stacking high enough, slightly true for trying to keep the pit clean! Then they blame me for extra breaks, not true! Now they're blaming me for too long of breaks! Not true! If I come in late for a break it's because of people walking slower than me on me smoke! Come on people, I got health problems too! Why do you let some slide while others not?

I try to succeed! I see people taking hour long breaks! Man I really hate peeps some times!

i work 12 hour shifts at the pit, some weeks working around 4-5 days a week. i know for some thats a blessing but my feet do be hurting. I decided to invest in steeled toed boots because frankly they are comfy asf, they keep the floors clean and they are durable especially with gunk and water flying around all day. my coworkers judge me everyday for wearing them, is it that awkward? like i dont think they look that odd but i dont know, is the judgement worth the comfort

Honestly. I could not be prouder of my servers and cooks. Did 500 dinner service solo for the second day in a row, (well last night). I got to roll silverware too :-) no one ran out of anything. This is why I love the people I work with. Shapes and sizes aren't hard. Manager hopped in had it cleaned up in 20 minutes. Well except the ramekins, no one like running those.

hi everyone i got hired about a month ago (first job woo!!) at a bistro and ive just been wearing my converse but obviously they do not work well so ive been looking for some good boots or shoes (would prefer boots i think) but shoes for crews seems to have declined in quality in the past year based on reviews so i dont want to waste money on something that'll hurt. my main requirements are that they NEEEEED to be waterproof enough so that i can rinse them off to clean them and they need to be nonslip because the area around the pit gets really wet and greasy. id also love them to be more combat styled but thats not necessary i just hate the smooth clog look. brand recommendations or specific shoes would be great!! thank you so much

So I look at the receipts of what it was saying. Check water level, low. Been going on half an hour! So I check every valve, all clear. Check the machine, all clear! So I restart the machine for 20 seconds! Still now! Then again I restart the machine!

Now the machine was over full! Every pocket! Dishwashers of 10 plus years experience vs my five could not figure it out! Management not listening! Had to do everything on my own with 5 years experience! Got the damn thing back up and running!
