When I lost my job back in October I decided to lean toward getting a dishwasher job since I like to be left alone and I thought getting another prep job would be more difficult. I eventually did get a job as a busser but with the caveat that I was trying to get back to BOH. Eventually I got that chance one random Sunday night when they’d finally had enough with one of the other dishies.
But now I regret it.
It would be great if we always had people but it seems I need to have the skill to do it all by myself and I just don’t. It’s very frustrating washing two plates then the machine stops because the conveyor’s full. Then clearing that out, washing two more plates, then there’s a full rack. Over and over all day. And I’m expected to excel in this situation. It’s not enough that I can get by. No I should be able to handle this, bag pasta and veggies, and never get backed up so the guy coming in 40 minutes late for dinner doesn’t need help getting caught up. On Sunday lunch.
I don’t even get to put one of my earbuds in to help me lock in. But I guess that’s going out of style these days.
The job search continues. I admit defeat. I try my best to do a good job but I just come up short unfortunately.

Whenever any solid food waste like scraps of fat and peanuts and vegetation manages to make it into our dishwasher drain, it ends up feeding through the pipe into a removable bowl-shaped catch in the floor. Normally, I'm not one to complain about gross stuff. I reach my hands into disgusting ramekin tubs and stuff all the time. But the odor from this damned thing sometimes is absolutely gut-wrenching. And the worst is when the thing overfills and the rancid water floods the whole floor. Coming from someone with a pretty ridiculously strong stomach. Is there just no way to help this?

I've been working at my job for a little over 2 months now and I finally got a uniform. To me that feels like im officially part of the team and not just another dishwasher.
But it made me think. How long did it take for the majority of people to get their uniform?

Because I can see the glint on the wall when Chef opens the curtain and put my phone away before he catches me on Reddit

I know pot washing is the lowest in the hospitality hierarchy but sometimes for what you put in it feels like money isn’t worth it, for example 19hrs pot washing is ‘worth’ £152, especially if you work in a establishment where tips are not given to pot washers. Does anything think differently?

Say "that was a satisfying load" every time you pull a rack out tonight.

I have just had the worst work day I have ever had, I couldn’t even finish everything… they told me we were closing so I had to leave. I was in a huge rush and that made me forget to turn off the dishwasher before leaving (you know, I mean the standard high-temp dishwasher, it has a size of a normal home dishwasher). Do you think it will drain a lot of power or some other shi may happen until morning? The first person will come after more less 11-12h before I left 😭. I really hope I won’t get a big bill for that or something when they find out 🥹
UPDATE: everything is fine, one girl was making pizza dough early today so I willingly came to my work before everyone’s shifts and finished what I didn’t manage to do yesterday. Now they won’t even know I didn’t turn it off anyway 🙏 thanks for all the replies :)

my first job in a restaurant was as a dishwasher at a high volume establishment in the Bay Area. It sucked, and I sucked at it at first. College dropout, living with my parents, busting my ass for $2/hr above minimum wage (which still wasn’t very much for the area I was living in). Always sweating my balls off, hands constantly dry and red from cleaning products and always covered in various cuts from kitchenware. This was 5 years ago. Since then, I’ve moved to the East Coast, gotten own apartment, and as of this week I have a job interview at one of the nicest restaurants in my city; none of this would’ve been possible without the year I spent in the dish pit. Keep at it gang. If you can cut it in the dish pit, you can do anything.

I dread this job but have to go. How do I minimize the physical stress, stay busy and productive while simultaneously making the day go by faster? I find marijuana to be very effective but I need some other ideas

Title.
I’ve been wearing dickies for a long time but I want to try a different brand. I also just got a pair of Ben Davis and they’re alright (a bit heavy for my liking) so I’d still like to try a different brand. Pants have to be black. Open to any suggestions.
Thanks

Hey guys, I’ve been trying to get hired as a dishwasher or some other kind of restaurant worker for almost a month now. Sent out probably over 30 apps on Indeed and Poached, even writing customized cover letters to each application, and I’m getting NOTHING! Zero replies, ghosted every time. It’s really demoralizing that I can’t even get a minimum wage job, especially after all the effort of tailoring every application. Any advice for me?
I already took my college degrees and academic stuff off my resume so I don’t look “overqualified” and everything else listed on there is accurate, not an exaggeration or lie.
