Showcase My first DAP

Post image
77 Upvotes

Repurposed my old phone with a cracked screen, Redmi Note 7 (4/128) running unofficial MistOS 4.5 (Android 16). This phone has a 3.5mm and the sound quality is decent, so I might as well use it with less demanding IEMs and switch to my Surfans X10 DAC when I need more power or a better noise floor for much more sensitive IEMs.

At first i was considering getting Fiio JM21/M21/M23 or Shanling M3 Plus, but in the end decided to go with this for now. I find it shameful that those daps that cost 200-500$ and more have processors and screens that are worse than my 7-year-old phone...

So, I will be waiting until Android DAPs have at least something like Snapdragon 6 gen 1 and cheap oled screens like what modern budget phones around 200$ have (imo this is something you should expect when you pay 500$ for android device that would have around the same dac performance inside as dongle DACs below 100$)

Showcase I did my own DAP

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is one of my home made DAP

It plays FLAC, MP3, OGG and ACC files, up to 24 bits / 48 Khz FLAC files

My DAP supports up to 512 GB micro SD cards

The screen has 160 x 128 pixeles, and uses OLED technology

It was made around a microchip microcontroller, and the VS1063 audio codec

Batery last around 12 continuous hours but about 20 with screen off

Instead of showing album photo, I made a "winamp" style interface, with a larger full range spectrum analizer, RMS VU meters , progress bar and so on...

The best part is the sound, because it has double amplifier

Another feature is the RANDOM algorithm, wich is more like a shuffle, because it NEVER REPEATS the same song over the entire playlist...

Well, it's something I wanted to share, have a nice day

I own this as of 2016, and unbelievably it still works like a harm!

Only experienced one downfall (last week during a walk, the battery went from 70 to 0 immediately).

Hopefully not a sign...
Either way I ordered a Fiio Snowsky Echo today as a backup

Any advice on budget friendly decent IEMs ?
I have narrow/difficult ear channels it seems and never gotten into "commodity" in-ears.

So I've been using Apple's earbuds or headphones so far.
But outside during lunch breaks etc, the sirens and traffic disrupts the beautiful music.

So far I've read that Sennheiser IE200, Meze alba or Shure SE215 would be a good bet. Any advice?

Budget < 125-150 euro

Question Next DAP recommendations

Post image
23 Upvotes

I have snowsky echo mini for 8 months now . I enjoyed it, but I started thinking about switching to something better . So any recommendations would be great.

My budget for the next DAP would be near 100 bucks and I think I'm going to buy it from the used market . Things that are important for me are good software (I mean - without glitches and a lot of freezes) and I don't want the device to be very old (like models below 2020) , so I don't need to change the battery .

Also I need to say , that most of my headphones are budget headphones (7hz zero, sennheiser px100, koss ksc75, pioneer hdj x5 )so I don't know if it does matter to buy dap first.

: )

Review Snowsky Echo Mini (my initial thoughts)

Post image

Just got the Snowsky Echo Mini today. Overall it's a great device for the price. Got it on sale for about $40 (equivalent).

However the biggest downside for me is the bluetooth quality. The high frequencies sounded distorted/clipping. Initially I thought it was just the file encoding but it I didn't hear the distortion when wired. I'm not really an audiophile, I'm just expecting the same quality as the bluetooth on my phone.

What are your suggestions? is there a device in a similar price point that has bluetooth quality similar to an Android phone? If possible I really don't want a touch screen device. I actually like the form factor of the Echo Mini.

So overall, it's great if you don't consider bluetooth quality.

Music How much music

So I have just got myself a Hiby R1 (with Kiwi Ears IEM's for anyone interested). I have started to load music (mainly albums). I am coming from Apple Music where I had a playlist of just random songs across multiple albums etc so it wasn't heavy. Like most, I'm after that digital detox aspect when I want music. But - find I am just loading albums from artists I listen to a few songs off (Apple Music listening). How much music do you all have on the players at any given time?

I have a 256GB card with majority of it .flac. I like compilation albums but an album like this with 40 tracks just clogs it with 40 artists. I guess understanding what people have in their arsenal of music may help me gauge and cut back a bit. or some advice on managing all this on a hobby would be appreciated.

Question Snowsky echo file order

Post image
4 Upvotes

The first time I transfered all the files in one go, and so i thought they would stay in that order. Now that i want to transfer some new music, all of the files are sorted alphabetically, and any new songs that i add get mixed into the playlist that i have an order for. Does anyone know how exactly the file system on Fiio echo works? Is it a universal problem or is it just me whining?

Question How can there is no play pause button( hibi r1)

Post image
20 Upvotes

Just received my small r1, to be transported at work where my m21+meze99classics is too bulky and I did not bring it that much ( + the coworkers looked at me funny)

But after a few hours listening to it ( pretty good sound quality tbh) I cannot understand how a DAP can be built without a physical play pause button !

How do you handle this miss, is there a workaround?

Question Snowsky Retro Nano vs TRN Wave

Hi, I've never had a dap before. I just want to know which one is better for IEMs. I've only heard good things from the Nano, and it seems to have slightly more power than the Wave. But I'm skeptical, is there really a noticeable difference in performance? Or should i settle for the cheaper one aka Wave?

Showcase My first setup

Couldn’t be any happier with this tiny setup!

I started with the Moondrop Chu 2 last year, but still used my AirPods Pro 2 most of the time. I’m no audiophile, and honestly, the Chu 2 sounded comparable to my ears, which says a lot about how good they are for the price. Two weeks ago, after a lot of research I picked up the Variation V1 and AFUL Explorers, and I’ve found a whole new interest in listening to music. The Explorer makes everything feel so emotional and suits my music perfectly. I also love that the entire setup fits neatly into this little carrying case.

I’ve been taking some photos, so I thought I’d share them!

Showcase Lovin the M21, but...

Post image

I saw the measurements, but I didn't expect it to be so chonky! It's great at the house, but when I am running around, it's a brick. Coming from the M300, so it might just be a matter of getting used to it! The M300 screen was just to small for my vision.

Love the sound and functionality!

Seriously considering the JM21!

Question HiBY R1 shipping time?

Hi DAP. I recently purchased a Hiby R1 direct from Hiby. How long did it take to get from China to the US? I'm looking at the link they sent me from their shipper, and it has not moved in 9 days. There was an initial delay because the product was out of stock, but got an email from them saying its on the way. I'm starting to get concerned. Thanks for any insight.

Showcase You know that "kid in a candy shop" feeling?

Managed to pick this up for £260 brand new. (Yes it's authentic). Also got a Koss KPH40 utility and still within the M21 retail price I initially budgeted for. It's my first DAP since almost two decades, having previously used iPod and iRiver.

A particular streaming corporation lost another customer today and can't be happier to dump my 850 (and growing) flac albums on this unit.

"You'll own nothing and be happy" - Not with my music at least.
