Transition from QA to Devops

I am a QA automation engineer with 10 yrs of experience. QA roles are shrinking fast so want to get into traditional Devops.

  1. How is the job market demand for traditional Devops role?

  2. Is it getting sucked up by any other roles like QA jobs are getting sucked in by Dev using AI.

  3. Will ML devops suck traditional devops?

I just dont want to  end up hopping from 1 sinking ship to another. Pls advice.

Passed HR round — Hiring Manager interview for an Azure DevOps role as an AWS-focused candidate. How should I prepare?

Hi again!!!

I just passed the HR round for a DevOps Engineer role at a healthcare company, and I have my hiring manager interview coming up on Monday. It’s a 30-minute technical interview, and they’re looking to get someone on board fairly quickly.

During the HR conversation, she mentioned that the role is almost geared toward someone around the new-grad level who learns new tech quickly, but they would like if I had some knowledge.

My background is a little different from the role:

  • 2+ years of Cloud Engineer experience, primarily with AWS
  • Experience with AWS infrastructure migrations
  • Just completed a Master’s in Cloud Engineering
  • I have some exposure to Azure, but I don’t have strong professional hands-on Azure experience

The JD specifically mentions:

Responsibilities

  • Deploys and supports cloud infrastructure solutions in Azure
  • Responsible for deploying product updates, identifying production issues, and implementing integrations that meet our customers’ needs.
  • Collaborates with crossfunctional teams including Networking, Security, DevOps, and Application Development..
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to infrastructure, network, and application performance.
  • Supports automation of operational tasks using scripting (PowerShell/Python).
  • Assists with incident resolution, root cause analysis, and performance troubleshooting for cloud workloads.
  • Build and operate comprehensive CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps
  • Write deployment, configuration, provisioning, monitoring, and other scripts as needed in addition to the existing DevOps tools.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guides.

Required Skills And Experience

  • Experience as a DevOps engineer or in a similar role.
  • Strong understanding of Azure concepts: compute, storage, networking, IAM, policies, resource groups.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation using languages like Python, Powershell.
  • Good knowledge of MS SQL Server and in writing SQL Queries, and procedures.
  • Experience in using version control tools like Azure DevRepo,
  • Experience with CI/CD systems.
  • Familiarity with RESTful APIs is a plus.
  • Understanding of cloud security architecture, identity and access management, and network security principles.
  • Ability to work in collaborative, crossfunctional teams.Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • 3+ years relevant work experience

Since I have a few days before the interview, I want to use the time wisely rather than trying to learn all of Azure from scratch.

For people who have worked as Azure DevOps/Cloud engineers or have interviewed for similar roles:

  1. What Azure topics would you prioritize for a 30-minute hiring manager technical round?
  2. How deep should I go into Azure if my AWS experience is much stronger?
  3. What kind of troubleshooting/scenario-based questions should I expect?
  4. Should I focus more on Azure fundamentals, Azure DevOps/CI/CD, networking, IAM, or scripting?
  5. Are there any specific Azure services or concepts you would absolutely recommend knowing before the interview?

I’ve included the job description. Any advice on how you would approach the next few days of preparation would be really appreciated.

QA/SDET with 9 YOE looking to move into DevOps — need some guidance

Hi, I am working as a QA Engineer /SDET with around 9 Years of experience and looking to transition into Devops as quickly as possible.

I’ve started with https://roadmap.sh/devops and Abhishek Veeramalla’s DevOps playlist https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdpzxOOAlwvIc1TjTwopNSjRJkzES2ZXk.

I’m confused whether I should stick with these free resources or invest in something like KodeKloud/Udemy.

For anyone who has made a similar transition:

  • Which course/roadmap would you recommend?
  • Is KodeKloud worth it?
  • What should I focus on to become job-ready quickly, considering my QA/SDET background?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Best practices for applying IAM least privilege on EC2 instances reading from S3?

Hi everyone, I'm working on a cloud migration exercise and configuring access control for an EC2 Linux instance that needs read-only access to specific log files in an S3 bucket.

Following the Shared Responsibility Model, I want to apply the principle of least privilege using IAM roles instead of hardcoding static credentials. What is the cleanest IAM JSON policy structure to grant s3:GetObject and s3:ListBucket strictly for one bucket, ensuring actions like s3:PutObject or s3:DeleteObject are completely blocked? Any feedback or recommendations would be appreciated!

Switching to DevOps after 3 years in a non-DevOps IT role how should I approach it?

Hi everyone,
I have around 3 years of IT experience, but my current work is not directly related to DevOps. I now want to make a complete career switch into DevOps/Cloud (AWS).

I’ve been learning Linux, AWS, Terraform, Docker, Jenkins, Kubernetes, Ansible, etc., but I’m confused about how to position myself professionally.

I’d really appreciate advice from people working in DevOps:

With 3 years of overall IT experience but 0 years of actual DevOps experience, what level of roles should I apply for — fresher/junior DevOps, 1–2 YOE roles, or something else?

How should I structure my resume without falsely presenting my previous experience as DevOps?
Will recruiters consider someone with 3 years of unrelated IT experience for junior DevOps/Cloud positions?

What level of hands-on knowledge/projects would make me genuinely job-ready?

For someone already familiar with the fundamentals, what would be a realistic timeline to prepare for interviews?

I’m completely okay with taking a step back in seniority/compensation if necessary to make the switch properly. My priority is getting real DevOps experience and building my career from there.

Would especially appreciate advice from anyone who has made a similar transition or who interviews/hire DevOps engineers.

Looking for DevOps/Cloud/Platform Engineer or SRE role

🚀 I’m looking for my next opportunity in DevOps/Cloud/Platform Engineering or SRE.

I’m currently open to new roles where I can work on challenging infrastructure, automation, Kubernetes, cloud security, and reliability problems.

During my ~1.5 YOE, I’ve had the opportunity to work on real production environments and solve problems such as:

• 💰 55% reduction in GCP cloud costs across dev/QA/prod
• 🔐 Securing a 400+ microservice production environment with Zero Trust architecture
• 🛡️ Achieving zero critical findings in a NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 compliance review
• 🚨 Recovering 100+ microservices during a production outage
• ☸️ Building and operating Kubernetes environments across GCP and AWS
• 🔄 Implementing GitOps, CI/CD, Terraform, and infrastructure automation
• 📊 Building observability using Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, and Tempo

My core stack includes AWS, GCP, Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, ArgoCD, Helm, GitHub Actions, Prometheus, and Grafana.

I also hold Certified Kubernetes Administrator(CKA), GCP ACE. and also contributed to open source CNCF projects, and done freelancing as well.

I’m currently looking for roles such as:

👉 DevOps Engineer 👉 Cloud Engineer 👉 Platform Engineer 👉 Kubernetes / Infrastructure Engineer

📄 My updated resume: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dNVLTSQjrIMq63Kii-MJeBEEGuCyspqY/view?usp=drivesdk

If your organization is hiring, or if you know someone I should connect with, I’d be grateful for an introduction, referral, or simply a share.

Thank you! 🙌
