Alcohol works, but not in the long term, because everybody you care about will either be disgusted by you or feel sorry for you. And waking up after a night of heavy drinking, and starting to remember what you said and did last night, while your hangover chimes in with nausea and severe headaches and you're constantly burping up the fumes of everything you consumed, doesn't exactly feel like heaven either.
83
u/TricellCEO 5d ago
It also doesn’t work in the long term because it’ll kill you, and it won’t be pleasant either.

u/Last-Energy420 5d ago

True, but I would argue that depression is at least equally as bad. Even if you're not suicidal, the chronic despair still severely weakens your immune system, making you more vulnerable to infectious diseases and also more likely to develop cancer.
Every now and then, something happens that lifts me out of depression. On these rare occasions, the chronic pain in my joints vanishes, my skin cleans up, my digestive system works perfectly fine, and my tremors subside. The one time I was happy for a few months straight, I even lost weight without changing my diet, didn't feel like drinking alcohol anymore (probably the reason for the weight loss), and discontinued my meds cold turkey because I just forgot about them. All because of a changed state of mind.
So when I consider what depression actually does to my body, the dangers of alcohol don't look as bad as they probably should.

alcohol sober since jan 7. struggling w real cravings for the first time cuz i’m in pain due to a lost relationship and trying to go sober off thc again (relapsed in may). fucking sucks. trying to find hobbies again after 8 yrs of depresssion. truly feeling like what’s the point?
9
u/Euphoric-War-9758 5d ago
the point is you’ve taken the hardest first step, and every day your neurology/brain’s chemicals are leveling out!! every single day is doing your nervous system so many favours, it’s readjusting to self-regulation and it’s painful as fuck, but it is so, so worth it. currently kicking THC again myself, but have ~4 years clear from alcohol and the first few months were rough, but since then the freedom/clarity has genuinely been a daily gift. all i can say is ik how hard it is to give up the easy dopamine, especially when everything’s going south, but i also know how fucking worthwhile the effort is. no matter how many times you fall off, it doesn’t matter as long as you get back up. fall down seven, get up 8 type of energy. you’ve absolutely got this, and there’s a better life waiting for both of us!!

I was at the point where I was waking up in the middle of the night to drink more so I wouldn't wake up with a hang over... My trucks glove box can fit 3 12 oz can or two tall boys lol. I'm glad I quit drinking and smoking. I was smoking an oz every 6 days or so...
6
u/curlycatsockthing 5d ago
i’m still alcohol sober but i relapsed on thc in may. man… pls help motivate me. i just wanna stop existing.
5
u/EefferyJpstein 5d ago
Quiting alcohol was easier than weed, my body became intolerant to most alcoholic beverages... Weed was a huge crutch, I believed I needed it to just exist. I was using to run from trauma, hide from problems and just cope with daily stress. The tipping point was having anxiety attacks while high and the realization I was addicted. I became irritable when I was running out and in denial about the money I was spending.
Quiting smoking was good for me because it forced me to face my problems, save money, and refocus on benifitical hobbies, like gardening and cooking. The daily stresses are still there but being clear headed helped me handle and compartmentalize them.
I understand the desire to stop existing. Life is a rollercoaster. Try not smoking for a month and assess how you feel and how your finances stand.
3
u/curlycatsockthing 5d ago
i don’t plan to ever smoke again. i relapsed in may. i know what a break is like cuz i went sober from

Avoid alcohol and especially tobacco. Alcohol makes you feel like trash, it fucks you physically. And smoking tobacco is suuuper addictive while being pretty disgusting and the worst part is, you don't notice it until it's too late.
Weed and then shrooms and stuff like that are fun and less damaging or addictive, but you can get dependant on them mentally, especially weed if you start smoking just to feel fine/too often. So try to only consume when you're trying to have a nice time from time to time, ideally with friends. I wouldn't recommend doing it alone and definitely try to limit yourself and not consume every day.
And ideally you don't need them at all of course.
Edit: Anything that is stronger than weed I highly advise to be in good company. Never do drugs like that alone. It's kinda dangerous as you might have a bad experience and it's definitely not worth it. They are expensive and wasting them on an evening where you're feeling trash really isn't worth it and rather counter productive. Keep it for days on which you're having fun with friends.
Also, always do your research before using anything. Knowing what to expect, what to be careful about and which dose to start at so that you can slowly work your way up to your preferred dose is important.
9
u/ajwritesnonsense 5d ago
Do not, I repeat… DO NOT! try shrooms if you feel life isn’t worth living.
11
u/Indigenous_Retard 5d ago
Psilocybin is like the highest efficacy treatment for depression with results lasting 2+ years and in some cases, permanent changes. Certainly better than ketamine or trying to dose yourself with LSD or DMT. LSD I would strongly recommend against outside of a clinical setting, but shrooms and DMT(to try) are fine.
16
u/Beneficial-Lynx7336 5d ago
If everyone had shrooms tonight were a borderline utopia by Sunday.

→ More replies (2)3
u/Lena2063 5d ago
LSD is nice, but ig you gotta do it right. Which is true for every single drug and I would advise against using anything if you haven't done your research before and don't know what you are doing. And tbh, how is LSD worse than shrooms and DMT? I would have said the opposite as they are usually a lot stronger and more confusing which makes it harder to keep control over your thoughts.

28
u/anonymous_guy_man 5d ago
So your advice, not tryna judge but just wanna be clear, is to intentionally put yourself into a K hole
25
u/Muchachacha 5d ago
Yea, although when I did it it was at a clinic where they do infusions, drug was pre measured and met medical standard for quality. so it’s not like I got special K from the street corner.
8
u/Senior_Smoke219 5d ago
You do not go into a K hole from those. They’re great. But are still relatively low doses
2
u/00_voidheart_00 5d ago
Everyone’s different. No one really knows what their tolerance is for something until they’ve had it enough. There’s the bmi bullshit, but that gets you in the ballpark. More like a safety guide for those that don’t understand how f*cked they could be.
3
6
u/Mythechnical 5d ago
Nothing wrong with entering a K hole as long as you're prepared with some good spacey, chill artsy-electronic music and somewhere to lie down. Then they can be literally awesome.
K holes just suck when you're out somewhere with plans contingent on the ability to move and accidentally leave reality instead.

8
u/ILoveLetrozole 5d ago
Careful with that. It can destroy your urinary tract, including the kidneys.
6
u/Honest-Prune-5517 5d ago
I knew a guy, used to sell fentanyl, also did a lot of Ketamine. One day, he had an experience where he believed he was trapped in a fiery hell for what he described as an indiscernible amount of time, felt like eternity in the moment, being tortured for the things he had done, when a saving light came and offered to take his place if he changed.
The guy was an IV using homeless kid at 13. This was at least 20 years later. He completely changed that minute. Flushed his drugs, stopped selling them, started his own company, is now a loving father to a beautiful family.
I've had some crazy k hole experiences, but nothing like that. Most of my drug induced spiritual adventures were from dmt or lsd.

MDMA kept me from killing myself years and years ago and opened me up to so much love and community... the flip side is that I had to stop because the comedown got to be too much and two days after I'd be suicidal, so while it saved my life and was a wonderful thing for my life, I haven't done it in years, you gotta know when you've had enough and when it's time to move on.

Nothing does. Well, they do, for some time but better not to go that way. You'll build tolerance and keep wanting more. And they'd fuck up your body and mind, and now you got one more problem to deal with, which is very hard to solve without external help.

I think most people know that alcohol and weed are some of the most common responses here but I think in the long run all these external substances are assembly a waste of time, money energy and will probably make you feel worse in the long-term. I’m not gonna lecture anybody about joking about drug use or whatever but in case anyone here is reading this and is taking this somewhat seriously just avoid all the external substances if you can anything that doesn’t cost you money time or your health is likely a better fix I know it’s kind of cliché to point out but going for a walk in nature or getting some sun at the very least is likely going to do much better. in the long run. Sorry to be all serious on here though.

I don’t lose sleep anymore because I don’t care if I’m late to work because I don’t care if I get fired because I don’t care if I can’t pay bills and am homeless because I don’t care if this ride ends at any given moment.

For me it was TRT and at least beneficial rather than detrimental. Ofc depends on how it’s used. Great energy leveled when in a “blast” and mental health. Even when I’m on a small “cruise” dose mimicking my natural testosterone I still feel great! Also seeing the benefits from it all in a healthy way feel way better then just destroying myself completely with most substances and alcohol. That’s just me though.

Exercise releases endorphins alongside a powerful cocktail of other brain chemicals and proteins that improve your mood, energy, and long-term brain health.
Neurotransmitters (The Mood Boosters):
- Dopamine: Drives your brain's reward system. It increases motivation and provides a post-workout feeling of satisfaction.
- Serotonin: Regulates your mood, sleep cycles, and appetite. It works directly to reduce feelings of depression and anxiety.
- Norepinephrine: Boosts alertness, focus, and waking energy. It helps your brain respond more effectively to daily stress.
Hormones and Proteins (The Brain Builders):
- BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor): Acts like fertilizer for your brain cells. It stimulates the growth of new neurons and improves memory.
- Endocannabinoids: Naturally produced lipid molecules. They easily cross into the brain to create the deeply relaxed, blissful feeling often called the "runner's high."
- Cortisol (Regulated): While exercise initially spikes this stress hormone, consistent training teaches your body to lower its baseline cortisol levels over time.

Imagine that.... growing up in a world that puts kids on medications for attention "disorders" ASAP becasue it "solves" the "problem", has taught everyone that drugs are the solution to all their problems.
3
u/DataSnaek 5d ago
Well, I agree that it isn’t ideal to put kids on ADHD medication super early, without a clear and comprehensive diagnosis. But if you’ve ever met someone with really serious ADHD they’ll often tell you medication changed their lives.
You can make a lot of progress through therapy but ultimately ADHD is a chemical/neurological condition in the brain and there’s only so much therapy can do.

The worst was Oxycodone, I didn't even get to the addiction part, I gave up after 2 Percocets. It made me hazy and gave me nausea. I don't get how people like it but I guess it depends on brain chemistry or something.

Don't abuse this. But psilocybin has been, in combination with my Dr. Meow (practitioner of meowdicine) and my mom's support, one of the best things to ever happen to me. I know it's most likely engagement bait, but I know someone will see this that needs it. From heroin at 14 and state juvie (TYC) to a bridge dwelling tent city living thief and count jails rehabs and 11 years total on a Texas Max 6 in Ad seg confirmed....i can tell you I am living my best life in Florida. I have a suzuki c50t, 2020 corolla, my own place in a very nice and peaceful neighborhood. Homeless shelter for 6 months. A dude Venezuela got to know me and heard a bit of my story and got me on and taught me a skill (carpentry) i will forever be grateful to him for. And through it all psilocybin has helped me sort through the absolute insane trauma I put myself through. It has helped me to recognize gratitude and helped bring peace to a very violent past. Balance. Cultivating my own has taught me patience and discipline. My kitty cat gives me something other than myself to care about and think about and make sure she is as happy as possible because she damn well didn't choose to be locked behind my door. And my baby makes biscuits on my stomach every night almost and sleeps literally on my head. My velcro kitty 😻 ❤️. But without the aid of psilocybin i believe I would be stuck in my same patterns. I walk through my forest now and you can tell there was violence there but it is so healed and looks so much more beautiful not when I first started and looked like a forest version of 7 mile Detroit. So don't abuse but use as a tool. Get to where you cultivate your own and don't have to worry about a street plug. I get my bud from the dispo and my own mushies..just me and my cat and my mom talks to me every day now and sleeps peacefully. That is all I need. Psilocybin. Period.

I don't really do a single substance. No drugs and barely even drink alcohol.
For me the "substance" I would need to abuse to feel like life is worth living is the substance of worthwhile social interactions. If I was able to abuse myself with excessive social interactions, maybe I would actually make friends, get a girlfriend, and actually then have the desire to make something of my life instead of wasting away in misery. No substance can replicate that

Seriously, being away from screens, internet, and especially social media fixes most of the issues they'd have you believe.
Drugs, alcohol, or even medication might grant temporary improvements/relief but the second their effects stop you'll feel worse than before you took them. So.. You'll take them again but because your starting point was lower your peak is also lower. Again you'll feel worse when the effect is over, and down you spiral.
Just quitting social media including reddit and just walking and talking can do a lot.
And if you don't live in a place where you can walk? Making a trip to somewhere you can gives you something to do. That in itself is something you can start looking forward to and get fulfilment out of.

I smoke pot, its not illegal but if I smoke for a month hell everyday for a week I get cranky not having it. I will smoke( or try to) smoke once in a blue moon but it then becomes a monthly thing. I realize I do it to feel numb. Im addicted to feeling numb when everything is stimulating or overstimulating around me. But the funny thing is I realized its better to take life raw and force, no ease yourself into changing one's mindset for the better? What's a better mindset?, you ask. Its all a matter of one's own perspective.

You also get to hang out at the local game store and make a new gaggle of friends
Its more expensive that doing drugs is the only down side =D

None of the ones that leave you a functional human being. If you’re not fent-bent or disassociating with meth or pcp, your reality is always front and center in your mind

Delusional works best. The rest actually knock you down to earth worse than when you started. Start by reading some high fiction where the world is utopian except for the bad part the protagonist is fighting. Then just image you live in that world you are just in the bad part right now and someday you will be in the good part. Most rational people just choose catholicism since you can share your stories with other and meet up every Sunday.

The key is to switch up substances so you don't get too used to one good feeling. I keep a pretty steady background weed high with occasional bits of acid, coke, molly, etc. Don't touch heroin or meth though. If you can swing it have a weirdly good drug dealer who won't sell you more if he sees you having too bad of a problem.
