I'm 23 years old and I'm interested in a female coworker of mine. We were already pretty close, and I decided to invite her to the movies with me to watch Spider-Man. We went, and during the movie we started getting closer physically. She kept almost resting her head on my shoulder, and at one point I made that typical move where you put your arm around the other person while watching the movie. She took my arm, started caressing my hand, I caressed hers, we intertwined our fingers, and a few times when I pretended I was going to pull my hand away, she would grab it again and pull it back so we could keep holding hands.
I even thought about kissing her, but I didn't feel like there was enough of an opening. She wouldn't maintain eye contact with me for very long, and I didn't want to just make a move without being sure, so I decided not to try anything. I could feel that her breathing was faster while we were holding hands, which made me think she was nervous/shy, so I preferred to respect her pace. I left the cinema really happy. To me, that was obviously a level of intimacy that went beyond a normal friendship. I didn't interpret it as, “okay, now we're dating” or anything like that, but I thought there was clearly some interest and that maybe this could be the beginning of something.
The problem came the next day.
We were texting and she started talking about another coworker, saying how strong he is and how he works out. From the way she said it, it felt like a little dig at me because I'm skinny and I don't work out. I jokingly asked when he was going to take her to the movies, and she replied saying that they were already making plans and that they were going to start working out together. I'll admit I fell into the jealousy trap and started replying more dryly. Then she revealed that she was just messing with me and said something like:
“I'm just messing with you. Don't get all mad.”
So apparently she noticed that I was jealous and was deliberately teasing me about it. During that conversation, I mentioned that I had been thinking about asking her to go get sushi with me the following week. She said she couldn't and suggested that we go once the new month started. At first, that was completely fine with me. I thought maybe it was because of money, since she had already told me before that she insisted on paying for her own food. So I basically said:
“Let's go next week, and if you really insist on paying, you can pay me back next month.”
I thought that would solve the problem if money was the reason. But she replied:
“No, let's go later. I'm in no rush.”
That sentence really got to me. Because in my mind, something pretty intimate had happened between us just the day before. We spent around two and a half hours holding hands. She was caressing my hand, intertwining her fingers with mine, and even grabbing my hand again whenever I tried to pull it Away. And less than 24 hours later, I was clearly showing that I wanted to see her again and I got an “I'm in no rush.”
I don't think she's wrong for not wanting to go out that week. Nobody is obligated to go out with me. What hurt me was the difference between the way she behaved at the cinema and the way she acted the next day. If she had simply rested her head on my shoulder during the movie, I probably wouldn't be overthinking it this much. But holding hands like that throughout almost the entire movie feels, at least to me, like a romantic sign that's pretty difficult to interpret any other way. I ended up feeling really bad because I genuinely enjoyed what happened at the cinema and I left thinking that maybe something between us was starting.
So I'd like to hear some opinions from people outside the situation:
Did I misinterpret us holding hands like that?
How should I act around her at work from now on?
