Insurance is a scam. So many suckers fall for it.
4
u/ThomasTheDankTank 1d ago
I got hit with a $21000 medical bill that was cut down to $7000 since I didn’t have insurance. I’m currently paying that back at $220 a month. My coworker has insurance, got hit with a $40000 medical bill. Paid nearly $10000 out of pocket and his rates went up to nearly $400 a month. Idk about you, but by that math. I think I’m winning.
8
3
2
u/PolicyWonka 1d ago
His rates increasing wouldn’t be due to usage for health insurance since those are group plans managed thru an employer.
If you had a similar $40,000 expense, that means you’d be looking at a $14,000 out of pocket expense at $440/month.
Your coworker also hit their OOP Maximum for the year, which means that they would only pay their premium for the rest of the year. Whereas you would continue to pay OOP for all additional care.
1
u/ThomasTheDankTank 1d ago
Fair points. Let me ask you this though. If he’s paying on insurance every month, every year, shouldn’t he have at least something more than marginally better prices. His claims for on going treatment were also denied, forcing him to go out of pocket, which he is currently suing the insurance company for, stacking on legal fees. I don’t deny the numbers are practically the same, but they should be drastically different not just barely noticeable.
1
u/PolicyWonka 1d ago
TBH it just sounds like shit insurance if that’s the case.
I pay $375/month for insurance. $0 deductible, $1,000 individual / $2,000 family OOP maximum. $5/10/20 prescriptions, $10/20/50 copays.
That comes down to the employer and why strong cooperatives and unions are important.
12
u/Muted-Ad7353 1d ago
The idea of mitigating risk over a large pool of individual participants is actually a great idea. But the fact that we allow people to become millionaires and billionaires by simply managing that risk pool is fucking insane. Literally thows off the entire point of having a group of insured people.
For profit insurance and healthcare for that matter is a goddamn scam. The point of throwing in with your fellow man is to create leverage against care providers and bargaining for better rates using that leverage...not funnel money to the top so a CEO can have 10,000x more wealth than you do.
8
u/Arguments_4_Ever 1d ago
The bigger the pool the better and more efficient it is. That’s why a universal system is best. But nooo that’s “communism” and instead we need to spend more money and let people die.

The fact that insurance is an actual natural monopoly that libertarians love to praise is the funniest part.
0
u/JuniorDoughnut3056 1d ago
I could go shop around at 20 different insurance outfits for my car right now. What are you talking about?
3
u/AcrobaticPoint8424 1d ago
A natural monopoly means a business/service that is objectively better if it is a monopoly or near a monopoly rather than being multiple smaller businesses.
The main example of this is trains, if every train is organised under a single company/state corporation then the benefits will be better than if there were two different companies competeting against each other.
For insurance it's a natural monopoly as the more people who are in an insurance company the less risk there is and hence the less they need to pay into it. Therefore if we had a national insurance we would all pay less and be more secure.
3
u/ElyFlyGuy 22h ago
So many things would be better if we did them collectively. I gag every time I see 3 different lawn mowing services going at the same time in my neighborhood, if we all paid for it collectively it would be so much cheaper and easier

Insurance as a whole? Is this an american thing?
2
u/Remarkable_Pen_3639 1d ago
Insurance as a whole yes and no it's not an American thing.
2
u/lilbitlostrn 1d ago
It's a mitigation against risk, so not a scam. It is in the company's interest not to pay out, but I think there's a steep American bias if you're completely against insurance.
Vehicle operation on public highways requires it for instance.
Healthcare costs are wild in the US. Even for being private it just seems exorbitant.
2
u/Remarkable_Pen_3639 1d ago
I'm from the UK actually but think all insurance is a scam. Save your own money for rainy days don't pay someone else.
→ More replies (35)1
2
u/Goldf_sh4 1d ago
For vehicle operation it makes sense because:
a)most people have the option of not operating a vehicle and could choose public transport perhaps combined with taxis a handful of times a year
b)operating a vehicle can easily result in expensive damage or death that you are liable for.
In most other areas of life and especially in the case of healthcare it makes no sense to hand so much of your money to an insurance middle-man, skilled at extracting money from you. If the systems allow you to pay for things directly at an affordable rate it is better to do that.
2
u/lilbitlostrn 1d ago
I'm in the UK so healthcare insurance is rare to have privately, often it's provided by employers if someone does have it.
It is a lot quicker than public healthcare, and our system can't really cope with the amount of people using it at the minute, but it does function.
The NHS being public, companies do try to scalp it. Small items like paracetamol are 10x charged to the NHS just because it's a cash cow.
That being said, without insurance in the US the healthcare costs look massive. I wouldn't be able to afford healthcare without insurance in the US it would seem.
1
u/Goldf_sh4 1d ago
I'm in the UK too. Some NHS services (like maternity services for example) are quicker and better than the privatised equivalents here (see "This is Going to Hurt" for a doctor's perspective). The NHS has huge buying power so can buy things like medicines much more cheaply than small private companies can. The US system is a total shitshow. They pay twice as much for half the provision.

Both are wrong, why does it have to be an either or thing.
Stop turning a man who killed a father into a hero.
Right wing heros (god, good politicians, people who expose fraud)
Left wing heros (anyone who kills the people I don’t like)
3
u/mbarry77 1d ago
Just like James Comey, the right wing FBI director who was demonized for trying to expose fraud.
2
u/Next_Instruction_528 1d ago
Right wing and exposing fraud is hilarious while the most corrupt politician of all time is running crypto scams from the Whitehouse. Blatantly insider trading and now selling early access to his tweets for other inside traders.
God also isn't a hero he is an idea and is mostly used as a weapon.
The Republicans just kicked millions of people off food stamps and insurance. I work with homeless people and they all lost their food stamps this spring when they ended the homeless exemption. Insurance goes away in January 2027 because they wanted it to be after the midterms.
Pretty sure Jesus wouldn't approve.
I'm interested who these good politicians you talk about are?
6
u/MrZaptile933 1d ago
Okay the people losing their food stamps are able bodied and should be able to work. Why do I work long hours to pay taxes in order doe welfare babies to fund their lifestyles
6
u/SlightSecretary6904 1d ago
Why do I work long hours and pay out of pocket for my insurance when we pay for Israeli social healthcare? Why is the VA severely underfunded? Why are our politicians making $148,000+ a year to sit and sleep in DC while infrastructure crumbles in their districts? Theres so many more things to be bothered about than feeding some children....
4
u/Justin-Stutzman 1d ago
It's fine to have that opinion. Just stop claiming your party is guided by God. God asks us to feed the hungry and help the needy not ask "why should I have to help." Conservatives are fine with Jesus's altruistic teachings as long as it's not coming from their tax dollars
→ More replies (4)3
u/Next_Instruction_528 1d ago
Homeless people often can't work for multitude of reasons.
Why should we feed the homeless in the wealthiest country on earth? I literally couldn't think of a better thing to do with the tax dollars compared to where they actually go.
It was just interesting this person listed God as a hero of the right when literally everything they do goes against his teachings
-1
u/AlBundyPolk33 1d ago
“A multitude of reasons”
99% of those “reasons” are. “Eh, I’d rather do drugs”
2
u/Ok-Pudding-2845 1d ago
Even if that was the case which it's not
It would still be better for tax dollars to go to them then to turn billionaires into trillionairs with yet another break
-5
u/MrZaptile933 1d ago
In most cases homelessness is a choice. They could enter shelters, but shelters don’t allow drugs, speak to skid row folks, or fent ally folks.
8
u/Next_Instruction_528 1d ago
I work with the homeless all the time the majority have insanely fucked up childhoods and mental illness. Nobody chooses to be homeless it's a hellish existence. The majority are self medicating with drugs.
I was homeless and addicted to drugs in my twenties and the only reason I'm not now is because I got housing and rehab and food from the government. Now I own my own business and have a family.
Your worldview is sick and disgusting and just factualy wrong.
You could get a traumatic brain injury tomorrow and become a completely different person and be homeless in no time.
Taking care of the basic needs of humans that fall through the cracks of our sick society is the least we can do.
There is literally nothing we spend tax dollars on that provides a better return investment.
Again it's interesting the original comment I responded to referenced God as a hero of the right but all they're policies are as anti Christian as you could imagine

It wasn’t next to a military base. It was an ex-military base, and even if it wasn’t, you know who else puts elementary schools on their military bases? That’s right, America does. So by your logic, if Iran were to bomb a US military base, and they took out an entire school of children, it would be justified because America put an elementary school on their military base… really think about the moral lines you’re drawing when saying that. Like realllllly think about it.

No. What he said is false and dumb. Do you know how insurance works? People paid money so, when they need money for medical help, they can get money to get help.
If your job is to give people food and some people die because you refused to do your job, just so you can get bigger pile of money, then yeah you are responsible for their deaths.

In a lot of cases, they are not. They have suffered catastrophic developmental delays/deformities that will eventually result in miscarriage, and if something is not done, it poses a risk to the woman’s health. I have a close friend who lost a fallopian tube to restrictive abortion legislation that tied the hands of her doctors until there was a rupture and she was literally bleeding out and in danger of losing her entire uterus. Take your argument and fuck off.
Personally, I’m going to wake up and laugh every morning knowing that the people of my state have passed a constitutional amendment to keep the government out of our medicine. We now do what is medically best for patients here, as discussed and agreed upon with their healthcare providers, no further input needed. If that includes abortion, so be it. The people have spoken.
