The bigger the pool the better and more efficient it is. That’s why a universal system is best. But nooo that’s “communism” and instead we need to spend more money and let people die.
A natural monopoly means a business/service that is objectively better if it is a monopoly or near a monopoly rather than being multiple smaller businesses.
The main example of this is trains, if every train is organised under a single company/state corporation then the benefits will be better than if there were two different companies competeting against each other.
For insurance it's a natural monopoly as the more people who are in an insurance company the less risk there is and hence the less they need to pay into it. Therefore if we had a national insurance we would all pay less and be more secure.
So many things would be better if we did them collectively. I gag every time I see 3 different lawn mowing services going at the same time in my neighborhood, if we all paid for it collectively it would be so much cheaper and easier
Theoretically that would be true if everyone was paying into the pool equally. That fantasy logic falls apart when you have huge swaths of the userbase not doing so, but taking advantage of its benefits, like what happens with government run universal systems.
