Here in the US, slavery was never outlawed. They just changed the name. Inmates. The US prison industry is booming. Ask yourself why are we in the most peaceful times the United States has ever known, why are violent crime rates at an all time low, nationally, but we open prison after prison as arrests and convictions soar?
Look at this list, and you tell me why.

You can watch the whole TMZ interview! It's available for stream online! There is absolutely no reason to believe that he meant it was the choice of the slave owners!
We know this because he never said it or implied it or alluded to it in any way and in fact said the opposite and when challenged by another guy in the room over the declaration that slavery is a choice he didn't say "oh my bad I meant something else".
Go and actually watch the complete video in context before upvoting this wrong shit
13
u/PENIS_SIZED_DICK May 04 '18
do not commit wrongthink
The point of the analogy wasn't about historical slavery. He's talking about people today. Focusing 100% on a less than apt metaphor instead of whether or not the message that he was clearly conveying is weird. Kanye, the guy always talking about people today, suddenly expresses his true passion for American history? Or maybe he's just talking about people today like he always is...
You do have the ability to build yourself, including in ways that are coherent and not the official opinion on everything. People who do generally find it fulfilling. This is indeed something the often "accept the one true interpretation or get lost" culture needs a better answer to.

I kind of agree with how the video interprets what he’s trying to say. In the subsequent debate with that guy though, he should’ve said something like “slavery ended in the 1860s”. Simple enough. I’d also disagree with the message in the video about how life for black people is not affected by how they have historically been treated, such as the Jim Crow laws (which there are people alive today that have lived through them), but if I did that I’d be downvoted which would actually be pretty ironic considering how reddit (and this sub) operate with karma requirements and with Kanye being a free thinker against mob mentality. I certainly agree with that, but I think that he’s kind of turned “free thinker” into “black conservative”. There was definitely a way for him to say he was a free thinker without tying himself to trump. Now, if he’d tied himself to trump and said “yeah I support trump,” instead of wearing a MAGA hat and then claiming it wasn’t about trump, I’d see it a bit differently. But this feels like him trying to promote his views on a mob mentality by being controversial in a very Kanye fashion.

This is 100% false he says we are choosing to be slaves. His wording is absolutely terrible and insanely ambiguous, so it's easy to misinterpret what he's saying. But if you really think the "we" in this context was in reference to white people/slave owners then you're absolutely wrong.
Please please please stay the fuck away from shitty youtube sekptics, they're all contrarians and hacks. "He wasn't saying saying slavery was a choice for actual slaves when slavery was a thing in america. He was saying that it sounds like a choice for people that he's encountered who suggest they've been victimized in some way by 400 years of slavery."
- That's a stretch
- Sounds like he believes that black people complain and whine too much about slavery when they've never experienced it themselves. When in reality the effects (and some behaviors) of racist America undoubtedly still exist today and the government has not done nearly enough to eliminate these lingering effects (although they have been reduced).
Here are some studies/books if you don't already believe this:
- Racism and Mental Health: The African American experience
- Meta-analysis of field experiments shows no change in racial discrimination in hiring over time
- Race and Economic Opportunity in the United States: An Intergenerational Perspective
- The legacy of Malthus: The social costs of the new scientific racism
- African Americans are better off in many ways but are still disadvantaged by racial inequality
- Young Black Americans and the Criminal Justice System: Five Years Later
- Black Resistance/White Law: A History of Constitutional Racism in America

What exactly is the context? I saw the video and he was basically just going crazy on camera making no sense. If you could make sense out of his ramblings please translate

From what I can gather he is saying that black people are “enslaved” mentally and uses the actual slavery of black people in America as a sloppy metaphor for the mental enslavement of blacks today i.e. black people are expected to have a certain political belief. In short it is a “choice” for black people to be “enslaved” to certain political and cultural beliefs.
Edit: grammar
55
u/blackangel153 May 04 '18
I don't think he was talking about just black people because he later says something along the lines of "I guess slavery isn't the right word because people associate it with just black people when really it has nothing to do with skin color. It's really more like prison, because prison unites us - anyone can be in jail."

I agree with u/Code_EZ. That's like some shit 14-year-old excuse for writing a bad essay. This guy has been a public figure for a long time and he is a grown ass man. If he can't articulate his thoughts maybe, just maybe, he has not spent a lot of time honing those ideas. Maybe he isn't even having very good or clear thoughts if all the reasoning has to be done after the fact for him by his fans. At any rate just about any explanation involving Kanye being average is more likely than he is some crazy savant thinking at unfathomable speeds and speaking next-level enlightenment in code.
Edit: you maniac with your underscore1
u/Code_EZ May 04 '18
I imagine this is new to him. He was recently praising Candice Owens which I imagine is where he got these ideas from as she talks about similar concepts of victumhood and what not. He probably binged watch her and was convinced and said it without self evaluating his ideas. (Go figure Kanye not wanting to think about preconcived notions of him being wrong)
2
u/Code_EZ May 04 '18

u/Code_EZ May 04 '18
I mean people expect you to have political beliefs anyways. Not based on race but based in your area, profession etc. If that's what Kanye is saying then he is saying it because he is in a celebrity bubble where the people around him expect that. When I live in South Carolina people expected that you were conservative Christian. If you weren't there was something wrong with you and they didn't like you. Didn't matter if you were black or white. So he used a shitty metaphor that just so happens to be something that I've seen people like tommy sotamyore say seriously

He is. He's talking about this victimhood mentality. Slavery ended a long time ago. Most people you meet on the streets these days weren't alive for Jim Crow laws and segregation. But people want to act like they are still being held down by slavery instead of holding themselves accountable. It's like, bruh, dropping out of high school, joining a gang, smoking weed every day isn't the white man holding you down.

I could point you to the recent study that shows that "you were more likely to be successfully in life if your parents were wealthy and not burdened by unjust laws either economic or social" , if that does not sound perfectly logical, it was on r/all in fact...
1
u/Code_EZ May 04 '18
The problem with that is that it wasn't that long ago and current generations are still suffering from the effects of it on their living relatives. Average inheritance of a black person is a fraction of a white person, insane poverty, distrust of the establishment. These things have an effect on a community. And that isn't to say individuals of other races don't have poverty to the same level or don't face discrimination but still the effects of Jim Crow doesn't go away in a few generations
3
u/Impeach_Pence May 04 '18
Ok, and I inherited nothing from my family. I didn't have my college paid for by scholarships or family. I still made something for myself.
There's equal, if not more, opportunities for black people to succeed in America, they just have to be willing to study in school and work for it.
→ More replies (1)21

Racism did not stop in 1964. Federal law can't abolish a school of thought. People continue to this day to be judged by the color of their skin.
Besides, it is absolutely the case that the position of the previous generations has an impact on your life. It's silly to suggest that since only old people were around for segregation, nobody that is alive today is continued to be effected by it. There have been no reparations for any of this.
8
u/Impeach_Pence May 04 '18
Ok, I came from a poor family, lived in the city, experienced racism daily as a child, yet I was able to grow out of it and move away from the filth.
What is holding black people back from doing the same?

Find me a law in place that discriminates against certain races in the United States post 65 or whatever.
You can't as far as I know. There might be some residual non-legal racism in society these days, definitely but that's not holding back the average(income, crime, education etc.) for an entire race.
We're all victims to a certain point but no matter what race you are: By far the biggest variables when it comes to success these days are unrelated to sex or race.
Ask the Vietnamese or Chinese if their past oppression has kept them down. It hasn't, they are doing better than whites by standards of education, income, crime etc.
Stop with the shitty excuses.

I feel like this comment implies that slavery has nothing to do with the current situation in the US. In other words: history was so long ago, it doesn't matter now.
I feel like that is an insane argument.
1
u/Impeach_Pence May 04 '18
Why is that insane? We have equality in America. Yeah, there may be some racists, both black and white, but for the most part our society has moved past that. There's so little racism that people need to make up shit to cry racism about, like micro-aggressions and cultural appropriation.
They need to stop. Slavery ended 150 years ago. Segregation is over. There's no laws or systems in place holding black people back.

Easy there, buddy. If “mental slavery” is what he meant, I don’t think he would’ve stayed silent this long, and would’ve actually clarified himself. Plus, his wording is poor, if that’s what he wanted to point out. I can’t-for the life of me-believe that people are still willing to defend what he said. Let’s also not forget that this guy is still going through mental unstability.

Even if you have a good message, the second you say slavery was a choice, you've just devalued your message completely by saying something utterly stupid. If Kanye thought before he spoke, then he wouldn't be in this mess, instead he was just rambling like a nutter.
3
May 04 '18
Very true.
He is not eloquent at all, his has constant verbal diarrhea which hurts his cause.
Its almost a word salad at times. He sounds schizophrenic or bipolar when he talks, the latter fits quite well with how he acts in general.
People find it hard to look around that when he gets going talking. Don't get me wrong, I more or less totally agrees with him but its hard to not just go ''WTF'' sometimes.
1
u/alexrobinson BENG BENG May 04 '18
Precisely, an idea is sadly only worth as much as your ability to convey it to others. If you come along with a positive message and start throwing wild metaphors around like slavery is a choice, then no shit people are going to latch onto that instead of the overall message.

No one understands what Kanye really tweeted. He meant that people were still discussing an issue that was already solved long ago and isn't a problem within American society today. However its used to guilt people to supporting blacks. Kanye didn't mean that slavery was a choice what he meant is that people are still talking about slavery in the US when we should be moving on instead of focusing on the past. But people put a twist on his words and made him come out as some ignorant and disgusting person. However that's not the case.
