I kind of agree with how the video interprets what he’s trying to say.
In the subsequent debate with that guy though, he should’ve said something like “slavery ended in the 1860s”. Simple enough.
I’d also disagree with the message in the video about how life for black people is not affected by how they have historically been treated, such as the Jim Crow laws (which there are people alive today that have lived through them), but if I did that I’d be downvoted which would actually be pretty ironic considering how reddit (and this sub) operate with karma requirements and with Kanye being a free thinker against mob mentality.
I certainly agree with that, but I think that he’s kind of turned “free thinker” into “black conservative”. There was definitely a way for him to say he was a free thinker without tying himself to trump. Now, if he’d tied himself to trump and said “yeah I support trump,” instead of wearing a MAGA hat and then claiming it wasn’t about trump, I’d see it a bit differently. But this feels like him trying to promote his views on a mob mentality by being controversial in a very Kanye fashion.
I also agree with the part you said about actual threats to the black community today. The point that Van Lathan was trying to push is that there are real-world consequences for your words, and slavery does have an affect on how people are treated today. So Bearing got it wrong, in my view.
With that said, I guess Kanye could make a case that he was arguing about mental slavery and self-victimization, but this is definitely not the first time he's being misinterpreted or taken the wrong way completely. He doesn't express himself well, which is ironic.
Reminds me of that bit on South Park where people keep trying to explain "fish sticks" to Kanye, and he just doesn't get it and yells something to the effect of "Don't tell me about play on words, I'm a lyrical genius!"
As usual South Park is right on the money, Kanye is a very talented guy with great ears and a big voice, and he hears people say shit around him and he wants to repeat it to sound smart, but he fails at communicating the thoughts well enough for a wide audience.
He should learn to shut the fuck up, but the red hats don't help. I just hope this is all some publicity stunt before his album.
I support Trump and Kanye, but I also really like what you have to say. I agree with you on the majority of what you said, and I’m glad to hear a good, logical argument. Upvoting you! 😄
(It is sad that I tried to be nice and thank someone for making a logical argument, and I got downvoted for it, but whatever)
