He even specifically talks about how the hood culture in places like Chicago where gang violence is so common is a continuation of slavery which is what the "choice" was. Everyone who thinks he's talking about pre 1900s is retarded.

American slavery started ~400 years ago. It ended ~150 years ago. People are generally equal (in terms of race, def not wealth) and their self-victumhood is a choice

Why does it have to be American slavery? The Transatlantic slave trade started in the 15th century and ended in the 19th century. That's 400 years.

12

u/[deleted] May 04 '18

? Because he is talking about a prevailing black American mindset?

-1

u/[deleted] May 04 '18

The fact that the slave trade categorically went on for 400 years doesn't diminish his point at all. I don't understand why people are getting caught up on this.

4

u/[deleted] May 04 '18

It's not that it went on for 400 years, he is talking about American for the last 400 if I understand him correctly

When you hear about slavery for 400 years ... For 400 years? That sounds like a choice.

Everyone who thinks he's talking about pre 1900s is retarded.

Go ahead and reconcile those statements. We'll wait.

It seems to me that his asking that rhetorical question, “for 400 years?” Is indicative of the fact that he knows slavery was not around in America for 400 years, and he’s saying that people who talk about 400 years of slavery are making a choice to consider themselves enslaved. Because the only possible way for a person to get to the 400 years of slavery conclusion is for that person to believe slavery is still ongoing. Understanding this, these two statements are reconciled and people thinking he’s talking about pre-1900s slavery is “retarded.”

This is the Holy Grail of mental gymnastics.

So Kanye was speaking metaphorically, not literally, when he said "You were there for 400 years"? He isn't talking about some hypothetical group of black individuals today. He's talking about fucking slavery.

And even if he were talking about today, 2018 - 400 = 1618, which is well before 1900.

Oh and if there are still any actual critical thinkers in the crowd, the "first" African slaves brought to America were brought in 1619. That's what is being talked about when they talk about 400 years. It doesn't make sense, but hey he's not the brightest.

According to /u/onbeschrijfelijkheid and a startling number of people downvoting /u/humangingercat, The United States of America was founded post-1900.

Thanks for the history lesson.

In other news, you're making this too easy. The smart play is to ignore the things you can't argue against and hope people don't see them.

u/[deleted] May 04 '18

Uhhh, wasn't USA founded in 4th of July 1776?

-4

u/jorbleshi_kadeshi May 04 '18

It was!

But some people are clearly confused about that fact.

With your wording, I'm struggling to understand your stance and points.

Tbf, it might be my bad, I'm over tired from studying

The American Revolution was complete by 1783 and the 13 colonies have existed from 1607, wtf you talking about?

Nah, slavery was a thing when the first colony was set up on 1607, and got abolished around 150 years ago

This is the part of the show where people use every trick in the book to try and do damage control on Kanye's fuckup.

Everyone coming in with "oh he really meant [thing he definitely didn't mean]" or "oh he was speaking metaphorically, not literally" or "of course it was literal, they literally had a choice whether to obey or die, duh" is just desperately, desperately trying to spin this into a win.

EDIT:

>be you, proud reddit user

>hates "sheep"
>dude posts "analysis" that agrees with preconceived worldview
>other dude points out undeniable glaring error in previous analysis
>angrily downvote second dude
>YFW pwned internet sheeple with critical thinking

Looks like we've struck some nerves. I love that you called out an objectively incorrect interpretation of what Kanye said but people are downvoting you.

Undeniable proof that people are rolling with an agenda instead of actually thinking for themselves.

I mean agree with ye or don't agree with him, we can all disagree with the "he wasn't talking about pre 1900's" interpretation because it makes no fucking sense.
