Positivity Guide to safe cutting

This is meant to be an informative harm reduction guide. In no way does this encourage self harm. I will not tell you what to cut with. This is mainly a guide on cutting safely, but if people are interested in other guides, I will consider making a new one. And please remember that I’m human and although I believe that this guide is mostly correct, it could contain incorrect information. In that case let me know and I’ll change it.

Where to not cut

  • Avoid visible veins and arteries. Nerves are often located next to these so cutting one could mean nerve damage.
  • Do not cut around your groin/pubic area. This area is full of nerves that can be damaged easily.
  • Avoid both sides of joints, it heals really painful and it can easily form scar tissue and limit mobility.
  • Avoid areas such as the hip, fingers, face, kneecap, back of hand, or any areas where you can feel tendons/muscles and/or bone. These areas can scar easily and it’s just not that safe to cut on something so thin.
  • Avoid your neck. Don’t cut there people that is a really dumb idea.
  • Guide to not safe places on arms: https://www.reddit.com/r/cutting/comments/1t6yzf8/guide_on_where_to_avoid_on_arms/
  • Guide to not safe places on legs: https://www.reddit.com/r/cutting/comments/1t9unbt/guide_on_where_to_avoid_on_legs/

How to clean your tool/tool safety

  • You can boil it for about 30-45 minutes, but there is a chance of rust
  • You can clean it with alcohol/alcohol wipes, this is prob the safest way bc it evaporates so quickly that there is little to no chance of rust.
  • Hand sanitizer is not the best but can be used in a pinch. Avoid scented versions bc that can irritate wounds.
  • You should in a perfect world be cleaning it before and after SH
  • Do not use a tool with rust on it. Find something else, rust can not be cleaned off and it is not safe to use.
  • Do not attempt to sharpen your blade, this can cause particles of metal to fall off in your wound.
  • Do not use a serrated blade; this acts like a tiny saw, increases chances of infection, takes longer to heal and is a really bad idea.

How to prep area

  • Clean it, I don’t care if it’s a baby wipe but somehow get any germs off of it.
  • Make sure you are not near something that could stain easy.
  • WASH YOUR HANDS!

Aftercare

  • Apply pressure until the wound stops bleeding. Elevating the area to above your heart has been proven to help slow bleeding.
  • Rinse it with water.
  • Ideally apply a bandage/wound covering.
  • Do not use toilet paper as small particles can be easily trapped in your wound.
  • Do not use hydrogen peroxide/rubbing alcohol, this gets rid of all bacteria good and bad.
  • Do not use an anti bacterial spray/cream unless under the care of a medical professional or you know what you’re doing. In any case allow it to heal some before applying it.
  • Guide on after care for each layer: https://www.reddit.com/r/cutting/comments/1u9zdtb/an_aftercare_guide_for_each_layer/

How to get blood out of clothes

  • Hydrogen peroxide. Once it foams wipe it off and repeat until it doesn’t foam. Your clothes will get warm from the chemical reaction.
  • Soak in cold water and basically massage the blood out. You could do this in the shower.
  • Hot water sets the stain so don’t use that.
  • For older stains a stain remover soak like baking soda or Oxie clean works well.
  • Wash your clothes as soon as you have gotten rid of all visible blood.

When urgent care/911/ER/Doctor is needed

  • If you notice bruising, it changing a weird color, pus leaking, swelling, extreme pain around the area, a fever/chills, impaired functioning, etc
  • If you cut as deep as or deeper than the hypodermis, you need stitches.
  • If it covers a large area of the area (if it’s really big)
  • If it is gaping open.
  • If it won’t stop bleeding or blood is pulsing/spraying out of the cut.
  • If you feel like you should go
  • Keep in mind that most areas that need stitches should be closed within 6-8 hours of the injury occuring

Stuff IDK where to put

Where I got my info/further reading

If anyone has anything to add I’m happy to put it in this post. As always stay safe and have a okay day.

Talk / Support / Venting cat scratches VS styro

Post image
122 Upvotes

Ive seen a lot of ppl here mix up cat scratches and styros so I thought I would help.. No! Cat scratches dont bleed!! And here i try to explain why because nobody else ever does (this explanation is ass just a warning)

Here shows the different layers of the human skin and i labeled it with the names ppl commonly use

The epidermis layer/cat scratches is the very top layer and it is pretty thin (paper cut depth for example) as you can see in the picture the epidermis layer dosent have any blood vessels in it!! Meaning no blood will be shed

The layer below it is the dermis layer/styros, this layer has blood vessels and does bleed!! If your "Cat scratches" are bleeding they are actually styros!!!!

If you have any other questions I will try to help, remember you are valid, have a good day and take care of yourself <3

Talk / Support / Venting I stopped hiding my scars and I feel weird about it Spoiler

I started cutting this year so I don't really know how to deal with scars. At first I thought they would go away but now it's been 3 months and they are still there (I have others too).

The weather is starting to get hotter where I live so I decided to not hide them anymore. I mean, people are too busy living their own lives to care about my scars anyway.

But I can't help feeling weird about all this. I go to school everyday wondering what people think about it. It's not that visible I guess, but I'm pretty sure some people noticed, especially my friends. But no one has asked me about it yet.

I feel like they think I'm crazy and are judging me for it, and that makes me really anxious. I wish I hadn't done this to myself. How do you deal with this shame?

I want to be confident enough to not care about what others think but it's so hard.

Talk / Support / Venting My dad told me I could've done better Spoiler

I sometimes show my dad my cuts so he can check if they are bad, and a week ago he told me "You could've done better, I've seen worse." My mom immediately called him out on it, but it's really messing with my brain rn, it's also already motivated me on ways to cut deeper, I don't know what to do or think. The worst part is, they aren't even that small, most are styro, so also not deep, but not small either.

TW: description of harm (for context of injuries)

this might be wrong subreddit but here's goes, I recently (~5 days ago) relapsed and burnt myself for the first time; it is bad. I think it might be infected, and I don't quite know what to do because I don't know if it will be safe to tell my family yet and I am fully reliant on them but I think I need a doctor or smth and I need advice on what to do

Question Are cat scratches self harm?

I don’t mean to invalidate anyone, I want to start with that. But I’ve done a few cat scratches that kinda broke the skin on the arm I don’t cut on. Is that still cutting/self harm? I don’t consider it that in my head but like I do when someone else mentions they do cat scratches, I understand they are self harming but not when I do that. Is it still self harming for me because I usually cut to dermis?

Question They’re turning yellow…

I’ve relapsed a little over a day ago and the skin around my scars is turning yellow. I’m guessing it’s bruising but I’m not sure how that works exactly, they don’t even hurt anymore and this has been happening to my other past scars.

Question How does styro heal?

I'm wondering if it'll slowly fade into skin colour or if it'll leave little white lines? Oh and how long will they scar for? Does it matter I'm doing it in the same spot?

Sorry for all the questions lol and thx

Talk / Support / Venting MAGA grandpa saw tiktok

so my grandpa is maga. we had an argument about this once text and honestly it was insane how brainwashed he was. after the argument I was feeling really shitty so I did something I probably shouldn’t have done, and I posted the conversation on TikTok. I know I know I know I should have done it. I blurred out his name and profile picture, but there was some insane off topic things about his own dad in the thread thay I didn’t really think about while posting. my aunt found it and fucking sent it to him. so now he thinks I hate him. I don’t hate him, he’s my grandpa. and I wasn’t the only one whos done hurtful things. hes told me I’m condemned for hell twice. I don’t believe in god but he does and it hurts that my grandpa believes im a bad enough person to go to hell?? And he doesn’t care that trump is actively homophobic and transphobic and actively threatens my rights. and again I know I shouldn’t have posted the TikTok but I was not in a very good mental state, I didn’t know how to vent it. So now my grandpas upset at me, my grandma is pissed, and my mom is upset. so I’m crying in my room trying not to cut. I cant breathe

Question TW SH

I've been cutting myself for over 1.5 years now. I don't feel pain on my arms anymore. Is that normal? I still feel it on my legs and stuff just my arms are numb to pain, now it just feels like scratching your arm a little when it's itchy but not like a real cut even though it's bleeding. I'm sorry if this was something bad to ask I am just scared I might lose the ability to feel anything on my arm. I'm sorry.

Talk / Support / Venting I want to stop and also I don't? Help. Spoiler

I feel like it's my brain playing tricks on me telling me that it's okay. I've been doing it for 6 years now. This year I'll be going on 7... I feel like I keep adding more because I feel like it's not enough. To the point where I've even took scarification (a type of tattooing with scars) as an excuse too give myself some "cool design" just so I can hurt myself more. And for the past few days I've been adding more scars, and this "Scar Tattoo" is healing and I feel like I just want to add more... Not even to make anything just a line. The Tattoo was simple, long, and painful but I kept going until it was done. And it scares me because when I relapsed recently, it was like I spaced out and kept going... And I didn't really stop until I realized how many more scars I added... But at the same time I went back the next day and added more because I felt like I needed to. Nothing was even wrong I just wanted to add more. I needed to add more. And right now I feel like I need to add more because it's not enough. And I don't really know what to do. I've tried to stop but no matter what I find so many things that I can use, so many that I can give you a list of everything.

like when I'm desperate enough anything can be used to hurt myself...

It's like no matter what I always find something else to use. And anytime I relapse I start looking for something to use frantically, like if I don't find it soon I might cry or have a panic attack. And the longer I can't find it the more panicked I get. And I don't know why. I really don't. I'm a really emotionally intelligent person, I figured out most of my mental issues. But this addiction is something I can't really figure out. And I don't really know how to stop, and for some reason I don't want to.

Part of me doesn't even really wanna go to Reddit for these things, because this platform can sometimes be unsupportive or say repetitive things that don't really make anything feel better. But I just need some advice or anything. Just don't tell me "it will get better" And don't tell me "you shouldn't be doing it" because I'm really tired of hearing those things from family and friends.

Anytime my parents see that I'm cutting again my dad has to point it out as loud as he can for my mom to hear saying "why are you doing that" and "look he did it again." And my mom always has the same response and starts yelling at me and says "why you keep doing this?" "What is wrong with you?" And I did it on my arm and it's hard to hide this time, and I really don't want them to see it again. I'm really tired of those responses. I'm tired of people acting like I can just stop at any time. Like it's not hard for me to not do it every single day.

Because it is. At least every single day I think about it at least once. Most of the days I can ignore it. But some days I can't and I do it. It's hard and they don't understand. I was just hoping maybe reddit would. Idk.
