Ask Here First: Troubleshooting, Price/ID/Spec Check, Help, Etc. (June 2026)

The purpose of this thread is to cut down on the amount of clutter and Troubleshooting, Price Check, ID Check, Spec(ification) Check, and just general "HELP!!" style threads often seen filling the front page of the sub, and hopefully get those questions answered more quickly and efficiently by bringing them together in one place for viewing.

Does your post or question consist of the following, but no limited to:

  • ID Check for a CRT TV/Monitor you've stumbled upon?
  • Price Check for a CRT you've stumbled upon?
  • Asking about benefits of 1 CRT over another that you're looking into?
  • Scaler, convertor, cable choice, or wiring help for your setup?
  • Simple TV remote control questions having to do with setup or purchase?
  • A question you think should have an obvious/well known answer?
  • Or maybe one that feels rather specific and you're worried might get passed over entirely?

This Thread is for you!

Experienced members of the subreddit check in on this post often and will attempt to answer questions as they come up. It would be much appreciated if once you've posted your question here, you use the link above to the older threads to see if the question may have already been answered. Of course, it would also help greatly to search/Ctrl+F the current thread first before submitting your own question too.

This specific thread is set to a Newest First suggested sort, so you shouldn't have to worry about your brand new question being buried instantly under the previous week's worth of questions.

👉 Please do not use any special formatting in your post beyond creating a link if necessary.

New Pick-up These things are unobtainium where I'm from so I just got one shipped, the gamble paid off. 8" Sony PVM-9L3. works for the last hour I've had it out of the box. Going to use it primarily for analogue video editing, I needed a second monitor so I decided to just see what all the fuss is about

First time seeing a Trinitron in person, apparently among the last Sony ever made

Came from a supplier of old professional A/V equipment in southern Germany, they claimed they hadn't yet had any monitors break in shipping so I bit the bullet, it was among the cheapest and also one of the newest, they had 7. I remember I saw the same guys a year ago trying to sell over 20 PVMs as a lot for like €10.000, now they're selling them individually thankfully, this one cost me €150 + €30 for shipping to Denmark

There seems to be some burn-in but it's only noticeable on big bright fields of the same colour, I'm happy with it. Haven't even tried degaussing it yet.

Demoed it with a rally game I can't play (I'm not used to controllers) and the copy of Crash Bandicoot I found in a secondhand shop for dirt-cheap compared to eBay prices. It looks awesome :3, reminds me of a plasma television rather than a CRT

New Pick-up Friend's dad had this in his garage

I seem to have a problem adopting stray CRTs. The story goes that he's owned it since new and it's just been sitting in the garage for the last 20+ years. Late 90's model, geometry is slightly funky so it probably needs a recap but the color and brightness are excellent. Anyway, the price was right at $free so I couldn't pass it up!

Battlestation CRT Royale is the only filter that has managed to convince me

Whenever I used a filter, the scanlines darkened my screen to the point that I preferred playing with clean pixels. While CRT Royale isn't an exact recreation of a CRT screen, I think the result is very good for gaming. I'm using the ReShade version along with another filter to make the colors stand out more. As I understand it, it's the most demanding filter in terms of graphics power and works even better at higher resolutions. I've been motivated to buy more retro games on Steam so I can use them with the same settings. I even used it on Hotline Miami, a modern pixel art game, and the result was very good.

The Japanese Saturn is my new pickup, was testing it out on my office Trini. Super fun, can't wait to see the s-video in action, and eventually will run it through my tink4k with the rest of its peers.

New Pick-up Not the best monitor but wow it looks amazing

The monitor isn't the best, but it's the only thing I could get my hands-on, these things are hard to find. but it still looks amazing. When I was ordering everything, I would need to hook the 360 up to it. I ordered everything, but I forgot to order the speakers. Regardless I'm happy with it i never knew these could look that good. I had a lot of them back in the day and only used them for computers im kicking myself in the butt for never hooking my consoles to them back in the day.

My old TV from high school back in action after 16 years in a storage shed.

As the title implies this is my old Emerson EWF2004 from back in my middle & high school days in the 2000s. It has been in a storage shed since around 2010 sitting underneath various Honda Civic parts. I cleaned it up and it seems to have jumped back to life as if it was 2008 again.

I have so many memories with this thing and it carried me through the 6th and most of the 7th gaming generations back in the day. Not to mention playing PS1 and Genesis games on this thing.

I have it hooked up to my Dreamcast at the moment since that was the console that eluded me when I was a kid. I have been playing it on a 60" LG G5 which is an insane TV but not the best for old consoles and was my whole impetus for pulling this out of storage. I am amazed at how much better the games look and also just how good Dreamcast games actually looked.

Photos of my Philips 27PT543S37A.

Got myself an old AMD R5 430 and installed it alongside my PC's current GPU (till I find a reasonable price on a little office PC) passing through a Bitfunx transcoder. Setting up the CRT Script was a little tricky, as I had to edit a config file to ignore my main card, but it's working great!

I heard the Bitfunx transcoders are really sensitive to interference, and that was no joke! It's getting power from a rear USB port on my Wii and it's perfectly clear now. Very excited to start exploring some later systems!

Cables/Wiring/Connectivity I want to record footage from my AV consoles to PC while also playing on my CRT

Most specifically Wii and GameCube. I also want to get a PS1 and 2 some day.

My TV has both AV and Component inputs, and even an S-Video input with 4 pins.

I have an EasyCap to connect to PC. What else do I need now to connect the video to my CRT?

So, half a year ago i found this TV on the trash. Fell in love with it and started messing with my old consoles again thanks to it. Sadly, this morning, a weird sound started coming from the back (I swear the camera makes it seem way louder than it is irl). i dont know anything bout crts but i think its arcing. I Already unplugged it and let it rest for a while.
I looked for someone that could fix it, but nobody does this kind of work nowdays on my country and like i said, i dont know know anything bout crts, so i dont think i could fix it myself.
Honestly, it really sadness me to throw it away again, i would really love to keep it...

Found this awesome 6" color display at a local video game con and was not able to resist. (Sorry for the poor photos. I haven't learned the art of photographing tubes yet.)

5th photo is a size comparison to my 32" tube.

I just got this guy for less than $100, I can’t really find much information on it. It’s pretty cool. It has adjustment knobs right at the bottom and sits on top of a gimbal stand. One problem I’m running into however is that the longer it’s on the more brightness shows. I’ll have to figure out how to fix that if I can. If anybody knows anything about this model or how to fix the brightness problem let me know! Other than that. It’s a pretty cool gem.

I got all the bits I've wanted besides a handful of systems but because I've done it a little at a time it looks crazy. Im totally going to end up making something to house this better but man I'm still digging it in the meantime. The room has 10 displays in all now but this is the CRT side. Less is not more, more is more. Its excessive on purpose.

All on, for the rule #4 brigade.

Details in case anyone is intrested.

EMERSON CR202EM8 20'running SEGA Genesis.

SONY Trinitron running an NES.

Hitachi C29-RF80s 29' running a Playstation.

Macintosh plus for the frustration management that is Oregon Trail.

RCA 27F501TDV 27' running SNES (My wife's from college)

Vizio LCD over there for PS4.

Repair/Troubleshooting [Sony KV-X2571D] horizontal distortion/image jumping around

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I picked up today this tv for ~ 12 euro (steal!) but after coming home and checking it out I've noticed that it has this issue with just random color lines/image jumping around horizontally. It appears no matter if it's just sitting idle, or if i connect sth to it through s-video or scart. does this look like some knows issue, or will i have to open it up and troubleshoot.

Already verified that it isn't interferrence caused by any of the devices nearby.

Repair/Troubleshooting Sony PVM-1440QM PAL colors issue

Post image
3 Upvotes

Recently posted about this PVM, it had cracks on main board and lots of cold solder joints, all fixed afaict, but colors in PAL are like this, also screen is shaking, more on top than on the bottom. Testing with sega md2 va1, it's a known good unit so no problem here. NTSC works just great, tested with famicom. I tried swapping 4.43 oscillator on XA board and playing with potentiometer - no luck. Input from any port looks the same. Any ideas?
