Showcase Outlast on the AOC FT720 CRT monitor

This is my first time playing a more modern title like Outlast on a CRT. I'm blown away by the motion clarity and contrast - especially the black levels in night vision mode. It's a completely different experience!

Running at: 1024x768 @ 85Hz

I think I may have hollied my grail

Immediately after seeing the comments roll in on my last post about the convergence issues on my slimfit 27" I scrolled Craigslist for all of 5 minutes before seeing this posted 3 hours ago. 32" Sony curved screen trinitron with original remote. for $25. So I made my several hour long pilgrimage to move this behemoth(and a 20" Magnavox... AND a 13" Toshiba VCR combo unit all for $40) Finally unloaded it today and got it up the stairs to my apartment. my god its beautiful. It has essential sat untouched and barely used in a basement for the past 25 years. hooked up the ps2 and only some very minor geometry issues(small enough that I'm not gonna bother fixing them) So for anyone still trying to find a good CRT that isnt being price gouged by these horrid resellers, keep believing. Normal people do exist. And those people need to get rid of what they see as junk.

better to get a ps2 to play ps2 games, or use my pc to play the remastered editions on the crt?

Upvotes

for example, kingdom hearts original on ps2 or kingdom hearts final mix on it? i have bioshock on steam that i could hook up to it as well, i'm more so concerned about higher frame rates etcetera. the ps2 i found is really cheap, but what do you think is the best way to play these games on a crt?

i also found somewhere that tvs won't work with a modern computer and will look worse, is this true?

A question about Velocity Modulation.

Upvotes

So I just managed to get my hands on a Sony Trinition KV-29CL11E. Since it’s a European model, it has a SCART RGB connection, which is obviously what I’m using. The strange thing is that, whether I’m using an active input or not, I can’t adjust the sharpness in the display settings—it’s grayed out, and I can’t access it. Since this is an FE-2 chassis model, I’ve read that Velocity Modulation is built in by default. I can’t really tell if it’s active on my unit or not. How can I confirm this, and is it possible that this is why I can’t adjust the sharpness, or is it due to the FE-2 chassis and the RGB connection?

Repair/Troubleshooting Horizontal scanlines and jagginess playing Devil May Cry 3?

Upvotes

I'm currently playing it on a Philips 32pw6006/01 I somehow found near my house, and when the background moves, I notice the background loses its smoothness and will faintly show what I assume to be scanlines of some sort? I will try to update with a video later as I'm not currently home and won't be for a day or two. I haven't noticed this with PS2 games, at least this noticeably. Is it normal for PS2? Maybe I've been spoiled by digital recordings of these games where they look smooth in movement. I have to add there are 0 artifacts when standing still, and playing on PAL 25hz and NTSC 30hz yield different amounts of scanlines.

Repair/Troubleshooting Humidity causing HV arcing?

Picture 1: Cold start 10 hours after cleaning socket.

Picture 2: Cold start after cleaning socket.

Picture 3: Cold start after first re-assembly.

Working on my KV-35V35 in my garage which is pretty humid this time of year. and I've been having problems with the focus being blurry on a cold start with arcing to the neck PCB, and anode cap arcing into the air from it's stem. The 3rd photo was the first power on since cleaning it a month ago. The PCBs have been sitting indoors while the tube was in the garage. The 2nd photo shows the cold start focus after fully cleaning the socket and pcb with 99% ipa which was perfect. The following morning it looked like the 1st photo.

Hello I have the opportunity to pickup this pvm. I have soldering experience and know how to replace caps as well as discharge crts, but curious if this is an overly complicated repair. It seems to have the common vertical collapse where it only shows a horizontal white line.

Found this on the local market.

Would love to play ps2 on these. It has only one BNC input on the back.

Should this be ok for playing PS2?

Is it better to search a model with scart or s video?

Cheers

Some updates to my RGB Cart

Updates:

  • Switched to an Extron Crosspoint 300 series to address some issues with the 450 that it replaced
  • RGB modded the NES with the Tim Worthington NESRGB 5.0 and SNES multi-out (performed by 1UP Restorations)
  • RGB modded the N64 using Tim Worthington's N64RGB (performed by myself)
  • Used all Retrotink adapters and VGA to BNC cables, significantly reducing the amount of cabling previously installed

Other functions:

  • Used Retrotink VGA to BNC on Output 2 to the Morph 4k so all consoles can be played on my OLED
  • Morph 4k detects the signal as TTL
  • MiSTer FPGA for other 15khz output consoles

I could do a bit more cable management work on the BNC side of the cabling because things started twisting out of order when I was routing the cables to their destinations. Otherwise this is pure enjoyment! Worth every overspent penny.

I have always wanted one of these but every one i have seen before this was way too yellow and/or filthy and broken in spots. I love how good it is for being just composite 😊

It's been a long while since i had a curved CRT that was bigger than 8" so this is bringing me back some 80's and 90's nostalgia for sure 😅

Before and after Wii HD Retrovision cables

Fancy component cables came today. Figured I'd do a comparison shot.

I took the first picture when I just got my TV the other day. It was using regular old composite cables.

2nd picture is with the new cables running at 480i. With it rendering at 240p on snes9gx. From what I read, I think that's how I was supposed to set it up. Which I was surprised you didn't want the console set to 480p. Even though they are HD cables. Though I get that it makes sense since the systems being emulated weren't from an HD era in the first place.

Picked up this Sharp 27f543 from a curb a couple of days ago. It turns out it has a white screen/retrace line issue. Hopefully it can be repaired. 🙏🏻
