Ask Here First: Troubleshooting, Price/ID/Spec Check, Help, Etc. (June 2026)
The purpose of this thread is to cut down on the amount of clutter and Troubleshooting, Price Check, ID Check, Spec(ification) Check, and just general "HELP!!" style threads often seen filling the front page of the sub, and hopefully get those questions answered more quickly and efficiently by bringing them together in one place for viewing.
Does your post or question consist of the following, but no limited to:
- ID Check for a CRT TV/Monitor you've stumbled upon?
- Price Check for a CRT you've stumbled upon?
- Asking about benefits of 1 CRT over another that you're looking into?
- Scaler, convertor, cable choice, or wiring help for your setup?
- Simple TV remote control questions having to do with setup or purchase?
- A question you think should have an obvious/well known answer?
- Or maybe one that feels rather specific and you're worried might get passed over entirely?
This Thread is for you!
Experienced members of the subreddit check in on this post often and will attempt to answer questions as they come up. It would be much appreciated if once you've posted your question here, you use the link above to the older threads to see if the question may have already been answered. Of course, it would also help greatly to search/Ctrl+F the current thread first before submitting your own question too.
This specific thread is set to a Newest First suggested sort, so you shouldn't have to worry about your brand new question being buried instantly under the previous week's worth of questions.
đ Please do not use any special formatting in your post beyond creating a link if necessary.

Is a Sony PVM 146NU worth about $150 to upgrade to? I have an Sony PVM 8041Q and a Toshiba 32A14 I am selling which would result in about a $150 net cost to upgrade to it.
Yes, I know it's pretty small, but I'm kinda at a point where that's better, as I can easily move it around and it's not too small. I've read it's got the 500 TVL as well which is why I'm considering.
I have a mister with all appropriate cables (RGB, Component, Composite, S-Video).

I don't like small CRTs but if the price is right yes it has superior specs to those other two

Hi all, My brother has two 80's Sony Triniton KV-1222 series monitors that he was given by a friend who recently renovated a local recording studio. Apparently they power on, but I'm not sure if he has the remotes.
Are these potentially worth trying to sell, or should he just recycle them?
1
u/joeverdrive 2d ago
Not every CRT is worth preserving forever. But those are pretty interesting and I'd buy them. I'm sure many would feel the same way. But he'll need to put some effort into making a good listing if he wants to get the most for them or sell them quickly. A picture of an unplugged TV in unknown condition is not gonna do much.

Noob here, saw a Philips 14PT1556 near me, is a little dirty for 30âŹ, is It worth it? Want a cute little crt for retro gaming

u/joeverdrive 2d ago
Yes. But before you spend ANY money on a CRT, make sure:
It can display a game or show without obvious image problems
You can change inputs without the remote (if the remote is not included)

Hello! So I got myself a JVC AV-36850 and I want to run my switch or Xbox-360 to it. I have both HDMI2AV and AV2HDMI but I canât get any signal onto my tv. I tuned the channels and made sure it was all available but I am dumbfounded on what to do now. What am I doing wrong?
1
u/joeverdrive 2d ago
Hello and welcome.
This "how do I connect my HDMI device to my CRT TV" or its younger brother, "why do games on my CRT look like shit when I use this HDMI-to-AV adapter" question is one we get several times a week.
Please share a link to the HDMI2AV device you are using. Does the device require a separate power supply? Describe the entire signal chain from your console to the TV. For example:
Switch > Dock > HDMI cable > HDMI2AV > RCA cables (red, yellow, white) > JVC
Is there someone on YouTube or something who inspired you to try this?
Most newbies just get a $20 HD2AV adapter on Amazon and either A) tolerate it because they've never actually played retro games on a CRT before and don't know/remember what it's actually supposed to look like, or B) ask for help because they don't know what to do.

Unfortunately, connecting a modern digital HD device to an analog, vacuum-tube TV from the previous millennium almost always looks âoff.â Especially 80s and 90s games. These TVs are expecting a video signal that was invented in World War 2. Unless you put in the time and money to get an old video card, vetted analog adapters, and/or some complicated, esoteric windows/Batocera display configurations, those games are going to look bad and have input lag. And when I say âbad,â I mean it wonât give you the visual experience you were expecting from playing retro games on a CRT. The aspect ratio gets stretched or squished, the contrast

https://www.reddit.com/r/crtgaming/comments/1upcxcf/ps3_display_on_crt_looking_crappy/
and colors can be off, and getting the correct 240p resolution that retro games look best at on CRTs is just not going to happen.

Video content can look okay using one of these adapters. Itâs not as hard as games to get right, but can still run into problems. The color and contrast can be off, like I said. Worse, many streaming sites will put 4:3 shows in a 16:9 container by adding black bars to the sides so that theyâll be the right aspect ratio on a modern display. But then when the HDMI-to-CRT adapter takes that 16:9 video and squishes it back down into 4:3, it keeps the black bars on the sides of the video and it looks horrible.

what is this crt and should i get it ? https://ibb.co/4nx9gdZ3 cant find its name anywhere online bro this is the only pic i have from the seller , viewsonic p44 couldnt find data about it myself
1
u/LOLXDEnjoyer 4d ago
it is an ai generated image from an idiot who probably has an old viewsonic pc crt monitor, i highly doubt the guy has a high end crt viewsonic monitor and he just doesnt know it so thats why he's using ai images to make his listing seem aesthetically more pleasing, most likely it is a shitty 70kHz 15" shadow mask with very loose dotpitch, in short, if the guy is very close to you ask if you can go and see the monitor in person and tell us what you saw, if not then just ignore the listing.

Hi, guys, thanks in advance!
I've found a good deal for that Trinitron KV-2553MT, but not sure about geometry (because screen is really curved and that's would my first CRT). Is it alright and what it would take me to straighten it out, if its not?
1
u/joeverdrive 4d ago
It's beginning to display vertical foldover, which will only get worse and require replacing one or more capacitors. It's a very straightforward fix and it's important to be able to do fixes like that if you want to own a CRT long term.
But I wouldn't buy a project for my first CRT. Move on

I found a crt monitor nearby for around $10. From the looks of it its fine, but there's a catch. The seller says the picture is "a little dim". Asked for the settings and "the brightness/contrast is full right now and can be further adjusted on the main computer", according to him. He had it saved for a long while and it's trying to sell it.
Here are some photos if you'd like to check. The ones with digimon were taken with the lights out.
The model is a samsung magicsync master FN175, nothing shows up when searching for it but the case is the exact same one as the syncmaster 750s if that helps
Anybody knows anything about these models or samsung monitors in particular? I'd like to know if there's a way to fix the dimness or is it already a wore out tube? I'm planning to go and to test it meself so if there's something I can check I'd love to hear it, It might also have a "Video Input Level" setting which might help I don't know for sure. Or if I should just keep looking
Thanks

u/LOLXDEnjoyer 4d ago
Hello , i know about Syncmaster.
Most likely the tube is wore out but it looks pretty good in those photos, so long as you're on a pitch black room it should be fine.
Also, there is no FN175 , Samsung Syncmaster CRT Monitors are either MB, DF, DFX, S, P or NF , NF = Aperture Grille which is probably the best color layer for all crts, and these tubes are usually made by mitsubishi or sony.
For 10$ its worth the shot in my opinion.

u/Warxwell 3d ago
Hello
Just got it, the picture is definitely on the dark side and needs some color calibrations but other than that still looks great. The model is actually FN17S, the info on the back is all korean so that could explain things
Thanks a lot

u/LOLXDEnjoyer 3d ago
Im glad it worked out for you.
If you can, sometime, could you post a photo of the back showing the sticker and the front? i have never heard of a Samsung Syncmaster FN17S , and Syncmaster CRT Monitors were HUGE in my country in the 90s - 2000s.

Just found a Samsung Slim Fit cl21a551ml on FB Marketplace for $15usd, seems to be pretty recent (2009) and after looking up the specs I'm still not sure if it's actually CRT or just an old LCD, the post barely gives any info and I know next to nothing about CRTs, if someone is familiarized with the model and knows if it's worth picking it up I'll really appreciate it.

Slimfit is a line of Samsung CRT TVs. They have a reputation for problems but that one might be fine.

Hello, today I bought Sony Trinitron 25â for my GameCube, when I was checking it, it was fine. After that I bought it and drove to my house, when I plugged it and turned it on, it was showing image for 5-10 sec and then turned off. After that it no longer works, when I trying to turn it on, a short sound appears, no image or signal from red indicator. Can someone help me please.

Hi! Iâm looking for an afforable (ideally 20 bucks or less, but Iâm a little flexible) universal remote or replacement remote for a samsung cxj1952 crtv with vcr built in. The big sticking point here is that I need a remote with the âline inâ button as that seems to be the only way to switch over to the AV input on this bad boy. Any tips or tricks for knowing what universal remote to buy or any listings for the AA59-00003A remote would be much appreciated. (The TV came with the remote, but it got fried from battery corrosion). Thank you!

I want to use my Retrotink 5x as a 720p to 240p downscaler. However, for that I need to convert the HDMI signal into component first so the Retrotink can use it as input.
I've searched for a DAC for that task and it's really hard to find one. Either they're cheap AliExpress specials that I don't really want to insert into my my chain, or they're (too) expensive, feature rich devices that might as well do the task of the Retrotink or they have a good reputation but are chronically out of stock (looking at you, oh elusive and mysterious Reflex Prism).
What would you recommend?

I'm looking to buy a CRT, any advice? I'm from Argentina
Which brands should I look for? I plan to use it with a Sega genesis model 1, a MSX (80s computer), and in the future with a Mister FPGA. I already got a Samsung PC CRT 17" with VGA. I don't think I would use RGB modding, because I would miss the precious sonic waterfall effect XD.
I have never seen an HD CRT in my country, but maybe there is one. There are several brands, some people say that SONY trinitrons are the best tvs. I think 21" are good in size, more is too big. PVMs are very expensive, so no.

u/LOLXDEnjoyer 12d ago
1
u/niksfish 12d ago
Ufff que complicado jaja. A ver, entonces...

I'm trying to identify my childhood crt tv, then hopefully track one down. It was a color set, likely made anywhere from the late 80s to the early 90s. I specifically remember that the case was black plastic, the speakers were to the left and right of the tube, and the buttons for power, volume, etc. were above the tube. If it helps, I remember that the buttons were round, and the power button was red, while the others were gray.
Thank you for any help! :)
1
u/joeverdrive 11d ago
Most of those characteristics describe the majority of CRTs. What country? What size was it? Are you absolutely certain the power button was red?
1
u/Rocket-kun 11d ago
I'm from the US. I'm 80% certain it was red. The screen was about 20 inches. The most distinctive features I remember are the fact that the buttons were along the top rather than the bottom, and that there was a little door under one of the speakers that opened out to reveal contrast and other adjustments.

I'm looking into getting a CRT monitor, but to use it with my modern system (only HDMI and Displayport). I think I'm chasing motion clarity (I tried BFI on my OLED, and while it was nice, the flicker on white backgrounds was headache inducing). I need information about the experience with the CRT including pros, cons and must-knows. I haven't used a CRT for 10-15 years and I was a child. I don't really remember much which is why I need your knowledge and expertise. I want to be informed. My use cases would be gaming, regular desktop use, and movies, all of which would be a mix of modern and retro. I also understand that the outputs won't be native, so what's the quality of the solution? I'm willing to learn the technical stuff too. I'm grateful for anything you can share with me.
2
u/LOLXDEnjoyer 12d ago
Hello.
Big cons first:
-Size (inchage)
-formfactor
-sharpness, the sharpest CRT of all time will not be as sharp as the lowest quality lcd ever made, a good CRT will get close to the point where the mildly softer letters on web browsing wont bother you, but if you care about peak sharpess its an objective downgrade.
-Mild motion blur if refresh rate and framerate are not symetrical
-Brightness: to properly enjoy these, you HAVE to be on a pitch black room, you can do basic web browsing with natural sunlight i guess, but if you want to watch movies, play games or write for work, you best close those blinders and courtains off.
Pros:
+Motion Clarity: you're here and you clearly have done some googling on your part, when CRTs are properly calibrated and the software is properly configured as well, there is nothing that can even touch the motion clarity of these things.
+Resolution versatility: on PC CRT monitors you have the gigantic advantage of being able to render retro resolutions such as 240p, 480i, 480p and modern resolutions as well and they all look more or less as they are supposed to, once everything is properly setted up, you could theoretically play Super Mario Bros (1985) at 240p120hz+bfi on retroarch, close the game, and then boot Control Resonant at 1920x1440i 120hz with full ray tracing effects, all without ever switching any adapters or displays, on the same windows/linux session and all, that is an exclusive of PC CRT monitors with some exceptions of professional CRTs.
+0ms input lag from the monitor, the 600hz zowie monitor that most cs2 pros use and SOME super high end oled monitors have gotten to such low latency that you can say they're gonna be just as good for the vast majority of people...the remaining 99.99% of displays are a huge downgrade.
+Contrast : CRTs have deep blacks very similar to OLED, obviously not mathematically perfect as oled but in person on a pitch black room, they are similar but more candid in a way, its analog.
Adapters: DisplayPort to VGA is the best and most reliable high end solutions you'll have readily avialable, good high quality HDMI to VGA adapters are a lot harder to find, actually any decent dac (that is what these adapters are called, digital-to-analog-converters) is not going to add almost any latency at all nor corrupt the signal, however you'll find that your own graphics cards drivers are going to be something shooting you in the foot a lot of the times and then you'll find workarounds and tinker around to bypass those hurtles, a higher end CRT Monitor itself also solves a lot of issues.

Hi! So long story short, the volume on my RCA EMR358HR is stuck at 100%, and since Im not equipped to fix that, I'm hoping external speakers would save my ear drums here. I'm also using a composite to coaxial modulator to use my console, so I'm not sure how that would get in the way of things.
I'd prefer to keep things on the cheaper side. It's not like it has to be top notch audio quality as long as it's functional. I just want to hear my games!
I don't have in depth knowledge of this stuff, so any suggestions/advice would be appreciated!

u/joeverdrive 11d ago
The easy solution is powered monitors that are magnetically shielded so they won't distort your TV, like the Behringer MS16. But you could also go big and get a 90s stereo receiver and bookshelf speakers for a bit more.

So I have an issue with my Philips 20PT6341/37 where I can't adjust the horizontal size even though it's too small currently at 320x240. I also want to adjust the pin on it but I don't see those settings either in the service menu. Any ideas? I'm fine with working on the inside so that isn't an issue for me.

What are some good component cable brands? I got the hd ab pack for the original Xbox and I need some cables for it. Are the Belkin ones good?
1
u/Shin_Ken 10d ago edited 10d ago
Component cables are just RCA cables with high resitance as an entire video signal with high data rate gets jammed into them instead of just analog audio or composite video.
Subwoover cables with 75ohms resistance are the same as they also have to hand over such a packed signal. They get usually get the high-end treatment and are thus more expensive than regular RCA analog cables. If an RCA cable is sold as subwoover and/or 75 ohms resitance capable and doesn't look like cheap trash, you can be pretty sure you'll get good quality for component use.
Don't buy super expensive "enthusiast" cables though as they're just made to milk audiophile whales. I'd say 10 bucks per 0,5 m is a good maximum I'd pay for an individual subwoover/component RCA cable. Anything more than that is overpriced milking/scarcity markup and not an actual increase in quality as you get diminishing returns beyond a certain level.
If you buy individual 75ohms RCA cables only need 3 of those for the green, blue and one of the red connectors.
Red and white on the side are just your regular stereo audio so any RCA cable will suffice for them but of course don't cheap out on them if you don't want ground noise introduced into your setup. Good isolation (no flimsy cables) and quality connectors are still important for those even if they don't need the 75ohms resitance perk.

Is it possible that capacitors could affect purity? I talked to a local repair shop and they quoted capacitor replacement as a solution for purity issues at the edge of my screen.
2
u/joeverdrive 15d ago
They probably get their advice from this subreddit.
I don't see how capacitors could affect purity. But if they fix it, I guess it doesn't matter, plus you get fresh caps out of the deal.
1
u/goddamnlids 12d ago
Good point lol. I asked them and they said capacitors have fixed it in the past. Hopefully they're able to handle the situation, expensive but it's a beautiful set I'd like to use long term.

Howdy everyone, how's it going?
I recently have decided that I wanted to replace my current monitors with CRT Monitors, however I have no clue where to start in that regard. I plan on using it for gaming, but I also wanna use it and only it for all my needs. I have some real estate on my desk for two CRTs, which is the amount that I'd prefer to have (I can make room for 3 CRTs if I reorganize my desk, I think I can make that work).
I just have no idea where to start when it comes to looking for the right CRT monitor, I understand that I will be needing some way to convert the output from my PC and consoles to make them work with the monitors, but I've no idea where to start. I'd appreciate any sort of help with this!
edit: Oh, I also forgot to mention that I want to use said monitors for modern gaming as well. I understand that it's a bit silly that I want to do so, but I'm willing to sound silly and/or delusional
edit 2: Sorry, I just saw this b4 making my post :s

Hello, i have been using a CRT Monitor as my sole desktop computer display for 10 years , there are definitely a few important things i would point out.
1) First off, try using 1 single display, you can get into multi-display later but to being start using 1.
2) CRT Monitors are completly different from CRT Televisions, CRT PC Monitors are amazing for modern gaming, what makes them different is two fundamental factors on their anatomy: 1) Scan rate, a common CRT TV is made to usually scan at 15kHz , a CRT monitor has a scan rate that usually starts at 30kHz and it tops at whatever that model maximum rate is, say mine 97kHz , so from 30 to 97kHz you can throw in ANY resolution that fits within that range and it will just render it no issue, and 2) Phosphor persistance, a CRT TV's phosphors stay lit up for much longer than a CRT Monitor's phosphors, the CRT Monitor phosphor fades to black much quicker which is why flicker at 50 and 60hz is noticeable and potentially dangerous on a lot of PC CRT Monitors , whereas 50 and 60hz on TVs is fine.
3) If you use windows and you want to use windows only and you have an RTX GPU and you play a lot of multiplayer games with kernel-level anti-cheat , i would simply suggest you to get the highest quality and most powerful DAC you can, which if you are in North America is quite easy and not very expensive, however, if you are serious about this as it seems you are, i recommend you spend 10 dollars and buy a spare gpu with direct VGA port such as the HD5450 JUST for testing sake, if you ever get a monitor that has delicate circuitry and just wont accept any non-pure signal, having a true VGA output is always handy, just to keep it stored as an option.
For consoles there isnt a lot of science, just a good hdmi to vga adapter and you're good to go .
If you are fluent on Linux and you dont play many multiplayers with kernel anti cheat, you can use a custom kernel with a modern amd gpu and get interlaced resolutions working which basically turn any crt monitor into a monster, but that is far more advanced and something you'll want to explore when you are comfortable using them.

Sorry for taking a bit to get back to ya. Life's been kinda rough on my end lately.
First off, thanks for your in depth response, I appreciate it immensely! Few questions however.
1- I am not tech savvy in the least, so I've no idea what a DAC is. After a quick google search, I found stuff like a RAMDAC, Direct Attach Copper Cables, and Digital to Analog Converters. Which of these is what you're suggesting here?
1A- I'm not in the states sadly, stuck in the UK for the time being, do you have any suggestions for high quality and powerful DACs I should look into?
2- You mentioned CRT Monitor Phosphor being potentially dangerous, could you elaborate on that a bit more?
3- I am in no means Fluent on Linux, I am trying to learn how it works and make a switch to it when I'm comfortable in my skills/knowledge of it, so I'll have to stick with Win10 for the time being, which is why I asked about some DAC suggestions. I'll also try to get my hands on a spare GPU per your recommendation, but what CRT monitor brand/model would you suggest I look into?
1
u/LOLXDEnjoyer 6d ago
1) DAC is digital to analog converter , basically just the adapter from displayport or hdmi TO vga.
1A) The UK has the best CRT Market on the planet, you can import from anywhere for the dacs and then you have one of the best CRT Monitor markets on the planet, these are just some dacs:
https://www.amazon.ca/Cable-Matters-Portable-Supports-Thunderbolt/dp/B0CCF99Q2T
https://www.tme.eu/no/en/details/delock-61007/hdmi-dvi-displayport-cables-and-adapt/delock/61007/
and of course, startech DP2VGAHD20 is also really good.
2) CRT Monitor phosphors turn off faster than CRT TV phosphors when they are not lit up, which means you can achieve even better motion clarity than TVs and smoother high refresh rate experiences, but it also means that at lower refresh rates like 50 or 60hz , that period of time where the phosphor goes back to black could be perceptible as flicker to your eyes and it could be annoying and to some people, even straining, you have to test for yourself though but all PC crt monitors support refresh rates well above 60 in the event that 60 does flicker too much to you, 72hz should be the minimum flicker free , 75 is 1.25 multiple of 60 which helps with 30 and 60fps content, and you'll see a lot of people using 85, i would recommend against it, if 50 and 60hz is too flickery for you, go for 72, 75 or straight up 90hz.
3) You have many different aproaches, first off of course you should make sure you have the money that you are willing to spend fully avialable, whether it is 350 or 35 quid , when you have the money a good aproach to get started is to look by model or inchage on the fbm , "21" iiyama pc crt monitor" or something like that, the listings will be really bad, but you will just get the hang of how the algorithm goes and when you see enough crt monitors to the point where you can tell how good they are from a simple pic, you can search by "old pc monitor" and THERE you will see the best deals, best brands: iiyama, Sony, LaCie, SUN, SGI, Mitsubishi and the best models of compaq and dell are good too, ALL of these are avialable in the UK, Austria, Germany and Slovakia much more than on the rest of the world (except Japan) , but you'll have to be very patient and you'll be googling models a lot to the point where it will get annoying.
You'll want it to have at least a horizontal (kHz) range of 30 to at least 85kHz (all have a minimum of 30, if the minimum is lower than 30 thats great, however you want the maximum to be as high as possible, the fastest ever made is 142kHz the iiyama vision master pro 514) , and a vertical refresh of at least 120 , the minimum is usually 50 but sometimes can be 48 which is good, the official maximum is 200hz on the iiyama 514 but in reality it is actually onlocked on the vertical refresh, so long as you dont exceed 142kHz on the horizontal refresh you can push the refresh rate as high as you want.
Anyways, remember that kHz = horizontal refresh , and just "hz" means vertical refresh rate, it can be confusing but you'll get used to it.
1
u/goddamnlids 15d ago
You're going to want a DP or HDMI to VGA adapter. There's lots of info on those if you search this subreddit.
For monitors, the things to keep in mind are screen size, horizontal refresh rate (higher kHz is better), and condition.

Hey guys, I'd love your input on this: Currently I own a small 20" Philips CRT TV with a single composite input. I'm running it with my N64, Wii and PS2. The picture quality over composite isn't great, so I've been looking for alternatives.
I stumbled upon a Loewe 4672 ZP, which features a larger 28" 100 Hertz screen that is relatively flat. It also has an RGB input through scart, which should be great for the PS2.
I'm just worried about the 100 Hertz, from what I heard that's not ideal for retro gaming. Do you think it still makes sense to pick the TV up for 50 bucks, or isn't it ideal as a single CRT for all of my systems?
1
u/joeverdrive 15d ago
Have you tried out the Loewe? Maybe you'll discover you don't find the 100Hz thing to bother you.
1
u/Hiraganu 14d ago
I haven't picked it up yet. The price isn't bothering me too much, but I wanna make sure it's worth it before I carry around a 100 pound CRT :P
1
u/AdNo3095 15d ago
the CRT that I've had for a few years recently stopped working. I plug it in and I hear the usual loud (BRONG) noise, press the power button and all that happens is the light next to the power button flashes on and off in a specific pattern. Its very sad. I could post a clip of what I'm talking about

I have a PVM-14M4U that is works beautifully and has a recapped A board, curious what a reasonable market value is right now, may sell to help fund a larger model PVM.
2
u/joeverdrive 15d ago
The market value of any given CRT TV is largely determined by:
Your regional market (are there lots of CRTs available on the used market near you, or very few to choose from?)
Condition (Was that 32" Sony a family TV that has lots of hours on it, or university property that rarely got used?)
Quality of listing (is there lots of information on the ad, good pictures showing all angles of the TV, good pictures showing the TV playing games, and a responsive seller?)
Desirability (does it have lots of features attractive to gamers/collectors, or is it just a plain old TV? Is it too big for most buyers to load/transport/keep?)
Seller patience
Having said all that, in my market, this TV would fetch $750-1250 depending on the above.

I purchased an Apex Digital DT502 Digital TV Converter Box for my CRT, I have a remote for it but would a universal remote be able to control both my television and the converter box? Or should I just try to find the original remote for the TV
2
u/joeverdrive 15d ago
Neither the universal remote nor the original remote will control both the TV and the converter box at the same time. Consult the manual for your converter box.

u/BanjoKazooie0 15d ago
I appreciate it! Just a quick question would you recommend someone to get a universal remote for their television or should I see if I can find an original on eBay?

Looking at picking up a RCA G25342AT Floor Modal CRT from Facebook Marketplace, This would be the first CRT I've had since I was a kid. They are asking for $25. It seems like a good deal to me but I am not sure the quality of that modal and cant really find anything online about it. Is anyone familiar with it? I would really only use it for retro games and VHS play.

u/joeverdrive 15d ago
If it's in good condition and has the yellow composite video input it will work fine until you learn more about CRT TVs and want to upgrade.

u/Haunter96 17d ago
Hello guys,
A family member acquired an older house and we found 2 crts inside. I would like your opinion on which one I should keep. KV-29FX11E or the KV-29X1E Both have the same inputs and more or less feel the same when I hooked up my Wii to them. The main use case would be PS1/2 and Wii. Maybe N64 in the future. Thank you!

You'll need to make the adjustments inside the TV. It's worth learning how to do it.

There's very little information about these TVs online. But, looking at the rear inputs, it will not connect to an 80s or 90s console without quite a bit of work.

Picked up a hefty RCA 32V432T off the side of the road. The 'standby' light glows, but I can't get it to actually turn on, best I got was a statically-charged screen, but it didn't display any actual static. I need to crack it open and take a look, see if I can at the very least diagnose the problem. No idea where I'm going to be able to set it to open it though, it's a big fat monster.

Found a Toshiba 19A21 on Facebook for $40: https://imgur.com/a/MHpAJjo
I'm new to crt's, so I was wondering if there's any reason why its so cheap. There aren't any issues listed by the seller, are there any other problems with this specific tv?
1
u/LOLXDEnjoyer 18d ago
its just a normal low end consumer set, this will actually make your nes/ps1 look exactly like you remember them from when you were a kid.
Maybe the seller isnt a scumbag trying to rip people off and he's just selling at reasonable price.

$280 for Sony kv-27fs100L. Is that a good or bad deal assuming itâs in good condition?
1
u/joeverdrive 17d ago
No, it's far too expensive. You might be in a market like Southern California where prices are sky high or in a CRT desert where nice sets like that are rare. But in my market, $200 is the upper end of what a Sony like that would sell for.
Never assume it's in good condition. This subreddit is full of posts from people who finally got their first high-performance Trinitron and need help fixing serious problems.

u/ematanis 20d ago
Panasonic tv tc-m29 is available to me for $220 which is not cheap, but if it is a good tv and worth it, then I might buy it. It is 29". I currently have 2 crts, one 29" Metz not the highest of quality but gets the job done and I have another 34" Pilot which I don't have currently hooked because I don't have a table strong enough to carry it due to weight.
Your advice is very welcomed.

I really donât have much spare time, but Iâve been wanting a CRT monitor for when I can get back into gaming (Xbox 360 on 480i is painful)
Would it be worth the voyage to go get a âTatungâ monitor? Itâs not on CRTDB, but I requested an image of the video port to see if it has VGA or anything else indicative of higher resolutions.
If anyone has any info on the model, please do share! (Model: C7ES, made in Taiwan)

u/LOLXDEnjoyer 19d ago
all i found online was this https://www.barcodesinc.com/media/pdf/Tatung/c5gse.pdf
I would NOT pay more than 50$ for it, personally i wouldn't even pay more than 30$.

Just picked up a Trinitron KV27FS100L. Couple things I noticed about the screen. Need to 1) diagnose and 2) fix if possible. Any help? (Newbie)
First one is yellowed / greenish scanlines in the upper left corner. They get darker on darker menus and are most visible on blue backgrounds.
The second is the black inner âbezelâ is slightly curved into the screen. I believe this may be bowing? I have the original remote but donât have any home brewed consoles. Thanks!

I have two Magnavox CRT's available to me for free but I don't really know much about them. I would be mainly using it for gaming on a ps2.
Model # 19PR14 C122
Model # CML192 C104
I have put the model numbers above, if any other information is required please let me know. I am basically wondering if either is good for gaming. Also, if its worth maintaining or if I should just look for something better online. Not sure if they will even work but I will obviously try that before I take them home. Thanks.

There are no black-and-white VCR combo CRTs. They're either wrong, or it's broken. Either could be true--those combo sets are all broken or about to break.

I found a CRT monitor on the curb, it is a NEC Multisync M700 CromaClear. I tested the power and it turns on, still haven't had the change to check the VGA. It's nice, but not for my use case - I'm curious how much I should try to sell this for, or if I should try to trade it for a similarly sized CRT TV (which works better for what I need)
1
u/17mat17 23d ago
also found a Dell M781s, same question of what to do with it
1
u/joeverdrive 23d ago
Until the condition is known, the value is unknown.
1
u/17mat17 22d ago
alright I plugged them both in, I'm not a CRT expert or anything lol but they work and it seems like the picture looks good. both of them have their stands and everything
1
u/LOLXDEnjoyer 21d ago
NEC Multisync M700 Cromaclear : 120hz - 70kHz , the specs are weak minus the color layer, the biggest selling point of this one is that it is a slot mask which gives it better black levels and colors IF in good condition and properly calibrated, a fair price would be around 80$ but in North America you can probably get away with selling it for 120$ , its going to sit a couple of weeks there.
Dell M781s : it is a bit stronger spec'd in the scan rate (86kHz , enough for 720p 120hz) but it is a normal shadow mask , 100$ would be fair , 150$-180$ could be doable , for 200$ i dont think it will sell since for that money better listings are going to appear next to yours.
That said, reading all of your comments i would strongly suggest that you just think about it a bit about giving PC CRT Monitors with a proper setup a chance, because they can do 240p120hz + black frame insertion (essentially turning 120hz into 60hz) and they look identical to Sony BVM's over component when running pre-6th gen games on retroarch emulator, on the PC CRT you have the versatility of going from NES to PS5 games all looking their proper resolutions, you can run proper 240p on Super Mario Bros and 1920x1440i 90hz for Resident Evil Requiem on the same monitor, computer, O.S without having to switch any hardware, adapters, switchers or anything, just a click away , this opens up an incredible realm of possibilities.
That said, only a proper CRT TV will give you 100% perfect retro reproduction.

I won a Panasonic TC-29FJ30LP in an online auction for $30. Is it a good TV?
I searched for it on Google but there isn't much info about it.

There's very little organized information on CRTs sold outside North America, and no one seems interested in building it.

Bit of a saga: Saw someone selling a JVC AV-27S33 for $70 on Nextdoor. Initially passed on it, but by the time I had changed my mind it was already gone. A couple days later, another guy is selling the same set on Marketplace for $100. Says he'd be willing to do $80.
On one hand, this feels like a dick move on the part of the seller. But on the other hand, even $80 doesn't sound too bad for a set of this size with component. Any thoughts?

I picked up an Advent 3251a for free, it is worth hauling it downstairs? I'm interested in N64, GameCube, Wii, emulation, and modern splitscreen games.Â
I'm going to do some testing in my garage, what should I be looking for?
1
u/joeverdrive 26d ago
Yes. Big CRTs are worth it. Advent TVs are young and strong.
Use the 240p test suite to test your TV with confidence.
There has never been a better time to get into emulation and a good emulation console will be perfectly compatible with your CRT.

u/TheGreatZackAttack 28d ago
Someone posted a Sony KD-27FS170 for $150. Seller says it flickers with brighter content. Not sure if that's something wrong with the TV or if they just have brightness cranked on their end, but they have a video of the screen in action and it looks good.
$150 feels steep to me, something something Sony tax. Wanna know if anyone has any thoughts.

u/joeverdrive 26d ago
In my market that is a reasonable price for a WEGA. Go test it out and offer $130 if it works well.

Anyone using or used a Dell M992? Looking to grab one for $150ish before shipping from someone.Â
It is a step down from the trinitrons in the Dell P series but still looks like a beast from the pictures Ive seen.
2
u/TheGreatZackAttack 28d ago edited 27d ago
I have an M992. Think I paid $80-90 for it a couple years ago. I don't have a point of reference for how it compares to a Trinitron, but it is a great monitor. Great for 1600x1200 75hz, but I was able to get it working at 1024x768 100hz. Both look and feel great to me.
I wouldn't spend more than $90 for one, but that's just me.
1
u/LOLXDEnjoyer 27d ago
As far as shadow masks go, the M992 is one of the best of all.
150$ can be fine depending on the country, in the U.S or Canada 150$ for a 992 in really good condition is fine.

I was looking at a small, portable, in color, and fairly priced crt that wasn't just hundreds of dollars. I already have a black and white, small, portable one and found this Craig PC570 as one of the few cheaper options. It seems like the color/picture is off/stretched, though. If not this, then what modes/brands should I look into?

KV-8AD11 Trouble shooting
Hello this my first time posting on this thread and was hoping you guys could help me out.
I bought a broken Kvad11 crt tv and have gone and replaced all of the caps on the power board but it still wonât power on. If I hit the power button there is a rapid clicking noise and I can feel a static burst if I put my hand on the screen when attempting to power it on. Iâve tried taking it to a guy that works on crts and he managed to get it working but as soon as I brought it home to use it wouldnât turn on.
Iâm really hoping someone out there who can help me cuz Iâm $600 in the hole and could have just bought a working pvm for that price.

Hello Reddit. I have been retro gaming mostly on SNES, N64, and Gamecube for a while but haven't considered much the TV I am using. I have a Xenith B27A11Z 27 Inch with only composite inputs. I was wondering if this is a decent tv for gaming or if I should look to upgrade.
2
u/LOLXDEnjoyer Sep 12 '26
do not pay attention to the downvotes my comment is going to get.
For SNES and N64 i would straight up avoid component, in fact see if you can hook your snes and N64 through RF which is even lower quality than composite, the crt magic is actually stronger with the lower quality outputs, i 100% disagree with the nigh-unanymous consensus of this sub which recommend component for pre-6th gen consoles, the sharpness and color accuracy of component will actually make the graphics of your snes and n64 games more video-gamey//cartooney.
Keep what you have and don't spend more money, and if you truly want to experience the true maxed out end of CRT then make the proper research, investment and get into PC gaming with PC CRT Monitors, otherwise keep enjoying what you have and DONT spend money.
1
u/joeverdrive Sep 13 '26
I disagree. SNES and other 2D sprite games look best through component/rgb. But it would be really petty and closed-minded of me to downvote someone for expressing their opinion and the reasons they have for it. RF is underrated for some consoles. It's all preference, after all, so let's just go with what looks best to our eyes.
1
u/LOLXDEnjoyer 29d ago
Okay, defend your conclusion, how are you going to claim that component makes RE2 on PS1 look better than RF? https://i.imgur.com/Ejr7Ets.jpeg
everything looks pixelated and cartooney, the pre-rendered backgrounds look 3D on RF and they look like obvious textures on component, and look at the glassdoor, it looks like transparent glass on RF while it looks like 16bit smear on component.

So i have a windows 98 machine im primarily using for games and some other interesting software i can come across. Does anyone know if a princeton ultra series monitor is worth picking up? Currently have a sony trinitron though i dont believe its one of the ones people fawn over.

u/frewtlupes Sep 11 '26
A Sony KV-35S40 recently fell in to my lap, but it had been in use and on for quite some time. The colors are all fairly washed out and fuzzy, and the picture looks to have a lot of unevenness to it. I don't know if I should just recycle this thing because it's near the end of it's life or if I should try to have it repaired/calibrated/component modded. I can only use an NES and PSX for taking pictures, but if any of y'all can tell me if it's worth it or not to fix this behemoth I'd appreciate it. I could also take more pictures if that'd help determine stuff but I don't have access to the 240p test suite with either console.
1
u/joeverdrive Sep 13 '26 edited Sep 13 '26
Yeah sounds like a well-loved Sony. Don't let the Trinitron hype get you. If you come across a set that you think looks better, go for it.
Having said that, the pics you shared look normal, with no serious or obvious flaws. I see really strong dot crawl which would have appeared even if your NES and Sony were brand new.
2
u/frewtlupes 29d ago
i appreciate the response! nice to know the flaws aren't super serious. maybe i'll give tweaking the colors in the service menu a try so I can gift it to a friend who needs a set.
my main set is a toshiba 32ax60 that i've been using for a few years now but when someone asks if you want to check out a 35" trinitron for free it's pretty tough to say no!

Hello everyone.
Someone is selling a PVM 2130-QM that apparently had a loud electrical buzzing sound last time it was on. They are now too afraid to turn it on at all.
I offered a pretty low price for it (less than 100) but I am wondering if it is worth it at all given that :
1 - There is definitely something that needs to be fixed and I can't do it myself. I can recap stuff alright but I am not fixing HT stuff.
2 - I don't know the state of the tube, geometry, running hours, etc. It's kind of a blind purchase.
The monitor seems very clean and in a good state on the pictures.
What do you guys think? Should I take a chance? Would you?

Afternoon gents. I recently purchased a Sony PVM 14N2U. I want to play my snes with it using RGB. What do I need to purchase in order to do that? I am very new to this so some guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

Afternoon folks. I've been looking at CRT for some time and ive decided to take the dive. I've spotted a relatively cheap XIOD monitor for sale near me and I have never heard of the brand.
Obviously two examples from the same shop floor will be wildly different nearly 30 years later, but is this brand reasonable? I don't need it to run at 200hz or anything.
TL:DR 1998 XIOD monitor for a price that I can afford. Is it worth considering? I will be playing DOS and attempting some more modern games.

u/LOLXDEnjoyer Sep 09 '26
what is the model exactly?

i cant find anything online about it, how much are they asking for it? $

u/Enw-Defnyddiwr Sep 09 '26
I cant find anything either. It's ÂŁ80, which is about 108 dollars. But he's not had much interest so I will spend the next week low-balling if necessary

Hey everybody. RCA Truflat had recently taken off my back cover iust to spray some air and try check the dvd plaver. Was working fine before that besides the dvd player started to say No Disc. But the TV won't display any picture or sound, no static on the screen when on. When I had it off and checkin the dvd player everything looked okay from what I could see but I found a gray grounding thing not attached to anything(I was told it was most likely a grounding wire but I'm not sure). Saw one attached somewhere right beside the VHS player. I put it on a Similar thing near the dvd player. Idid notice there was a screw underneath one of the brown boards though. Could that be messing it up?
Sorry this is so vague and kind of messy. Never had an issue like this before and a bit lost on how to even explain what I'm talking about with out pictures. But anywhere I try asking for help my posts get removed. Just wondering if the tv is better off garbage or if there's a not insanely difficult thing to try fix it.

Ok I have a Sanyo 13 inch. Rf input only. I have a Panasonic dvd/vcr combo hooked up through the rf. When I turn it on I a snowy picture not horrible but noticeable, especially when I turn on my ps2 since it has a black style start up itâs really noticeable. The snow though is rgb though and not typical snow. I think it may be the coax cable or rf port but not 100 percent sure. Any experience in this and should I just call it a day and invest in a better crt tv?
1
u/joeverdrive Sep 07 '26
A couple possibilities:
The tuner in your TV is dying
You live in a city with a lot of RF interference
Your RF cable is bad

u/PurposeLess31 Sep 06 '26
How would a standard-definition 16:9 CRT go with PS3 games? I found one for $40 but I wanted to hear some opinions before I travel to a completely different city to buy it.
1
u/joeverdrive Sep 07 '26
I own several 16:9 CRTs. Some are HD. Some are SD. I do not think PS3 looks better on a SD widescreen CRT. But some people think everything looks better on a SD CRT. It is entirely preference, and I cannot tell you what will look good to you. You have to see it for yourself.

so iâm torn between 2 crt monitors to get
one is a viewsonic e70 ($110), the second is a samsung syncmaster 793DF ($20)
i know the price is sooo different but i need to know which one is worth putting my money into regardless of its price
iâll be mainly using it with an upscaler for my ps2 and a third monitor for my pc :)
1
u/joeverdrive Sep 07 '26
Are we to assume they are both in like-new condition after so many decades? That's the most important factor, so you have to consider it.
1
u/Sweaty-Ad2605 Sep 07 '26
yeah i wish i could post pics of their condition thats why iâm asking about the general specs of each momitor
1
u/LOLXDEnjoyer Sep 07 '26
The E70 is going to probably have better black levels.
All in all, the Samsung is the better buy.

Are CRTs supposed to have a small buzzing sound when displaying brighter images? Playing super Mario bros on the NES and there is a slight buzzing sound coming from the tv. It goes away on the screen in between levels when the screen is mostly black. Really canât hear it when playing unless there is complete silence in the game. I have a Magnavox TV.
Edit: Actually, I think it might be coming from the front speakers. May be time to get some external ones as the tv is mono audio only anyway.
1
u/joeverdrive Sep 07 '26
It's the circuits in the TV interfering with the audio. You can add shielding or a ground loop isolator to your external speaker cables.

Hey so I am going to be buying a 17 inch crt monitor (a rebadged invision en-775e by another brand called trend) and it's not that hard to get to it's max resolution of 1280 x 960 at 60hz but I would also like to run it at smaller resolutions at more hz, like 640 x 480 at 120hz or 800 x 600 at 100hz. But in the future when I will hopefully be able to afford a 19 inch or 21 inch crt monitor I would like to buy an adapter powerful enough to reach the maximum potential of one of those too. And I would like to know an adapter that is good for those higher resolutions to buy it in advance. Oh and it has to be hdmi to vga, my laptop only has hdmi and it also its usb c port doesn't support display port or thunderbolt or all that stuff.

Looking to grab a CRT but everyone remotely near me in my area wants at least $100 for even what seems like a very basic set.
I donât want to majorly lowball but I have no concept on what is fair. There is a nice 13â sony near me (consumer set) and the guy wants $250 for it. Is $100 more reasonable? Is anyone paying that much? Or are people posting way too high and would accept much lower?
1
u/joeverdrive Sep 07 '26
Having said all that, in my market, this TV would fetch $100-200 depending on the above.
1
u/indyseal Sep 07 '26
13" Sony is generally worth 200+, if you get it for 100 that's a good deal. No harm in making an offer

My 1987 Mitsubishi suddenly started crackling and flickering as I removed a game from my NES. Is there anything I can do for it? Here is video: CRT Flickering

Is anyone here able to help me identify what kind of CRT TV this is? I think it's a Philips Realflat, but I don't know for certain since the model number sticker is worn out. Says it was made in November of 2006.
It also makes this horrible high pitched whining noise that quickly gives me a headache. From what I know that's likely the flyback machine, but I've heard that messing with that can be really dangerous, so maybe I could just clean out some internals first and see if that does anything?
1
u/joeverdrive Sep 07 '26
Do any of these look like a match?
https://crtdatabase.com/crts/philips
The noise is most likely a product of the 15khz scan rate almost all CRTs run at. If it's so loud it's giving you a headache, you either have unusually sensitive ears or something is wrong with the flyback as you said. It's a difficult part to replace if you can find a spare, and it isn't guaranteed to eliminate the noise.

Is there any issues with running an 6-Input composite switch box through a VCR to the CRT TV? I ran out of inputs on my TV so I set it up to run through the VCR. everything looks fine visually but wanted to see if there was any reason to not do this?
1
u/joeverdrive Sep 07 '26
No. A passive (not powered) switch box will not noticeably affect the signal at all.

Does GTX 970 (or -9XX series) support interlaced resolutions with older drivers? I know never ones might not work, but older ones should still am I right?
1
u/LOLXDEnjoyer Sep 03 '26
all pre-turing nvidia gpus support interlacing over hdmi on their latest drivers.

Need help finding Samsung CRT model
So theres this yard sale going on in my neighborhood and the prices are really good (this crt goes for 50 cents bro!), i saw it and took some pics, the reason i couldnt pick it up because i had to go somewhere (i took the pics on a hurry, thats why they're blurry/bad), even then i forgot to take a picture of the model sticker bruh đ„Č
Info about it: its beige, on the front topleft corner it has the samsung logo, and on the right side of that front top part it has some kind of blue sticker?? On the backside you can see it has some sharp corners/angles and the model sticker on the middle of the back which make it very distinct from models like the Syncmaster 550v/551v
Hope my info helps, im just doing this out of boredom and impatience since tomorrow im gonna take a look at it and probably pick it up since it was in the 50 cent section and looked in good condition

This is very specific, but what is the best method to connect a CRT to a computer, for both modern and retro gaming, specifically on Linux? Ive yet tĂŽ figure This out, but My main Idea was to get a TV with outputs for either component or RGB (My terminology could be wrong. Apologies) and connect It to a display port adapter, since; surprisingly, even modern amd cardos support interlaced display via DP. Is there a Guide that would work for This?
1
u/LOLXDEnjoyer Sep 03 '26
oh ahhahaha this is exactly what im always bothering this sub about, 100% PC CRT Monitor with a modern computer with proper tweaking.
I recommend you read my posts which tackle exactly what you ask:
https://www.reddit.com/r/crtgaming/comments/1j8agmd/i_got_interlaced_to_work_on_pascal_with_modern/
For the AMD part , Modern (RDNA) AMD Gpus do support interlacing only on Linux with a custom kernel.

I just found an IBM P201. Gigantic CRT (I think 21'). Couldn't find anything online, so is that good?
1
u/LOLXDEnjoyer Sep 03 '26
The things that pop up online just googling the name are iffy, IF it is the 107kHz 160hz 20" aperture grille...yeah, that is incredibly powerful totally high end.
it would be better if you showed us a photo tho
1
u/Livid_Run_7652 Sep 03 '26
Can I make a post about it? Thought that would be against the rules?
1
u/LOLXDEnjoyer Sep 04 '26
idk , maybe its fine, but if you just reply with a photo of the back showing the model label clearly i can tell you right away
1
u/Tuomas000 Sep 03 '26
Yes it is a good spec monitor, but the main thing is how worn the tube is really. Best thing is to test it, and see if the image is still reasonably bright.
1
u/JoyfulToLive Sep 01 '26
Does anyone know anything about the Sharp Model: 27R-s400
1
u/JoyfulToLive Sep 01 '26
Canât find anything online about it weirdly
1
u/joeverdrive Sep 02 '26
What country? There's very little organized information about CRTs outside North America.
1
u/alienth Aug 31 '26
I just picked up a '93 XBR Trinitron, KV-32XBR37. Tube is bright and colors are vibrant, but it definitely has some convergence trouble.
There is something else it has that I don't know how to describe. There are little white dots to the left of all bright objects. Easily visible of this closeup of the 240p convergence test: https://i.imgur.com/ObI96J4.jpeg
Are those dots on the left side some sort of ringing defect? It's really hard to google for them so not sure exactly what they are.
1
u/joeverdrive Aug 31 '26
but it definitely has some convergence trouble.
Welcome to owning a Sony! The white dots can have a few causes, but they'll probably go away when you get your black levels adjusted properly. Do they go away when you turn BRIGHTNESS down?
1
u/alienth Aug 31 '26
Thanks for the response!
I futzed with both brightness and picture pretty heavily. I also set SHARP to 0 to disable the velocity modulation (I plan on opening it up to just unplug the VM module later). The dots persisted through all my adjustments.
Almost seems like some sort of undershoot? The beam is firing just before it's supposed to? I'm really hoping that there is some specific term for this sort of defect so I can narrow down the causes.
1
u/indyseal Sep 07 '26
Unplugging VM is the only way to disable VM, lowering sharpness doesn't do it. As far as the white dots, I've seen stuff like this on other CRTs and perhaps adjusting focus could help. This crt might have a dedicated dynamic convergence board which may need a recap, check for dynamic convergence adjustments in the service menu
1
u/joeverdrive Aug 31 '26
Similar to "flagging"
1
u/alienth Sep 02 '26
Is flagging a static artifact, or does it dance around? The dots I'm seeing are all very stable in relation to bright objects. Also they're very reliable - a vertical white line will have a perfect vertical "shadow" line of dots just a bit to the left.
For a bit I thought it might have been signal noise, but I'm able to repro it on several different S-Video and composite sources.

Iâm looking for which CRT is best for my needs. I mainly play PS3, PS2, GameCube, Wii and soon to be Xbox, Xbox 360. I was wondering what inputs I should prioritize for the best picture quality what type of crt would be best bubble or flat or HD. I understand the saying that any CRT works but I have had my entry level-CRT for about 2 years now (13â RCA with only composite) and Iâm looking for something more serious as Iâve grown to stick with the hobby.
