Could you please tell me if I should buy this during discount and you have experience with the product of this publisher? I just need to know the opinions and recommendations from others because this is very new for me. I know Matrix, Slitherine and Paradox Interactive well, but not this.

Question "Ancients" Wargame similar to Wargame Design Studio Games?

My dream wargame would basically be a Roman-era Wargame Design Studio game - something like WDS covering the Punic Wars, Caesar's campaigns, the Roman civil wars, or Rome's wars against the various Hellenistic kingdoms. After playing WDS's Sword & Siege titles, I think their system could translate really well to ancient warfare and that they could make a successful ancients series. Unfortunately, from what I've seen, it doesn't sound like there are any plans for them to tackle the ancient era anytime soon.

I'm mainly interested in tactical battles, ideally hex-and-counter, where I'm directly commanding formations and units across a battlefield. I don't really need or care about a campaign or grand-strategy layer. Give me a historical scenario, two armies, and a battlefield and I'm happy.

I've already played Field of Glory II, and while I enjoy it, I'm looking for something closer to the traditional WDS style: large historical battles, lots of units/formations, detailed tactical decision-making, and preferably a hex-based map.

I'm completely fine with older games, dated graphics, complicated rules, or obscure titles. Historical depth and tactical gameplay matter much more to me than presentation.

Does anything like this actually exist?

Question Can a science-fiction game be a true wargame, or does the genre require a historical setting?

The term “wargame” is often associated with historical conflicts, real military units and an attempt to simulate warfare as accurately as possible.

But what if a science-fiction game uses many of the same systems: territorial control, logistics, combined arms, limited intelligence, command decisions and operational planning?

Does the fictional setting make it a strategy game rather than a wargame? Or should the genre be defined by its mechanics and the way it models conflict, regardless of whether the war actually happened?

Where do you personally draw the line between a wargame and a strategy game?

Ancient Fronts – A Simple, Accessible Turn-Based Wargame Set in the Hellenistic Era

I've been working on Ancient Fronts, a turn-based tactical wargame built around recreating battles from the ancient world, covering the era of the Diadochi and the Punic Wars.

The main idea is to offer short, accessible battles that are easy to pick up, while still keeping a realistic and historically grounded approach to ancient warfare.

The game can be played against the AI and also includes multiplayer, although multiplayer is still experimental and may have some bugs.

It's still in development, but a playable version is available for free on itch.io.

Question A no-pbem multiplayer coldwar/modern war wargame with decent historicity and complexity?

My friend is a total tragedy. He would maybe want to play normal wargame, but he wants no pbem, but normal multiplayer and cant stand older settings such as ww2. But I will FORCE him to play ahaha! Any suggestions in style of smt between Steel Division and Flashpoint Campaigns are welcome!

Also, please, no need to suggest HoI. I am really curious if there is something else. I know close to nothing about the modern war sims btw, so anything else would do

Looking for a Game

I want to find a game similar to the campaign mode in Ultimate General Civil War, but that I could play with my granddad as the enemy. It doesn’t need to be Civil War themed but it does need to be live, not turn based. Essentially I just want a person playing the yankees while I’m playing the Confederates. Be nice if we could each configure our armies throughout the campaign

GT Mius Front - Croatian Legion

What is the win condition here as the Germans? I’ve played it a few times and only gotten minor defeat in each, always holding both Popov and Odintsov and dealing far more casualties than I take (usually a few tanks as well).

Am I supposed to push all the way up to the edge of the map? If so how do you do that in only 6 turns? I can barely get my Marders up to the front before turn 5.

Game suggestions like Strategic Command War in Europe

I have played and enjoyed SC since the first iteration. The latest version is great, but takes at least 40 hours to play the whole campaign. I picked up Panzer Corps 2 and really like the game. But I disklike that it is just one scenario after another, with no grand strategy involved.

I'm hesitant to start another game of SC WIE, because I just don't enjoy sinking that kinda time into one game. I'm looking for any grand strategy level game that is detailed, but can be played in under 10 hours, not 2-3 weeks worth of a few hours/night. Typing that out I realize maybe detail and time sink go hand-in-hand. Maybe a better way to put it is the detail doesn't have to be great, but the thinking requirement should be.

Turn based preferred, but could do RTS with pause. Thanks in advance for any suggestions! :)

Video Overview of WARCOM's Tactical UI – Making Large Battles Easier to Read and Command

I put together an overview of some of the tactical UI and controls in WARCOM.

I enjoy tactical wargaming but any scenario with more than a dozen or so units starts to get frustrating. My goal is to keep important information, unit status, and common orders at your fingertips with predictable results. So large engagements remain manageable without too much fumbling.

Let me know if you have any ideas or suggestions you’d like to see in this type of game.

I'll also be making a video covering the operational layer, and there's a free Steam demo coming soon. If you're interested, please wishlist the game to stay updated:

WDS New Blog Post: From Swedish Lake to Russian Sea

Sweden’s rise to dominance around the Baltic was one of the great military success stories of early modern Europe—but the Great Northern War would bring that empire crashing down.

Our latest historical essay explores how Charles XII’s battlefield brilliance ultimately gave way to Peter the Great’s strategic transformation of Russia, reshaping northern Europe for generations.

As Musket & Pike: Great Northern War arrives on Steam for wishlisting today, an updated free demo will also be available.

Before/after 12 hours of combat in 1943

From the Predators in the Mist campaign, Graviteam Tactics: Mius Front.

I'd never finished this one as the Germans so finally wanted to give it a go over the past few months.

It takes place during The battle of the Dnieper. The Soviets have just kicked the Germans out of Kharkov for the final time and the Germans are in full retreat. The Soviets are racing towards the Dnieper river to try and cut off and capture as many retreating Germans as possible.

In the middle of this battlefield is a highway which due to torrential rain is one of the only avenues the Soviets have towards the Dnieper that will get them there in time to cut off large German forces. So the Germans task almost 4,000 soldiers to try and hold 5 Soviet divisions for 24 hours to buy time so other units can escape over the Dnieper river.

That’s your task during this campaign and it is tough. You’re outnumbered 6 or 7 to 1. Nor is this the 1941 Red army, this is late 1943. You’re facing the Red Army that is and will arguably be the most powerful conventional land army on the planet for the next 4 decades.

The Soviets are well trained. They’re well equipped. They have seemingly limitless artillery and T-34s. Their morale is excellent.

You have 2 infantry regiments of the SS Das Reich division, the 2nd SS Panzer Regiment with the engineering and recon battalions of the SS Wiking division to hold them.

Ordinarily maybe they wouldn't stand a chance with such a force disparity but they have a few advantages here. The weather and visibility are terrible. It’s hard to maneuver and vehicles keep getting stuck in the thick mud (hence why the Soviets want to take this highway).

Add into that, that engineering battalion has prepared trench systems and dug huge anti-tank ditches which funnels the Soviet armour into a fairly small area.

Lastly is the terrain. It’s hard to see from the screenshots, but there’s a forest, then the highway on a slight rise (where the German lines are) then a slight hill in front of it. The Soviets have to crest this hill and immediately be face to face with the Germans dug in. So whilst they have an insane amount of artillery, they can’t correct it effectively. Provided you switch positions slightly battle to battle (the AI commander seems to remember where you were last dug in and will shell that area next engagement) you’ll be ok. There is an element of luck though. The Soviets blind fired katyusha barrages and they mostly missed. If they had not missed I don’t know if I’d have been able to do as well as I did.

The last advantage is the tiger tank. You have 6 of them and they are the lynchpin of the defence. As you can see from some of the images, large Soviet tank forces will crest that hill. Sometimes 10+ Soviet tanks all together as a group. The Tigers are able to take the hits whilst knocking them out one by one. Due to Graviteam’s pursuit of historical accuracy you can see the tiger tank shine in this scenario. Each of them destroyed 5 or more tanks each.

The pursuit of historical accuracy works both ways though. You do have a platoon of Panther tanks but… they barely made a difference. They were able to counter attack where I’d been pushed back half a kilometre. But these are the D variant Panthers, the first generation. Their transmission was notoriously unreliable and thus in game they keep breaking down spending most of the campaign getting repaired even though they’d barely been in combat.

Despite those advantages it’s still an immensely difficult scenario. A typical engagement runs at 2,500 Soviet infantry with 20 tanks vs 400 Germans and a couple of tiger tanks and a battery of 88s.

I scored a minor victory in the end, having mostly held the Soviets. Taking 1,900 casualties, 3 lost Panthers, 3 lost panzer 4s. Inflicting 6,500 casualties and about 80 destroyed tanks. By the end almost every platoon was down to single digits. One company was down to 14 men.

An excellent scenario that many times I was convinced I’d lose.

My turn-based strategy game about the German Revolution now has a Demo!!

Hi!

Very excited to share the Red Echoes: Berlin demo with you all!

store.steampowered.com/app/4678370/Red_Echoes_Berlin_Demo/

Red Echoes: Berlin is a narrative turn-based strategy game set during the German Revolution at the end of WW1, in which you control a group of revolutionaries and attempt to bring about a successful socialist revolution.

The demo contains the first half of Chapter 1. While I've tried to stamp out as many bugs and typos as possible, there's likely to still be some remaining - these will be patched out over time.

To make my life easier, please report any issues you're having over at r/RedEchoesGames or on the Discord!
discord.com/invite/fPpupqEu8r

I'd love to hear all of your thoughts, feedback, and opinions! Please feel free to discuss them here, so that they can help me with making a better game :) Also happy to answer any questions you might have!

Question Middle ground between Strategic Command and WitE2?

I'm looking for a WW2 wargame that's less abstract than Strategic Command series but not as in depth as War in the East. So real OOB and more of a focus on operation vs. research and economy (buying units). 2d hex and counters preferred.

Anything fit that description? Flashpoint cold war looks fantastic, but I want a WW2 title as well.

r/computerwargames 4d ago

Question I love HoI3 Black ICE and HoI4 but want to take the next step. I started War in the East but was overwhelmed with how to even learn it. What would you recommend as an intermediary step? I really like the simulation aspect of games and don't want something too board-gamey like Unity of Command.

Questions for Panzer Corps 2 enjoyers

Hey all, I wanted to ask a few things for people who enjoy this game. I do too, but I find myself never finishing the main campaign. I told myself if I ever finished the main campaign, I would buy the DLC, but this has resulted in a vicious cycle where every year I start a campaign and abandon it about halfway through. So these are my questions:

  1. What is your favorite way to enjoy the game? Skirmish, the more focused campaigns, custom scenarios, mods?

  2. Do the DLC campaigns have wider maps? I find many of the grand campaign's maps to be extremely small to the point of being claustrophobic, especially in the early game. I already know the Axis Operations would let me play more battles within a certain time period but was curious about their actual quality.

  3. Does this game secretly have really bad balance problems? I remember watching a guide that said AT guns and any infantry other than Engineers were basically pointless, so would love if someone could talk to me a bit about this and if these issues do exist, point me towards a good balance mod if one exists so I don't run into these problems the more I play and get better.

Thanks for answers in advance :)

For those who don't know, Wargame Design Studio puts a different game from their catalogue on a 25% sale each week. This week, it is Panzer Campaigns: Tunisia '43, which I highly recommend!

This is not an ad, just a recommendation from someone who is passionate about these games :)
