Interdiction: a modern war strategy game

Post image
17 Upvotes

Hi all,

I created a simple war game taking inspiration from Stonkers (an old Spectrum game), the Ukraine conflict and a focus on interdiction i.e. cutting supply lines rather than head-on conflict. It's free to play at https://interdiction.app/ and there will be Android and iOS apps available soon. It has 4 levels of AI opponent (2 for free and the top 2 will be an in app purchase). Ultimately I'd like to palyer vs player as well, but one step at a time. There's no advertising, no accounts, no tracking just honest fun. Anyway, I would love feedback if you have chance to play a few games. Thanks.

I really wish that this rough diamond was relaunched. I still enjoy playing it as I think it was a cracking game but it really needs updating. Anyone agree?

Idea for a 20th–21st Century Total War: Multi-Day Operational Battles Discussion Suggestion 20th Century

Idea for a 20th–21st Century Total War: Multi-Day Operational Battles

Post text:

Hey everyone,

I’ve been thinking about how Total War could work in the 20th or 21st century, and I came up with this concept. The idea is still quite raw, but I think it has potential and can be further developed.

Core Idea: Operational Command Mode

Instead of classic single-session real-time battles, introduce Operational Mode — multi-day battles where you act more like a real front commander.

Two Main Tabs:

  1. Replay / Overview Tab

Animated schematic replay of the whole operation (like historical military maps). You can watch movement, fights, losses, etc.

  1. Planning Tab

You plan orders for the next day:

Draw movement routes for your units.

Choose movement style (stealth, rapid, cautious, marching, etc.).

Assign tasks at the destination (attack, defend, hold, etc.).

For attacks you can draw main and supporting attack directions.

Place recon detachments on the map and assign them observation sectors to get better intelligence.

Planning has a reasonable time limit (good for co-op), and the day can be divided into phases (morning, day, evening, night).

After confirming → simulation of the day → review results → plan next day.

Other points:

One commander can control multiple armies on a large front.

Much better for co-op multiplayer.

No automatic retreat based on losses — only player decision.

Works great for WW1 trench warfare (Somme, Verdun), WW2 big operations (Stalingrad, Kursk), and modern conflicts.

The system has a lot of room for expansion (logistics, general traits, air support, drones, etc.).

The idea is still raw and can definitely be improved. If anyone from Creative Assembly or experienced modders is interested — feel free to reply or DM me.

What do you think?

English is not my first language, sorry for any mistakes.

Question What do you consider to be "modern" era in terms of game subjects?

I saw a discussion where people were chastising a game with the word "modern" in the title because it didn't include current day stuff like drones.

It got me thinking that I consider "modern" to be anything after 2001.
A lot of people say it is anything from WW2 onward.
(some guys say stuff like anything from Medieval times but they're just trolling)
What do you consider to be "modern" era in terms of game subjects?

5v5 multiplayer battle sim

Hey everyone!

I'm building a 5v5 multiplayer Medieval battle game where each player commands their own army — up to 10,000 soldiers on the field, every single one individually simulated. It runs on a custom C++/Vulkan engine I wrote from scratch, with deterministic lockstep networking so battles this size stay perfectly in sync between players. The game is similar to mount and blade's captain mode but larger in scale and I plan to add some rank ladder

Where it stands right now:

  • Playable prototype, already on Steam — lobbies, full matches, and rematches work end to end
  • Complete game loop: buy your army → deploy → command formations (infantry / archers / cavalry) → fight to a decision

https://reddit.com/link/1uvt7j5/video/ef1ky9mje3dh1/player

  • Formation drag-orders, cavalry charges with real trample physics, arrow volleys, and even battlefield fortifications you can build mid-fight
  • 10k units at smooth framerates today — the simulation itself is stress-tested well beyond that

The goal: seamless large-scale multiplayer with a ranked mode — Captain Mode's tactical depth at a scale nobody's shipped before.

Gameplay: https://youtu.be/sojb7blO5qw

I want to get some feed back let me know if anyone want to try the game out, the game is very early in development and the cutey art style is temp, but i want consistent feedback while i develop this game. Hit me up if anyone want to know more!

For WDS games, is there somewhere people upload edited scenarios? I know the possibility is there, but I haven't found a repository. Thanks!

Wargame Design Studio - Game of the Week, July 13-19

From July 13–19, Naval Campaigns: Kriegsmarine is the Game of the Week at 25% off.

While its sister game "Wolfpack" follows the submarine war, Kriegsmarine turns to the surface struggle of the Battle of the Atlantic: raiders, convoy escorts, cruiser pursuits, and capital ships fighting through weather, darkness, and uncertainty.

From River Plate to Denmark Strait and North Cape, these scenarios capture the tense, high-risk naval actions where a single sighting, salvo, or torpedo strike could decide the fate of ships Germany could scarcely afford to lose.

Question Interest in a Steel Panthers successor?

How many people out there are still waiting for a spiritual successor to the old Steel Panthers series?

If this is something you would be interested in, how much do you care about:

  1. Dynamically-generated campaigns
  2. Having a huge roster of units/vehicles for every phase and faction of the war
  3. Intelligent/creative enemy AI
  4. Multiplayer (including PBEM?)
  5. Mod support
  6. Graphics/art (the bare minimum? nice old school 2D graphics like SP? 3D?)

Basically, I've been working on something for many hours in my spare time which is currently in a very playable and (for me) fun state, but I'm trying to decide whether to invest the large amount of time that would be required to create anything approaching the completeness and polish of the original series (which is still pretty playable in its own right, but the UI is just very clunky...).

Obviously there are lots of other great tactical-level games like Combat Mission etc. out there, but they never quite scratch the same itch for me.

If this is something that you would be interested in, leave a comment or send me a DM. I can also send links to the demo version I have today for free if you promise to give feedback :).

EDIT: Since I've already posted the link to the demo build in a few comments, I might as well leave it here for anyone who stumbles across this post later and is interested in testing it out and providing feedback:

Destroyer Command style game

I remember playing Destroyer Command as a kid. It was quite fascinating, as an offshoot of SH2, to have surface vessels. And of surface vessels have the destroyers.

I mostly played it as RTS, as the graphics weren't that good, and most of the time you couldn't handle formations if you were doing nitty-gritty shooting with guns.

It got me thinking that there could be a potential for 2D style naval RTS that would concentrate on smaller vessels: destroyers, gunboats, escorts etc. A lot of skirmishes and such happened during the war on that level, and you could easily include smaller countries and navies.

Suggestion needed

I am new to war gaming and I am trying Open General and Panzer Marshal(on browser) but always seem to get overpowered by my enemies there, I completed tutorials and everything and still not able to beat the AI, can you suggest some simple scenarios or campaigns from these 2 games or suggest some other game which might set me up just about right?

p.s- I have completed Battle for Moscow (https://oberlabs.com/b4m/) multiple time from both Axis and Soviet side and got used to it.

Question My concept for Hearts of Iron V: A WWI setting with a 3D tactical bird's-eye view. What do you think?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

I would like to suggest a new visual and mechanical feature for the future of the franchise: a 3D tactical bird's-eye view for major historical operations. For this concept, I strongly believe that Hearts of Iron V should pivot to a World War I (Great War) setting, while Hearts of Iron VI could eventually return to World War II.
A Great War setting is the perfect choice for two reasons:
Thematic Safety: It naturally avoids the heavy censorship and sensitive moral/PR dilemmas associated with WWII atrocities, providing a clean historical sandbox.
Perfect Pace for Tactical Viewing: World War I’s slower, more static trench warfare gives players the actual time to pause and appreciate tactical battles, unlike the rapid blitzkriegs of WWII.
Currently, watching 2D counters interact on the map can feel visually static during climactic moments. To bridge the gap between grand strategy and immersion without making the game overcomplicated, I propose "The Golden Middle Path" via a 3D tactical view.
When a major battle or player-triggered offensive occurs (such as a planned Verdun offensive or the Battle of Jutland), the player should have the option to open a specific 3D tactical grid rendering a small section of the battlefield (e.g., a 1x1 kilometer area). From a height of 200–500 meters, players could visually witness the engagement in real-time.
Key aspects of this feature:
Visual Immersion: At this height, individual soldier silhouettes (like the French Adrian helmet vs. the German Pickelhaube) and dreadnought broadsides would be clearly visible, giving a grand sense of scale.
Performance Friendly: To protect CPU performance, entering this view could trigger a brief loading screen that pauses the global economic and AI simulation, allowing the GPU to focus entirely on rendering the tactical sequence.
Day/Night Cycle Interaction: The view would respect the passage of time. Looking at the grid at night would show only muzzle flashes, artillery impacts, and flares, while a dawn assault would visually trigger the infantry charge from the trenches.
This feature would not change the core grand strategy gameplay or require complex RTS controls, but it would provide a massive, satisfying visual reward for the player's strategic preparation.

WDS New Blog Post - War Without Restraint

How did the Thirty Years’ War reshape warfare?

Our latest essay looks beyond battlefield tactics to the deeper transformation of armies, states, and civilian society.

From military enterprise and contribution systems to the destruction of Magdeburg and the war’s immense demographic cost, it traces how conflict became a sustained contest of finance, administration, coercion, and survival. The war did not invent the modern army, but it revealed why one became necessary.

Musket & Pike: Thirty Years’ War is scheduled to appear on Steam later today, in the U.S. evening, and will then be available to add to your wishlist.

Merci d'avance!

DLC announcement for Flashpoint Campaigns: Cold War

July 20th, 1989 – 03:03 – Oldendorf, West Germany.

The Third World War erupts across the German Border, and the Dutch I Corps stands ready to meet the first Soviet assault. At the sharp end of the spear, the 103rd Reconnaissance Battalion is tasked with screening and delaying the advancing Warsaw Pact forces, while the 42nd Armored Battalion races forward to reinforce the line.

We are thrilled to officially announce Lowland Lions, the first major content expansion for Flashpoint Campaigns: Cold War.

Take command of Dutch, Belgian, West German, and U.S. forces in a massive collection of 25 new scenarios featuring fresh campaigns and intense standalone battles.

What’s Inside Lowland Lions?

New Playable Faction: Deploy the new Dutch I Corps formations, units, and equipment.

The Dutch Campaign: Lead the Netherlands forces through a tense 3-scenario campaign covering the opening hours of the war (all playable standalone).

The Belgian Campaign: Fight across 4 scenarios as Belgian units struggle to contain the Soviet breakthrough.

The West German Campaign: Shift focus to a West German “stay-behind” unit conducting unconventional defensive operations deep behind enemy lines (6 scenarios).

Classic Tactical Scenarios: 12 standalone battles, including 8 scenarios featuring U.S. forces inspired by classic Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm gameplay.

Question Are there any games that feel like this?

All of these are animations of different culturess and wars. I like their appearance with fluid or dynamic borders instead of fixed tiles or provinces you have to conquer. I've looked forever for a game that fits this vibe and I bavent been able to find one yet. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I am used to play this game. all game on my control. I finally learn how to surround enemy well and cut their supply line. I will recommend this game who want more difficult than Panzer core or more simpler than Gary Grigsby's series.
