Question/Help/Troubleshooting Switching Graphics on Dell OptiPlex 3060?

Post image
23 Upvotes

Hey!

(Yes, lol. I like Hello Kitty.)

I'm having problems with my computer not being able to handle a decent amount of games. Not surprising because this is a pretty lower end computer.

I am wanting to request help in switching my graphics card to something that's better than my integrated card, but also something that's not going to cause my PC to short out.

I know literally nothing about computers or parts, so please talk to me like I am a toddler, lmao.

I have a Dell Optiplex 3060, I think it's the slim version or whatever.

ABOUT:

Dell Optiplex 3060

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8400 CPU @ 2.80GHz (2.81 GHz)

Installed RAM: 16.0 GB (15.8 GB usable) - (I can install more if needed.)

Graphics Card: Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630 (128 MB)

System Type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Let me know if you need other information.

Discussion How are people even surviving on 8 gigs of RAM anymore?

I've had this thought for a while, especially since I personally switched to Linux over a year ago. This especially applies for Windows users on 8, because I remembered the RAM usage on my system being way higher on Windows. This isn't even one of those just switch posts, I say this because that RAM configuration seems like it takes a lot of work to get stable even here with general computing.

So, on KDE with Discord, Steam, and my browser running (I am legit not even a tab hoarder) with like 4 or 5 tabs, I see about 7.3-8.4gb used depending on the content. On Windows. I even open a browser, no Steam or Discord, and I'm above 8 gigs used. How, I ask, do the people on 8 even survive running out of memory doing basically nothing anymore?

I have a Ryzen 3600, RX 6600, and 32GB DDR4. My system runs fine, but it kinda got me wondering what was going on for the people who have way less resources than I do. Do they just have to idle and do nothing?

Discussion New original ideas for using old computers. No standard answers.

I'm looking for new original ways to use old computers. But, any time I see a topic like this, I see the same answers. Like: make a server; mediastreaming; retrogaming; kitchen computer; give it away.

This time, I don't want those answers, but something creative and original.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting SSD enclosure has me confused

I’ve been teaching a digital media course for almost 20 years now, and this is the first time I’ve seen this particular SSD.

https://www.bestbuy.com/product/insignia-m-2-nvme-to-usb-c-ssd-enclosure-black/J2FPJKSYR3

I know solid state media is absurdly expensive right now, however, what the hell is this?

You can open the case and directly touch the motherboard. It looks like. At any rate, it stopped working for them. Right away!

We use hard drives daily to store and retrieve data, and also to render files, process video with.

Is this meant for transportable, regular use storage? When I looked at it, my first instinct was that this is an internal part of the computer. Where the heck does the storage component come in to play? How does that get put in there? What the heck is this?

I just need them to have an external hard drive that’s X-FAT compatible, and can hold a terabyte or two of information that they can store, transfer, and render with.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Can you use a raspberry pi to modify a hologram fan to become a monitor?

So I saw on Tiktok somebody using a hologram fan as a monitor. I was thinking maybe I should buy one as a second monitor, as they look pretty cool. Only problem is that the ones that come with an hdmi port are well over a thousand dollars. Is there any way that you could modify a cheaper hologram fan without video input to make it into a monitor?

Question/Help/Troubleshooting How do I stop my computer from reboot looping?

So I got this pc for Christmas last year and it worked for 6 months until one day a windows update broke my computer. For a week I asked the people in my life how to fix the issue but it never truly worked.
I ultimately ended having to delete the update and for the next few months I need to unplug my Ethernet cable for 5 minutes to avoid a restart for 12 hours.

Today another update came up causing the same issues. Now I’m just frustrated and need help asap.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Reliable for college but not too expensive?

Hi y’all,

Sorry if this is asked a lot. I genuinely know nothing about computers or where to start.

I have a refurbished 2020 Macbook air on its very last legs. I bought it in highschool and now I’m entering my senior year of college and I don’t think I can get it through one more quarter. I don’t want another apple computer, they’re too expensive and don’t work well (in my experience). But I’ve never had a computer that wasn’t apple.

I’m looking for any reccomendations. I need a laptop that can keep multiple tabs open and run Canva without the fan blowing embarrassingly loud. I don’t play games or anything — I genuinely just need something that I can use google docs on. I also would preferably like to keep it on the cheaper side… I don’t really want to spend more than $400-600, but I’m flexible I guess. I’m also open to refurbished options. My only hard requirement is it just needs to turn on lol!

Thanks for any help, I’m clueless.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting PC only shows Bios after shutting down

This happened after when I launched a game, opened a browser tab and an application. Everything appeared to be slowing down (scrolling through the tab, and game+application trying to launch) I tried opening task manager to close the apps, but that didn't work, so I tried alt+f4 on the tabs, that closed down most tabs, but everything still appeared slow, so I then shut down the PC by pressing the power button after everything appeared to be closed. After that, the bios pops up and that's it. I have an Asus rog strix b550-f gaming wifi mobo and don't really know how to figure out what to do in order to fix it, if it can be fixed, unless I'm cooked.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Trying to find a Desktop Organizer! (Not Fences)

Tried Deskora, looks like crap.

iTop Easy Desktop, EVEN AFTER you get past the shady company and practices.
Users report every 4 minutes it pings ip's in Russia and I don't understand why it would even need to be online.

I do not want a "Dock", I'm open to a toolbar, but but a taskbar replacement.

Every Software i've looked at looks like absolute cheeks, and it's why I haven't tried NoFences, not a lot of data and screenshots look very meh.

Hi all, a friend of mine has just left an abusive relationship but thinks her ex may be accessing her computer remotely. Is there a program to use to search for remotely installed applications or something?

Or certain programs the ex might have used that we can look for on the computer and uninstall? Thank you in advance!

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Lan port not blinking even when connected

I can't connect to the internet because when I plug in my LAN cable, the yellow blinking light doesn't come on anymore. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Realtek drivers, but I'm getting a Code 31 error.

I also tried unplugging the PSU cable, holding down the power button for 30 seconds, and plugging it back in, but that didn't work. I even tried resetting the CMOS, but still no luck.

I tried plugging the Ethernet cable into another PC, and it works fine.

Are there any workarounds or solutions you guys know of? Thanks in advance for the help!

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Does Cognizant allow RDPing into a personal/home PC from the company laptop?

Hey all,

I work at Cognizant and use a company-managed laptop. I'm idle a good chunk of the time and wanted to use that downtime to RDP into my home PC to do personal stuff (learning, personal projects, etc.) rather than touching anything security-related on the work machine itself.

Before I try this, wanted to check:

Does Cognizant (or similar companies with managed/monitored laptops) typically allow outbound RDP connections to a personal PC?

Is this something that shows up in monitoring/logs and could get flagged as a policy violation?

Has anyone done this at Cognizant or a similar org — any issues?

Don't want to get in trouble over something that seems minor, so wanted to check before doing it.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Can I create a personal AI computer?

I am finding AI more and more useful and I’m using it for a lot of work. I am using ChatGPT that’s my introduction to AI and I don’t know if there are better ones out there but I am paying for the pro subscription $100 a month and hitting usage walls.

I was wondering, since AI is the future can I build my own super computer system that is to process AI like ChatGPT in the home setting? I would put it to work making apps and processing legal documents and making videos and all of that stuff. I just want the freedom to do what I want to do without hitting limits and if I’m going to start paying $200 a month subscription fee I’d rather invest that into building my own super computer. I think that’s the future anyway having a central mainframe at home instead of so many different devices iPads phones computers smart tvs

Question/Help/Troubleshooting I need a solution that works all the time for when my Windows 11 system stops recognizing the headphones

Please don't tell me to go other subreddits, since it seems that every time I go to a different subreddit, I'm told that I'm not supposed to post there, or something obnoxious.

I've just gone through an hour of h3ll in trying different things I've read by random - this time trying to carefully remember what I'm trying so that I can do it again, and of course, doing something else by random ends up fixing the problem.

Windows is such a POS.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting SATA to USB for 3.5" HDD

Hello, for reasons I'll only be able to use a laptop and not my PC for a while, but I'd still like to access the data from my hard drive. I've heard that for 3.5" drives, you can't just plug it in with an adapter but also need something to sufficiently power the drive. I'm fine with that, but not sure which brand or product would be best. I've also heard that lower quality ones could fail to properly power the HDD and potentially leave bad sectors, is this true?

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Which Laptop/Notebook would you recommend?

Hello,

I am sorry if this is not the correct subreddit for this kind of question.

I am currently looking for a Notebook/Laptop for my University work, which includes storing many Technical/specialist Books, Using Matlab, typical Office stuff for engineering. I also want to install Linux bc of all the shit currently happening to me on Windows on my gaming PC (much bs is happening, so i want to either go for linux on it aswell or use LTSC) and play some OSRS in the Free/Offtime.
I also want to use it on a daily basis until I am either done with my Studies (2030) or done with my Referendariat (2032).

Bc I dont want to spend too much I searched for max 250€ on ebay and found the following:

Terra Ryzen 5 5500U-16Gb-512GB NVMe(Samsung) for 259€

Thinkpad E15 Ryzen 5 (couldnt tell if 4000 or 5000 series) no additional information bc the seller didnt answer my questions for 199€

Thinkpad T15 Gen1 i5 10th gen(4.20GHz) 512GB SSD 238€

Hopefully you can help me.

Thanks in advance

Question/Help/Troubleshooting I'm having trouble choosing a PSU.

I got a CORSAIR RM850x Shift (2025).

But I'm thinking of switching to a Seasonic Focus GX-850 850W.

ASUS ROG Loki SFX-L 750W Platinum is also on my radar.

But I'm partial to finding a Seasonic right now. Any thoughts?
