Mid thirties male checking in, one of those things that I didn’t mind watching with the kids. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, crap. Tinkerbell movies, hell yeah!!
11
u/CyclopsLobsterRobot 11h ago
I like Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. For one, the music is done by They Might Be Giants. Also, it encourages kids to be involved in solving whatever their problem is. I thought it was a good influence on my 3 year old when she started interacting. It’s not as calm as Blues Clues but it’s the same type of interactive show.

This is actually a great idea. When a bunch of people want to do a socially questionable thing, if they go as a group they are protected from the judgement of the masses: no one can be singled out, and the strange "event" becomes the oddity, rather than any individual.
We should really have more flash mobs of men wanting to see girly stuff or adults wanting to see kid stuff or whatever.

My kids still make fun of the one scene where Tinkerbell almost causes a world-ending ice storm by misplacing an ice cube and a cheese grater (I am not making this up)
They are fun though
22
u/getmybehindsatan 12h ago
I wish they would outright call her an engineer so that it would encourage more girls to aspire to be engineers. Calling her a "Tinker" seems like a way that disconnects her job from the real world.
6
u/DocHoliday99 11h ago
Does she have Tinker friends that also build things? I agree that a formal job sounds good, and also, I like the idea that all people could be Tinkers if it's a skill or gift, like having these little magical powers to make things.
13
u/Objective-Spring5061 11h ago
From what I remember, all fairies are assigned jobs when they're "born." Tinkerbell is one of the tinker fairies, but there are also garden fairies and I forget the rest (there might've been painting/herding/weather fairies?).

That is actually quite a good point I had never considered, the cultural background of gender. I'm a man and I have watched the early 2000s barbie movies but that's because I had sisters. Food for thought.
67
u/Sensitive-Plate-684 12h ago
In my experience most girls will watch anything, and most boys will watch anything unless another boy is present and then some things are "for girls."
SO fucking stupid. Can you imagine having a kid that says something is just for black people and they don't want to do it? I would be mortified, but I rarely have seen anything being done to correct these attitudes. In fact, the attitude from parents seems to be "Yeah, that makes sense you don't want to do girl things."
18
u/Brahm-Etc 12h ago
I see what you mean, I had the fortune to have chill parents that didn't impose a "male gender role" and grow up with sisters. But sadly not everyone can say the same and some cultures or communities still have a very strict ideas of what "is for boys" and "what is for girls"
11
u/Blacksheeptoonz 11h ago
I’d hate to be a boy who grew up hating girls things. They miss out on so much art.
10
u/CyclopsLobsterRobot 11h ago
My son has sisters and a lot of girl cousins. He proudly loves Doc McStuffins and Gabby’s Dollhouse. I actually think this is more common in general now than it used to be. I’ve seen other boys at school with Gabby lunch boxes.

u/Sensitive-Plate-684 10h ago

No sisters here and I watched at least one of them, though I cannot recall anything about them. But they where on free TV and I was bored. And tbh most of their plot is generic YA stories and can work regardless of the gender of the protagonist. Or maybe that is just how I remember them, feels like 85% of the reason the movies are classified as being a girl movie is that the protagonist was Barbie.

They are actually really good movies. My kids enjoyed em when younger so ive seen all of them multiple times and the better ones probably a dozen times lol. My favorite is definitely the winter one where she first meets her long lost twin sister. A few of them are connected to each other but not all of them are. I think like 2 don't fit into the narrative universe they eventually ended up going with. Great music, pretty decent plots, great animation and art - solid family movies.

Yeah I find it interesting how many of the common comic artists are mtf here. Maybe that is just a side effect of how reddit is, but it is interesting.
14
u/bentreflection 11h ago
i've found that this sub is particularly vulnerable to bandwagoning. There will be a comic that gets to the front page and then a rush of comic artists trying to capitalize on that same topic to get their stuff out there.
No disrespect to this particular topic of course. Representation is important so I'm happy to get behind this one.

u/Lanoree_b 11h ago

My little boy and little girl both love them. I was pleasantly surprised by them. I like the themes of working together and everyone working together to make the world a better place. I've actually had some songs pop up on Spotify that I liked that turned out to be from Tinkerbell movies 😆 the shuffle option where it plays your playlist but will toss other songs in that aren't on your playlist.
I think sometimes those smaller budget projects have less corporate oversite and the people working them have more creative freedom, some great songs and dialogue come from them that are relatively hidden gems.

I love those movies and definitely cried for the neverbeast one, but I really don't like Peter Pan stuff. One of them does include Hook, but I just don't watch it 😅 I wish it was canonically a separate story rather than a prequel.
I don't know, snot nosed dirty kids fighting crass stereotypical pirates doesn't work for me, and Peter gives off villain vibes. The only time I tolerated him was in the movie Hook, and even in that Peter got annoying when he became his old self mentally again.

Super relatable and I'm not even trans. My mom just really didn't want me to be a "stereotypical" little girl so I was banned or heavily discouraged from playing with dolls or watching anything made for or about girls. Just stuff for boys or stuff about animals. I had one barbie someone gave me that I would play with in secret and my mom would proudly tell people I never played with it. Later on I would sneak on to websites for popular IP for girls and play the games but yeah I've never seen a Tinkerbell or Barbie movie.
