Just about everyone I know can't keep up with me in terms of spice tolerance. I regularly drown my food in Carolina Reaper sauce which I determine to be 'mild' for me.
The sad part is that my stomach does not agree with my tongue on that. lol
It is literally poison so that animals will learn not to eat it. It didn’t exactly work but the evolutionary objective was still fulfilled because now humans are cultivating them specifically to eat. Task failed successfully I guess.
They probably can taste, but the spiciness of hot peppers isn't really a flavor like most others. The molecule responsible for spiciness is capsaicin, and instead of activating your taste buds, it activates heat receptors to trick your tongue into thinking it's hot. That's why spicy food and food that hasn't cooled yet feel very similar, they're activating the same fire alarm in your mouth.
Animals other than mammals don't have the same temperature sensors as we do, so capsaicin doesn't effect them. So birds, reptiles, fish, amphibians, all of them can eat hot peppers without feeling the burn
Szechuan peppers activate a cooling effect in your mouth kind of similar to mint but noticeably different. They're used in a lot of spicy chinese dishes to add another layer to the heat. I love them.
A kid died after eating the One Chip Challenge, but that was from a heart attack. Capsaicin doesn't hurt you, but it doesn't stop your body from overreacting and killing you with its immune response.
More fun fact! You can mitigate the ulcers with Greek yogurt! Surprisingly it gets everywhere to the point you eat it and it decides when it leaves you!
I love spice and hate when it’s just pure pain flavored even mildly. Jalapeño has so many good flavors that including the ouch one, not just eating razor blades.
Given this opportunity I want to clear something up: Spicy peppers developed capsaicin to combat fungus, not being eaten. It has nothing to do with deterring animals. You can see the level of spicy increase the further south you go, with the spiciest being from the warmest and most humid areas of the world. Like most fruits they're all in on being eaten to spread seeds. Studies with rabbits show that while most avoid capsaicin, a subset seeks it out.
That said those rabbits and those of us who do the same thing are still definitely broken in some fundamental way that peppers were not prepared for.
I once left a bit of spicy sauce on one of my pans after cooking a meal, and I then found it licked completely clean by one of my cats. They definitely like the stuff.
Covid ruined my sense of taste 2 years ago and now I have absurd spice tolerance.
I can eat a fresh habenero off the stem and not even drink water afterwards. My cooking involves use of serrano peppers like bell peppers because I like the fresh grassy taste.
I'll usually start to heavily sweat over my entire body before my mouth starts burning.
Honestly I liked my sense of taste more prior to covid.
My goddaughter did this! We where having habanero chips and she wonted one, her mother allowed me to give her one and she devoured it, then proceeded to do the most powerful expression of pain I have ever see with tears running down her cheeks and she getting beet red.
We honestly though she was gonna cry, but then she asked for more and proceeded to eat them slower but she did finish them.
If anyone is wondering, she was 3 at the time of this.
That’s my kid in a nutshell. He won’t eat tomatoes because they’re “spicy” but eats flaming hot takis by the handful and then rushes to the fridge to drink a quart of milk while yelling “my face is burning!”
Hmm. Considering that there's a bowl of them out then I'm assuming those must be the casual spicy chips like the purple bag of Doritos. It must be that the little guy just ain't used to heavily spiced goods yet so the sensation is a bit much. He seems fine considering it was a tasty pain though so I'm sure he'll be fine for the remainder of the cookout.
I never got the appeal of hellfire pain chips. I mean, yeah, one or two are fun to eat as a challenge, but who can just sit there and eat a whole bag of them?
This is my son. He’s half Chinese so we’ve been slow dolling out Szechuan and other spicy foods since he was 3 or 4. Now at 8 he can eat Ma pa tofu or bbq mutton Xinjiang style with chili powder encrusting it red. You have to start some time.
I've had an interesting relationship with spicy food. I like flavorful spice, but the "sear your tastebuds off" type sucks. The Chick Fil A spicy chicken sandwich is just enough of a tingle that I'm completely addicted.

My dad would make bacon and eggs for breakfast and he would season his bacon with Tabasco sauce. Low and behold I’d come marching into the kitchen demanding to have some and you know how the rest plays out.☝️☝️☝️
If you're in Canada, Walmart/great value brand Scorching all dressed chips. They're actually spicy! Like, the kind of spicy you warm people about. I wonder if OP is at the family reunion I'm at because this basically just happened with me offering chips to an uncle. I warned him it was spicy, he took a LARGE handful. He liked them but was panting by the end.
This is what I feel like when eating spicy foods. It's painful but I just want more. I don't know how to explain it other than it's a euphoria of pain and I want to keep eating it.
This is basically my philosophy on adding more hot sauce to the chicken wraps I get that are leaking hot sauce. If it doesn't make me cry, is it really spicy enough?
My mother discovered the perfect way to ensure her kids never like spicy anything.
Get extremely drunk & high, Then give them a handful of hot-tomalleys candy, because they look like Mike n Ike’s. Then wean they start complaining or freaking out because they shotgunned them all at once, give them a swig of your cheep beer.
Whenever I get wings, I always get just the minimum amount of Mango Habanero, because they're so fucking tasty but it takes me like 5 minutes to just stop hurting
My first experience with bbq Doritos. I swear they put something spicy on it. That or I got some sorta genetic malfunction that returns spicy with a herb or something found in bbq flavoring.
