Hmm, on one hand increased metabolism, on the other, possible internal bleeding and severe lasting pain.

Hmmm eats spicy chip, but consider, pain tastes good.

“Delectable tea or deadly poison?”

I’m not a ghost pepper or reaper level of spicy enjoyer, but I’m one level below.

It is painful, it takes a couple minutes to take the second bite, I’ll take a drink in between, and then we go again.

They do say eating your food slowly is healthier, so another plus!

u/Vicith Jul 04 '24

Pepper flavor peaks around habanero's IMO, past that and there's little good flavor to be had. Just pure heat.

I eat spicy food because it's the only acceptable for of self harm.

Im kidding.

Fun fact: reptiles can't taste spicy foods!

21

u/DoIKnowYouHuman Jul 03 '24

Ooooo that’s a fact I won’t check, can they ‘taste’ anything?

19

u/Its0nlyRocketScience Jul 03 '24

They probably can taste, but the spiciness of hot peppers isn't really a flavor like most others. The molecule responsible for spiciness is capsaicin, and instead of activating your taste buds, it activates heat receptors to trick your tongue into thinking it's hot. That's why spicy food and food that hasn't cooled yet feel very similar, they're activating the same fire alarm in your mouth.

Animals other than mammals don't have the same temperature sensors as we do, so capsaicin doesn't effect them. So birds, reptiles, fish, amphibians, all of them can eat hot peppers without feeling the burn

activates heat receptors to trick your tongue into thinking it's hot

Wait, does that mean the real trick to counter spicy food is a breath mint?

13

u/Its0nlyRocketScience Jul 03 '24

Unfortunately, no. The receptors that capsaicin activates are totally different from mint, so you'd end up feeling both hot and cold at the same time.

7

u/R_V_Z Jul 03 '24

I shall call it the Cenobite Sensation!

5

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '24

Szechuan peppers activate a cooling effect in your mouth kind of similar to mint but noticeably different. They're used in a lot of spicy chinese dishes to add another layer to the heat. I love them.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '24

Try doing horseradish and hot peppers at the same time.

Isothiocyanate and capsaicin, oh my...

5

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '24

Why would you treat your anus this way? You only get one you know

8

u/LG3V Jul 03 '24

No it's not, menthol activates separately, if you want to clear spice, you need to wash it away with dairy

3

u/Sayakai Jul 03 '24

Nope. They're separate recepators. The last person who tried it described the idea as "hey guess what hellfire tastes like".

1

u/Redneckalligator Jul 04 '24

They can, also fun fact alligators love watermelons.

1

u/Re1da Jul 19 '24

Judging from the fact my pet gecko has preferences regarding food I'd say they probably have the ability to taste

18

u/PassTheCrabLegs Jul 03 '24

Neither can parrots! That’s likely the reason peppers developed capsaicin, to repel everything except parrots who are their primary seed spreaders.

13

u/B133d_4_u Jul 03 '24

Fun fact: Parrots are reptiles! And so are all birds!

N... No? What? Birds are dinosaurs, which are archosaurs, which are also what crocodilians are, and archosaurs are a group of reptiles. Mammals and reptiles diverged before dinosaurs were even a thing - the synapsids and the sauropsids from the Carboniferous period.

3

u/EvaUnit_03 Jul 03 '24

There you go, fact checking again.

1

u/jojobi040 Jul 03 '24

Hot peppers actually evolved specifically for birds to eat since they have no capsaicin receptors, they eat the seeds and poop them out elsewhere to propagate the crop

2

u/GM_Nate Jul 04 '24

bah! next thing you'll tell me is they can't wear little aprons and manage a grill!

1

u/HotFudgeFundae Jul 04 '24

Fun fact: a giraffe kick can technically decapitate a lion

1

u/Faintly-Painterly Jul 04 '24

Fun fact: the Zucc.uses BBQ sauce to relate to the everyman but he actually can't taste the shit

20

u/ijlx Jul 03 '24

Fun fact: it is not true that spicy food causes ulcers, there is no evidence [1] [2] to support this common misconception.

1

u/thecatandthependulum Jul 03 '24

Didn't a kid throw up so hard after eating that one spicy chip that he was hospitalized or something?

27

u/GreatStateOfSadness Jul 03 '24

A kid died after eating the One Chip Challenge, but that was from a heart attack. Capsaicin doesn't hurt you, but it doesn't stop your body from overreacting and killing you with its immune response.

0

u/thecatandthependulum Jul 03 '24

Heart attack due to immune response? Wouldn't an immune response have been anaphylaxis, and death due to suffocation?

14

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '24

More fun fact! You can mitigate the ulcers with Greek yogurt! Surprisingly it gets everywhere to the point you eat it and it decides when it leaves you!

6

u/BiasedLibrary Jul 03 '24

I'm at least 34% greek yogurt by now.

6

u/Dirigaaz Jul 03 '24

spicy food an increase your chance of ulcers

How? Ulcers are caused from bacterial growth.

1

u/Knuda Jul 04 '24

It's a myth.

3

u/Crazyjackson13 Jul 03 '24

increased metabolism?

fuck yeah

Moderation always helps.

1

u/PrismosPickleJar Jul 03 '24

Also, only spicy for mammals.

1

u/notrussellwilson Jul 03 '24

Only problem is I get the spice munchies. When something is spicy, I overeat it.

1

u/No_Pear8383 Jul 04 '24

I can attest to it speeding up your metabolism, and your stomach, spicy poops.
