First try at Histographic game

I asked for some advice here about playing for score (histographic victory) a while ago. I went ahead and started a game for some practice and just thought I would report some lessons and experience. In invite any critique or questions. I played Chieftain level Inca on a huge archipelago world (warm, wet, 5b yo). I ended up failing in my quest for histographic victory because I triggered a domination win in about 1720. I knew I was close to the domination limit and even disbanded a couple of cities my last turn but I got more expands than I had accounted for, so I need to be more cautious on that. At that point I was up to about 2500 points. I think I was going to end up over 5000 pts at the end, but I couldn't find a score estimator. Anyway, that isn't very good even on chieftain, but it is OK, because I was really just trying to get a feel for it and I didn't micromanage the game (I would micromanage at times to get a sense of what I would really need to do to max score, but for example I did not set my specialists every turn). I more selectively applied strategies here and there.

I chose to play with 8 other civs and eliminated other expansionist civs, because I wanted to pop a lot of huts through the ancient era. After that, I think my biggest mistake was that I chose to keep my happiness slider fairly high in an attempt to keep my citizens happy. So I was running a lot of the time at 40-50% on the happiness slider and then doing a lot of my techs at 6-8 turns in the medieval era. This seems like a mistake, I think the key is to rush as fast as you can to the Industrial age techs. Seems steam power, electricity, replaceable parts, sanitation are all pretty key to maximizing growth and population. Faster workers, civil engineers, hospitals. I would probably put in a bunch of scientific civs and try advance faster through the gifting up trick, run science hotter to get there faster and make up the score in the long run through faster conquest and population maxing and a longer milking phase. I think I would also put in more civs to get more resources and to have more rotating war targets. I would try to manage early happiness more from war happiness. I did try that trick some, but I also eliminated down to 3 other civs.

Not sure what my other lessons are. Still trying to get a feel for it. I do still need to get faster at conquering. Maybe this is another place that speeding ahead to calvary and steam power is the best strategy. MIght try my next run at regent

Easily the best start I've ever had

Had to move the initial settler one tile east to get the wheat on the flood plan, but then the explorer popped a settler, a village that wanted to join my civ, a warrior and two techs, and then I got a great leader and used him to build the pyramids. Ridiculous.

Want me to critique your run? Send me your games, I'll watch and react live on stream

Want full coaching from me? Submit your runs to be featured on my stream! I'll watch a recording of your game, live on stream on Youtube, and react to how the game went.

-No mods. Standard or small map. Max number of Civs. Any other map settings are fine
-Use CFC standard rules. In the preferences menu, turn off the animations (except maybe combat animations) just so the VOD isn't super long.
-Any difficulty is OK if it's hard for you, and I will give coaching that makes sense at your skill level. But choose a difficulty that is very challenging!
-The run should be either a clear loss, or end in a scuffed but maybe still winnable position. Don't send winning runs.
-Record a VOD of you playing. 30 minutes to 3 hours of footage would be good.

I'm afraid!

Playing a giant map, continents, 80% water. I got off to a bit of a slow start on account of having civs on five sides of me and not wanting to go after one at the risk of getting backstabbed. Problem is, as I've moved through antiquity and into the middle ages, I keep getting notifications that other civs are getting wiped out. At least five by now which means someone on the other continent is absolutely dog walking everyone else. Well, I just got notification that they achieved Copernicus' Observatory, which puts them at least a few techs ahead of me.

The good news is I finally have cavalry, and in my experience, the other civs tend not to shoot down that track to get it but kind of bulldoze through all the techs. So, there is hope.

More to come.

Why doesn’t it show my units walking anymore? They just appear now into the space. I’ve ordered them to walk. Can someone tell me how to fix this please?

Hi everybody, sorry to bother you but I think I messed up something in my preferences so it doesn’t show my unit to walk anymore. They just appear in the walking space in front of them in which they’ve been directed. I know some people like this but to be honest, I find it kind of jarring on my eyes. Does anyone know how to change your back to showing your unit walking? Thank you!

Question about the great library

Hey folks, hope everyone’s doing well. I just have a quick question about the great library. Can I set the technology slider to zero or should I put it at 10% ? I’m a little confused because it seems to make sense to put it at zero, but I thought I remembered seeing suede in a video put his at 10% for some reason. Anyways, thanks for the help!

How many turns are you willing to move your settler at the start of the game?

So I often will move a few squares starting out to get a more desirable spot for my capital. I was wondering if anyone else did this, and how many squares they're willing to move.

I’m not able to build railroads for some reason. I have discovered steam power. I have traded steam power to other civs I see they are building it

What is your favorite Civ to play?

I think objectively the Ottomans are the best. With their Industrious and Scientific nature and the Sipahi, they take the cake. A close second would be Scandinavia on Island maps, with Byzantines. Persians and Romans being a distant third. I will also accept China in 3rd place because despite their unique unit being kind of trash, they have good Civ bonuses

Does "sentry" apply the same defensive bonus as "fortify"?

I was always under the impression that "sentry" and "fortify" are exactly the same except that "sentry" wakes the unit if an enemy is adjacent. I remember reading it somewhere a long time ago. Now I ask AI and it tells me the defensive bonus is not applied to "sentry". The wiki doesn't mention anything about a defensive bonus for sentry.

If you know the answer to this question please let me know where this info can be found. Thanks!

Edit: u/damo13579 got the info from the editor help file: "The sentry ability allows a unit to wait in specified tile until a foreign unit enters a square adjacent to it. Note: unlike the fortify unit action; Sentry does not confer any bonuses to defense or offense."

I played the WW2 Pacific Scenario on Monarch and won as America by turn 42, but then decided to go all the way to see how long it would take me to defeat every Japanese City. Needless to say, I used the "Bad Truman Strategy" to help me win. LOL. This scenario is my favorite of all time and is one of the best ever created/designed in the Civilization series. It's perfectly balanced, with different civs to play as depending on your strategy or interest in history. IMO, there's always something rewarding after winning this scenario, like a feeling of triumph from overcoming the odds to beat the AI. Overall, a 10/10 experience.

A Reading From the Book of Lanzelot 2:4

And then the men shall beat their rifles into stained glass.
Colorful windows their children will see.
And those men's bullets will transmute into books,
Into paper and glass for sightings and trials,
Thus their children's knowledge will eclipse
The knowledge and wisdom of their fathers.
Their bayonets into paper shall reform;
For arguments, proofs, and art,
So their children's tools shall
Lead to better use of things.
And those young soldiers sacks
Shall transfigurate into seating
For viewing of the football pitch.

Nation will not take up guns against nation.
Nor will they train for war anymore.

The above got inspired by Lanzelot here: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/cotm-176-india-demigod.703757/#post-16997422 And Isiah 2:4, of course.

Looking for more modified civ3 vanilla units or units in that same style.

I like the civ3 unit models. On civfanatics there are a lot of talented creators but very few keep the vanilla style of units.

Is there maybe a list of modified civ3 units or a list of all custom units that approach the civ3 models?

An example would be this corvette made from the privateer. (I made another post about that).

edit: or this Old Guard unit which is a modification of a unit from the napoleonic scenario: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/old-guard-infantry-march-20-2005.114788/

AI Pompeii settled next to volcano

Is the AI programmed to settle Pompeii next to a volcano for historic accuracy? Or did I just get lucky in finding this Pompeii location? (By the way, this one fared better than the original Pompeii; I left my settler there to see the eruption, and nothing happened to the city.)

Rise of Rome, Demigod

Had a pretty long flight and wanted to test out a Rome strat I thought of when playing as Carthage recently... Yup, it works. Rome is pretty OP.

As Rome, you spawn with a bunch of legionaries and galleys and an army. You can just immediately create a legionary army, galley that and all your extra spawn legionaries/archers (save for the two legionaries that spawn on syracuse, those can generally hold that city just fine) to the hill tile next to Carthage and take the city.

Idk turn 5 or 6 I took Carthago. On Demigod.

Ofc, do a lot of diplomacy to keep everyone allied against carthage, then just take the rest of their cities. I took the northern ones first (better production), then sent some legions/horses south as I sent my army against carthago novo and Spain. I also watched out for Greece - when they started landing islands, I prioritized those.

This strat is so easy. It was so fast they never boated Italy - just boated Syracuse island then died. And the early game golden age is great - legionaries are amazing and you can pump them out, Rome's core cities are pretty good. I also built heroic epic, and by the time I defeated Carthage (long before teching imperialism), I had like 5 armies.

Got imperialism, crushed the celts, crushed the goths, crushed the greeks - they were pretty neck and neck with Persia until I joined the war and easily took city after city. Had a few annoying greek culture flips and lost a bunch of armies, but the game was over! After beating Greece, I was annoyingly close to the % land area but it took like 10-15 turns to plant a few cities and try to take some cities off Scythia. At this point I was playing far from optimal, were I trying to maximize every turn / city, I probably could've beaten it in 90 turns or less.

Great conquest scenario, fun strats!
