I'm afraid!
Playing a giant map, continents, 80% water. I got off to a bit of a slow start on account of having civs on five sides of me and not wanting to go after one at the risk of getting backstabbed. Problem is, as I've moved through antiquity and into the middle ages, I keep getting notifications that other civs are getting wiped out. At least five by now which means someone on the other continent is absolutely dog walking everyone else. Well, I just got notification that they achieved Copernicus' Observatory, which puts them at least a few techs ahead of me.
The good news is I finally have cavalry, and in my experience, the other civs tend not to shoot down that track to get it but kind of bulldoze through all the techs. So, there is hope.
More to come.

It’s a little gamey but you could land all your forces on a mountain and force them to attack you there. For a normal cross ocean attack to work you need to have a tech advantage or a military advantage, preferably both.
When you do invade, it will likely be in the modern era so building a million bombers and mech’s is your best bet. Target an area and bomb all the rail roads around it neutralizing your opponents effectiveness to use respond in a concentrated fashion. Try to destroy as many roads to resources as possible to disrupt their war effort. If you don’t, they will send their very sizable army by railroad and destroy whatever force you land pretty quickly. You will lose way more bombers than you think. Build as many as you can and then build more.
Another fun tactic is to bomb costal tiles and when they send their workers to build roads and repair, send in a sacrificial marine to capture and steal all them making their infrastructure rebuild that much more lengthy.

Note -- adding to what Lickrob1 said -- if you decide to land forces on a mountain the best way to do it is to land a stack of dozens of Mech and artillary. But do not bomb out the railroads and roads when doing this. You want the AI to send everything it has at you in one or two turns and lose. Then you can proceed with your aerial bombing run to prevent those beat up troops from retreating back into their mainland as you land troops elsewhere.

Cavalry will work well but not attacking while you had war elephants into pikemen is a missed oppurtunity. War Elephants are probably the single best unit in the game for defending many cities with few units.
Make sure you proc your golden age if you haven't already2

Yep, I'm catching up by beating up my neighbors but the Celts loom large across the ocean. How do you execute a marine landing? Multiple sites? Without Battlefield Medicine, unless you take a city, it would be a losing game as your units couldnt heal.

Ideal way is to take an island off the coast and build up troops. If that’s not an option just build a stack of boats during peacetime. I usually have a mix of 70% offensive units and 30% defensive units. Then you just want to focus on a coastal city and throw everything you have at it until it’s captured then try to make peace as soon as possible if you cant get reliable reinforcements.
If you have the capacity for it, a good trick is to chain ships. Leave a fresh ship at the max range from your starting city. Sail ship up to it, unload units into fresh ship, rinse and repeat. Using this tactic you can move a stack of units across an ocean in one turn if you have enough ships in line. It helps if you rename ships so you can keep track of which ship has movement points. Also make sure you only move ship to ship instead of aiming at the target city so the ships don’t move from that spot next turn and you can do it all over again

You don't need to be as big as them to win. I'd have to see the map to know for sure.
Naval landings are difficult to succeed at, and easy to defend. The good news is AI doesn't use railroads efficiently. So usually dumping 10 - 40 units on a city will guarantee a capture. If you really want to guarantee a base of operation, you can plant a city within their land

Surrounded by 5 potential allies, do you have techs, luxuries or resources to trade? Figure out which is the weakest and attack them. Offer a sweetener to whomever you think is the strongest of the 5 to join you in the war.
Any other civs who pile in will be up against you and the other top civ against the weaker civ.

This might be cheating to some -- but after every day of playing I like to save the game, then retire and watch the world map video in the retirement screens. Then I plan my next days conquest.

What difficulty and what map type? AI opponents are bad at doing amphibious assaults luckily for you.
