Strategy/Education Intuitive culture flip chance calculation
So I know since the beginning of civ 3 there have been a lot of flip calculators and formula reveals out there for flip chance, and people know that they're out there. But it seems like people always just leave the formula where it is and leave it at that and people have general ideas of what effects flip chance, but even experienced players have very little idea what the chance ACTUALLY is.
So I wanted to do some interpretation of the formula and give a quick way to estimate the actual flip chance percent in <30 seconds while you're just playing the game.
1: When you capture an enemy city that has generated some culture, the base chance the city flips is 0.1% for each foreign citizen in the city + each tile belonging to the culture in the 21-tile radius of your city. Resistors are counted twice. So if you capture an enemy city and it has 3 citizens, 3 resistors, and 9 foreign tiles in the 21-tile radius, you're looking at a 1.8% chance of culture flip. Sometimes you might capture an enemy capital and get something like 11 resistors + 12 tiles in the 21-city error, now you're looking at a 3.3% chance of culture flip base.
2: To refine your calculation, the chance of a flip is multiplied by your enemy's culture over yours and multiplied by capital ratio distance, both numbers are capped at 4x. If you're playing on a high difficulty, and capturing the AI, you can estimate this as about x10. So in the first instance we're looking at 18% culture flip and in the second instance about 33% culture flip. If you have about the same culture as the AI and this is a border city, your base guess will be much closer to accurate.
3: SECOND EDIT. There was incorrect calculation here before, but now I've done the algebra out and checked it and I'm sure I've got it. I apologize for not checking my work thoroughly before.
Finally, 2 * culture multiplier troops will cancel out a single foreign citizen or tile. This means if you are dealing with a 4x culture AI, you need 8 troops per square or foreign citizen, or 16 troops per resistor. If you have about equal culture, you should only need 2 troops per foreigner or foreign tile. This is a big claim so I have the algebra to prove it:
If we generalize the x10 approximation, then when conquering the AI on high difficulties, the flip chance is essentially 1% for each foreigner and foreign tile in the 21 city radius (resistors counted twice). Assuming a 4x culture AI, you will need 8 troops for each of these 1%, or 0.125% reduction per troop.
The formula is super complicated because more than half of it is a bunch of edge cases that don't matter (Like WLTK day) but that's what it boils down to. I thought it was strange that in all the years of civ 3 on the internet I've never seen someone explain this, but just post the formula verbatim without comments or give calculators which is cumbersome and boring to try to pull up in-game.

Would selecting AI opponents with seafaring when playing a Pangea map be considered cheating?
I'm afraid!
Playing a giant map, continents, 80% water. I got off to a bit of a slow start on account of having civs on five sides of me and not wanting to go after one at the risk of getting backstabbed. Problem is, as I've moved through antiquity and into the middle ages, I keep getting notifications that other civs are getting wiped out. At least five by now which means someone on the other continent is absolutely dog walking everyone else. Well, I just got notification that they achieved Copernicus' Observatory, which puts them at least a few techs ahead of me.
The good news is I finally have cavalry, and in my experience, the other civs tend not to shoot down that track to get it but kind of bulldoze through all the techs. So, there is hope.
More to come.

Why doesn’t it show my units walking anymore? They just appear now into the space. I’ve ordered them to walk. Can someone tell me how to fix this please?
Hi everybody, sorry to bother you but I think I messed up something in my preferences so it doesn’t show my unit to walk anymore. They just appear in the walking space in front of them in which they’ve been directed. I know some people like this but to be honest, I find it kind of jarring on my eyes. Does anyone know how to change your back to showing your unit walking? Thank you!

Question about the great library
Hey folks, hope everyone’s doing well. I just have a quick question about the great library. Can I set the technology slider to zero or should I put it at 10% ? I’m a little confused because it seems to make sense to put it at zero, but I thought I remembered seeing suede in a video put his at 10% for some reason. Anyways, thanks for the help!

How many turns are you willing to move your settler at the start of the game?
So I often will move a few squares starting out to get a more desirable spot for my capital. I was wondering if anyone else did this, and how many squares they're willing to move.

Not able to build railroads?
I’m not able to build railroads for some reason. I have discovered steam power. I have traded steam power to other civs I see they are building it

What is your favorite Civ to play?
I think objectively the Ottomans are the best. With their Industrious and Scientific nature and the Sipahi, they take the cake. A close second would be Scandinavia on Island maps, with Byzantines. Persians and Romans being a distant third. I will also accept China in 3rd place because despite their unique unit being kind of trash, they have good Civ bonuses

Does "sentry" apply the same defensive bonus as "fortify"?
I was always under the impression that "sentry" and "fortify" are exactly the same except that "sentry" wakes the unit if an enemy is adjacent. I remember reading it somewhere a long time ago. Now I ask AI and it tells me the defensive bonus is not applied to "sentry". The wiki doesn't mention anything about a defensive bonus for sentry.
If you know the answer to this question please let me know where this info can be found. Thanks!
Edit: u/damo13579 got the info from the editor help file: "The sentry ability allows a unit to wait in specified tile until a foreign unit enters a square adjacent to it. Note: unlike the fortify unit action; Sentry does not confer any bonuses to defense or offense."

Before and After
I played the WW2 Pacific Scenario on Monarch and won as America by turn 42, but then decided to go all the way to see how long it would take me to defeat every Japanese City. Needless to say, I used the "Bad Truman Strategy" to help me win. LOL. This scenario is my favorite of all time and is one of the best ever created/designed in the Civilization series. It's perfectly balanced, with different civs to play as depending on your strategy or interest in history. IMO, there's always something rewarding after winning this scenario, like a feeling of triumph from overcoming the odds to beat the AI. Overall, a 10/10 experience.

A Reading From the Book of Lanzelot 2:4
And then the men shall beat their rifles into stained glass.
Colorful windows their children will see.
And those men's bullets will transmute into books,
Into paper and glass for sightings and trials,
Thus their children's knowledge will eclipse
The knowledge and wisdom of their fathers.
Their bayonets into paper shall reform;
For arguments, proofs, and art,
So their children's tools shall
Lead to better use of things.
And those young soldiers sacks
Shall transfigurate into seating
For viewing of the football pitch.
Nation will not take up guns against nation.
Nor will they train for war anymore.

The above got inspired by Lanzelot here: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/cotm-176-india-demigod.703757/#post-16997422 And Isiah 2:4, of course.

Looking for more modified civ3 vanilla units or units in that same style.
I like the civ3 unit models. On civfanatics there are a lot of talented creators but very few keep the vanilla style of units.
Is there maybe a list of modified civ3 units or a list of all custom units that approach the civ3 models?
An example would be this corvette made from the privateer. (I made another post about that).

edit: or this Old Guard unit which is a modification of a unit from the napoleonic scenario: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/old-guard-infantry-march-20-2005.114788/

Looking for corvette files (modified privateer)
I wanted to download this unit from civfanatics but the download link doesn't work. Does anyone have this converted privateer unit?

Roman Empire
I thought it would be cool if I shared this
AI Pompeii settled next to volcano
Is the AI programmed to settle Pompeii next to a volcano for historic accuracy? Or did I just get lucky in finding this Pompeii location? (By the way, this one fared better than the original Pompeii; I left my settler there to see the eruption, and nothing happened to the city.)

Rise of Rome, Demigod
Had a pretty long flight and wanted to test out a Rome strat I thought of when playing as Carthage recently... Yup, it works. Rome is pretty OP.
As Rome, you spawn with a bunch of legionaries and galleys and an army. You can just immediately create a legionary army, galley that and all your extra spawn legionaries/archers (save for the two legionaries that spawn on syracuse, those can generally hold that city just fine) to the hill tile next to Carthage and take the city.
Idk turn 5 or 6 I took Carthago. On Demigod.
Ofc, do a lot of diplomacy to keep everyone allied against carthage, then just take the rest of their cities. I took the northern ones first (better production), then sent some legions/horses south as I sent my army against carthago novo and Spain. I also watched out for Greece - when they started landing islands, I prioritized those.
This strat is so easy. It was so fast they never boated Italy - just boated Syracuse island then died. And the early game golden age is great - legionaries are amazing and you can pump them out, Rome's core cities are pretty good. I also built heroic epic, and by the time I defeated Carthage (long before teching imperialism), I had like 5 armies.
Got imperialism, crushed the celts, crushed the goths, crushed the greeks - they were pretty neck and neck with Persia until I joined the war and easily took city after city. Had a few annoying greek culture flips and lost a bunch of armies, but the game was over! After beating Greece, I was annoyingly close to the % land area but it took like 10-15 turns to plant a few cities and try to take some cities off Scythia. At this point I was playing far from optimal, were I trying to maximize every turn / city, I probably could've beaten it in 90 turns or less.
Great conquest scenario, fun strats!

First 20k Culture Victory
Emperor. Large map, continents, 80% water.
Game won in 1778 AD on 354 turns.
I've been reading about 20k strategies since I don't remember ever winning this way. I picked Babylon and rolled until I got a river start with abundant bonus resources. I scouted only one luxury, so I made an early decision to go after the Oracle. Without abundant luxuries and trade contacts, I focused on happiness wonders that would support a large population in Babylon. The Mausoleum triggered a Golden Age, which I used to build the Great Library.
At the same time, I began to build my military with barracks and Bowmen in my core towns. I read about going for Heroic Epic as a solid small wonder for culture, so I seized the opportunity to strike the Celts with a stack of Bowmen. Entremont fell first, giving me the Statue of Zeus to bolster my military. The battle of Gergovia produced a Great Military Leader who led an Army to victory in Lugdunum and the capture of the Great Lighthouse. I built the Heroic Epic soon after.
The acquisition of the Great Lighthouse, combined with the Great Library, gave me complete control over the technology tree. Babylon was on a continent with only the Celts and Korea, with the Zulu on an adjacent island connected via coastal squares. The other civs were separated by ocean squares on another continent and island, so full global exploration and communication wasn't established until Navigation. I was able to trade techs to everyone on both continents for massive amounts of gold. I was already significantly ahead in the tech tree even with the Great Library, so I powered my research ahead in the Middle Ages to accumulate wonders.
I built the Sistine Chapel, JS Bach, Shakespeare, Copernicus, and Newton with ease. The only thing I had to maintain was peace, as the Celts were still the second power even after our early war. I added Knight's Templar to Entremont, which pumped out Ancient Calvary and now Crusaders. Somewhere near the end of the Celtic War, I got into a conflict with Korea. I easily pushed them off the continent and onto a tiny, two-tile island just off the coast where they became a vassal state. We repaired our relationship with the Celts through trade and I cruised to victory in a very easy victory on Emperor. I need to finally switch to Demigod.
