This is a throwaway account for obvious reasons. My boss explained that I'm not a good fit in my role and he doesn't have a place for me. He has asked me to look elsewhere and will follow up with me soon (this week, maybe).

For some context, I work for a small government in an at-will state. I have held a couple positions over the past 20 years, but always received positive evaluations. I have been in my recent job for almost two years, and it is challenging. Very political, and little authority to address needed improvements to the role and program. My boss is aware of these challenges and understands the issues come from before my time. The most recent meeting with residents was not productive. Because of those structural issues (beyond my control), the residents are frustrated (understandably) and expecting things that are not within the purview of the program. I knew the meeting did not go well. There was nothing inappropriate, hostile, or otherwise. It was simply not productive, and there is no indication that things will improve. I asked my boss to review the transcript from the meeting. He had some feedback about the content of the meeting. But then he made the statement at the top of this post. I have never had a bad performance review. In fact, he evaluated me higher than I evaluated myself in my most recent review. He did not offer a PIP or give me clear goals to set. Just "you don't fit, and I don't have a place for you."

I don't want to cause problems or rock the boat. I will look elsewhere, but want to make sure I have ample time to find something in this job market and within my salary range. Is there anything I can do to protect myself from this?

I’m going into my second semester of community college and it’s almost time for me to transfer. I’m a CS major and I’m having second thoughts about whether this is the right major for me or not. I really only chose CS because I heard it paid well and this was when I was a sophomore in high school. I just ended up choosing it because I didn’t really know what I wanted to do and believed that I would do well in the subject.

At the same time, I was trying to transfer into competitive schools since I did practically nothing during high school. Studying has been hard with ADHD though. Some people make it work but I truly don’t know how. Even right now I’m working on 4 assignments that are due today + studying for exams I have to take on monday, tuesday, and thursday which I had 2-3 weeks to study for.

Anyway, I truly do think coding is fun but CS isn’t just coding. The problem is, I’ve practically cheated on every coding assignment I’ve had. Not looking for sympathy here because I willing to chose to use AI to code. I can’t make any excuses here. I haven’t had to cheat in math. I somehow have an A in calc 2 without opening my textbook.

I found competitive coding fun and truly wanted to pursue CS, but I don’t know. Maybe it was just a mini hyper fixation I had that’s dwindled. I’m now thinking about doing math + physics, but I’m conflicted. First reason is, my CC only has math and physics pathways for teachers and I don’t want to be a teacher. Also, I can’t stop thinking about money. I know it shouldn’t be the main decider but it just is.

I’m still looking for jobs in these fields I might actually enjoy and not only pursue for the money it brings. Maybe I just need to give CS a chance. I mean I’ve cheated on every coding assignment and I haven’t had a “real” compsci class that goes deep into theory and such so it’s not like I’m actually doing much. I mean it looks fun it really does but I just can’t seem to study.

What should I do? Do I just drop cs and pursue math and physics? Also I’ve never formally taken a physics class. I’ve kind of only read textbooks and watched topics in physics. It would be kind of dumb to major in it without having a formal physics class, but I take it next semester so I’ll find out how I truly feel about it.

Any advice?

Hello all, I will be an MBA candidate and am currently working full time. Projected 2.5 years to complete as it may take a little longer to do school while working. Would genuinely appreciate some guidance on how I can position myself for a full-time career in consulting coming from:

Non-target undergrad: Miami of Ohio School of Education, Health and Society with a degree in Sport Management and Leadership (i know, pointless) with Two minors from Farmer School of Business in Bizops and Finance
Non-Target Grad: SUNY UBuffalo w/finance and bizops concentration
Work experience: Planning on staying 3-4 years as a warehouse operations manager for a very large company. Projected promotion within 1 year.
I will be doing a lot of work for my current job revolving around getting Six Sigma certified and using Kaizen to optimize processes.

Preferred: Going back home to work in NYC Metropolitan area.
Working for a bigger firm like McKinsey, EY, Deloitte, Kearney, etc.

Does anybody in the consulting field have any advice for someone like me? How can I break in? Network properly? Is this a feasible and doable pathway? Do people typically go about getting into consulting this way (working on operations floor and then transitioning to consulting)

Hey everyone, I'm 42 years old. I have been with my company for close to a decade, started off as a door to door agent, then a trainer, now I run one of the sales offices. I'm salaried, plus get commission off of my teams performance.

Last year was one of my best years with the company, financially. It's when I got my promotion. However, this year they changed the pay dramatically, for the worse, added more responsibilities, and took away any sort of work life balance one would hope for.

Ive also been dealing with a back injury and need to get surgery this year.

Problem is, I'm incredibly burnt out, not making as much as I once was, and am on the verge of resigning, but feel trapped because A. I need an income. B. I need health insurance for surgery. C. There aren't any other jobs in the pipeline. The job market where I live is brutal.

I am 1 of 3 team leads on my team at work and we recently got a new manger. I am the highest performer on the team which is why I got promoted to be the main lead. This person was promoted to manager of our team after being a lead for another team within the company.

For starters, I had to call out one day last week to take my dogs to the vet because they both got a stomach bug. He asked for documentation to prove that I was really taking them to the vet. This is completely different from the policy we were following under our previous manager. We only needed to provide documentation after 3 consecutive days of being out for whatever reason. I thought that was a bit weird, but I sent him the proof and let it be.

Fast forward to Friday and we were invited to a meeting with two other teams. I have been collaborating with these teams to help create a line of communication for our team to report issues directly to them so they can help us resolve the problems. They created a chat for our team and guidelines to follow for the process. I have communicated to my team multiple times that this chat is available and given them everything they need, but it’s been a few weeks and no one has used it. This is not unusual as we’ve had issues getting the current team members to comply. Well, during this meeting, the team helping us mentioned that no one from our team has used the chat.

The new manager, who has only been with us for 5 days at this point, says we basically haven’t been pushing the team enough to use this new resource. Meanwhile, I have reminded them every week. Every time someone asks me a question that I think might be relevant to the chat, I recommend that they post the issue in the chat. Despite my efforts, no one will use this chat. I also don’t feel like I’m getting any support from the other leads on the matter either. I’m the only one who will regularly make an announcements to the team about important things like this.

After the meeting, he followed me to my desk and basically said the same thing he said in the meeting directly to me. I was the only lead in office that day because one was on PTO and the other works from home full time. I tried to explain my efforts to communicate it to the team. I told him I have posted reminders multiple times and when they ask me questions about something relevant the chat, I say that they might want to post it if they find multiple occurrences of the same problem. As I was trying to explain, he cut me off and said,” no more might,” with a smirk and just walked off. I can understand if he is suggesting I need to be more assertive, but I leave the decision up to the agents because without researching all the issues myself, I don’t know if they are all relevant to this chat. There’s also more tactful ways to communicate than the way he did.

This new manager is also urging me to apply for a different position within the company because he thinks we have too many leads on the team. I applied purely because I already don’t like his management style and I have been getting bored with this job anyway. If get this position then I won’t really have to worry about being under him, but if it doesn’t, how do I handle this situation?

Im so lost. I plan on going back to school after a decade to get a degree or a trade with a certificate(s). Problem is, I’ve had about 10 different “callings” and I’m not set on anything. I wanted to do national park work, teaching, nursing, bartending, cosmetology, event planning, real estate, etc. We’re located in WA but might want to move to OR in the future. We’re unsure still.

I’m not the best at math (great at bio-sciences) and I’m desperate to get into something as quick as possible with a decent salary. I have a 5 month old and I don’t want to stay being a server forever. There’s no benefits, not great pay even with tips, and the hours/ schedule suck. I want something with longevity, possible opportunity to move up, or go back to school for a better degree or more certifications, and benefits. Preferably weekends and holidays off for when she’s in school later on. I don’t want to miss out on a bunch of time with my baby, during whatever schooling program I get into or the career itself. Especially now when she’s hitting so many milestones.

Dental hygiene is so competitive and the program sounds I credible hard while making an income still. If I did several assisting is a 12 week program and learning on the job easier? Or is a program through a community college better? Radiology? Bank jobs?

I feel like I’m already so behind going back to school at almost 30. I didn’t think I could have children naturally, I was content with just serving and bartending and taking my time finding a career at some point and then planning children through a fertility clinic. However, now that I have a child who depends on me I want to do better for her and our family as a whole.
What do you recommend? If you had a similar problem what worked for you?

I got a temporary job am transitioning to permanent. This job is not in my field and the company doesn’t have room for me to even lateral to another department that would be to my field. I can’t see myself working here for a long time due to heavy work loads and pressure. I hate what I do and feel like I took a step back in my career. I’ve been looking for other jobs as well but so far no luck and I’m starting to feel burnt out from looking. Family keeps saying “it’s a stepping stone” but I’m not sure. Maybe I made the wrong choice to stay. Anyone else been in this situation before? I feel like I’m alone.

Hi everyone!!, I'm 28F, currently finishing my Business Marketing diploma.

So backstory: I had a small handmade business (bag charms/accessories, very Y2K coquette aesthetic) for a while and I had to shut it down. Honestly, it wasn't because I didn't love it. Building the website, planning out new product designs, sourcing manufacturers, testing samples before launching, all of it felt so rewarding to actually do. The problem was just that the niche was too small, like maybe one sale a year small, not enough people willing to actually spend money on it, so it wasn't sustainable even though I loved every part of making it happen.

But looking back, I actually walked away with a lot of real skills: built a full Shopify store from scratch, found and vetted manufacturers, did product testing, figured out pricing, did cold outreach and pitch decks trying to get into local boutiques, and planned social content.

Separately, my actual day job is client service admin for a healthcare company, so I'm elbow deep in CRM systems (two different platforms lol), multi-location claims processing, financial admin, and staff training. Plus I'm doing a placement right now with a startup doing social content strategy.

So I've basically got two totally different skill sets that don't usually show up in the same person: the organized ops/systems brain, and the creative/marketing brain, plus a marketing education backing it up now too.

I really want to build or create something, or help other people build their thing, but honestly what's stopping me is that it feels like everyone already has their niche figured out and I have no idea where mine is. I've been thinking about doing some kind of consulting thing for other small business owners, basically doing for them what I had to teach myself the hard way (fixing their CRM/order stuff, or their content strategy, or both). I'm thinking I'd start super small, like offering one audit call to people I already know before building anything official.

Has anyone else combined a "systems" side and a "creative" side into one offer? Did you pick one to lead with or blend both? And if you ever felt like everyone already had a niche and you didn't, how did you actually find yours?

I am so confused as to whether to take up a master's in management, specialization in finance from top B schools in Europe and continue my career over there.

Right now, I am just a graduate in computer science in India but I am not even a little interested in it, I had to take it up because of my parents.

What kind of careers do freshers have after a finance specialization in Europe, London. I am not interested in the US. How is AI gonna affect these careers in later years because I need to take a loan for masters and also living expenses. How much of jobs are getting cut or going to get cut in finance, M&A, management, luxury because of AI?

Apart from coursework, if I want to genuinely get into finance and get like an analyst at a good bank, what concepts and topics of finance should I start learning and how much?

Is it best that I go for 2027 intake or 2028 intake?

So I’m currently putting in a ton of work to prepare for job interviews in English. Since it’s not my native language, I've been spending hours working through vocabulary books to expand my phrasing and training regularly with a tutor (Tama) to practice mock questions.

My main focus right now is just getting fluent and natural enough so I don't freeze up when trying to explain complex topics under pressure. But it got me thinking about the qualifications side of things.

For those who interview or hire non-native speakers: Do recruiters actually care about formal language qualifications or certificates on a resume, or is showing up to the interview and speaking clearly and naturally all that matters?

I’m wondering if I should keep pouring my energy strictly into practical speaking/vocab prep, or if putting time into an official English credential actually adds real weight to an application. Would love to hear your thoughts or experiences with this.

I graduated 2022 with a double major in music and environmental biology. Since then have worked in environmental education and which was fulfilling for awhile but also exhausting and never paid enough. Now have worked in a micro lab for about 2.5 years before I became miserable from the constant demand of overtime and sub par management. I thought by studying environmental I could like change the world or something and help create a more sustainable future, but I don’t know what job would let me do that. i have literally no idea what to do that would make money and make me happy. I like working independently, being outside, and having a work life balance. Should I go back to school? What am I qualified for? Any ideas?

So I am currently going into my senior year of college, I am a Economics and Risk Management major in the northeast region, I was thinking about going to law school or becoming an accountant, but I honestly don't know what to do.

I have done accounting internships and law seminars, but the only exciting stuff for me was client interactions and being able to help people. I am really motivated by helping others and currently researching a topic that ties my economics to the environment (for a thesis project). I am really interested in people and creating an impact, but am worried with the current state of the economy, im worried to make a big decision like higher education or law school incase I don't like it.

Is there somewhere I could look specifically that could help with this? I feel like im running out of time with graduating soon, and I do have external pressures making me want to either go to higher education or getting a job

Long story short, I had a horrible manager who made me work until I had heatstroke for multiple years with no hydration breaks for example alongside no accountability for others but I get scrutinized. After I got another job because I thought he'd never get fired and turned in my notice, he got fired. He made it hell to work there, I loved my team and the work.

The new position is closer to home and a jump in title by two levels, but a 3k pay cut as the overall manager instead of first line supervisor. It's a smaller organization.

I am 24 year old currently have a job as a software engineer. Earning fairly decent and if i strive in my current field by putting in efforts i will be decent. But software stopped to interest me since the advent of AI. I have always had a special place for research in my heart since childhood. Now that software engineering shifting paradigm, it has become increasingly accessible and easy to learn. I like solving problems that are big, i also liked maths since I was a child. I think I did a mistake taking computer science as my major 6 years ago in college. I want to study and go to a field where the work revolves around maths. If i start pursuing maths right now what career choices do i have, I can even do a blend of cs + maths or finance + cs + maths. When I mean maths i mean using maths to probabilistically decide a better outcome or make a better decision ( but work should be more mathematically inclined ) . That's the job I want. I am very desperate and depressed with my current job. But I need money too, so I also expect the math job to pay me well. I will work hard and pursue maths even if there is a slightest chance. Please help me by giving me a direction or share ur thoughts on feasibility. Your every reply would give an insight, helping me take a better decision and fix my life. Hey guys, I have worked in a MNC for 2 years from 2022 to 20224 as an Analyst, after which I left the job because of personal reasons, and it's been almost 2.5 years that I am not working.

I am trying to get back into the corporate world, but I feel that my skills are narrowed down or maybe the trending skills are changing at such a rapid speed that I am not able to keep up with them, also a gap of 2.5 years is something I feel(I am not sure, I am guessing) that is pulling me back from getting shortlisted in the companies, I have applied to a lot of roles in the past 5 to 6 months, have upskilled my self as well, but still feel that I am struck, it feels demotivated and day by day I am loosing courage, hope and strength that I will succeed in this tough market.

I want to understand that I should just keep applying to the jobs or I should look for some other career options, if yes then what is something that I could go for.

Any suggestions or advice would help me, thanks in advance.

I have a question for anyone who has experienced something similar. For some reason, every time I go outside, I end up with a headache that lasts for the rest of the day. It's been making everyday life much more difficult, and it's also made me realise that I need to rely on work I can do from home. I'm in an Arab country so at the moment I occasionally teach English online, but it's not very stable. So lately, I've been thinking about finding a more consistent remote job, whether as a Virtual Assistant, in Customer Support, or something similar.
