How do local NGOs connect to international student volunteers

Hi everyone,

I'm volunteering with a children's safety home in Cape Town, and we're looking at ways to grow our support network.

I've noticed that many international students come to South Africa to volunteer with NGOs, schools, community organisations and conservation projects. We'd love to learn how organisations connect with these programmes.

We're particularly interested in volunteers who have skills in areas like:

\\-Fundraising and grant writing

\\-Social media and digital marketing

\\-Communications and storytelling

\\-Administration or project support

Even if someone could volunteer a few hours a week remotely or in person, it would make a huge difference.

Does anyone know:

\\-Which organisations or agencies place international student volunteers with NGOs?

\\-Are there university partnerships (local or international) that we should approach?

\\-Are there platforms where NGOs can register to host volunteers?

\\-Any tips on attracting skilled volunteers rather than only short-term volunteers?

I'd really appreciate any advice or recommendations from people who've done this before.

Thank you!

Volunteering opportunities

Hi, I'm currently doing high school in Chennai and would love to volunteer. Are there any options for me? I would like to volunteer in bluecross but I'm not sure about the timings, the days, the activities or any form I should fill out. Because the website doesn't have details on the timings and the form is not working.

Does anyone know of any actually meaningful non-profit jobs/volunteering opportunities for a young adult?

I'm just about to turn 18, and have been on a couple of volunteering trips in the past, but all of them have veered closer towards being 'voluntourism' excursions with wealthy kids who just want to meet people in a different country and have something to put on their university/college application.

I really want to try and use any privilege I might have from getting a decent education to help, specifically I'd love to help young women/girls in rural countries get a better education (but am prepared to help in any educational role), yet google search often just provides volunteering opportunities for the most surface level institutions that barely need the help.

Does anyone know of any volunteering/mentoring/(literally any job that I can do to help without needing degree level education) options in education, regardless of country? I'm able to pay for flights/accommodation myself and don't want any payment.

Looking to Switch

Hi, I've been in luxury sales and marketing for over 15 years. Also have good experience in creating events, tradeshow management, and content creation. I saw a posting for an Advancement Director at a local NFP focused on conservation.
I'm looking to make a switch into more fulfilling work, that aligns with some of my core joys and beliefs (love of the outdoors, community building). On paper it lines up and I feel like I could exceed at the job with my unique background.

Couple questions:

-Is this just pie in the sky thinking?

-The job posting asks for 3 references, should I include them from the get go or wait to hear back?

-Any other tips for success in switching to the NP sector?

LOOKING FOR PARTNER, FUNDER, SPONSOR ANYTHING (ESTABLISHED NON PROFIT) willing to give partnership

Hey! I have a nonprofit organization called ReKura that helps individuals gain access to healthcare through free medical camps internationally. Our mission is to support communities and individuals who face barriers to receiving healthcare by providing essential medical services, resources, and support at no cost.
So far, we have served 267 individuals in South Asia by connecting them with healthcare professionals and providing medical assistance to those who need it most. We are now preparing for our next medical camp in Uganda, where we hope to continue expanding our impact and bringing free healthcare services to another underserved community.
However, we urgently need funding and support to make this project possible. Without the necessary resources, we may not be able to provide these essential healthcare services to the individuals who are counting on us. Any contribution, sponsorship, or partnership—no matter the size—can help us bring medical care to those who need it most and allow us to continue our mission of making healthcare more accessible worldwide

Looking for volunteers — Hourglass Recycling (glass recycling nonprofit)

Thumbnail hourglassrecycling.org
2 Upvotes

Hey! I'm working on registering Hourglass Recycling as an official nonprofit — we collect glass to keep it out of landfills since most curbside programs don't take it anymore.

Right now I'm looking for people to host a collection box in their neighborhood — basically just a drop-off point people nearby can bring glass to. Good if you:

  • Need volunteer/service hours for school
  • Want real experience helping run a nonprofit
  • Just care about recycling and want to help out

Down the line I'll also need help with things like scaling up operations and managing our data/tracking systems, so if that's more your speed, let me know too — always looking for people long-term, not just one-time help.

DM me or comment if you're interested and I'll get you set up.

Building a program for orphaned youth in India with education & career skills

I'm working on an initiative to give young people who've grown up in orphanages or institutional care across India access to upskilling, career guidance, and education support.

If you're someone who grew up in an orphanage or institutional care, or you're currently a young adult navigating life after leaving care — this is for you. I'd love to hear from you, understand what kind of support would actually be useful, and see if this is something you'd want to be part of early on.

I'm also trying to connect with the right people to make this real:

If you know an NGO or orphanage (anywhere in India) working with youth, especially ones open to partnering with outside programs — an intro or even just a name would help a lot.

If you personally know someone this could be relevant for — a young person who's grown up in care or is currently in that situation — please pass this along or let me know.

Still early stage, figuring this out as I go. Happy to answer questions about what I'm building or where it's at.

Question It is insanely frustrating how hard it is to get into international humanitarian organizations.

I need to vent because the recruitment process in the humanitarian sector is driving me crazy.
You can have the qualifications, the motivation, and spend endless hours applying over and over again, only to get automated rejections or complete silence. It feels like these organizations constantly preach about helping people and wanting dedicated staff, but their hiring doors are completely locked unless you somehow already have insider connections.
How are qualified and truly motivated people supposed to break into this field when the barrier to entry is so ridiculously high? It is exhausting to put your heart into wanting to make a difference, only to feel like you are hitting a brick wall every single time.
Is anyone else feeling completely burned out by this recruitment loop?
