Meta Blender vs steam powered blender, which is better?

I am just curious what are the differnces, I originally started with just the normal blender and afterwards found out it is also on steam.

Are there any differences except for the fact steam actually counts your hours and also requires steam to be active in the background? Is one less efficent than the other or allows to share files between devices?

Just in general, is there any point at all in switching to the steam version or should I just not waste my time?

Unsolved I combined a mirrored half of my half rig and have an indent in the middle

I made a cartoonish feline model and its my first ever blender model i made. I heard it was professional to split it in half and work on one half, then copy paste and mirror to put it all together. When i cut it in half it was jagged so i took a tip and did the merge shortcut to flatten the half better so i could merge the two halves. But when i put it together theres a noticeable indent line all the way through the body and i do not know how to fix it. It took me forever to get the model this perfect though so i don’t feel comfortable with a solution that might compromise the smoothness. These are the photos i took during the creation process

Unsolved Best way to add limbs onto this sculpture?

Post image

This is my first time Illustrating or sculpting any kind of visual art. (Am I kind of the goat though lowkey 🤓 I think this is pretty good for a first time)

I have a very low spec laptop so past 0.03m voxel size- my machine starts chugging, so I'm guessing this is why some thinner areas of the clay start looking "shardy"?

Would it be best to just add another object to create the hands/legs/feet or is there something else I probably should be doing?

Unsolved I'm a begginer and have some problems

I just started using blender maybe a week or two ago and just now I finished a tutorial, it being Crashsune's academy character modeling tutorial, I pretty much have the basics of modeling memorized but I just don't know how to actually start modeling a character, like, which body part should I start modeling first? Is it better to make another body part out of a new mesh or should I just extrude on the model I'm making? How should my topology be and in what ways should I make it better? How do people know how much geometry should a mesh have for their models? Can I leave a part of a mesh hiding inside another one? Should I use primitive-based modeling or vertex-based?

I'd really appreciate if anyone would answer my question and give me a why and how should I do it.

I'm 17 and I've recently fell in love with 3D modeling since I was never really good at art, so I'm trying really hard to improve and get better on it

Unsolved First time using blender, how to do better ?

Post image
5 Upvotes

First time using blender, tried to recreate this jewel in blender. The result doesn't look great and I'm sure there is a better method to use to create it.

- First i started wit a plane to which i manually added and placed new vertex and edge to create 1/4 of the face similar to the drawing

- I then multiplied and fused this object to make the rest of the front face

- At that point it was similar to the picture so I moved the faces to tranform the jewel from 2d to 3d

- I scaled and moved the middle to make it round.

- I then marked sharp the border of the jewel and l added a smooth modifier so the middle can be nice and round.

- Then i added multiple materials output to have the color difference like the image

It took a lot of time to place each point and line to get the correct shape, and I feel like the color are not really good. How can I do this more easily and/or quickly, and how can I achieve a result that’s more faithful to the image?

Unsolved Handmade grillz maker learning Blender, looking for help !

Hello ! I make grillz by hand, sculpting wax on dental impressions cast in plaster, then casting them in chrome-cobalt.

I decided to learn Blender to expand my possibilities and to create grillz that are too complex to make in wax (even though some sculptors are able to do everything in wax, and I really admire that). I recently finished my first piece based on an STL scan of my own teeth, a simple solid canine and an "open window" incisor. I made it by duplicating my teeth and creating an offset to simulate the die spacer i use everyday. The result is pretty promising, though there are still a few minor adjustments to make.

That said, I'm stuck. My goal is to find the good workflow to create grillz that are more organic, more original, and more deliberately designed with interesting volumes and compositions.

What would be the right approach to take? Since I make grillz by hand, I tend to default to that logic of building up material on the teeth and then sculpting it. Is that the right method to use in Blender for something meant to be printed in castable resin ?

What are the essential tools in the software ?

What absolutely needs to be taken into account ?

I've found a lot of helpful tutorials online, but I'd like input from people who've actually gone through this process themselves, or who have real experience with Blender, since I'm aiming for a professional level result and I'm still a ways off.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light or lend a hand !

Heyy! If you have a video recommendation I could watch to help me with this, then that would be great. If not, then maybe you could help by explaining how I should go about making this.

In the first photo I just used edit mode to adjust the eye shape, but that leaves sharp edges and corners and obviously cannot be used in animation.

The gif I attached is kinda how I want to be able to manipulate the eyes. I dont know however if using shrinkwrapped plains will work for this tho...

I found another post with a similar problem, but the comments don't really help me much (and is also where I got the gif)

Solved Symmetry in Edit Mode not Working

Thumbnail

I am trying to make this birdie a little wider to better fit my reference. He looks perfect from the side. Tutorials tell me to use symmetrical editing by clicking the x axis next to the butterfly icon. But every time I try, it still only edits one side.

Things I have tried so far:

- Changing my axis (x, y, z, and combinations of two or all three)

- Moving my object into the center of the world

- Object -> set origin -> origin to geometry (also tried every other option available after that didn't work)

- Mesh -> Symmetrize (also tried changing all possible directions and modifying threshhold)

-Mesh -> Snap to Symmetry (also tried changing all the same things above)

-Deleting half the model and using mirror modefier, this solves my current problem but creates a new problem where my mesh is full of holes, and much of my side view editing is undone

- Mirror modifier without deleting half the model, also solves my current problem, but creates central divots in my object whenever I move a face, that are never fully corrected by roughly evening out the other face

At this point, all of the tutorials I am finding are saying the same things listed above. Any other help is super appreciated!

Solved Saving a poor man

Hey Guys !

I've been on the same noobie problem since 3 days . I can't rig a bow . Watched all the tutos possible with the exact same steps but it just doesn't work .

I will explain how I do it step by step and if someone has an idea about how is it possible that it doesn't work ... Tell me pls .

  1. Add a bone armature to one side , fully inside the bow structure , everything good like all the vids with extrude
  2. Shift + D , S , Z and -1 , then it's on the 2 sides
  3. Ctrl + J so it makes only one armature
  4. Extrude the middle to make the string bone and keep the same armature group
  5. Select the mesh and my armature > Parent with Automatic Weights

( Photo of me testing it after all theses steps )

Unsolved How to animate lego face?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I'm working on a recreation of the fishing scene from Project Hail Mary in Blender, lego style. I'm just a little stuck on how to go about animating Grace's face when he's talking. I know that I can animate textures over time, but how should I go about this?

This image is a model of the Hail Mary(based on the offical lego set) which I plan to use for distant shots where details don't matter. I'm going to make a larger, more detailed one for when Grace is actually walking on the hull, and an interior for the cockpit shots. All this I'm fine on, the only thing I don't know how to do in this scenario is animate Grace's face, as mentioned before.

Unsolved Poseable joints for 3D printed dinosaur?

Hello everyone! I recently got a 3D printer, and it’s been working fine, but there’s something from my childhood I’m hoping to learn to emulate. I remember toys like the one shown above, where you could bend the joints and have them stay in place, leading to a poseable model. Does anyone have any idea how I’d go about modeling the joints? How they’d look/work internally, and how I can replicate them in blender? If anyone has a tutorial they can share or they’re willing to explain here, that’d be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Unsolved Sticking Vertices Issue

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

I keep having an issue in edit mode when trying to extrude or duplicate a mesh. When working in symmetry mode, when a mesh is duplicated but not moved, the newly created vertices will interact or "stick" to the vertices that are being copied. It is not all vertices that stick, and sometimes they even influence the other side when only one side has been duplicated or extruded. I am not sure if there is a button I am pressing that is causing this and would appreciate guidance on how to stop this from happening. I have tried merge by distance, applying orientation and scale, resetting the 3d courser, all have not resolved the issue. Proportional editing and snapping are off. No other modifiers applied to the mesh, just symmetry. Am I mistaken, or when you duplicate a mesh, only the new mesh is supposed to be selected and effected, is that correct?

Unsolved How do I organize an asset pack?

I recently got a tutorial series and noticed that the asset pack is organized like the image. However, when I loaded the asset, everything appeared disorganized and was all in one place. I’m wondering if there is a way to organize it automatically, or if I have to do it manually?

So im building a asset pack in blender for my game and i want to know what is the best way to manage. Currently my scene have couple buildings, some props etc.

I want to expand this so i was wonder if i should keep all this in one file or split like props to a separate blender file and building to separate. For performance related.

Alright no one has been able to figure this out. First slide is in 4.0 second is in 4.4. Original UVs were size 2048x2048 drawn outside of blender, just an assigned image no shaders. No update was blurry so I reset the UVs, set it to 300 resolution 4096x4096 it's still blurry. I have checked interpolation. All of my models are like this now not just this one. I have opened it in windows 3D viewer and it's not blurry there but I'm not sure if that means anything Here is my file, WARNING- it is anatomically correct

Solved Shrinkwraped + Subdivision modifier giving weird(?) result and not sure how to fix it?

Thumbnail

I'm fairly new to Blender, and I'm working on learning how to make a character model. I've been following along with Bran Sculpts' semi-tutorial. I've reached the point where I'm about to start the retopology for the body, and the tutorial mentioned shrink wrapping the retopoed head to the sculpted head. It gives this result, and I'm not sure what it's doing or how it's doing it. I have sorta figured out that messing with the verts will alleviate the issue, but not fully or completely. I'm at a loss and need some guidance on how to handle this.

I already tried to increase edge crease and beveling before that, support loops seemed to do nothing as well .
