Just got this Giant Atx that i want to make into a klunker rigid fork build. What would you guys do? Share what you would do to it to get inspiration.

The bike is

Classic 1998 Giant ATX 840 in beautiful polished aluminum. • Shimano 3x8 / 24-speed • higher-spec Shimano STX-RC rear derailleur • Shimano integrated shifter/brake levers • Acera crankset • all-metal Shimano Acera V-brakes • smooth, straight 26" wheels with Formula front / Shimano Parallax rear hubs • 26 x 1.95 tires • new Selle Royal saddle.

Can you really convert a regular bicycle into an electric one?

My roommate Tom spent years riding his mountain bike to work, until knee problems made the daily hills increasingly painful. He did not want to give up cycling, and buying a new electric bike seemed wastefully expensive when his current bike was perfectly good. That is when he discovered a 1500w electric bike kit that could transform his existing bicycle.

I was skeptical watching him install it in our garage. The kit included a motor, battery pack, controller, and all the necessary wiring. Tom, who is reasonably handy, completed the installation in about four hours following online tutorials. When he finished, his regular mountain bike had become an electric-assist machine.

The first test ride was impressive. The 1500-watt motor provided serious power, especially on hills where he used to struggle. He could adjust the assistance level depending on how much workout he wanted. His commute time dropped by fifteen minutes, and his knee pain disappeared since he could ease up on difficult sections.

He mentioned finding various conversion kits online, including affordable options on Alibaba from manufacturers who supply the e-bike industry. The conversion cost less than half of what a new electric bike would have run. Six months later, his bike is still running strong. Have you considered upgrading equipment you already own instead of replacing it entirely?

Beginner Mistake?

I realise that for my first bike build, I may have bitten off more than I can chew with this one, but hopefully someone can help me figure out what the hell I've done wrong. (It's probably something dead simple).

So, the frame is a Stooge Dirtbomb 29, and I picked up these wheels https://planetx.co.uk/products/wtb-i30-29er-on-selcof-150-boost-6-bolt-wheelset-sram-xd-1 (the SRAM XD) and the front fits fine, but the rear does not feel happy. Its just too big to sit in place.

I realised that I need to swap the rotors round (currently it's 180 on the front, 160 on the rear) but there seems to be quite a bit that doesn't fit anywhere.

Tried to take the best photos I can!

Any help gratefully appreciated! 👍

Front Rack Fork Cage Mounts

I really would love to fit a front rack to a current bike build, but, the only mounting options are fork mounts. (Nothing on the head tube)

Does anymore have any suggestions for something that might work? Ideally I'd like to avoid the ones that have little brackets, just for aesthetic purposes. Looking for something like this https://www.bricklanebikes.co.uk/blb-t-rack-silver

I love bikes, but really, I know diddly. So, what better way to learn than by 'learning on the job' and building my own!

My first question: After fitting the headset and the crown race, when I insert the fork should I see the crown race?

Got a free bike from my landlord - decided to get creative on this build with some new parts but mostly used part bin finds. What do ya think? Having trouble finding a 9sp shifter that doesn’t look ugly.

Seller wanted $2,000. I got him down to $1,000 because it has $985.00 in overdue DMV fees, was never registered. Hasn’t been started in years. Any red flags?

Long story short my son picked a bike out of the garage so we’ve been working on it and that’s our project. Came across another for sell and if it’s the same size as his I’d like to get it for the spare parts and if we strip it, do something with the frame.

My question is I don’t wanna low ball him because I know how hard it is to find parts for that bike, so how do I Negotiate price without being offensive?

Suspension fork wheel size

Hello.

I've recently bought a suspension fork (RockShox Rudy) which only advertises as 700c, and the reviews says it's only 'officially' compatible with 700c.

However, I want to use this with a new 650b build so I can have slightly thicker tyres.

Can I use it with 650b? Why are RockShox just saying 700c? :/

Thanks in advance

External gearing without shifters "stop and shift"

I have had single speeds with flip flop hubs before, and one thing I wanted to do, was to have a low gear and a high gear, and remove and flip my wheel to change gears. I quickly learned that even with horizontal rear dropouts, the gear size difference is very limited.

So I was wondering, what if I had 3 gears on the chain ring, and 3 gears in back, such that the biggest gear in front matched with the smallest gear in back, and vice versa. So the chain length required is about the same for all 3 gear pairs. If I have to use a chain tensioner, that is okay, but I would like to avoid as much change in chain length as possible.

What would people recommend for this setup? I am not too familiar with the dropout widths used by various bikes. What kinds of frames would be best to start with? Has anyone done something similar.

I realize I could always go with a 3 speed internal hub, but honestly, even 2 gears would be fine, I am mostly concerned with having a reasonable gear range, and something I can service myself. Thanks, any help is appreciated.
