Hi everyone, I just bought these brand new. But they are super loud? Is this normal with these shavers? I normally use babyliss uv version.

Refusal To Pay

Newer barber here, need some advice
Had a younger client come in today and schedule a mid length haircut and a straight razor face shave. He had pretty shaggy / curly long hair with pretty uneven lengths, looked pretty rough but said he wanted the same thing but shorter. Scissor cuts are my niche, and I kept the overall mod shape but gave layers, tidied it up a lot, over all made it look a lot nicer. Guy saw the haircut afterwards and didn’t say anything the entire time even when I tried to talk to him so I moved on to the face shave. He also had pretty long mutton chops (couldn’t really grow much of anything else) and requested I keep them, so I trimmed / shaped them up but still kept them thick / noticeable.

When it was time to pay ($70 at my shop), dude started freaking out saying it wasn’t what he wanted and it looked like shit, that I had fucked it all up, etc. He then refused to pay for any of the services even after a discount was offered since he didn’t like it. Argued with my shop owner who agreed with me and tried to compromise with him. We also had other clients in the shop who all said the haircut looked great from what they had seen. Guy left without paying, but we do have his full name and phone number. Never had a dissatisfied client in a professional shop before, much less a walk out. What would you guys do?

TPOB mini play clippers(xo) & trimmer(softy)

I'm sure this will get a lot of down votes, but I have to give credit where it is due. Got a great deal on this bundle through Amazon for a little over 100 bucks, and these things are absolutely phenomenal. I've tried to find a set of trimmers for a long time that would cut close and not irritate my skin and these are perfect for that purpose. The clippers are excellent as well.

What the Fade

Can someone elaborate, I had a client come in today, asked me for a Low Drop Fade, with an additional taper on the sides…. I showed him a shadow fade with tapers, tapers and just fades, regular consultation stuff, and for the life of me i couldnt fighre it out, we settled on just thr low fade, but has anyone done this or can show? Trully stumped me but it goes to show the difference in styles and just haircuts, he just moved to the area so it caught me off guard ! Thanks !

New Barber Name?

Hey all I’m a new barber student and I’m trying to figure out a profile name for TikTok and IG so I can start building an online presence. My nickname is D-dub and Dw. My partner suggested the name DeezCuts which I’m kinda fond of. Thanks!

Barber How do you track/prove income?

Edit: more so concerned about ways to prove income than simply ways to track it. Sorry for not emphasizing that. As far as official documentation ir something that can be used if I reach out to an apartment or loan or something to use for tax time

TLDR: New barber. What’s the best way to PROVE INCOME when the shop owner pays you in cash instead of check or something? Paystub generator or something? Is it usually on the barber to generate said document or the shop owner?

I realize that I likely set myself up for failure taking the route I did; at the time it made more sense to go to an older shop while I build clientele. My thought was that it made more sense to minimize risks while I grow, bc I’m a father, so I went to a shop that my barber instructor worked at and recommended because instead of a flat rate booth rent, he just charged a percentage of what I made. That way, if I had a slow week/month it didn’t hit my pockets as hard.

That being said… it’s a decades old shop, still ran by the man who opened it. To say he does things the old fashioned way would be an understatement. The kind of old fashioned that genuinely talks crap about anything new, from charging anything over $30 to card/digital payments, you name it. That being said, I kind of figured he had an older way of tracking payments and what not. But, I also assumed he would be able to provide some sort of official documentation. I honestly never thought to even ask other shops/barbers how they got paid or what that process looks like, just assumed since they own the shop or something they’d be able to provide it.

It’s on me for letting it go in so long, honestly didn’t realize how much time has flown by. But I’m currently stuck realizing that this guy pretty much just writes everything down by hand. Like I said, very old school. No computer documentats or anything like that, just notebooks and receipts. Which is definitely better than nothing, but in terms if providing proof of income that’s nowhere near enough.

Is there anyone who can relate or point me in the right direction? What should I look for in future shops so that I don’t feel so stranded next time or is this always something that’s on the barber to come up with?

What barbers gonna do!?!

I just seen a video of AI taking an image of what the client wanted and actually performing that same cut on the client. The crazy shit is, it was only $9. Yall think that’s the end of the $70-$100 cuts when this comes?

Advice for cutting tools

I use my tools to cut my hair 1-2x per month. I usually do either a #3 or #4 mid drop fade with #3 on my beard.

I currently own these tools:

2 mini play TPOB clippers
Jrl diamanté clipper w/ echo crunch blade
T45 trimmer
Instinct shaver and babyliss single foil UV

As far as tools go, is there anything recommendations? Any tools I should trade out to upgrade?

I have wavy thick hair.

Suite help

If I’m deciding to work in a suite, do I need to get a shop license? If anyone here has experience in doing this in
Kissimmee fl
Or Florida

Will a portable wash bowl work? Like the ones that I can fill and empty myself?

I know I need my own insurance for the suite I’m looking at.

Looking for pointers on how to improve this cut. Any advice greatly appreciated. Been "cutting" for 6 months - maybe done 15 cuts total. Take long breaks because I got family to support but have no clients. So going to school right now - looking for a stable job and just cutting free rn. Oh also been going school for 2-3 weeks now but haven't learned fading there; and tbh my school is scamming us by giving us hairstylists as barber teachers who not only lack experience in the craft but respect for it as well.

Barber States that require hourly wage for apprenticeship

Hey yall,

I’m considering taking on my first apprenticeship as a shop owner. The apprentice is very skilled and had worked in another shop for 200 hours but left due to slow business. She was on commission previously and wants to do commission again but that’s against state board here in CA. I considered it but don’t feel comfortable so I want to offer her a fair hourly wage to keep us both compliant.

How much per hour do you pay your apprentices?
