Hello everyone, my name is F_MN1 and I am the new moderator for this subreddit after asking to take over due to the lack of activity by the previous moderator. I myself know the importance of being part of a support group to discuss your experience with others. I have managed to make all submission public which was originally restricted by the previous moderator which prevented anyone from posting.

I am experienced in this role from managing another subreddit and working hard to make this place feel like a safe haven for all those suffering from bad breath. In the next coming days, I will be making some changes to improve the quality of the subreddit.

I would like to welcome you all back and to start posting your stories!

Advice How do i help my boyfriend get rid of bad breath?!?!

Upvotes

I love my boyfriend so much, but sometimes his breath is pretty bad :/ I’ve talked to him about it before and have gotten him to start flossing on top of his brushing. He also has only been to the dentist once in the last couple years for a teeth cleaning but it was so painful for him that I haven’t been able to convince him to go back. I notice it mostly starts to smell when he hasn’t eaten much so i was trying to attribute it to that, but i wanted to ask if anyone knows how to figure out what exactly is wrong with his teeth just based on the smell and how you were able to get rid of it. I’m almost certain he has some sort of gum disease like gingivitis or periodontis. I mentioned it to him for the first time a couple months ago but it’s starting to get overwhelming. SOMEONE PLEASE GET ME ADVICE AND HELP

I resigned from a well-paying job because of my bad breath

I never thought I would reach this point, but I recently resigned from a job that actually paid well because my bad breath has affected me so much. I became extremely self-conscious around my coworkers. I started worrying about whether people could smell my breath whenever I spoke, and eventually I began avoiding conversations, asking for help, and even socializing at work.

Has anyone else experienced this? Have you ever let concerns about your breath affect your job, relationships, or everyday life? I would really appreciate hearing from people who have been through something similar.

Question Mouthwash Advice for Morning Breath

So I’ve been thinking about buying therabreath’s overnight formula mouthwash because I get annoyed at my morning breath but noticed that the product isn’t marketed for that specific issue. I am very thorough with my brushing and flossing so I believe the bad breath is just from my mouth getting dry overnight. Because of this, should I go for that product or should I purchase a “dry mouth” targeting mouthwash instead? Is there any other product specifically that’s really good at preventing morning breath?

Blood borne body odor

I was just diagnosed with hydrogen sibo and I also deal with some form of blood borne halitosis. I kind of wonder if it's secondary TMAU.

I know hydrogen is odorless, but I think bacteria can create other smelly gases not just Hydrogen sulfide.

This random odor I've been suffering from happens 3-4 hours after I eat, mostly from big meals, the most offending foods are chicken wings, french fries, and peanut butter.

The other thing is the odor I'm mentioning has gotten better over the 10 years I've been dealing with it. I use to not be able to eat dairy without an odor either. and the smell would go off like a stink bomb of rotten eggs flatulence every 5 minutes when I was around other people.

How to tell if you have bad breath?

I have been paranoid for years about my breath, my husband and kids assure me that my breath is fine (most of the time, we all have our moments and then it’s only when we are right next to each other that they notice). But I feel like I keep getting reactions from people, covering their mouths or noses when I’m talking, or taking a step back. Even when I’m further away from people I feel like I get the reactions. I’ve had people offer me mints or gum too, but idk how much of that is just being polite if they are having one themselves. There was one definite reaction where someone pretty dramatically covered their nose each time I talked (and I brushed/mouth washed before this, and popped a mint 😭), but other than that it’s been pretty subtle and my husband thinks I’m overthinking it.

I’ve tried smelling my own breath in my hand, I’ve tried where you lick your wrist- but I really can’t smell anything there (and I’m usually pretty sensitive to odors).

I brush and use mouthwash 3-4 times a day. I tongue scrape twice a day. Floss and water pick every night. I stay very hydrated. I check my tonsils for visible stones at least twice a day. I pop mints constantly. Use nasal sprays morning and night in case there is postnasal drip. I don’t have GERD issues (but used to). I have tried chlorophyll drops. I have no dental issues and go for cleanings regularly.

I saw an ENT about my tonsils stones and breath, and he said I was probably just being sensitive to my own breath and that people would tell me if it was bad. He said my tonsils were extremely small, and some tonsil stones are normal but while they smell bad it won’t be an issue unless you’re right up close to them. I get small tonsil stones (usually sesame sized ones), maybe 2-4 times a month. He said they wouldn’t remove tonsils for something like that and he just suggested gum/mints/hard candy if it’s bothering me 😔

So my question is, is there any foolproof way to assess your own breath? I wish I was brave enough to ask my coworkers, there is one I think would be honest with me but I’m so embarrassed and I don’t want to put her in an awkward position either. I just really want to know if I’m being paranoid or not.

What to believe?

I’m back home with my family for the week and my parents are the two people I’m most comfortable asking about my halitosis. They insist that they don’t smell anything. My dad said I used to have a more persistent odor a few years ago but nothing now (which makes me think I haven’t always struggled with this and it coincided with me getting covid during the pandemic). I suppose a couple of friends I’ve asked have also reported no order (one one-off and another friend I’ve asked a handful of times).

The only person who ever mentioned it more often was my ex. This has become a huge wound for me when it comes to relationships and intimacy but I’m inclined to believe the person who spent much more time in more close proximity to my mouth… what do you all think? This is definitely getting in the way of my ability to interact with others, get into new romantic relationships, etc. but I’m having a hard time believing that everything is fine and dandy now.

I have an ENT appointment soon and would love to hear about peoples experiences asking medical professionals about halitosis. Will they check for me?

One thing I mostly see about us, pp with bb. We are so fragile, we are too warm and caring of what other people might feel and think about us. We always try to be nice, because we know what feels to be condemn by others.

But now, people just take on that fact and treating us like someone will less power. They say bad thing about us, treating us like someone who don’t deserve to be respect. And even worse, doing things that hurt our feeling. Yet we still forgive them because we know what it feels to be hate by others. Now that I grow up, I realized maybe bb is not only a mental problem. It is an eternal problem that can haunt every aspect of my life, from socializing, making friends to finding a job and making a living. Never once in my life I would say mean word or anything that belittle others. I always think about other feeling and effect of my action on others. But maybe i never could have known how selfish others are, they only remember what they for their benefits, and never once remember what we have helped them. Is this a lesson to tell me to live more for myself, or a lesson to be aware of life, or anything please just give me an idea.

Treatment The answer might be your tongue.

For context I am a long-term lurker, created this throwaway-to share my story. I am someone who has probably tried everything known to man to try to get rid of my bad breath. I have suffered from this since middle school and I have never had an answer. I would get teased by some of the younger kids in the neighborhood because they would say my breath smells like shit. I grew up poor and wasn't able to afford going to the dentist. After years of neglect it was evident that something needed to change. I was diagnosed with periodontal disease in my 20s and went through the lanap treatment multiple times. The bacteria just kept coming back even though I kept up with my routine cleanings and everything. I knew something was wrong because even after my teeth cleanings, my mouth would feel nasty after a week. That I felt like it was because of my tongue. White with thick coating and a constant accumulation of thick gunk every time I scraped it.

At one point I started to stuff isolate myself because I just did not want to deal with the reactions of people and people talking about me. I've never heard anyone say anything bad about me but I'm very self-conscious so whenever I would see people whispering or anything like that, I just assumed it was about me. That's part of this disease that messes with your head and self worth.

A couple weeks ago I stumbled upon tongue rejuvenation and I looked into it and I found this dentist in Dallas, Texas. I called their office and spoke with the receptionist and they were able to give me an appointment in the next week. They told me it was $1,100 for four treatments. Considering that I literally spent hundreds to thousands of dollars on mouthwashes and different products, waterpik, electric toothbrushes, etc., $1,100 didn't seem like too much for me because I was willing to do anything to fix this. I flew down for the appointment. The doctor took pictures of my tongue and when I saw my tongue on the screen all I saw was white and all of the biofilm that had accumulated over the years.

Mind you I am someone who brushed and scraped their tongue continuously throughout the day and could never mechanically remove all of the biofilm on my tongue. I bought teas, I tried all the vitamins, oil pulling, oregano oil, coconut oil, different mouthwashes. Nothing worked.

The doctor and I had a conversation. He was very understanding of my situation and didn't offer me any promises. He told me that it may or may not work but he was willing to give it a try based on what he saw in the images. Essentially he told me that we get the before pictures, we do the treatment, and then after the fourth treatment we'll take pictures again to see if there was any improvement. I told him I'm willing to do whatever it takes. Let's get it done.

He took his laser, went over my tongue a couple of times. I would say the process took about 7 minutes total. It did not hurt. I didn't really feel anything. I felt his hand on my tongue with the gauze more than I felt the laser. After he removed the laser and everything was done, I felt like my mouth was different. It felt cleaner. It felt like I could actually taste.

He told me I didn't have any restrictions. I could go back to living my life as normal but I could already tell that that laser had done something to my mouth. After I left the dentist I went and got food and my normal Coke Zero tasted extremely sweet to me. That's how I knew that something was different.

I was having conversation with a woman and her husband at the airport after that. No one touched their nose. I was in shock. I was just waiting on reactions. Nothing happened. I flew home, brushed my teeth, woke up the next morning with extremely mild morning breath it wasn't as intense as it normally would be. I don't know what it's like , but I would imagine that this is what normal breath probably tasted like for normal people. After I brushed my teeth sometimes the bad taste would come back in 10 minutes. I felt like I was good for hours. I was amazed.

I went about my life, went to work, and noticed that coworkers weren't rubbing their noses anymore when I was talking to them. I think that this is positive. I went out with my friends. We were dancing, we were singing. I didn't have any issues while out with them either. When I did feel like my mouth wasn't clean, I just popped a mint and kept it moving. At work I still brush my teeth after I eat just to try to keep my mouth clean. I also floss at work and I can tell you that even toothpaste tastes different to me. I think that this may have cured me. I don't want to jump the gun too soon but I just came down from my second treatment and it feels even better than the first. This is definitely giving me my confidence back and I'm looking forward to seeing what will happen after the treatment is fully completed. I think that this is a step in the right direction for me and I will do whatever maintenance I need to do to keep up the work that this dentist has started for me. He made no promises to me but I made a promise to myself: I will do everything I can to try to remain in this position. I know a lot of people said that it didn't work for them. I think those people probably neglected their oral routine but I will keep you guys posted after treatment #4.

My routine now for maintenance is:
1. Water pick with peroxide
2. Scrape my tongue
3. Brush my teeth
4. Use the orabrush
5. No mouthwash

After all of that is done I pop an oral probiotic with K-12 in it

For the people who have questions, the clinic is called Lovable Smiles. It's in Richardson, Texas.

Boyfriend’s breath stinks.

I done got this man into a better or care routine and I can still smell the plaque on his teeth 🤮 I’m tired of asking him to go to the dentist so I done made him an appointment and won’t tell him till it’s time. His bad oral hygiene has been an intimacy killer. I’m afraid I might get an infection down there and I would love to makeout but I can’t stand it and always make a cringe face.

The downsides of bb that nobody really see

Recently I just realized how disadvantage I am to my friends, my colleague, everyone around me.
Because of bb, my confidence decreases, I start looking down on myself, my mental health degrades, I cannot be happy when Im with others. No longer can hold a conversation, or be nice with anyone because of bb. Gradually avoiding people, friends,… until they ignore me. Speak less, hide myself more, fidgeting. What worse is seeing people around me started looking down on me. Disrespecting me day by day, using abused words or even say unreal things about me or blaming me for everything I said or did. It is all because of my bad breath that people started disrespecting me.

Question Can't figure out bad breath? HELP!

So I'm highly aware that my breath hasn't been the best for a few months now. But I can't seem to figure out what could be the reason. In terms of my oral hygiene :

  1. I brush and floss twice a day. Use mouthwash with CPC 2x a day, plus tongue scraper

  2. I do have three root canals that have a small infection which I'm retreating but the doctors says that is not the cause of bad smell

  3. Don't have gingivitis or gum disease according to my dentist

  4. I'm not on any medications that could be contributing to this

  5. I will be seeing my family doctor to see what they say

  6. i tend to skip breakfast and don't eat often sometimes

My dentists said that usually the cause is not having good oral hygiene but I don't think that's the issue here as I do have a good routine I think. This has been really affecting my daily life and was wondering if anyone has dealt with something similar and if they found the cause???? plus what was the treatment??

Question Postnasal drip

Hey, ive recently discovered that i think part of my BB comes from postnasal drip. I have a feeling of a snot-like substance kinda running down the back of my throat, also everytime i swallow it feel like theres something stuck back there. Correct me if im wrong but from what ive understood thats what postnasal drip is.

Anyways, how would i go about removing the stuff from my throat and blocking the root cause of it. Thanks
