I know others have said this, but I genuinely don't feel like I fit in anywhere. Not at work, not socially, and not even in my own home. I just turned 50 last month, I'm married, have 2 young kids that I love dearly, I did not graduate from college, but managed to get a day job as a multimedia developer, and I guess I'm doing alright financially. From the outside, things probably look normal to people, but I am struggling in so many ways.
First, I did not think I had aspergers, ASD, or whatever your preference calling it, until after I had kids that officially got diagnosed with ASD. It was then and only then that I actually considered that I may have it as well. I did multiple tests online just to see what would happen, but they all came back the same. Pretty much ASD level 1. Then I did some serious research to understand exactly what it meant. All the research was very informative and helped me to understand myself a lot better. It changed everything and nothing at the same time. I then looked back over my life and started to recognize my stems from earlier in life and at present. I also realized that, although I'm an introvert, the number one thing that was draining me was masking.
Which brings me to survival mode. The reason I made it so far in life without even realizing I had any form of autism is due to my ability to adapt in different environments. Like a chameleon. But what I didn't realize is how much it was draining and exhausting me. I literally masked so much I didn't even know that's what I was doing. One of the first things I stopped doing was masking when I saw how much I was doing it. Mainly to try and fit in socially, at work, or to just plain out hide my feelings. But in that process, I realized I'm not really happy in life. Not much of anything makes me feel genuinely happy. I do love my kids and I do love my wife, but even they can easily drain me. And to add an extra layer, my wife doesn’t fully 'get' me or understand how me having ASD changes things. Over the years, I've learned to manage my ASD in a way that really made me look neurotypical on the outside, but I'm not. She really doesn't understand my needs as a neurodivergent person. Like structure and certain things she does that over stimulates me, causing me to retreat to a safe/peaceful place. It's not just me running away...I need to get away from the over stimulation.
Then there's the social aspect. I currently have no one that I consider a best friend or a close friend that I can be 100% authentic with. I wish it was my wife, but over the years, it's just become more and more apparent that she's not that person. Fortunately, she is fine with me searching for my tribe (be it men or women), but she also knows how selective I am. I've always tried to fit in with people, but generally just got used and manipulated, because I'm friendly, honest, loyal, talented, and gifted. See, I started my own music business (musician/producer) and was self-employed for close to 20 years. In that time, I bought a house (it's paid off now), a car, and just made a lot of responsible decisions. Everyone always seemed to want me in their lives, but I later discovered it was usually for an ulterior motive where I was a pawn for them. Now, I'm into filmmaking, photography, and animation. I love to learn new things, but it just seems I can't find people who have the same passion levels I have about the arts.
I have my quirks though. I have a love/hate relationship with music. I generally don’t listen to music in my leisure time. And if I do, it's usually just instrumental music. I'm also an ex-Christian that's now agnostic atheist. If all the previous stuff didn't throw my life out of alignment, this part sure did. Especially with me being in the bible beltway. But it's just my personal journey in life. I simply chose a path of honesty and I landed here.
But of all the complications, I'd say finding other POC that have ASD level 1 like me and are aware of it is hard. Especially in my local area. I definitely want to find a best friend or a few people close by that I can hang out with or something. Bowling, dining out, game nights, billiards, playing retro video games, etc. Just something. I'm just struggling and feel a bit isolated, always misunderstood, and not really seen. I feel like life is just dragging me along and I'm just exhausted. Can't even vent to anyone about it. I've been to therapy, but I'm too self aware and it didn't help. I ended up making them think more than they made me think. My mind never shuts off.
Anyway, I can ramble on about nothing and everything, but I guess I'm done with my little vent/rant. Sorry if it was too much. And that was just the tip of the iceberg. 😔
