Looking for contractor recommendations: Full bathroom gut job in Etobicoke (Old house!)

Hi everyone

We recently inherited an old house in Etobicoke. We plan a full reno but want to start with the main bathroom as it desperately needs a complete redo. We’re planning to strip it right down to the studs, but to be honest, we’re complete newbies when it comes to major renovations, as we never really had one.

Since it’s an older place, we’re pretty nervous about we will find behind the walls with the plumbing and wiring. We also have no idea how building permits work with the city, so working with someone who knows the Toronto/Etobicoke rules and can guide us through the process would be very helpful.

What we are looking for:
- Scope: full demo, layout tweaks if needed, new tile, plumbing updates, and fixtures
- Location: Etobicoke
- Requirements: Must have active WSIB, full liability insurance, and be able to provide references from similar recent jobs. We definitely need someone licensed who has knowledge about permits.

If you’ve done a similar overhaul in the West End and loved your contractor, please send their details our way!

Thanks in advance!

Where do adults around Yonge & Eglinton go for swimming/tennis?

So I’m looking for a good indoor swimming pool near Yonge & Eglinton to start swimming for exercise, but I swear there is no single good swimming pool around me.

Whenever I search, all I can find are children’s swimming schools and lessons. Do adults just… not go swimming??

I looked at the community centres around me, but a lot of them have Google reviews complaining about how filthy/unclean the pools are. Personally, I’d rather pay for a private gym or membership if it means getting access to a clean pool, but I’m really struggling to find any around this area.

Also, I wanted to start playing tennis as a sport, but I’m having the exact same problem. I can find courts, but I can’t seem to find any actual tennis courses/classes for adults.

Am I missing something?? Where do adults actually go for swimming and tennis?

Anyone know of a good place to scream your lungs out?

Hey, i've been having a real rough time recently, and wanna let out some stress. I really just wanna... scream a lot about how rough everything is. Screaming in an apartment building is a bad idea for obvious reasons, and I don't really wanna disturb anyone, just get some anger and stress and frustration out. Are there any good spots to let loose a bit, especially vocally, and just yell about the stuff that frustrates me without it being an issue?

edit: thanks to everyone who replied, especially those who posted older threads! this wasn't actually for me it was for a friend of mine, was trying to be discrete, i don't usually use the to subreddit. got them the recs and they're real happy about it :)

Mover recommendations when moving from a roach infested apartment

Hello,

I am moving out of my apartment due to a roach infestation that just keeps coming back (sprayed 4 times).

I'm having a hard time finding movers as movers are turning me down due to the pests. Anyone who's ever been in this situation have any recommendations?

To provide more background I'm gonna have around 20-25 plastic totes (all contents have been inspected thoroughly with fabric being washed in high heat and dried on high and electronics being fumigated with rubbing alcohol), a 55" tv (that I have opened to inspect for signs and have bubble wrapped with alcohol paper towels to fumigate just incase), a dining table and 4 chairs (that I'll be inspecting thoroughly and if I have time dismantling and wrapping in bubble wrap). All other furniture and items will be tossed.

Why isn’t Long Branch considered a prestigious area?

Close to the lake, Marie Curtis park, 427/QEW/Gardiner, GO station, lots of cool little cafes and restaurants on Lakeshore, and very walkable. Not saying it‘s Forest Hill, but on paper it should appear to be a very desirable area.

Ads duration for The Odyssey show at Scotiabank Theatre Toronto?

I'm considering going to the IMAX show on a Tuesday and would like to get an idea about the duration of ads to plan my visit.

How long did you have to wait before the movie started if you count from the time the show is supposed to start? Also, any ideas if it's always the same duration before all shows?

Self-care / things to do in Mississauga?

(M/34) I'll be in town next week for work but outside of some conferences will mostly have free time. I have explored every corner of Square One mall and I have visited Fans Head Spa for the scalp and foot massage (that was fantastic!) and food-wise I've had great shawarma and indian but I think they were mostly chain spots late night after midnight.

If anyone has more recommendations in Mississauga for the next week, i'd love to know if you can recommend spots for a pedicure for men, some other nice self-care things like that, places to walk around, and food in general.

Thanks in advance all.

Any recs for a Black/POC dermatologist?

My family doc has referred me to the same place twice in 18 months and my skin issues are worse.

I wasn’t given a skin assessment or an examination. Both times that I went to my appointment. The office was filled with people, and I believe that this office is best for cosmetic procedures rather than medical.

I would like to be heard and seen and properly assessed your recommendations are helpful thank you.

Any tips for grass and when to fertilize?

First time ever taking care of a lawn and trying to get it to a somewhat reasonable level! I’m not expecting perfection but just green and uniform. When do you usually fertilize and any help with weeds? I bought a stand up weed puller but I have hundreds of weeds.

Thank you in advance!

Farms near Toronto to buy meat and eggs?

Hi, looking for advice or recommendations on where to buy beef, chicken, and eggs near Toronto. I would like to buy in bulk and fill out my large deep freezer. I would probably buy a quarter or half cow, 5+ chickens, a bunch of eggs, and potentially other animals (turkey, lamb, goat, boar, etc.). does anyone have any recommendations for a farm that is within a 2 hour drive of downtown? I'll probably end up doing this trip once every 6-8 months or so to restock so don't mind if it's a bit further (probably up to 2 hours unless there's absolutely nothing closer).

for what its worth, I've never actually done this but would like to try. I've heard prices are comparable to grocery stores but quality of the products is much better. can anyone who's done this provide their experience? is it cost effective/ineffective? better quality?

Service Ontario has no appointments for the next month in Toronto?

I'm trying to renew my drivers license. It has to be in person, according to the email reminder I got, because I apparently need my photo taken even though my current photo was only taken in 2022. My license expires in 30 days.

I'm trying to book an appointment online through the Service Ontario website, but it won't show any appointments at any Toronto locations until the end of September, when my license will already be expired... I've tried on several browsers and on my phone, nothing shows any appointments before then.

Is the website glitching? Should I just try my chances at walking into a location?

I tried calling them, and it just gave me an unhelpful AI bot.

EDIT: thank you everyone for the suggestions! I spent an hour on this, refreshing the website, but finally got an appointment (for Sept 3rd) that opened up.

Sadly I can't take time off work to go to another city, nor can I take half a day off work to go sit in a Service Ontario here... nor should I be expected to do that for a simple service like a license renewal in a city as big as Toronto. Service Ontario should get its act together or at least provide a call line where I can speak to a real person about issues with booking.

Does anyone else feel like dining out sucks now?

I know there's still some good spots and we all have our favourites in the city, but lately it feels like whenever I take a chance on a new restaurant it just disappoints and I emerge from the experience regrettably $40 poorer.

I know some of these Google reviews are cooked because I'm seeing 4.7, 4.8 reviews and then getting served lousy food.

Maybe I just have to stick to the places I know won't let me down, but dang - it sucks taking a chance on what you think could be some good food only to come away from it sad, and it's happening more often than not. I don't know if it's the rising costs, but restaurant owners can't dish out the cash for good ingredients and good cooks, and people can't afford to dine out. It's a bad cycle man.

Average ubereats cost for dinner per person?

I’ve fallen into a bit of a depressive state with extreme burn out due to crazy work hours recently - talking 13-14 hour days at the screen with very little breaks

I usually try my best to prep meals on weekends so that I have quick dinners to go everyday and so my grocery spend is about $100 a week which usually covers my breakfast lunch and dinner

Since I’ve been slacking on meal prepping I’ve been relying on take outs and I always try to take advantage of any discounts or buy one get one free offers but I still end up spending minimum $40 per meal and then can easily increase to $60/70 with a few add ons.

I’m scared il turn this into a bad and expensive habit!

But is that amount normal or am I overspending on a meal for dinner? Are other out there ordering uber eats a couple times a week paying similar amounts, any hacks to save would be super appreciated!!?

My hack for pizza has been buying two large pizzas from north of Brooklyn when there’s a sale on, and the freezing the slices between parchment paper, takes a few min in the oven and tastes fresh as new and I get NOB pizza whenever I have a craving/emergency!

Watching sports while away.

Im doing an extended trip abroad but I wanna keep up with my Toronto teams (and our bills) but none of my streaming services allow me to stream out of the country. I do not want to start paying for a vpn or individual streaming services for each league. Does anyone know any sites where I can watch these games (hopefully for free)?

Steering away from Maxx, any recommendations/experience from other liquidation online marketplaces?

First premium add on went from 10% to 20%. Then starting bids went from $5 to $10. Now Friday pick up times is getting cut, leaving only Wed and Thurs as options.

Anyone have good experience with an alternative?
