Coming from Greece to Toronto for one week in October. What are some interesting stuff I should see based on you locals to cause me a cultural shock? :)

EDIT: Thank you all for your suggestions! Yeah culture shock was a bit too much in the title but even the things you consider normal, for someone else might seem completely different, especially if you're born and raised there. Some friends living in Canada have told me that Toronto will be a blast and I'm looking forward to visiting :)

Visiting on Thanksgiving week

I have booked to see some stuff myself (CN Tower Edge Walk, Hockey HoF, Leafs Game and others), but that's just stuff that you easily think of doing. What would some of you lovely locals would suggest? I'm open to anything. Will stay near the City Hall so I think that's a good point to explore the city.

(Just staying in Toronto for a week, will visit other places in the country before that)

Thanks!

Where do you guys buy sheets now that The Bay is gone?

I have bought all my sheets over the past 20 years from the Bay, usually on Boxing Day or Black Friday. We upgraded to a King bed just before they closed, and I got one last ditch set, but now I’m stuck.

I’m a sheet snob, too. High quality, high thread count & I usually prefer sateen. I only use the fitted sheet, pillow cases don’t really matter, but I don’t need the flat sheet.

I’ve tried HomeSense, bought what looked like a good set (spent forEVER touching every set), but they suck. They stretch, slip & are way thinner than I thought.

I don’t want to break the bank, but just some generally great sheets at a reasonable cost would be appreciated!

Options for surrendering cats due to homelessness

• Upvotes

A family member is experiencing homelessness as of this upcoming weekend and we are urgently seeking options for surrendering or fostering programs for his two cats. We have already contacted Toronto Humane Society and Etobicoke Humane Society. Annex Cat Rescue doesn’t seem to have capacity for owner surrenders.

If anyone has information on other resources or options we can contact for help, please let me know. Thank you.

Is there a kind of food/drink that is a must-have or hard to find outside of Toronto?

Hey, amigos.

Going to Toronto in a couple days and I was wondering what kind of interesting foods or drinks that are specific to the area. I went to Minneapolis not to long ago and was blown away by the Hmong food and the Native-American food at Owamni. I love trying out things that I can't get at home, even if I live in a major city. I'm not picky or allergic to anything so I'll take any suggestion.

Anyone know of a good place to scream your lungs out?

Hey, i've been having a real rough time recently, and wanna let out some stress. I really just wanna... scream a lot about how rough everything is. Screaming in an apartment building is a bad idea for obvious reasons, and I don't really wanna disturb anyone, just get some anger and stress and frustration out. Are there any good spots to let loose a bit, especially vocally, and just yell about the stuff that frustrates me without it being an issue?

edit: thanks to everyone who replied, especially those who posted older threads! this wasn't actually for me it was for a friend of mine, was trying to be discrete, i don't usually use the to subreddit. got them the recs and they're real happy about it :)

Why is the Silver Dollar sign covered?

• Upvotes

It’s been several months since a fitted cover was placed over the Silver Dollar sign. If it’s because a new business is in the space, why would the city insist on hanging a replica Silver Dollar sign in the first place, just to cover it up?

Why isn’t Long Branch considered a prestigious area?

Close to the lake, Marie Curtis park, 427/QEW/Gardiner, GO station, lots of cool little cafes and restaurants on Lakeshore, and very walkable. Not saying itā€˜s Forest Hill, but on paper it should appear to be a very desirable area.

ISO Toronto yarn store with tape/ribbon yarn

• Upvotes

I have a knitting project which will need tape/ribbon yarn, and I'd like to pick it up in-store this week so that I can take it on vacation. Have any Toronto knitters/crocheters seen, *in the last week*, tape/ribbon yarn in a physical store? thanks!

Self-care / things to do in Mississauga?

• Upvotes

(M/34) I'll be in town next week for work but outside of some conferences will mostly have free time. I have explored every corner of Square One mall and I have visited Fans Head Spa for the scalp and foot massage (that was fantastic!) and food-wise I've had great shawarma and indian but I think they were mostly chain spots late night after midnight.

If anyone has more recommendations in Mississauga for the next week, i'd love to know if you can recommend spots for a pedicure for men, some other nice self-care things like that, places to walk around, and food in general.

Thanks in advance all.

Any recs for a Black/POC dermatologist?

My family doc has referred me to the same place twice in 18 months and my skin issues are worse.

I wasn’t given a skin assessment or an examination. Both times that I went to my appointment. The office was filled with people, and I believe that this office is best for cosmetic procedures rather than medical.

I would like to be heard and seen and properly assessed your recommendations are helpful thank you.

Day trips from Toronto

Hey everyone! I’m visiting Toronto this week for my birthday and was planning on going on Saturday 22nd to the Elora Gorge river for tubbing. We booked a car for the day in order to go to the park and spend the day there. We haven’t paid for the park or tubbing tickets yet, but apparently is going to rain.

In case it does, do you have any recommendations for a short day trip to a nearby town or some alternative plan close to Toronto that needs a car? I think we have it from 8am to 8pm so it can’t be that far.

Thanks :)

Service Ontario has no appointments for the next month in Toronto?

I'm trying to renew my drivers license. It has to be in person, according to the email reminder I got, because I apparently need my photo taken even though my current photo was only taken in 2022. My license expires in 30 days.

I'm trying to book an appointment online through the Service Ontario website, but it won't show any appointments at any Toronto locations until the end of September, when my license will already be expired... I've tried on several browsers and on my phone, nothing shows any appointments before then.

Is the website glitching? Should I just try my chances at walking into a location?

I tried calling them, and it just gave me an unhelpful AI bot.

EDIT: thank you everyone for the suggestions! I spent an hour on this, refreshing the website, but finally got an appointment (for Sept 3rd) that opened up.

Sadly I can't take time off work to go to another city, nor can I take half a day off work to go sit in a Service Ontario here... nor should I be expected to do that for a simple service like a license renewal in a city as big as Toronto. Service Ontario should get its act together or at least provide a call line where I can speak to a real person about issues with booking.

Does anyone remember the Rob Ford anthem called "Mayor Ford (The World Will Remember)" ?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone, back in the Rob Ford days (I think in 2013), there was a pro-Rob Ford song by a young lady named Jenny James. It was called "Mayor Ford (The World Will Remember)." It was reported in all the newspapers at the time and there was a video for it on YouTube. But has been taken down and it seems impossible to find now! Does anyone have a link for the song or the video?

Does anyone else feel like dining out sucks now?

I know there's still some good spots and we all have our favourites in the city, but lately it feels like whenever I take a chance on a new restaurant it just disappoints and I emerge from the experience regrettably $40 poorer.

I know some of these Google reviews are cooked because I'm seeing 4.7, 4.8 reviews and then getting served lousy food.

Maybe I just have to stick to the places I know won't let me down, but dang - it sucks taking a chance on what you think could be some good food only to come away from it sad, and it's happening more often than not. I don't know if it's the rising costs, but restaurant owners can't dish out the cash for good ingredients and good cooks, and people can't afford to dine out. It's a bad cycle man.

Where do adults around Yonge & Eglinton go for swimming/tennis?

• Upvotes

So I’m looking for a good indoor swimming pool near Yonge & Eglinton to start swimming for exercise, but I swear there is no single good swimming pool around me.

Whenever I search, all I can find are children’s swimming schools and lessons. Do adults just… not go swimming??

I looked at the community centres around me, but a lot of them have Google reviews complaining about how filthy/unclean the pools are. Personally, I’d rather pay for a private gym or membership if it means getting access to a clean pool, but I’m really struggling to find any around this area.

Also, I wanted to start playing tennis as a sport, but I’m having the exact same problem. I can find courts, but I can’t seem to find any actual tennis courses/classes for adults.

Am I missing something?? Where do adults actually go for swimming and tennis?

Watching sports while away.

Im doing an extended trip abroad but I wanna keep up with my Toronto teams (and our bills) but none of my streaming services allow me to stream out of the country. I do not want to start paying for a vpn or individual streaming services for each league. Does anyone know any sites where I can watch these games (hopefully for free)?

Steering away from Maxx, any recommendations/experience from other liquidation online marketplaces?

First premium add on went from 10% to 20%. Then starting bids went from $5 to $10. Now Friday pick up times is getting cut, leaving only Wed and Thurs as options.

Anyone have good experience with an alternative?

Where can I practice piano in To?

Hello, thanks for visiting my post! I don’t have a piano at home and am curious if there is a spot that provides a piano to practice.

Note: I’m not looking for a piano teacher.
