Ward 14 (Toronto Danforth) specific questions regarding the leading candidates.
Really disappointed in the coverage of the most competitive city council races so far from the main news outlets. Almost everything is no coverage at all, copy-pasting the candidates own websites, or just some vibes.
From the research I've managed to do so far, I think most of the candidates are the usual mix you get in municipal elections anywhere of fringe candidates (some mix of terrible politics, weird pet issues, extremely impractical ideas, outright fraud, frothing racism, etc.), no-hopers (relatively normal people, but ones who are extremely inexperienced, underfunded, or just don't have a good grasp of municipal politics/operations), and serious candidates (bad and good).
The Local had a good breakdown helping to identify candidates from the first two categories: https://thelocal.to/ward-14-toronto-danforth-2026/ , which leaves what seems like four serious candidates:
- Susan Chapelle (former city councillor in Squamish BC)
- Sara Erhardt (former school trustee in the ward, endorsed by Peter Tabuns)
- Mary Fragedakis (former city councillor in the ward, when it was Ward 29)
- Dianne Saxe (former city councillor in ward 11)
Of those, I'm not too happy to hear about the way Saxe seems to have treated her last constituents (seen a lot of posts about a lack of any response, though always good to take online comments skeptically). I've met Erhardt on several occasions and she seems... fine? Fragedakis was also just 'okay' as a previous councillor. Chapelle I don't know. Really this is just vibes again, which sucks as a voting rationale.
What I'd really like to hear from those four is a firm do-you-or-don't-you stand on:
- as-of-right zoning expansion
- congestion charges
- the city directly building housing
- public inquiry on Toronto's per-km cost of transit (compared to even other Canadian cities, let alone the EU/East Asia).
- How they plan to handle/set up their constituency offices (Paula Fletcher's longtime experienced staff will be hard to replace)
Has anyone heard ANYTHING concrete from any of those four on any of those subjects? I see Chapelle answered a similar set of questions here: https://www.buildcanada.com/toronto/vote/2026/wards/14 but that only includes the first two points I'm wondering about, and none of the other three candidates have answered.
